Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Description: Hermione learns that reading a book can be dangerous and Snape has some fun. This is a response to the Lost in A book Challenge on WIKTT.
A/N: It is my first time writing for Snape and Hermione so I hope I do them justice. Constructive criticism welcomed it helps me improve my writing but do not be mean just to be mean. ‘The Rose and the Raven’ is one of my favorite Romance Novel. I decided to pay it homage here cause it also sounds like a Hermione/Severus fic.
I would like to thank akathryna for beta reading this for me.
It’s just a book.
Chapter 1
No harm ever came from reading a book
Hermione sat down on Ginny’s bed with the romance novel she had just found down stairs. On the cover was a picture of a tall dark man hidden in shadows and a young woman in a torn dress. The title of the very thick novel simply read, ‘The Rose and The Raven.’
“It has to be mom’s. I just can’t see any of the boys reading that.” Ginny stated while packing her trunk for Hogwarts. She had agreed to go back to school only after Harry had promised her that he would return after finding the Horcruxes and killing Voldemort. That was assuming they could get all that done before the end of the next school year. “Read some out loud and see if it’s any good.”
“Please, let this not be a Betty Neels plot! For once I’d like to have a chance to actually shag the hero!” Hermione mumbled before she started reading. She and Ginny had become close friends over the summer. They both had a hidden passion for romance novel. “She groaned as the driver of the carriage seemed to find every hole or bump in the road,” she started to read aloud. “Her mother, knowing she would rather ride had sent her a letter reminding her that she was a princess now and had to act it.”
Hermione felt tingly all over and then the sensation of someone grabbing her by the waist and pulling. She heard Ginny scream her name and everything went black.
Severus Snape glared at Hagrid where he stood looming in the doorway to the room. He hated having the half giant watching him as he poured the last of the potion down the throat of the still body of Albus Dumbledore.
“I still don’t see how everyone thought that bag of trash was his body.” Hagrid stated.
“Because Dumbledore himself set the illusions. Now be quiet you big buffoon.” Snape snapped still wondering why he had to work with Hagrid on this very important matter.
“Maybe I should have stayed dead.” Dumbledore wheezed. The twinkle was still in his eye but he was obviously very weak. Snape let a rare smile cross his lips for half a second as he looked at the Headmaster,
“It’ll take you a couple of months to recuperate. You scared us for a while there old man. You and your inane schemes.” Snape stopped what he was saying. He suddenly felt tingly and something pulled at his waist as everything went black.

A jolt brought Hermione around. She blinked several times not believing what she saw. She was in the carriage that seemed to be finding every bump in the road. She looked down at herself to see she was wearing a dress that looked like it was out of a King Arthur Movie.
“My lady.” A knight said riding up to the carriage window. “We will be at your stepfathers castle in about an hour. I’ve sent someone ahead to let him know.”
“Thank you Tomes.” Hermione replied, wondering how she knew his name. She looked around the carriage thinking logically about where she was. Realizing she was in that romance book she had been reading, and whatever spell had brought her here had filled her mind with the information she needed to play along.
Hermione sat back and watched the countryside pass by. Her mind quickly went through the wealth of knowledge she had acquired during her years in Hogwarts library trying to bail Ron and Harry out of trouble. Not finding any thing to get her out of this situation she sighed heavily, resigned to her fate.
Severus looked around the room he was now in. There was a giant four-poster bed in the middle of the room. The quilt was black with green pattern woven through out and the curtains were silver. The desk and wardrobe were also black with green accents. The room was an interior room with no windows. It was almost exactly like his room in Hogwarts except for the fact that the mirror did not talk and the one painting of a snake did not move. It made him feel more at home then he had in months. The one thing that he hated on first sight was what he was wearing. The black tights showed off his body in ways he was not comfortable with. Then the green tunic with silver trim almost made him look handsome. An image he had endeavored to squash over the years for two reasons. One it helped keep people away and to not blow his cover and two imagine trying to teach girls that were lusting over you in potion class.
There was a timid knock at the door. He turned sharply, missing the swish of his cloaks, “What!”
