Wow, that was a very moving story and I'm very sad to hear that your family had to suffer through this (I take it's by the NAZIs) It was very well written.

That was outrageously dark and yet powerfully readable. Very unusual for a tale of torture. Perhaps the reality that you're dealing with, the fact that it is based in something so personal to your family, made it so clear to you that you were able to portray it so vividly, without resorting to the odd ... not sure of the word, but the point is that torture stories are often exercises in trying to imagine the worst things imaginable, and I can often feel the writer reaching, trying to "worsen" each imagined moment. But you don't have to imagine it, and it's no exercise. Which made this story both horrifying and at the same time cathartic to read.

Hoping it was somewhat the same for you to write ... while horrifying, at least somewhat cathartic.

Reading this only deepened my respect for your writing skill. Thanks for sharing.

Well, Scarybearhair directed me to this story. I had not read any of your work before, Lady of Clunn, but I will soon remedy that.

    I'm heavily impressed.

This story rang so true. While not a pleasant read, by any means, the writing is superb, and the agony of Molly and Arthur heart-wrenching. My chest still feels tight and I have to admit this brought me to tears. I'm fascinated by the depths of cruelty man can exhibit towards each other, and I think this a fine exploration of it. I feel so much for your grandfather and his family. Those Holocaust stories should never be forgotten.

I'm almost afraid to wonder what you've envisioned for Harry in a scenario like this. *shivers* The fact that Rowling practically equates the Death Eaters to Nazis in canon always made the dangers for the Order seem much more nasty and evil than her series would ever delve into. She gave us enough touches, I think, to show that there was a serious thread about evil in her story, and not just as a good vs. evil tale. This has always made me see the Harry Potter story as supremely dark.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. It shows others that history is not just words on paper but events that happened to real people and real families.

    Holy hell.

The utterly horrifying, truly disturbing thing about this story is that it's based on actual events. It's visceral and gut-wrenching. There were moments where I gasped aloud, parts where I wanted to cover my eyes or look away, but you took the time to give us this testimony to your grandfather's life, and it seemed that it was the very least I could do to bear witness.

With the material at hand, you used such a finessed touch. A less sophisticated writer could have made these horrible events seem not as real, but you approached it with the respect that these events deserved. I may have nightmares tonight.

Thank you for taking the time and putting yourself through what must have been an emotionally draining process to write this. Stories like this are necessary so people don't become complacent or blind to the horrors that people so willingly inflict on each other.

I think I need to go hug someone now.

    Well done.

This was very chilling, and made even more so by the fact that this is a true story.

The things the characters go through, I don't know if it's only me but it made me feel blessed to grow up in the generation that I did. I imagine the story you've told In this piece must have been chilling to hear for you as well, even more so because the blow has been softened somewhat on us by the fact that we do not know the characters personally, whereas you knew the real people.this piece was exceptionally well written and I found I could not stop reading. You are a strong woman and a rather talented author.

This is a brave thing you did.

I wish I had the right words to say this with. We read and loved a children's war story, and yet underneath it, all this lay, called by association, but easy enough to overlook if you squint right.

It is right to remember that it is there. This is what war is.

Very harrowing. Even more haunting when you read that it is a true story. Well done, especially the ending.

This is just brilliant. I recced it over at The New Library. I just... wow. How horrifying and heart-wrenching, yet I was drawn in and could not stop reading. As sad as this is, I love that you ended it the way you did, with that bit of hope, that knowledge that ALL was not lost. I know what it took for you to write this and I'm proud of you for posting. Excellent telling.

This was very painful and heartwrenching to read. So raw and gritty and just terrible. You really wrote it well, and I'm sure this was really hard to write. I really don't know what else to say...I'm speechless really and my heart is heavy after reading this. Are you going to continue it? I'll understand if you can't but it'd be great if he could find his sister...and there could be some type of retribution to those who did this. Very well written Lady.
