Title: Dogs’ Night
Disclaimer: I
obviously don’t own them. J.K. Rowling
does, and she’d probably wet herself if she read this. ^_^; Heh…
Note: Just so you
know, this takes place when The Marauders are in their seventh year at
Hogwarts, so everyone is 18 now.

“So…I guess I’m…going it alone tonight then?”
James and Peter stared at each other, then at Remus. The boy wookiooking sick and pale as he
studied his moon chart to avoid his friends’ gazes. He didn’t want their sympathy, he always got
that during the full moon, but he didn’t like the feeling that he was suddenly
alone. They’d all done so much, worked
so hard, just so he wouldn’t have to be lonely, and he’d gotten so used to
having them there. But tonight…
“You know we always wanna be there for you, Moony, but I
haven’t been sleeping good, and the big match is tomorrow,” James explained,
and Remus felt like he might cry.
“And I’ve got that huge Defense Against the Dark Arts test
to make up tomorrow,” Peter squeaked quietly.
Remus swallowed hard.
“I know. I know. And Sirius has detention, so he’ll have to
finish his homework when he gets out. Don’t
worry, guys. I’ll be fine.” He forced himself to look up and smile. an>“an>“It’s just one full moon. I went through plenty of them alone before I
met Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. It’s
not that bad, really. Honest.”
They both looked unconvinced, but neither said anything else
as Remus got ready to go.
---
Sitting alone in the Shrieking Shack, Remus waited for the
moon to rise and filter in through the filthy windows. It felt strange, being by himself there, and
the thought of transforming with nothing, no one, nowhere to turn to was
frightening him already. He listened to
the noises of the old house, tears in his eyes, imagining he was locked in with
the werewolf instead of locked inside it.
What would it be like, knowing there was a beast somewhere nearby, too
se, se, and it could scent your every move?
How, even as beasts of their own, could his friends brave such a
frightening and dangerous situation?
So he sat there, waiting for the sun to die away from the
window sill, and cried into his knees as an old clock ticked off the seconds
down stairs somewhere. Then something
moved on the steps, the creaking roaring through the silence. Heart racing, Remus stared at the door. What if it was someone trying to be brave for
their friends, breaking in to the haunted house? The sun was almost down. His bones were aching already. Should he warn them? Or should he just hide and hope they left in
time?
“Moony?” A voice
called from the hall, and Remus jumped.
“Hey, Moony? You there?”
“S-sirius?”
The rugged face of his best friend grinned in at him, shaggy
black hair falling across his eyes.
“There you are! The others said
you were goin’ out alone tonight, so I figured Moony and Padfoot could have a
dogs’ night, ya know?” All smiles, the
boy sat down beside the confused werewolf.
“B-but…don’t you have homework?”
Sirius smirked.
“Potions can wait. Friends
can’t.” He shrugged. “Besides, I hat to think what it’d be like
here alone.”
Blushing slight, Remus smiled. “Thanks, Padfoot.”
“Don’t mention it!”
his friend laughed. “If you’ve
seen Prongs catch the snitch once, you’ve seen it a million times. James won’t mind if I finish my homework
instead.”
---
Padfoot crouched down behind a half open door, trying to
stifle the panting that had resulted form bounding down the corridors of the
Shrieking Shack. He could hear the
creaking of Moony wandering elsewhere in search of him. The werewolf probably knew what part of the
house he was in already anyway. No point
in giving it away.
So he sat in waiting, ready to run again.