“Forgive me sir.” Came the trembling voice. “But the King request you be there to greet his new daughter.”
Snape threw open the door and glared down at the cowering young page. “Well, do you expect me to fly there? Lead the way!” He really wished he could take away points right now.
The page bolted down the hall. Snape followed with long strides. Anyone watching closely as Snape stepped into the sunlight would swear he had hissed at it.
“Ah, glad you could make it Severus.” The King said with an oddly familiar twinkle in his eye. “Beautiful day! Now I want you to be on your best behavior Sev my boy.”
Snape sneered but did not respond as he was now concentrating on the carriage that was pulling up. His eyes narrowed as he watched the door open. He did not know whether to laugh or growl as she stepped out.
She wore a green dress with silver under dress. Her hair had pearls and emeralds woven into it. If it had not been for the Brunette hair coloring he would have never recognized the Gryffindor know it all. When she finally saw him, all he could see in her eyes was hatred.
‘If this was supposed to be her fantasy what the hell is the murdering prat Snape doing in it.’ Hermione thought as she glared at him in a way that would have made him proud. If it had not been directed at him that is.
“Ah, my dear I’m glad to see you made it safely.” The King said taking her hand. “Your mother will be pleased. I have things I must attend to, so my trusted advisor Severus will show you to your rooms.”
Hermione wondered if she had imagined the emphasis he had put on the word trusted. She let the King put her hand in Snape’s. She almost yanked her hand back when he started to bring it to his lips. She did yank it back when he lightly bit the back of the hand after kissing it.
“My lady, please come with me.” Snape quickly caught her hand and tucked it into his arm as he steered her into the castle. He held on tight to her hand as she tried to pull it away from him.
“I’m not your lady! If this is some Death Eater scheme, you and Voldemort have come up with. I will not fall for it! You would be dead right now if magic worked here!” Hermione yelled at him yanking her hand free.
“I’ve never been less afraid in my life.” Snape sneered.
“Why you greasy git!” Hermione went to strike him but he caught her hand.
“Fifty points from Gryffindor!” Snape stated almost feeling better now that he had someone to fight with.
“You can’t take points away from me! You are no longer a teacher; or did your mind turn to jelly while bowing and scraping to your magnificent Dark Lord? You killed Dumbledore!” Snape smirked at her.
“And now you are acting like Potter. Jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts, I had expected better than that from you.” He backed her against a door then reached past her for the door handle. “You look good in Slytherin colors. Maybe I will enjoy being here more then I originally thought.” He whispered in her ear. He then opened the door to her rooms and watched her fall through it to land ungracefully on the floor. He smirked and closed the door.
Hermione stared at the door letting what he had said sink in. She got a horrified look on her face then proceeded to tear the clothes off her body and the jewels out of her hair. She made sure they were destroyed. She was so angry that she did not even hear the door open again.
“My lady. What happened?” Hermione’s handmaiden Melody exclaimed as she looked at the remains of the dress.
“I’ve decided that I will never wear that dress again. In fact, you can take the dress and the jewels to the King’s advisor. Telling him ‘here are your bloody colors.’ Then we’ll decide what I will wear for tonight.” Hermione said, trying to glare a hole in the wall.
The maid gathered everything into the spare dress box she pulled out of the dressing room. She hurried out the door and down the hall the short way to the rooms of Lord Snape. Cautiously knocking on his door, she cringed anticipating his response.
“What the bloody….” He cut himself off seeing the cowering maid. “Well?” he snapped.
“My lady bid me to bring this to you and say…” she trailed off obviously afraid of what he would say.
“Come on.” He growled, “What did Hermione say?”
“She said to tell you.” She swallowed hard. “Here are your bloody colors.’”
Curiosity piqued, Severus took the box and looked inside. He let himself chuckle a little as he looked at the ruined dress. He could not help but wonder if she had taken it off before destroying it, or had she ripped it right from her body. He filed that image away for later use.
“Tell her that this is almost Slytherin of her.” He saw the look of confusion on her face. “She’ll know what that means. Here, take this.” He handed her one of the emeralds. “Your lady and I will probably put you through a lot in the near future. Think of this as an advance apology.” He turned into his room and closed the door.
