A Very Good Day
by Teek
It’s not easy, you know, coping with the death of someone
that you considered your only family.
The Dursleys… they really don’t count.
Only by blood are Aunt Petunia and Dudley related to me –not that I
really count Dudley as blood, cause he’s mixed with that oaf of an uncle of
mine-, and Uncle Vernon, well, he can go jump off the Tower of London. Of course, Dumbledore’s real sorry for not
telling me about how to he’s been keeping Voldemort from finding me during the
summer hols sooner, and sorry for not telling me about the prophecy and all
that crap, but it really doesn’t make up for the fact that my godfather’s
dead. Nothing will ever make up for
that. Nothing ever could. Not in a million years.
Currently, I’m sitting in my room, watching the sun set, and
listening again to my aunt and uncle argue.
Despite her dislike for magic, Aunt Petunia has defended me to Uncle
Vernon, and has been more then civil to me.
Actually, she’s been… almost nice, really. I think Dumbledore really scared her with the ‘remember my last’
bit. She knows I’m the last of her
family line. The last of the real line,
anyway. I think they’re currently
arguing over the fact that I’m always dressed in black. That I’ve got both my ears pierced, and my tongue, and both nipples. Or possibly the black nail varnish, and the
make-up I’ve been wearing. I don’t think they know about the tatoo yet. "> ‘Xcuse me, tatoos. Remus and Tonk had arranged for me to go into London, and Diagon
Alley, and I did whatever I wanted, with the six hours we were out. Tonk thought it all quite… fitting, while
Remus… it was rebellious, and appropriate, given who I am, and what everyone
thinks I am. I can’t wait to see
everyone’s reactions on the first.
‘Specially Malfoy. Ever since
his father got landed in Azkaban, he’s been a total bastard, not that that’s
unusual.
“Potter! Get down
h”
The stupid wanker doesn’t understand, but that’s okay. I don’pectpect him to. Being hotter then hell today, I’m only
wearing my tight black jeans, and the black and red plastic bangles I normally
wear, on both wrists. My wand is in the
special holster I had made for it, and I have to smirk. Dudley was so scared when I came home that
day, cause all he saw of me was black, and then a silver studded belt-like
thing with my wand on it. He still
hasn’t grasped that it’s a holster much like the one’s the old American cowboys
wore. The look on my whale of an
uncle’s face is so hillarious, tho’, him being so wide-eyed and now pale. Ah, so now he’s seen it all.
“So, what did you want?” I ask, walking down the stairs, and
pushing my sleek, new oval black wire frames back up, knowing that my eyes had
flashed a bit. It was a neat trick Tonk
taught me.
“What have you done to yourself?!” demands my purpling
Uncle.
“What I want. Was
there something specific you needed, Uncle Vernon, or can I return to my
brooding?”
”Where did you get that tatoo!? And how
dare you get yourself pierced! I’ll not
have that kind of of fre-“
“You don’t really get a say in anything that I do,
Dursley. Not at all. I really have never considered you my
family. Never will either. My only family –legally anyway- is
dead. Died last year, for me. Went through an archway that leads to only Merlin
knows where. You can hear the voices
behind it, but you sure as hell can’t step through it to get to them. You’d join them if you tried. But do you wanna know what’s the true
kicker? I see the grim every
night. He sleeps with me sometimes. Big, hairy black thing, with glowing white
eyes. He’s been watching the house
–watching me- for just about a year now, and believe me, he’s not all that hapy
with you. Not happy with the way I’ve
gone into this whole dark, angsty, punky stuff, but he understands it. Funny how life works out. He dies, and the grim comes to keep me
company. To tell me how he is. To deliver messages from Cedric, and from
mum and dad.
“Oh, and Aunt Petunia, mum says to go see grandma, and talk
about me. She’s got something to give
me, and needs you to deliver it.
Probably something Blood Magic related, but then again, I’m not
sure. I’ve already gotten mum’s gift,
and dad’s, and now Siri’s, so who knows what grandma can give me. She wasn’t a witch, but I’m not sure what spirits
pick up in the other worlds.”
