I am merely using the characters, and putting them into situations that
I most definitely know will never occur in the real books, which are much
better than anything I can write!
RESOLUTIONS
Chapter 1: Justice For All?
Hermione
Granger sat quietly in the back of the courtroom as the lawyers continued in a
ping-pong fashion as they continued on with the trial. The courtroom was filled with witches and
wizards that poured out the door as those in those in the back tried to push
towards the front to get a glimpse of the defendant as he sat, face not showing
an ounce of emotion while his fate was argued without his participation.
It was four
years since the end of the war. Hermione
had spent the final year, when she should have been stressing over passing her
Newts, instead, helping Harry to navigate the globe in search of the remaining
four Horcruxes that would allow him to fulfill the destiny
that he wanted—killing Voldemort. Helga Hufflepuff’s
cup, surprisingly, was found easily in Hogwart’s
trophy case. Harry destroyed that
easily. The locket seemed to evade his
hands, until it was found in the possession of a dead Mundungus
Fletcher. It seemed that being in
constant contact with the Horcrux when he removed it
from 12 Grimmauld
Place caused his health to decline until it
finally overtook and killed him. Unfortunate for him, but fortunate for Harry and the rest of the Wizarding world, since he did not have a chance to sell it
to someone else.
Nagini slithered onto Hogwarts just before his master
followed, in an attempt to kill Harry four years earlier. Harry destroyed the Horcrux-snake
much like he had to the monster in his second year—déjà vu setting in
again. As Voldemort
approached the young adult, Harry looked around at his other perplexed order
members. For, try as they might, they
could not find the final Horcrux. But then, Harry turned to Hermione with
pleading eyes. He had discovered
something. In a selfless act, Harry
turned his wand on himself. The death of
the Boy-Who-Lived-Until-Almost-The-End was devastating, but it gave the rest of
the Order members the chance to easily overtake and destroy Voldemort. The sacrifice would be honored for
generations to come.
In the four
years since consisted of trial after trial as the death eaters that accompanied
Voldemort to Hogwarts were all rounded up after the
defeat confused them all. They were all
easily convicted, and they were now housed in Azkaban. They were easy to convict, given they were
all surrounding and supporting Voldemort as he
approached Harry. He seemed to have
brought his entire army, wives and children and all, with him to what he
thought was to be his greatest moment, yet turned out to be his last stand.
But one
death eater had not been there. Be as it
may, Severus Snape had not
made an appearance at the school that evening.
Nobody had heard from him since he left the grounds running after
Dumbledore’s death. Not until, however,
he had shown up at Headmaster McGonagall’s office three months earlier. He was silent. He said not a word as the Headmaster summoned
an Auror as he sat quietly in a chair. The Headmaster now sat silently on the Wizengamot as the final death eater faced charges for the
murder of the late Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
Hermione
sat in the back of the courtroom, next to Ron Weasley,
hoping to see the man that had given them 6 years of grief and then robbed them
of a mentor join the rest of his brethren in the depths of Azkaban. But, it wasn’t looking good.
He was
charged with the murder based solely on the deceased Harry Potter’s reports of
what he had seen at the top of the astronomy tower. He wasn’t even charged with following the
worst wizard of the age, Voldemort, since there was
absolutely no evidence. Snape had still not said a single word. His defense counsel,
however, seemed to be dominating the trial.
The magical
science office had found that Albus Dumbledore did
not die of an avada kedavra
spell. It seemed that evidence showed
that Dumbledore in fact died of an unknown poison in his system. Since his death, there had been no evidence
to back up Harry’s account, and none of the death eaters that were present at
the event were willing to talk. The rest
of the evidence, including Snape’s knocking out poor
Professor Flitwick was only circumstantial, and did
not prove murder.
The defense
counsel completed his case, and the Wizengamot
adjourned to discuss the case. Hermione
was on the verge of tears. Although she
had gotten over the deaths that had plagued the final years of school, and had
in fact moved on to take over the elusive man’s prior post as Potions Master of
Hogwarts, and following the current Headmaster as Head of Gryffindor House, she
couldn’t help but hope that her late Mentor’s death be punished.
