Pairing: eventual DM/HP, implied
RW/HG, maybe others
As per usual,
Draco Malfoy found himself facing off against Harry Potter. As per usual, their
insults filled the air. As per usual, Draco’s insults were better, and meaner, but
Potter was still winning. That, however, was where the norm ended. The pair was
in the forbidden forest without any adults around. Unless you counted
unconscious adults, like Hagrid who lay on the ground between them.
The rivals had
detention for fighting in the halls; Snape and McGonagall had come to a joint
decision that the pair should serve it together. Hagrid had needed help
gathering Flightshrooms for Professor Snape and the pair had been assigned to
the task. A miss-fired picking spell had knocked a branch off of a tree and
onto the half-giant’s head.
“You
spineless, bleach-obsessed…horrible shot.”
“That was a truly
pathetic attempt and my hair is naturally this color. Besides, I finally got
him to shut up.” Draco received a glare, and raised an eyebrow back. Harry took
a deep calming breath before replying.
“What are we going
to do now? We can’t just leave him here, and the forest is too dangerous to
stay alone.”
“How should I
know? You’re the school’s resident wonder boy, you figure it out.” Draco folded
his arms and turned his back on the raven haired boy. The blonde’s attitude
pissed Harry off and he voiced a suspicion that he otherwise never would have said
aloud.
“I’d be careful
who you show your back to, Tweedle-dumb and Tweedle-dumber might decide they’re
tired of just looking at your ass and double-team you.”
“Crabbe and Goyle are not gay. Nor
do they look at my ass.” Draco hid his surprise well; he had never thought of
the pair’s relationship as anything more then a close friendship based on
mutual stupidity.
“You honestly
don’t know?” Harry had seen the bullies eyeing Malfoy more then once when they
thought that no one was watching. Harry had assumed that Draco was smarter than
to trust the pair as blindly as they followed him. Draco turned to face the
Gryffindor. Their eyes met and Harry felt naked under the searching gaze.
“What are you
talking about Potter?”
“They watch you;
they look you over when you’re not facing them. They also make out in the east
basement, not a sight you want to walk in on, trust me.” The
boy-who-saw-to-much shuddered in memory.
“You’re trying to
make a fool of me.” The blonde’s voice was strong, but inside he wasn’t so
sure.
“If you honestly
didn’t know, I don’t have to try.” Harry glanced down at the unconscious Hagrid . “This isn’t getting us anywhere. Do you know how
far from the edge of the forest we are?" He picked up the lantern that lay next
to the fallen groundskeeper and looked around.
“Around
one hundred and fifty meters, in that direction.” He pointed a little to
the left of the path they had been on. “That isn’t an exact amount though, and
that would be if we followed a strait path. The one we were on curves, it might
add up to another…” He paused a moment thinking. “thirty perhaps thirty-five meters.”
“You did that in
your head? That’s amazing.” Harry immediately realized and regretted that he had
complimented the Slytherin. “For a jackass.” He added
belatedly.
“Very mature
Potter. Your girlfriend isn’t the only one in the school with a brain. Not that
anyone could tell if they looked at our classmates.”
“Hermione isn’t my
girlfriend.” It didn’t bother him, Hermione was one of his friends, he didn’t
really want anything more form her.
“Oh, that’s right,
she chose the Weasel over you.”
“Ron can have
her.” He hadn’t meant to say it and quickly closed his mouth.
“Poor Potter, are
there problems in paradise? Did the cat finally let out her claws?” Draco was
startled when Harry grabbed the front of his robes and jerked him forward in
anger.
“Hermione is a
wonderful person and one of my closest friends. Simply because I am not
attracted to her, for reasons of my own, does not give you the right to insult
her.” Harry shoved his schoolmate, knocking him to the ground. Malfoy landed on
his ass and glared up at the other teen. Suddenly, his expression changed to
one of comprehension.
“’Reasons
of your own’? You’re a bloody poof.” The Slytherin stood, a smirk
forming. “The great Golden Boy of Hogwarts likes taking it up the ass. The
Daily Prophet will have a heyday with that, not to mention the rest of the
school.”
“Go ahead and tell
them, I’m comfortable with my sexuality, but after your activities with
Parkinson and Krum in the prefect’s bathroom during the tournament, one would
think you’d be more accepting of others' lifestyles.”
“How did you know
about that?”
“You’d be amazed
at how ready to gossip the mermaid is once you have a proper translation spell.
