It's an interesting take, I look forward to reading the other posted chapters. I have to admit I would love to see a picture of what Harry looks like with the scars.

this isn't a critique, this is just information, a few things you NEED to know if you are going to be writing about jewelry. First, there is no such thing as 24kt white gold. It only goes up to 18kt because white gold is a combination of 24kt gold and silver to bring the purity back down to 18kt, same thing for rose gold which is a mix of copper and gold. Whereas 24kt yellow gold is the purest form of gold possible (99% pure) with all other metals removed (which unfortunately also makes it extremely soft and able to be damaged). The highest end silver colored metal is platinum and is also far more expensive than 24kt gold. Titanum is also a popular dark metal for mens' jewelry, but as it's the hardest metal to work with and unable to be sized unless it's re forged, one would never make rings out of titanum.

Gems are sized in carats or cts for short, and since it is a custom piece he would have had loose gems brought out in trays and have let her select the ones she wanted in the piece, and if he didn't have any of a particular stone (which is almost unheard of in a jewelry shop unless it's a rare one he normally doesn't use like say a tanzanite or alexandrite) He would tell her when the next shipment of those stones would be due and have her come back to choose the ones she wanted. One would never make a custom piece and let the jeweler decide what to do when it comes to the stones because jewelry is personal, it means something to the person buying it, and for most people the stones are the most important part. Not to mention that what appeals to each person is different. Kinda like you would never drop say, over $200 at a fancy salon going "I have this massively important event tonight and I have to look like a goddess, I want a cut, color, and style by Ramone please." "Ramone is on vacation this week, but Carla is available, what cut and color would you like?" "Oh, whatever, surprise me."

It's the same thing. Trust me on this, the richer they are the pickier they are, they will keep you 2 hours after closing trying to pick the perfect stones for a broach they will probably only wear once maybe twice, and you'll and especially the owner will LET them because you know what, they are spending $45,000 on that broach, and 5%-8% of that is going in your pocket as your paycheck. A full commission sales environment is so completely different than any other retail, and you have to know about it if you're going to write it.

I've worked in fine jewelry for a long time, and metal quality and gem shapes are one of the first things they teach you, so if Harry is a jeweler's apprentice there's no way he wouldn't know about it. He'll also eventually be learning diamond grading, which is an art all its own and can be a headache and a half to write about, especially with readers who most likely won't know anything about it, but it's still a part of basic jewelers lingo. I can help you with most any questions you have, you can email me at emeraldfairy18@ hotmail if you want.

this was a pretty cool chapter, I'm off to read the others now.