I’m quite sure they understand as I move to brush the hair
out of my face. The platinum ring on my
right pinky, and the white gold on my left ring, glowed white, while the
serpent on my right thumb, and the lion on my left middle, were green and red,
respectively. The fact that they
actually see my scar clearly now, that’s not important. Not as important as the shadowy black beast
that walked out of the cold fire place.
I kneel next to him, smiling, and hug him, quite aware that they can see
through him, and see my arms straight through him. A snort from outside the window makes me look up, and I see the
familiar form of a thestral standing out in the gardens. Of course, there was the little fact that
Luna Lovegood was standing next to it, smiling in at me. I waved, and with a flick of my wrist, a
shirt flies down to me. I cover my back
–and the skull with wings tatooed onto my back- and walk out, the grim trotting
next to me. I hear my aunt gasp as she
finally catches a glimpse of the girl, and the great black beast next to
her. You see, Luna and I, we’ve both
seen death. We’ve both learned to
accept it. We’ve both got our scars,
and our demons. And my aunt? Well, she would know all about seeing
death. I’ve already died once, but no
one, not even Dumbledore, knows that. I
was three. Heart stopped beating for a
minute and a half, until she remembered who I was. What I was.
I’m her nephew. Her
sister’s only son, and thus, the last bit of Lily Evans to hold onto. Aunt Petunia regrets it all now, of course,
but she’ll never tell anyone that. She
doesn’t think I know. Doesn’t think I
hear her when she asks mum’s forgiveness.
And she doesn’t know that I see mum with her every time. That I hear her cry with her, and tell her
that she’s forgiven. That she
understands. And mum does. "> She always has, but was too afraid to tell
her sister that. Just like I was too
afraid that last Christmas I spent with Sirius to tell him that I loved
him. More than anything. More than I think I’d ever loved anyone.
But now he knows, and I have my blessings, and have my
grim. My grim. I always smile when I think of him like
that. He made me see Luna for who and
what she is. Great witch, that
one. Dark as hell when she wants to be,
but always my light now. Ron still
doesn’t understand how I can like her, in a more-than-friends-way. ‘Mione gets it, I think, and I know Neville
understands. Nev and I have grown a lot
closer, since I discovered that he was born the same day I was. Funny how in the four years prior to the
whole ‘prophecy’ thing, I didn’t know when his actual birthday was. We still practice the Dark Arts together,
and he’s getting quite good. Almost as
good as ‘Mione with his wand work, and getting much better with his
potions. He goes with Luna and I
sometimes, when we skip out of Hogwarts and head to the Hogs’ Head. It’s really quite nice, having someone else
to talk with about death and all that good stuff.

“Where to, luv?” I ask, putting an arm around my girlfriends
waist, on hand still ruffling my grim’s fur to console him.
“Knocturn? I got a
load of books I want to get, and they’re only available there.”
”Sounds like a good idea to me. I wanna
stop in to Borgin and Burkes anyway.”
“Oooh, looking for more stuff from the Malfoy’s?”
”As always. Gotta find something to use
against the mighty Dragon, you know.
Can’t have him getting the upper hand.”
”Of course we couldn’t. Shouldn’t you
tell your relatives where you’re going?”
”Hm. Pro’ly right.” I turn to the door, where Uncle Vernon is
fuming. “I’m going to London, be back tomorrow, maybe the day after. We’re meeting Remus and Tonk there.”
And I don’t wait for an answer, just hop onto the thestral’s
back, and help Luna up. My grim barks
happily and disappears in a swirl of black, and I know he’ll be meeting us
there. Aunt Petunia is running forward,
and holds her hands up in surrender as the thestral snorts at her. Uncle Vernon, I see, is quite unsettled by
the small spray of blood that’s appeared on her apron from the snort.
“Be careful, Potter.” she tells me, and her eyes say she’s
sincere.
“Always am. Would
you… feed Hedwig when she gets back for me?
She knows I’m going away, but she’ll be hungry.”
”I will, but mind you, it’s not to become a habit. I shouldn’t let you out without your escorts, you know that.”
”And you’re a wonderful aunt for allowing it.
Thank you, Aunt Petunia.”
