~The confrontation could have gone smoother, Harry thought, as he rubbed at his aching head. A faint burning itch, just under the skin gnawed at him. He wasn't certain what hex Malfoy had used, but it definitely fulfilled its purpose. Harry thought that he would go mad from the feeling if Hermione didn't come up with a counter-curse, and fast.
Harry hadn't known that Malfoy's spells could pack such a punch. The last they'd met, Malfoy was still a weak, whiny brat. Obviously that had changed. Could there actually be some semblance of power beneath that abrasive, yet somehow aloof exterior?
"Harry," said Hermione quietly, setting another book aside and reaching for the quickly diminishing stack by the foot of her chair. "Are you sure you don't know what Malfoy said?"
That was the reason for Harry's headache. He'd been agonizing over the exact phrasing Malfoy had used when he'd smacked Harry with his wand. At first Harry had only gawked at him, disbelieving, feeling the after-sting of the slap. But then he'd felt the burning itch beneath his skin, slowly spreading out from the lingering sting. The mark was still angry and red, three days later. Harry wanted to cut it off his face.
Malfoy had said something when he smacked Harry. What was it? Oh, Merlin, if Hermione didn't come up with something soon, Harry would do something unbelievably stupid just to make the discomfort end….
"I don't know, Hermione," said Harry, voice quiet despite his frustration. "It was Latin."
"I know. You said that already. Do you have any idea…? Any at all, Harry. What did it sound like? It's a start."
Groaning, Harry clamped his hand over his ears and squeezed his eyes shut, trying to think back to the beginning. Malfoy hadn't looked surprised to see Harry, though they'd parted ways in sixth year and hadn't met up since. In fact, Malfoy looked like he had been expecting a visit from someone in the Order of the Phoenix for long time coming. It was Harry's untoward proposition that had startled him. He'd laughed, even as he whipped his wand out and struck, drawling….
"Immundum sanguis," said Harry, remembering. Hermione started, eyes growing wide at first, then narrowing in anger. "He said, 'Immundum sanguis, Potter. From bad beginning to bad beginning…' What does it mean?"
Hermione pursed her lips. "It means," she replied tightly, "dirty blood."
