Save the Best for Last
For sixth year Remus Lupin, the winter holidays at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was shaping up to be even more boring for the young werewolf than previous years. All three of his best friends had gone home for the holidays, James Potter and Sirius Black to the Potter’s house and Peter Pettigrew to his family’s winter home.
Remus sighed. It wouldn’t have been that bad for him if he hadn’t had so much fun that previous summer. Ever since he was bitten as a young child of seven his parents had tried to keep him sheltered. After all, they knew Headmaster Dippit’s no admittance for magical creatures policy for Hogwarts.
Then, the year before he turned eleven, a new headmaster took over Hogwarts. Headmaster Dumbledore had a much more tolerant view towards magical creatures and for sure, the summer after his eleventh birthday, Remus received a Hogwarts letter. But ever since then, his parents grew distant. They continued to distance themselves from their son over the years.
It all came to a head the previous summer when his parents had decided to take a vacation, minus Remus. They paid for a room at the Leaky Cauldron for the summer. Remus tried to stay out as late as he could at night so he wouldn’t alert the owner Tom that he was a werewolf.
After a week of doing nothing at night, Remus decided to explore Muggle London around the pub. He was able to find a couple Muggle night clubs within walking distance of the Leaky Cauldron.
The next night, Remus visited the first of the clubs he saw and he observed the clientele. While it looked fairly popular, Remus wasn’t keen on going to a straight club. The second club was also a straight club, and so was the third. Then, finally, he was rewarded at the fourth club. Of course, the name Golden Staff should have clued him in when he saw it the day before.
After a short wait, he was inside the club. One he was inside, his senses were overloaded with pounding music, flashing lights, and the scent of arousal and sex. A bar illuminated by neon lights took up the left wall of the club. In the middle was a large dance floor, filled with writhing bodies and a disk jockey. In the shadows of the right side of the club, couples were engaged in various sexual activities.
Remus became a regular visitor of the club after that night, going ever night except for those three days a month-the one before, after and the day of the full moon. On the nights that he went to the club, by the end of the night he had usually found a willing person to sleep with.
However, Remus wasn’t stupid. He knew that as a werewolf, he was able to impregnate a man-but only if that man was his mate. And the only way for a man to become a werewolf’s mate was for the werewolf to actually take charge and top during sex. And as a registered werewolf, Remus knew that if he got someone pregnant, mate or not, there was a chance that the child could be taken away. He thanked Merlin that he had taken the initiative to insist that he be the bottom in all of his encounters.
Remus was pulled out of his thoughts by his friend Lily Evans sitting next to him in the common room. “Hey Remus,” Lily said. “Are you ok?”
He sighed. “Yeah, I was just thinking about the summer.”
The red head smiled sadly at him. “Don’t worry about your parents; they’ll realize what a mistake they made one day.”
Remus smiled. “Thanks for that Lily, but I actually had more fun last summer than any other summer spent with my parents.”
“So you really liked going to that club?” the girl asked.
The tawny haired boy blushed. “No one judged me there. No one knew what I am. To them I was just another gay guy out for a good time. Every partner I found treated me like an equal.”
Lily smiled at Remus. “Then it was good for you. Now, I’ve finally convinced Severus to meet with me. He didn’t appreciate James’ actions towards him when Severus insulted me. Do you have the gift you said you got him?”
Remus nodded. “It’s up in the dorm. I’ll get it. I’d give it to him myself but he’s been avoiding me. I really want to thank him for tutoring me in potions.”
Lily smiled at him as she took the wrapped gift from him after he retrieved it. “I’ll tell him you said thank you for all the tutoring he gave you. Well I’m off. Merlin I’m glad that he’s the only Slytherin staying this year. See you later Remus!”
The brown haired young man watched his friend walk out the portrait hole. One the redheaded girl disappeared from sight, he sighed. With nothing else to do but start his homework, Remus decided to go up to his room to take a nap.

Lily Evans hurried down the stairs towards the dungeons, hoping she wouldn’t be late. Nothing annoyed her surly friend more than tardiness, well except for maybe James Potter and Sirius Black’s continued existence. All the same, with Severus’ recent troubles, Lily didn’t wish to try his limited patience. With that thought in mind, she continued down the stairs.
“You were almost late,” drawled a silky voice from her left.
Lily whirled around to look at the dark haired Slytherin that casually leaned against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. “But I wasn’t Severus and it’s nice to know that you will never change. Shall we?” she asked.
Severus smirked and he led the way to his private room that he was granted earlier that year due to his status as the potions professor’s lab assistant, which sometimes resulted in unusual hours for the teen.
Lily followed Severus into the room and she immediately moved over to a cradle that was being watched over by a house elf. “Hi Weld,” Lily said, greeting the elf.
“Master Severus, baby has been fed and is lying down in the cradle,” the elf said.
“Thank you Weld. You may go,” Severus said. The elf nodded and disappeared with a crack.
The baby stirred and began to cry softly. Lily reached inside the cradle and she took the baby out. “Shh, it’s ok Marilee,” Lily crooned. The little girl quieted immediately. “Whoa, she’s never quieted when I hold her before.” Severus walked up to Lily and he sniffed her.
“You smell like her father,” Severus said flatly. He took his daughter from his friend and he turned to look out of his window that looked out into the lake. A merman swam by.
“I was talking to him right before I came down here. Oh that reminds me,” she said, reaching into her bag. She pulled the present out that Remus gave her to give to him. While walking towards Severus, she held it out to him. “Remus sent this with me for you.”
Severus turned around and he looked at Lily suspiciously. He put the sleeping Marilee back inside her cradle before turning back to his friend. “Why would he get me something?”
“Severus you need to talk to him. Something has been off with him this year. It is obvious that something is wrong with him. His senses should have sniffed you out as his mate long ago. Not only his mate, but a mate that was pregnant with his child. It’s like he doesn’t remember…” Their eyes locked as they both got a thought.
“You don’t think…?” Severus started.
“He’s been obliviated?” Lily asked.
“But that wouldn’t fool the wolf,” Severus pointed out.
“He doesn’t remember what he does during the full moons. And Sirius told me that ever since school started this year the wolf has been searching for something or someone during the full moon. I think Moony remembers you,” Lily pointed out.
Severus contemplated that thought as he opened the present. The package contained two potions books, one that Severus owned and Remus knew it. He opened the cover. “Oh my…”
“What?” Lily asked, turning. She was flabbergasted by the look of awe on Severus’ face. “Severus?”
“He got me a signed first edition of Rare and Unusual Potions,” Severus said quietly.
“What’s the other one?” Lily asked shocked at the gift that Remus had bought Severus.
Severus opened the second book and he smirked. “I see he remembered my fondness for firewhisky.” He showed Lily the hidden compartment in the book where a bottle of Odgan’s Old Firewhisky lay.
“Severus, you can’t ignore these gifts. It’s obvious he cares deeply for you. Go to him. Remind him that you’re his mate. Introduce him to his daughter,” Lily insisted.
Severus looked at Lily with a blank look. “Do you think a snarky potions apprentice and a newborn daughter are suitable Christmas presents for a teenage werewolf?”
Lily smiled. “I think they’re perfect presents.”