She just nods, and with a wave of our hands, Luna and I cast
a simple notice-me-not charm, and then a concealment. The thestrals’ quick turn about and run down the road has my aunt
running out to the front, shouting after me.
“You take care of your lady friend, or there’ll be hell to
pay, boy!”
“Yes Aunt Petunia.”
And with a giggle, Luna tightens her hold around me, and I
smile. My aunt’s not so bad. Not really.
Dumbledore should’ve talked to her a long time ago. Now, if only we could get Uncle Vernon and
Dudley to understand. I sigh. Wishful thinking. I’ll have to be content with just my aunt. And you know, it’s good enough.
“Harry?”
”Hm?”
”You and your aunt, you’re really starting to get along much bettew.”
She’s quiet for a minute, and then scoots closer to me, chin
on my shoulder.
“You really think Tonk and Lupin will let us do it?”
”Tonk, no problem, Remy… maybe a little, but it’s getting nearer to a full
moon, so he might be game. We’ll have
to ask.”
The rest of our flight is in silence, and we land just
outside the Leaky Cauldron, our concealment and notice-me-not
disappearing. The thestral gives us
each a final nudge before walking down the street, kicking an apple cart over
as he passed –which Luna and I find highly amusing, considering that he doesn’t
eat them as fresh as they are at the stand- and we walk inside. Ton>Tonk and Remus are by our sides in
seconds.
“Do you two have any idea how dangerous it is to leave a thestral
in the middle of Muggle London?!” our werewolf guard reprimands.
“Yeah, but you can’t say it’s not fun.” giggles Luna.
“Besides, Lupin, whooingoing to know it came with them?”
Tonk smirks, “Thestrals don’t normally listen to people, and the only tamed
herd known is at Hogwarts…”
“Very true. I take
it you want to go shopping?”
“Giving in socklyckly, Remus, I’m surprised!” I exclaim,
“but no, actually, we wanted to go down the Alley, and pick up a few
things… And then we wanted to see if
there was a dead zone near by.”
”A what?” Tonk asked, surprised, I suppose, to find that we know about dead
zones, and guessing from her dark look, that we know what they can be used for.
“No. The Alley we
can do, but there is no way I’m letting you find and use a dead zone,
Harry. I can’t. And I want to do it too, but you know you’re
putting yourselves at risk by doing it.”
I hold his gaze, and smile, knowing that he’s giving us the
okay.
“Okay. We
understand. No talking to Siri. Can we head into the Alley now?” Luna asks.
“Be sure to be back here by five, and make sure you leave
your mirrors open.” he says.
“Always. Thanks
Remy, you’re the greatest!”
I hug him and kiss his cheek, and take my girlfriends hand,
leadinr inr into the back, where we’ll cross the barrier into Diagon
Alley. My grim follows happily, and I
feel Sirius’ arm around me as we walk through.
It’s fun, watching all the people get out of the way as we walk. Not used to seeing a grim with two young
people, obviously. I think I like
this. Wonder what Dumbledore will say
at the start of term, when we get back to school. I smirk, and notice the matching on on Luna’s face as she runs a
hand through her hair.
“Have I told you lately that I love your hair like
that? And that I love the black
contacts? They fit you very well.”
”They’re done with an anti-glamour too, and an unconcealable, and a see-all. Daddy thought it best that I have everything
I could possibly need, given that I’m with the Boy-Who-Lived and all. I told him I wanted it just because it would
be beneficial to my practices, but you know how he is. Just like everyone else. Doesn’t see outside the box.”
”No, they normally don’t. Hey, luv, is
that Malfoy and his mum?”
”Wha? Oh, over by Quality Quidditch,
yeah. Why, wanna scare ‘em?”
”You’ve read my mind.”
“Hello Draco. Mrs.
Malfoy. Enjoying your day?” Luna asks,
leaning into me.
“We were, until you showed up. What were your names again?”
Luna and I look at each other and laugh. With my scar covered, and her new look
–well, both of us had a new look, really- he doesn’t have a clue. So stupid.
“Honestly, Malfoy, you can’t even recognize your own
mother’s cousin’s godson? Shame on
you. I thought you and I were close,
what with all the fighting and such.
But I guess my change makes you forget me.
