Hmm...

WHY is she giving up now, of all times? HOW did she realize he's "not meant to be mended"? And WHY, in the seven Hells, did he write the letters if all he felt was a slight pang of regret, quickly quashed down?

Interesting premise, but I'm sure you can do better than this. Your dilemma included.