Remus felt slightly confused as he climbed down the passage to the Shrieking Shack on Christmas night. He remembered the letter he had received that morning from Severus asking him to come to the shack at eight.
His nose tickled suddenly with a familiar scent, he just couldn’t place it. He climbed the stairs to the room where he usually transformed. As he got closer to the room a soft mewling sound reached his ears. Confusion grew as he opened the door.
Severus stood before the boarded up window, looking through the cracks, in his arms a bundle. His head turned towards Remus’ entrance. Severus carefully put the bundle down on the bed and Remus had to curb his curiosity. It was probably a bag of potions ingredients, Remus reasoned.
“You wanted to see me Severus?”
Severus took a deep breath. “I wanted to talk to you about my Christmas presents…and last summer.”
Remus felt his confusion rear it’s head once more, what did the presents that he got for Severus have to do with last summer? He asked as much.
Once again, Severus took in a deep breath. “What do you remember about last summer?” he asked carefully.
Remus’ brow furrowed. “My parents went on vacation and they arranged for me to stay at the Leaky Cauldron for the summer, I found this great Muggle club where I could just be myself and I spent almost every night there. August 31st is still a little fuzzy for me though. Must have drunk more than I thought,” he answered.
The black haired teen stepped closer. “Remus, you have to believe me when I tell you this next thing. We- that is Lily and I- believe you were obliviated on August 31st.”
“Why? Why do you think that?” Remus asked. His next question was cut off by a pair of firm, warm lips atop his own. A silky, wet tongue caressed his bottom lip, asking for and receiving admittance into the warm cavern. Tongues dueled for minutes before retreating as Severus pulled back. “MINE! ” Remus growled grabbing Severus by the hair and pulling him back in for another kiss.
However, Severus backed up out of Remus’ reach. “Do you remember me now? Do you remember me Moony?”
That last word, the sound of his wolf’s name on Severus’ lips, brought forward the memory of his last night at the club. The familiar scent of Severus, the sensation of hot lips and silky tongue against his, the feel of a hard cock against his own, the exquisite feeling of thrusting into Severus’ tight sheath, and the satisfying memory of coming inside his partner, marking Severus as his mate. That sobering thought brought him back to the present. “I marked you as my mate. I…took you? How could I have forgotten that?”
Severus approached Remus again, taking his hands. “Remus, I strongly believe my cousin obliviated you. He owns the club. And you were correct when you said that when you went there you would not be judged. The Golden Staff is a club for werewolves. My cousin is the mate of a female werewolf. He obliviated your memory I guess to protect me.” Severus glanced at the bed than back at Remus. “Remus, there’s someone I want you to meet.” The dark haired teen walked over to the bed and he picked the bundle up. He walked back to Remus and he placed the bundle in Remus’ arms.
“What-” Remus stopped as the blanket slipped to reveal the sleeping face of a baby.
“Meet your daughter, Marilee,” Severus said quietly. As Remus stood there dumbfounded Marilee opened her eyes and she looked up into Remus’ amber eyes. She smiled a toothless grin.

After the holidays, Remus visited Severus and the baby every night. When the school year ended, Severus and Remus stayed at the Leaky Cauldron with baby Marilee. Once they graduated, they moved into a flat in Muggle London close to the Golden Staff…and their jobs.
They weren’t rich, and they had to be careful not to reveal the fact that they had a daughter, but the most important thing was…they loved her. She was raised in love the way the two of them weren’t.

A slim, woman’s hand closed a leather bound book with a resounding thump. She looked up at the two men that were standing in the doorway, staring at her. “Thank you for letting me read this, Dad, Father,” she said, smiling at her parents.
“Your welcome Marilee, you deserved to know how we got together and how you came into being,” Severus said. He smiled at his sixteen year old daughter as she bounced up and gave him and his mate a hug.
“I love you guys,” she said, smiling that familiar grin at them.
Remus and Severus felt their hearts swell with love for their daughter as they hugged her back. Though she was young, she was already a woman in their eyes. She was everything to them.