Why did you think Hermione broke up with him?” Harry picked up the lantern that
he had dropped when he had grabbed Malfoy. “We should be concentrating on
getting out of here, not one-upping each other. My carrying spell won’t be able
to lift his weight; do you know a stronger one?” A headshake was the only
response he got. “Well, fuck.”
“No thanks, you’re
not my type. Besides, we aren’t entirely hopeless yet. There is a way that we
can combine our spells and lift him. I doubt that you would agree to it. It
takes a certain level of trust.”
“You trust me?”
“I may hate you,
but you are the most trustworthy person that I know.” The look he received was one of puzzlement
and suspicion. “Don’t tell me that you thought you had to like someone to trust
them, did you?” Draco rolled his eyes, picked himself up and began to dust
himself off. “Think of it this way, you trust that the Dark Lord will kill, you
trust Snape to assign homework and to ridicule Longbottom.
I trust you to be a goody two shoes and not take advantage of anyone, including
myself. Do you get it now?”
“Yeah, I guess, but what
would require my trusting you to be something other then a pompous git?” Malfoy reached into an inner pocket of his robes and
retrieved two connected bracelets.
“These. They are
called Geminery rings; they temporarily merge the
minds of spellcasters to increase the power of a
spell. One side-affect is that sometimes memories, thoughts and feelings cross
between the bound minds. We have to put them on and take them off while they
are connected, but once the first spell is cast they can be separated. The
trust part comes in when thoughts and memories are exchanged. You don’t share
them with other people.” Harry looked at the bracelets warily, not wanting his
memories anywhere near Malfoy’s head. “Scared Potter?”
After another moment of thought, Harry offered his left wrist to the blonde.
“You don’t share,
I don’t share.”
Draco nodded and
put the bracelet on his schoolmate’s wrist. He moved behind Harry, having to
stand within his personal space to latch the second bracelet to his own wrist.
Harry held back a shiver as he felt Malfoy’s body heat. He didn’t feel any
different right away; then, slowly, he sensed something in the forefront of his
mind.
“Concentrate on
the spell.” Draco’s voice filled his ears and mind. Harry drew his wand and
without knowing how he knew, cast the spell at the
same moment that Malfoy did. Hagrid’s body lifted into the air. A soft ‘click’
sounded and the bracelets separated. Malfoy stepped away, but the feeling
of his heat and breath remained strong in Harry’s memory. He had admitted to
himself months ago that he was attracted to his rival, and his reaction to
Malfoy’s proximity reinforced the idea. That was one bit of knowledge that he
hoped would not leak over.
Slowly, the pair
made their way back out to the school grounds. Professors McGonagall and Snape
were talking furiously near Hagrid’s hut as the two emerged from the forest.
“There you are.
What…” The Head of Gryffindor house stopped mid-sentence when she saw the
floating Hagrid. “What happened?” The question was directed at Harry. He
thought for a moment, glanced at Malfoy, then spoke.
“A branch broke
off of a tree and fell on Hagrid’s head. It was weird, it didn’t make a sound when it broke off.”
Harry shrugged and the students lowered Hagrid in unison. The teacher’s didn’t
notice the odd synchronization. Snape turned to
Draco, who nodded that the story was indeed correct. Harry’s hand went to the
bracelet on his wrist. Draco saw the movement and when the teachers turned to
Hagrid, he shook his head.
<We can’t risk
them seeing the bracelets. We’ll have to wait.> Harry almost jumped at the
sound of Draco’s voice in his head.
“I’ll escort the
boy’s back to their dormitories Severus, will you bring Rubeus to the
Infirmary?” The Potion’s master nodded his assent. “Come along Gentlmen.” The group walked in silence back to the castle.
Harry and McGonagall dropped Draco off at the Dungeons before heading to
Gryffindor tower.
Just before the
Professor and Harry reached the portrait of the Fat Lady; the
teen collapsed, his scar on fire. He managed to breathe out one word before he
lost sight of McGonagall.
“Voldemort.”
In his dormitory,
Draco lay in bed willing himself into a dreamless
sleep to keep Harry from seeing them. Without warning, power surged through the
mental bond he had with Harry. “What the…” His body collapsed as his mind took
a journey that Harry’s had made many times before.
What will Harry
see? Why is Draco staying at Hogwarts for Christmas? And who needs a hug?
You’ll just have to wait for Chapter 2.
