It had become a Christmas tradition for Harry to string boughs of evergreen and holly at the start of November. He'd charm the portraits to sing Christmas songs whenever someone passed – much to their indignant condemnation– and hung tinkling gold bells in all the wreaths on the windows and doors. He'd persuade Draco to take off work and go with him to pick out and harvest Christmas trees for the house and surrounding property. And he built cozy, sheltered, fur-lined nests to hide in the garden. The fairies always came, attracted by the Christmas cheer.
~
Of the nests in the garden, Harry always reserved one for a very special fairy – a Mistle Fairy, pale as ice, with a shock of messy black hair, and dressed in silver and gold. He was not as cheerful as the other fairies, and was less than half as kind. But he had a heart of gold, hidden deep inside himself, and it showed each Christmas Eve. Thus, Harry dubbed him Fairly Eventide, and laughed at his every scowl.
~
Eventide liked Draco best, and took to his hair each year, mussing it up adorably. Draco always complained about it, and groused that no one would take him seriously with a fairy hiding in his hair. He thought that Harry never noticed how they clung to one another when they were alone, cuddling by the fire, sharing secrets and scheming until they drifted off to sleep.

"Let's have a Christmas feast this year," Draco said one morning mid-November, as Harry was preparing fruit tarts for their innumerable fairy guests. Harry could only stare at him, confused about this turnabout in Christmas spirit as Draco blithely continued, "You can invite all the Weasleys you want, and I'll have my parents and cousins and friends over. We'll have goose and cranberry stuffing, and all the usual Weasley fare – boar and swan for my friends– and five different desserts. What do you think of quidditch in the morning?" Harry grinned; he thought it was a lovely idea. Draco winked at him as he sauntered to the door and added, "You should invite Longbottom, too. Maybe Eventide will visit in Ginny's hair and make his Christmas wish come true."
~
Harry sent out invitations the very next day, before Draco had a chance to change his mind. He designed the cards himself and attached glistening Christmas stars to each golden envelope. Extra effort was taken to make certain that Draco saw him mail them off, but Draco only smiled at him and called him over for a kiss.
~
Draco kissed with his soul, relinquishing the veneer that chilled like ice. In Harry's arms, his cold touch burned, overwhelmed, consumed. It rushed over Harry like an avalanche, burying him deep, encouraging him to explore the depths and caverns there. It felt like drowning on air, sharp and sincere and severe; it felt like subduing and being subdued. Kissing Draco tasted like candy and love and magic. Harry begged for more.
~
As December got on, the Mistle Fairies began to fly off for days on end. The holiday season truly dawned and there was magic in the air. The Mistle Fairies went in search of kisses.
~
On occasion, Harry could coax Eventide to visit with him, often luring him away from Draco's side with treats or trinkets. This was no struggle, to be honest, for, like Draco, Eventide had a weakness for sweets and shiny charms. And Eventide didn't really mind Harry's company, though he groused and insulted him constantly. Harry was most indulgent with him, knowing that Eventide belonged to him – Draco and him – the product of their Christmas kiss four years ago.

"I've decided that I don't want to be a Mistle Fairy anymore," Eventide sleepily announced one night as he and Draco curled by the fire, tucked into Harry's arms. "I'm tired of hunting reluctant lovers and setting them straight. Do you know how many times I've been hexed? Enough, I say! I want a life that is mine…. Maybe I'll take up another craft – wishes, maybe. There's lots of magic in wishes."

