The Coven
Chapter 1: The Idea
Hermione Granger was on a mission. The seventh year, Hogwarts Head Girl was sick of waiting. She was sick and tired of waiting for the DeathEaters to attack her beloved school. Why did the side of light have to only be defensive? They just sat on the fence. Hell, they just sat on their asses and WAITED for evil to come to them. At least, that is how it felt to her. Oh sure, she wasnt a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Sure, she wasnt privy to the operations underway. She was merely a student. It didnt seem to matter that her life had been in danger a half a dozen times in the past seven years fighting Voldemort and his followers. It didnt matter that her best friend would most likely die saving the wizarding (and muggle) world from this evil.
The waiting was unbearable. She felt like screaming! So Hermione did the one thing she could do to help the cause. She did what she did best. She did the one thing that she could do better than ANYONE in the entire school. Hermione Granger went to the school library.
***************
After spending all of Saturday afternoon in the library, Hermiones frustration had not eased. She just could not find the right text to solve her problem. How could books let her down? It was not possible. She must not be working hard enough. She must have missed something.
She pushed her quill through her bushy, brown hair, closed her eyes and let the comfort of the library surround her. Breathing deeply, she let the calm tranquility of the library envelop her. It was silent today. No other students spent their Saturdays there. At least not at the beginning of the school year. Not when the weather was still pleasant outside. They would all be stuck inside soon enough.
The smell of the books; old leather, parchment and ink filled her head. The knowledge she knew was within them calmed her soul. Okay Hermione, you can do this, you can find the right book. You know it is out there, Hermione thought to herself.
Browsing through the history section again, Hermione stopped at the end of the aisle. At the very top corner shelf sat a book she had never seen before that moment. Pulling a ladder to the corner, she climbed up and pulled out the previously unnoticed text.
A History of Medieval Covens by Cassiopeia Wedgethistle.
Hermiones heart started to beat rapidly. This is it! I just know it!, exclaimed Hermione. Madam Pince shushed her.
She ran (or walked as quickly as she could) to Madam Pinces desk, checked out the book and returned to the Head Girl dorm room.
Her room was as quiet as the library. As Head Girl, she had a private entrance next to the portrait of the Fat Lady in the pink dress. The door wasnt there last year, but like all things at Hogwarts, change is expected. Doors come and go, stairs have invisible holes in them, and Peeves could be around any corner with an ink well in his hand.
Hermione sat on her bed with Crookshanks curled up next to her and let the book pour into her mind. At ten oclock in the evening, Hermione had finished the book. She lay on her bed, a tremendous smile on her face. The smile said it all. She now had a place to start. An inkling of a plan.
Her stomach began to rumble. Goodness, I missed lunch AND dinner. That is what research is all about... forgetting everything else around you. Time, friends, food, personal hygiene. Maybe that is why Snape looks like that... research. She took a moment to ponder her snarky professor.
Her stomach growled again snapping her out of her reverie. Off to the kitchens, to bed and then corner Professor McGonagall first thing in the morning. She literally skipped down the corridors to the kitchen. She was excited, but a little nervous. Too many thoughts buzzed around her head. She knew that her plan had to work. It just had to...
