One side of the coin
Sleep is indeed a wonderful thing. It relaxes not only your body and mind, as a nice plus it provides you with images, otherwise known as dreams, from your subconscious. If you are lucky.
Normally Professor Severus Snape thought himself to be an exception. Dreams of Death Eaters, even spy-turned ex-Death Eaters don't tend to be very amusing.
But this one was different.
He was somewhere cosy and dark. He knew that it wasn't completely secure, something was nagging at the back of his brain. But who wants to be on guard when there are other things to concentrate on?
An aroused body near his own. Hands stroking up his sensitive inner arms, ...
Dark grey stonewalls and a cold floor. Such rooms normally belong to other scenarios full of blood, pain and sick pleasure. The tickle on his skin. Not due to hands but magic. Wards.
His own?
...over his shoulders. Painting ornaments over his shoulderblades. Eyes,...
And whispers on the other side of the door.
Ignore them, concentrate on-
...glittering eyes, staring into his...
- a little bit unfocused eyes. Unfocused and full of-
tears?
Suddenly coldness. The surroundings changes to blurry underwater scenery, every movement feels as though it was held back by water. The part of his brain observing the on goings, knowing it was a dream, snorted. 'For once a nice dream for me.
Yeah, not bloody likely.'
The one thing that would make it worse would be-
Screaming.
Ear shattering screaming.
Panting and stroking his sweaty hear out of his eyes, Severus Snape was sitting up in his bed. A little groggy he reached for his wand, which was lying on his bedside table. The damp sheets were clinging to his skin. Cold sweat wasn't the most comfortable thing.
Damn dream.
Ahem. Shouldn't the screaming have stopped after waking up?
Now fully awake Snape snatched his morning robe, knotted the belt loosely and went to see what was causing this ruckus, wand in hand. Of course every Slytherin knew that he or she could come to him for help around the clock. But it really was against sane Slytherin behaviour to do it so loudly and for every passing nitwit to witness. By the way, the high-pitched scream didn't sound like an ordinary teenager in distress. It sounded more like bloody murder.
If this was a prank, he hoped that the culprit (most likely one of these annoying Gryffindors) fled already, because otherwise he would have to face a very pissed off Potions Master.
"What-"
The noise stopped and started anew with double force. And the source lay to his feet in a small bundle. The stunned man gulped and stared down at the unmistakeable form of a baby. And ay diy distressed baby to boot. Little fists waved hysterically in the air and the most prominent feature in the little red face was a wide-open mouth. All in all it resembled a swollen peeled tomato.
Who would leave such a helpless creature at the door of the traditional venomous head of Slytherin? And where had this little nuisance come from anyway?
During his ponderings and statuesque like posture the baby never stopped screaming.
"Do something against this infernal noise!" A third party had joined the scene.
Filch, with his cat on his arm had appeared. He seemed to be nonplussed by the sight that greeted his eyes.
As if a baby in the dungeons was normal.
And as if Snape was responsible.
" I cannot sleep with all this noise." Filch scratched Mrs. Norris behind her ears and scowled at the other man accusingly.
Snape sneered back. "You don't sleep anyway at night."
The baby cried on.
"Whatever. Stop it!"
"Why me?"
"Your doorstep, your responsibility."
"And what should I do, pray tell?"
"Take it."
"What? Never mind." He bend down, took the surprisingly soft bundle up, carefully avoiding too much body-contact and supporting the neck. Hadn't he heard somewhere that that is the thing to do with newborns? Not that he was sure this was a newborn. And the little mouth closed, swollen eyes opened and blinked up as if to ask: what took you so long? Black eyes meet black eyes. The younger pair accusingly, the older clueless.
His arms started to hurt. As light as the baby was, with stretched arms it got strenuous to hold it. Now the small thing was whimpering.
He nodded absentmindedly as Filch bade him good-bye and started to inspect the foundling. Now that his skin was getting back its original colour it didn't resemble a tomato anymore but Snape wondered how people could always speak about sweet little beauties. The pink blanket suggested that it was female. A shock of jet-black hair grew on the top of her (?) head. Otherwise he didn't see a difference to other little children.
Black hair, black eyes.
No. Whoever thought to get him stuck this little product of a big mistake.
Severus Snape had no liking for females. Hence no babies possible.
Suddenly he became aware of his surroundings. He was still standing like stoned on his doors, ho, holding a whimpering something far away from his body like it carried the plague.
"Hmpf" he turned around and smashed the door in its frame.
After that he laid his unwelcome visitor down on his couch he stated to inspect it. An envelope was sticking out in between the folds.
Aha, second part of the tragedy. Was he still dreaming and caught bad bad muggle movie? ' I cannot care for our littler one any more, now it is your turn... blabla.'
If he got hold of the highly irresponsible female who dared to play this trick on him- he wasn't a very loving person, everyone, including himself knew this. Money, blackmail. What other reasons can there be for such a stunt?... Thoughts were chasing each other in his head while he opened the envelope.
"Severus,
Take care of her, she is your daughter as unlikely as this sounds. It doesn't matter if you believe me or not (the first one, I bet). Make a parental test if you like. It is too dangerous for me to keep her. I would love to, but I will not endanger her life. Her birthday is the 5th May. I named her Lierin.
Good luck to both of you and be careful."
Snape snorted and crumpled the sheet between his long fingers.
Ridiculous.
The man grumbled some well-chosen angry words, completely inappropriate for young ears. And the young one in question started screaming again
"Arrggggg!!!"
Ten minutes later Poppy Pomfrey got a shock. Severus Snape in the hospital wing in the middle of the night wasn't something new.
Now he needed help again, that was obvious. And the little infant he shoved hastily in her arms matched the distress of the professor.
Listening with one ear to Snape's explanation she cuddled the little girl and checked her body systems. Apart from needing a new diaper everything was Ok.
A crumpled letter, which said that Severus should have fathered this little sweety, was showed to her. What a hoax, but on the other hand-
this baby could be indeed mistaken for an offspring of the Snape lineage. Her looks, thank goodness the nose of the girl doesn't resemble Snape's, were a dead giveaway. And her temper clearly reminded Poppy of the temperamental Potions Master. She didn't get the time for more questions. After he tohe she story, the professor bade her a good night, turned around and went back to his own chambers, robes billowing behind him a was was his trademark.
