Hermione's caught in the middle of a very tangled web here - Snape will have to be very sure-footed if he isn't going to put her in danger. Great work!
'Ponce' has moved on from meaning a man who lives on a prostitute's earnings to a more generally abusive term for a man who is perceived to be unmanly, so 'pimp' would have been fine. Having said that, a man of Severus' vintage might well have still used the term in its original sense.
