Author's Notes: Well wahoo, Julianne finally coaxed me into writing something with Snape in it. THIS IS MY FIRST SNAPE FIC!!! *stands up, and does a victory dance*. Well I hope you all like, I'm not really very good at writing Snape, so please don't hurt me. Well I do hope you all enjoy.
Snape watched as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Kiara Edwynneson, helped a Ravenclaw first year. The student looked very nervous about asking her for help, but she smiled and offered her help. The student smiled back and went off to join her friends. He was throughly disgusted with her bright amber-gold eyes bright with love and understanding, her curly carmel-brown hair bouncing to-and-fro as she walked down the hall. She's to damn happy, Snape thought, just to damn happy.
The other professors seeming loved her. Minerva kept commenting on how she good she was with the first years. Well, certainly most of them were scared out of their minds coming to Hogwarts. It was a big place and you could get lost easily. Snape knew the feeling. He too, had attended Hogwarts when he was young. And he'd heard boys, gossiping like girls, about how beautiful she was. It was getting sickening.
-------------
"Attention! Attention, students! Do to the great success last year of the Yule Ball, there shall be another held this year over Christmas holiday. All students fourth year and up are encouraged to attend. The four house Seekers will be opening the Ball, and I have booked Kayli Moedeem for the musical entertainment." Dumbledore announced one morning.
The Hall broke out in conversation on the Ball. Snape groaned. He hated these things, he'd rather stay down in his dungeons than attend it. But somehow Dumbledore and McGonagall dragged him from his gloomly rooms. Kiara, on the other hand looked delighted. She and Professor Flickwick were engaged in a conversation on how the Hall was to be decorated.
-------------
Snow had fallen over Hogwarts, making it a picturesic scene. It seemed as though all students fourth year and up were signed up to stay at home. Girls were traveling in packs again and boys were getting fustrated on who to ask to he Ball. Harry, of course, asked Cho Chang right away, and was now walking around the corridors with a triumphant grin plastered on his face. Cho had said yes. And Dean was going with Pavarti, Lavender with Seamus, and not to anyone's surprise, Ron was going with Hermione. Many of the boys had asked Professor Edwynneson, but she told them they couldn't go with a teacher, and they all walked away with hurt faces.

Finally, the day of the Yule Ball came. Everyone was dressed in their finest. As predicted, Kiara saw Minerva and Albus ushering Severus into the Great Hall. All she could was laugh. Seeing Severus being practically dragged into the Great Hall was the funniest thing she'd ever seen.
"Kiara," Albus asked. "is this seat taken?"
"No." Kiara giggled as they plopped him down in the chair next to her.
"What are you giggling about?" Severus asked coldly.
"And a Happy Christmas to you, too." she laughed.
"Bah humbug." Severus muttered.
"SCROOGE!!" Kiara shouted. Severus looked at her, stunned. People began to stare at them.
"What?" Severus asked.
"Scrooge, Ebenezer Scrooge. Don't you read Charles Dickens?" Kiara snapped.
"No." Severus murmured.
"Well it's about this man, who thinks Christmas is such a horrible holiday. And he's—" Severus cut her off.
"Visited by three ghosts: Past, Present, and Future. They show him what Christmases of the past and present, and the future holds death for him and the Cracket boy. But no one remembers him, they celebrate his death. Waking from what seems like a dream, he buys the biggest turkey in the meat shop and sends it to the Crackets, bringing presents and a raise for Bob." Severus explained.
Kiara smiled. "So you have read Charles Dickens."
"Yes, well, he isn't that bad." Severus replied coldly.
"Severus, when was the last time you smiled?" Kiara asked.
It was an innocent question, yes. But it caught Severus off his guard. He really had to think about it. Of course he smirked once and a great while, but when was the last time he actually smiled. When he was about six years old. His father had given him his first owl. He remembered himself smiling very broadly.
"When I was six years old." he replied. Kiara nearly feel out of her chair.
"When you were six years old?" Kiara stared at him.
"Yes."
"You don't get out much, do you?"
"I like being alone. I like the peace and quiet."
"Professor Edwynneson?" it was Draco Malfoy. He looked rather handsome in his robes of navy-blue.
"Yes, Draco."
"Would you care to dance?"
"Yes, I'd love to." she smiled and got up from her seat at the Staff table.
Severus watched as Kiara got up from her seat and walk out onto the dance floor with Draco. He watched them twirl and spin. He saw Draco lean down and whisper something into her ear. He obviously said something wrong, because she immediately let go of his shoulder and hand, took twenty-five points from Slytherin, and stalked back to her seat next to him.
"That little Malfoy. He's a little pervert he is." she fumed.
"He's part veela." Severus explained. "It's his nature to be perverted."
"Well," she was at a loss for words. "hmph."
Severus watched Kiara pout for about five minutes until he burst out. "Oh, quit pouting, I get enough of that from the students here."
Kiara stared. "You know, you're right. I'm supposed to being having a great time. Severus, would you like to dance?"
Severus stared at her. "Er—"
"Oh come on, you really shouldn't be sitting here like a great black lump. Come dance with me." Kiara smiled, extending a delicate, slender hand toward Severus.
"Oh well, I can't dance very well." Severus lied.
"Then follow me." Kiara said.
"Well," Severus looked back her. Light was showing just behind her, it gave her an angelic glow. "alright."
Kiara smiled broadly as she practically dragged Severus onto the dance floor. He stood in front of her not really knowing where to put his hands. She smiled kindly and placed one of his hands on her hip while she grabbed the other with her hand. They began to waltz to the slow tune playing. Kiara stared up into Severus' dark eyes. She saw the nervous flush creep across his cheeks. She smiled at him, and for the first time in his adult life, Severus smiled back.