Harry wasn’t certain that Mistle Fairies could simply stop being Mistle Fairies, much the way that cows couldn’t decide not to be cows, or dragons not to be dragons. But Draco thought that Eventide had a lovely idea, and assured Harry that he was underestimating the power of transmogrification. Magic always had a way of working itself out. Harry decided that he would simply sit back and watch.
~
Eventide began to watch thoughtfully as Harry interacted with Draco. Christmas was fast approaching, and the spirit in their house was high. Draco threw himself into preparing for the Christmas feast with a vigor Harry hadn’t expected out of him, and Harry helped out in anyway he could between work and shopping and making certain all of their fairy guests were comfortable for the holiday season. Friends and neighbors dropped by with increasing frequency, staying for dinner and long chats by the fire. Draco’s parents also dropped by more and more often, finding little excuses to visit. Harry knew that they still hadn’t adjusted to the fact that Draco wouldn’t always be home for the holidays, so he didn’t mind when they barged in with House Elves in tow and tried to rearrange Harry and Draco’s life and home. It was a joyous time of year, and everyone deserved the happiness. Usually Harry and Draco were so enraptured in the season that they didn’t miss what they longed for throughout the rest of the year.

Harry woke on Christmas morning to the smell of pork roasting and the feel of Eventide bouncing merrily on his chest. “Happy Christmas, Harry!” he said, wings flitting anxiously, like a puppy’s wagging tail. He gave a spin and Harry noticed that he was decked all in white. He looked like a miniature angel as he chirped, “You’ve got to get up. Draco’s already gone to badger the House Elves about dinner, and there’s still a lot more to be done around the house. And I’ve got lots of work to do as a Dream Fairy. There aren’t any others like me, Harry! Will you help me make more?”
~
Eventide danced around in Harry’s hair all day, mussing it up. Harry didn’t mind. His hair had always been unruly and a little bird’s nest wouldn’t be anything new to him. Draco found it absolutely adorable. They kept sneaking away to snog and grope one another. Mistle Fairies flocked all around them, giggling and singing and congratulating Eventide. Their dinner guests did not find their amorous inclination as endearing, though. Least of all was Lucius Malfoy, who was even more sharp and sour since his stint in Azkaban. Harry and Draco ignored them all, kissing the afternoon and evening away as they daydreamed of Christmas night.
~
Following a loud, somewhat messy feast in the dining room, everyone retired to the drawing room for music and games. They sat over cider, cocoa, and Egg Nog, snacking on excess desserts, and talking amiably. Such a cheery atmosphere set Harry in a blissful mood, and he curled in a chair with Draco snuggled in his lap and Eventide dreamily lounging in his hair. It had been a beautiful Christmas. Harry did not think that he could ask for more.
~
That night, the stars were especially bright, twinkling merrily down on them. A silvery blue moon hung low. Soft breezes drifted through the snow, making a white haze waltz across the lands. Magic grew thick in the air as the night lights waxed and wind-songs danced in through the open windows. Draco laid beneath Harry, shuddering, clutching him closer, gooseflesh prickling his arms. His kisses had never tasted so sweet.
~
The next morning, Eventide the Dream Catcher set off in search of more hopes. Over breakfast Draco had asked what Harry had wished for, and Harry scrunched his nose and replied, “I don’t know.” Eventide wasn’t around to ask. He wouldn’t return until next Christmas.
~
When Eventide did return to his nest the next November, he scrunched his nose at all the noise. He barricaded himself in his garden home for three days, and Harry couldn’t coax him out for the world. Neither treats nor trinkets would avail him. In the end, it was Draco’s soft song that lured Eventide home.
~
“I like that song,” Eventide said in a dreamy voice as he landed softly on Draco’s head. Draco reached up and fondly ruffled his messy black hair. Eventide scowled, but there was no bite in his words when he continued, “Very soothing. Plus it’s quiet in here now. You should sing all the time.” Draco merely smiled.
~
Harry watched his boys, Draco and Eventide, as they lay on the carpet in front of the fire, whispering schemes and secrets. A plump, black-haired, gray-eyed cherub stretched before them, making grabs with chubby fists at fluttering fairies as they dove down and showered him with little kisses. The baby’s eyes were alight with wonder, cheeks flushed from his small exertions, and tiny gurgling exclamations slipped past his full lips. All around them, the fairies were singing jolly songs about the magic of Christmastime. Harry couldn’t agree more.
