“Pull the shades
Razor blades
You're so tragic
I hate you so but love you more
I'm so elastic
The things you say
Games you play
Dirty magic”
Harry knew something was wrong. He couldn’t pinpoint what, but ‘something’ was wrong. Here he was, with Ginny Weasley, love of his life, and the mere thought of touching her rendered him stone cold.
Ginny had blossomed into a beautiful girl-woman over the last year, and Harry had fallen for her, hard. Ginny had been taken with Harry since she first met him, at the beginning of her first year at Hogwarts, and though she’d had other boyfriends, she’d always carried a flame for Harry.
So why was Harry laying next to her, feeling nothing as she ran her beautiful hand along his bare chest?
Why was he feeling nothing as he caressed her thigh, slowly dragging her school kilt up?
Why was he just going through the motions?
Ginny climbed on top of Harry, and leaned in to kiss him. As she made contact with his lips, he jerked his head away, leaving Ginny looking confused, and, he thought, a little hurt.
“Harry, what - what’s wrong?” she whispered
“I don’t know, Ginny. I just…” he trailed off, unsure how to say it without hurting her feelings. “I just don’t feel like it.”
Ginny sat back, pulling her school shirt around herself. “Why, Harry?”
“I don’t know.” He realised how feeble he sounded, and added, “I’m sorry.
Ginny climbed off him and buttoned up her shirt.
They lay together on Harry’s bed in the dorm for a while, silently, Harry stroking Ginny’s violently red hair, listening to her breathe, watching her chest rise and fall.
In spite of his best efforts not to, Harry fell asleep. When Ginny became aware of Harry’s unmistakeable light, tremulous snoring, she crept out of his bed and out of the Gryffindor 7th year common room.

“What do you think is wrong with him?”
Ginny was talking to Hermione the next day at breakfast. She’d explained to her brother’s girlfriend what had happened, hoping for Hermione’s insight.
“I don’t know, Ginny. Maybe he’s worried about the exams.”
Ginny snorted. “Harry? Worry about exams?”
Hermione smiled. “Fair point there. Hmm….” she trailed off. Hermione thought she might know what was getting Harry down, but she also knew that if she was right, it was up to Harry, not herself, to tell Ginny.
At the other end of the table, Harry was sitting with Ron Weasley, Ginny’s older brother and Harry’s best friend. He really wanted Ron’s advice about last night’s events, but he didn’t know how to ask Ron without making himself sound like a complete bastard. Ron was known for his fierce protection of his younger sister. Harry was so distracted, he barely noticed the Owl Post arriving.
A commotion across the room disturbed his thoughts. A Howler had been delivered to an unfortunate Hufflepuff third year. Harry looked up to see who it was and he spotted Slytherin Draco Malfoy watching with great interest. Harry and Draco accidentally made eye contact, and something within Harry twitched.
“…do you think, Harry?”
Harry became aware that Ron had been, for at least the last five minutes, yapping away, whilst shoving eggs and toast into his mouth as fast as he could.
“Yeah.” said Harry, though he really had no idea exactly what he was supposed to be agreeing with Ron about.
Ron looked at him in consternation. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Harry, were you even listening?”
Busted. “No, sorry, I was a million miles away. What did you say, mate?”
“I was just saying that I don’t think the Cannons have a hope of doing any better in the Quidditch this year. Then I asked you if you thought they had a chance of winning the competition.”
“Oh.” said Harry. Quidditch was the last thing on the raven haired boy’s mind. “No, they’ve not got much of a chance at all.” He tried gallantly to pay attention to his best friend, but he could see Ginny talking to Hermione at the end of the Gryffindor table, and he reckoned he knew exactly what they were discussing.

It was quite late when Harry finished Quidditch practice that evening, and was very dark in the castle when he returned. He had just reached the top of the main staircase, when someone came streaking around the corner and ran straight into him. Harry began to topple backwards, flailing, trying to grab something to stop him falling down the stairs to certain death. His hand connected with the outstretched arm of the other person, and he was pulled him back from the edge of the step.
Their bodies connected, and Harry felt the other person grab him in a tight embrace. He could feel warm breath on his neck and hesitated for a moment, enjoying the feeling of being so close to another person.
He looked into the face of the person who was holding him, and both of them leapt apart as if they’d been electric shocked.
“Why don’t you watch where you’re going, Potter.” spat Draco Malfoy, recovering in excellent form.
“Me?” Harry shouted back, a little over-zealously. “I’m not the one steaming around the castle at 9.00 at night!”
Draco narrowed his eyes, glared at Harry and stalked off, leaving Harry to puzzle over what had just happened. Had he really just enjoyed being so close to Draco?
He tried to put the thought out of his mind, and skulked back to the common room, where he found Ron embroiled in a game of Exploding Snap with Seamus Finnigan. He flopped down into the nearest cushy armchair, and watched as the cards exploded, leaving Ron with singed eyebrows.
Harry was just settling into a nice state of nothingness, save for the occasional thought to Malfoy, when the portrait hole opened and Ginny toppled through it, scattering a huge stack of books she’d been carrying. Neville Longbottom, who was nearest the scene, rushed to help, while Harry stayed put in his easychair, steeling himself for Ginny’s inevitable approach.
He knew she’d come and perch herself on his lap, and he wasn’t sure he wanted her to do that. It vaguely crossed his mind that it might be okay if Draco did that, but he wasn’t really sure what he wanted.
Unfortunately for Harry, Ron, who was recovering from his latest Exploding Snap-related injury, saw his sister fall and noticed that Harry, who was supposed to be her boyfriend, did nothing.