The maid smiled to herself. She could not wait to see how this courtship turned out. She opened the door to Hermione’s suite and almost skipped in. “My lord asked me to tell you that ‘that was almost Slytherin of you’. He seems nice to me even if he tries to hide it under all that harshness,” she told Hermione happily.
Hermione looked at her as if she had three heads. “What on earth would make you think that?”
“He apologized ahead of time for what you two will put me through and he gave me one of those emeralds.” The maid smiled. “Now what would you like to wear tonight?”
Hermione was flabbergasted for a second. “Anything red and gold.” She ignored the grimace the maid made at her choice of colors. She could not keep from her mind what Dumbledore had said once about judging a man by how he treated those in servitude to him.
She decided to forget about Snape and just try to survive the next three hours of her maid forcing her to look like a lady.
Snape watched as Hermione entered to a small trumpet blast that was due a princess. She blushed almost as deep red as her dress was. He knew she was not used to being in the spotlight. That was usually reserved for Wonder Boy with Weasley lapping up what ever was left.
Snape stood up and pulled her chair out for her. She glared at him as she sat down and he pushed her chair in.
“How very un-Slytherin for you to pull my chair out.” Hermione sneered.
“There you go showing your ignorance by jumping to conclusion again.” He sneered right back at her. “Slytherins are the nobility of the wizarding world and therefore know how to act like gentleman.” Hermione snorted at this but Snape ignored her. “Besides you’re royalty here and when in Rome…”
“You don’t have to hurt yourself on my account. Since we both know that being anything but a backstabbing evil greasy git must hurt you.” Hermione did not see the anger growing in his eyes “Dumbledore trusted you. I trusted you! Then you killed him.”
Snape felt the anger drain out of him. She had trusted him. “I had to do what I did. I am not at liberty to discuss what Dumbledore ordered me to do. But if I could change things I would.”
“Are you saying Dumbledore ordered you to kill him?” Hermione asked not believing her ears.
“Among other things.” Snape did not feel comfortable with where this conversation was going. He flagged down a passing page whose tray was loaded down with food. He put a portion of the duck dish on Hermione’s plate.
“I can get my own food, thank you.” Hermione stated, still trying to digest all he had said.
“I’m sure you could, but unless you want to bite into body parts that are no longer viewed as edible in our time I suggest you let me choose.” He enjoyed watching where her mind took that by the expression on her face. “I see you’re back into your old Gryffindor colors. Even if they don’t suit you.”
“Well much to your disappointment, I find nothing else in my wardrobe as green and silver.” Hermione said gleefully
“That is such a shame.” He placed a helping of potatoes on her plate.
“Hermione, how do you find our castle here?” The King asked.
“I’m finding I’m enjoying myself more and more each minute.” Hermione replied. Snape raised an eyebrow at this but she ignored him.
“Well the day after tomorrow my daughter will be joining us.” The King informed them. “So I’ve decided four days from now we’ll have a ball.”
“Oh how wonderful,” the queen said, who was Hermione’s mother in this reality. “We’ll invite all the eligible men in the area. Well dear you only have two more years before you become a spinster.”
Snape almost choked on his wine he had been taking a sip of. The image of Hermione as an old woman with twenty cats was laughable. Even with her glaring daggers at him.
“Don’t worry dear.” The King reassured his new wife. “As a princess she’ll have hundreds of suitors. Plus it is Severus’ job to make sure a suitable match is made.” It was Hermione’s turn to laugh as Snape went white.
“But Mother, Father I find I lack the attire for such an event.” Hermione informed them hoping it would get her out of going.
“Nonsense!” The King said. “Severus will rectify that situation for you. Ah! Dessert.” The King flagged down one of the pageboys who were loaded down with sweets.
“He kind of reminds me of a younger version of Dumbledore.” Snape’s sultry voice was right at her ear sending shivers down her spine.
She turned so their faces were an inch apart. “Try not to kill this one!” She pushed the chair backward and excused herself. She was headed for a bath and then bed.