Hermione
followed Ron into the lobby as he put his hand on her shoulder, knowing there
were no words. She rarely saw him
anymore—as he was constantly traveling as the keeper of the Chudley
Cannons. She took a deep breath, hoping
it was almost over as she saw Minerva McGonagall walking towards them.
“Ron,
Hermione,” the older woman said frantically.
“Hermione, may I have a word in my office in the back.”
“Yes, of
course Minerva. Excuse me, Ron.” Ron nodded as she silently followed the woman
into the back. Curious eyes followed the
two Gryffindors, knowing there was something going
on.
“Please sit
down, Hermione,” Minerva said as she settled behind a large desk in a plain
room. “We have a . . . situation, and
I’m going to have to ask for your help.”
“Anything, Minerva.
You know I would do anything to help but this bastard—excuse me—away.”
Minerva
closed her eyes, taking a stifled breath.
“That’s the problem, Hermione.
Apparently, all of the other witches and wizards on the panel believe
that Severus is not guilty.”
Hermione
moved to interrupt, but Minerva stopped her with her hand.
“Please let
me explain. I have pleaded with them
during the entire trial. They will not
comply with allowing him to go to Azkaban.
They want to set him free, and offer him a position with the Ministry. I obviously wouldn’t agree with that, but I
only have one vote. Fortunately,
however, I have come up with an idea that might be a sort of
compromise—allowing us to have constant supervision over Severus
Snape, but at the same time giving him the freedom
that the Wizengamot feels he
so deserves. They have agreed, but we
cannot make it final without your agreement.”
“What is
your solution, Minerva?” Hermione asked
carefully.
“He will be
your assistant.”
“WHAT?” Hermione suddenly started talking
quickly. “Minerva, I don’t think I can
do it. Being around
him that much. I’ll constantly be
reminded of Professor Dumbledore’s death.
He hates me. Who’s to say he just
won’t leave. Please, there has to be
another way—“
“Hermione, calm down.
I need you to be strong. You are
the only one who can do this. I know
because you’re strong, and you’re a Gryffindor.
They won’t release him to me because, I think
they fear I will be too strong on him.
But they agreed to release him to one of my employees. He hasn’t muttered a word since he came to my
office, and he appears to be docile. He
can help you with marking and preparing some potions. We at least know he’s competent. As for your question about him leaving, that
won’t be a problem. He will be bound to
the castle unless you choose to accompany him out. It’s as close to a prison sentence as we can
get. His quarters will be next to yours
so that you can keep an eye on him. You
will be able to enter his quarters, but he will not be able to enter yours
unless you invite him.”
“I’m… I
don’t know what to say. I’m scared, I’m
overwhelmed…”
“Don’t be
scared. Please do this. I know I can force you, but I don’t want to
do that. It’s the only way to keep him
from slipping into the darkness again.
Perhaps we can find out what truly happened. If we let him go, for all we know, he could
be murdering innocent muggles every other day.”
“I’ll do
it,” Hermione reflected quietly. “But,
if we find out he has committed any additional crimes, we need to be able to
return him to be tried and sent to Azkaban.”
“Thank you
Hermione,” Minerva
said as a weight seemed to lift from her mind.
“I assure you if there is any more evidence, for any reason at all,
there WILL be another trial.”
***
Hermione
left the Ministry with Ron, Minerva, and Severus Snape. A spell had
been placed such that Snape could not move more than
10 feet away from her until they were within the Hogwart’s
walls.
Ron hugged
Hermione as he prepared to apparate back to the
location of his next Quidditch game. He had already missed three matches, and the
Coach would not let him stay away any longer.
“Be strong. If anyone can do
this, you can. You’re strong.”
“Thank you
Ron. I’ll owl you.”
Ron gave
her one more grin, and then apparated away. Minerva, Snape and
herself portkeyed back to the castle, where Minerva
escorted the two down towards Hermione’s quarters, which were located in the
dungeons, next to the Potions classroom.
