Author's Note: Kali belongs to me, and contrary to popular belief, I own Harry Potter, he's my slave. Seriously, I do. They're quite fun really, Harry especially. I keep him miniturized in a little jar on my desk. Whenever I need him for things, I just pull out my wand and make him grow- er, wait, that sounds wrong. What I mean it I blow him him, uh, no that sounds strange too. Well, see there's a big Harry and a mini Harry, dang it! This won't ever come out right. So I'll just get to the point: No moose were harmed in the writing of this story.
Please review whether you like the story or not. Flames will be used to dry my laundry with, and to burn the rough drafts of this story. And to warm my bum by.
This Chapter: The prolouge may seem kind of vague, but I didn't want to jump right into the middle of the story without knowing about Dumbledore leaving, etc. So this is an informant filler chapter until I can get to the meaty part of the story.
Prolouge.
Harry sighed as he entered the familiar halls of the castle. The air was empty and stale, though the voices of the now absent students filled his ears so loudly that they rang. As he walked down a long corridor, his footsteps echoing against the stone walls, he knew the Hogwarts Express would be arriving at Hogsmeade shortly, and the silence of the school would be shatter for yet another year. After turning down a hallway just off the once Forbidden Third Floor corridor, Harry saw a tall mahongany door with a brass plaque on it.
"Harry Potter, Dean of Student Relations" it read.
Harry grinned and muttered his unlocking charm. The door swung open freely, and he stepped inside his new home. A small sitting room line with bookcases greeted him, a fireplace against the wall to his right. To his left was a counter with three barstools resing beneath it. A small kitchen lay behind the counter. Directly in front of him was a white, slightly adjar. Harry strode forward and nudged the door with his toe. A large bed with maplsts sts stood in the middle of the room, flanked by matching nightstands on either side. A matching dresser stood on the right wall, and an ample-sized closet was fitted into the left side. Harry smiled as he set his suitcase on the floor and walked around. A soft knock on the outer door made him turn.
"I'm glad to see you've found your way back around the castle, Harry," Albus Dumbledore said softly, his midnight blue robes billowing out behind him as he glided through the door.
"You know me Professor. After 7 years here, how could I not have every corridor, dungeon, and secret passageway burned onto my memory," Harry smiled as his mentor. In the years he had been away, Harry could see that a noticable change had come over Dumbledore. The wisedom that used to dominate over his aged features had faded, making the wizard appear somewhat slumped and very tired.
"Come now Harry, you needen't call me "Professor" or "Headmaster" anymore, Albus will be fine. After all, we are both wizards of the same standing. However, I can't thank you enough for helping us out, Harry. I regret that I won't be here to see you in action, but I know Headmaster Gregory will appreciate your knowledge of the workings of Hogwarts, and your assistance with the student," Dumbledore took Harry's hand in his and patted it in a grandfatherly fashion.
"The school won't be the same without you," Harry put an arm around the stooped older man as they walked out of Harry's apartment towards the Great Hall. "But you've done more than your share to help Hogwarts, and the wizarding world for that matter. It is only fitting that you be able to spend the remained of your years relaxing," he continued.
"Yes, well, I am rather looking forward to catching up on my reading. After countless birthdays, Christmases, and other holidays, I have a collection of reading that would rival the Library of London," Dumbledore chuckled. "And now, after the war, a flood of new books have hit the wizarding book lists, and I suppose I'll read those as well. I know I always complained about people giving me books, but they do rather pass the time well."
Harry and Dumbledore came to a stop at the entrance to the Great Hall.
"Will you be staying for the Sorting Ceremony?," Harry asked, seeing the other professors making last minute preparations to the decorations.
"No, I'm afraid I'll be taking the Hogwarts Express back into the village. Besides, one can only hear the Sorting Song so many times. And imagine all the years I had with it sitting in my office writing a different song every year. Constantly asking, "What word rhymes with Quidditch" and other such nonsense," Dumbledore and Harry laughed.
"I'm trusting you with my school, Harry. It may sound boastful, but Hogwarts is the way it is now because of me. I faced much scritiny from the Governors and many others for ideas that were thought to be radical when I imposed them on the school. But the wizarding would has changed, and we must change with it. Though I am leaving, I will always be here. My heart and soul will remain in this school, as a pupil, as a professor, as Headmaster, and most importantly as a role model for the way the wizarding world can be. As long as there are those who remember me, I will be with Hogwarts," Dumbledore stated, looking wistfully about the halls. A train whistled in the distance, bringing both men back to the present.
"The best of luck to you Harry. My word of advice to you in regards to the students: do not forget the many escapades that you, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger had planned. I know from your stories that many of them went unnoticed, many were close calls, and yet there were still quite a few times you would be found sitting in my office ending a story with, "and that, Headmaster is why we were out of bed at night" and so forth. If memory serves me correctly, I believe that among the three of you, every school rule was broken," Dumbledore recalled with a twinkle in his eye.
"Not true Professor. There is one rule about riding brooms in the castle, we didn't break that one," Harry reminded him.
"Ah, you are right. The incident I have in mind was of an impromptu game of Quidditch that broke out in the Great Hall. But I recall Fred and George Weasley, Oliver Wood, Dean Thomas, and Seamus Finnigan serving detention for that. Mr. Longbottom would have served one as well, had the end of his broom not caught the end of the table, throwing him against the wall. By the time he came back around the detentions had been served, and Madame Pomfrey felt he suffered enough," Dumbledore's laugh bounced off the trophies in the Trophy Room.
"Yes, we did have some good times," Harry agreed, a faroff look creeping over his features.
"Well, be that as it may, keep those times in mind when you start having problems with students," Dumbledore advised. He pulled Harry in a hug, Harry nearly having to bend at the waist to tower over the old man.
"Enjoy your retirement, Professor," Harry called as Dumbledore walked out of the castle. He turned before he closed the door behind him.
"I'm always an owl away, Harry. And who knows, maybe one day I'll get one of those Muggle e-mail accounts that you always use." Dumbledore glanced quickly around the halls one last time before closing the heavy door behind him.
Harry laughed inwardly at the thought of seeing Dumbledore hunched over a keyboard, looking at a computer screen. As the door to the castle clicked shut and the echos died down around him, Harry was filled with a sense that some part of him had died. A part of him had though that Dumbledore would be the Headmaster of Hogwarts long after Harry's children and grandchildren had graduated, and that Dumbledore outlive all the teachers and most of the students. Yet the rational part of his brain won over, telling him that he knew this day would come, and now that it had, there was no place to go but forward.
