Chapter
One: Proposal
The
word Proposal normally proved to be a hard word to face. Proposals are usually
something that makes men cower and women sigh in delight, currently it was
making Draco grit his teeth and squint his eyes.
How
could the word proposal prove to be so difficult to find? It was a long word
and had all those ‘O’s in it. How could that be hard to find?!
He
ran his eyes back and forth over the find a word. Why was it that once he found
three words in a row he suddenly couldn’t find a large word like ‘Proposal’?
He
gave up. Breakfast started in five minutes. He was already dressed in his
school uniform and his hair was already combed back, he was just waiting for
his friends, and while he was waiting he was keeping himself busy with a find a
word he had gotten from his Aunt.
Closing
the book and shoving it into his back-pack. Draco stood up from the lounge and
made his way towards the exit, calling to his friends to hurry up.
“Wait
for me!” Pansy shouted as she jumped down the stairs, plaiting her hair as she
approached him. “All I needed was five more minutes, why are you in such a
rush?” She snipped as she tied the plait off with a green ribbon.
Draco
opened the portrait for her, allowing her to exit and spoke as she passed. “We
have only five minutes to get to breakfast” before he closed the door and
joined the girl in a brisk walk.
“Is
it that you’re worried of being late to breakfast or something else?” Pansy spoke in a lacy voice, her blue eyes
sparkling with mirth as she glanced over to him.
Draco
scowled, and picked his pace up. That girl knew too much for her own good.
“You
finished that ‘Find a Word’ yet?” The next question was asked after a three
minutes silence.
Pushing
open the Great Hall doors, Draco kept his gaze firmly planted on the Slytherin
table as he made his way over to it. “No, I’ve finished about eight pages, but
I’m stuck at the moment” he admitted as he briskly slid into a spare sit near
the middle of the table, his eyes still firmly planted now on the food that was
laid out in front of him.
“I’ve
always hated ‘Find a Words’ I can never find anything, it takes me hours. I
like Cross puzzles” the girl admitted as she made herself comfortable beside
him.
Choosing
to shrug instead of continuing the boring subject, the blonde Slytherin began
to pull certain foods onto his plate.
“Hey,
what did Potter want with you yesterday? Or is that a personal topic?” Pansy
asked a few minutes later as she finished off her pumpkin juice.
Glaring
at his food and then risking his gaze to slide over to the Gryffindor side of
the room, Draco spotted Potter, his head was down studying some subject while
he forked food into his mouth, a thoughtful frown was on his face.
“Nothing,
he didn’t get to say anything… McGonagall interrupted us” he grumbled as he turned
his attention back to his plate.
“Oh,
pity. It looked like it was important, the way he grabbed you like that and
told us to continue on” the girl commented with what could only be considered
as an evil grin.
“Pansy?”
“Hmm?”
“Shut
up” Draco hissed as he stabbed his bacon angrily.
Potter
did seem to have something important to say. He had looked at him rather
intimidating, almost daring him to start a fight. It had been eating at him all
night. What had Potter wanted to tell him?
He
had been acting a little off during the day, and when it was just after big
lunch and Draco and his friends were making their way towards their next class,
Potter had suddenly approached them from behind, grabbed Draco’s arm and told
everyone else to continue on… He had then released Draco, told him he needed to
discuss something with him but after a small silence to see if the blonde was
going to walk away or bite back some kind of remark, Potter was about to
continue, but then McGonagall had walked around the corner and told them to
grow up and get to class.
The bitch.
He
had been interested to hear what the teen wanted to tell him. They had been
rather quiet around each other since the war ended. They argued here and there,
and occasionally Draco would throw a bitting remark at him.... But they were in
a way quiet around each other.
“Class
time” Pansy announced suddenly, making Draco jump and look over to her.
Glancing
to the clock that hung just behind Dumbledore’s chair, he saw that he had seven
minutes to get to Transfiguration.
“Transfiguration
is just around the corner, we have plenty of time” he said although he pushed
his plate away and stood.
Pansy
shrugged as she grabbed her bag and started walking towards the doorway. “I
want to get their early so that I have time to find a seat and settle” she
stated as she flung one of her two plaits over her shoulder.
Walking
out of the Great Hall and making their way down the corridor, Draco was
reminded of the term déjà vu as his arm was grabbed, making him come to a stop.
Looking
over his shoulder he once again found Potter standing there, looking as stern
as yesterday. “Potter, did you know that calling someone usually gets the same
effect as roughly grabbing someone by the arm?” Draco asked with an arched
brow.
Potter
ignored him and looked to Pansy, but before he even played along with Draco’s
déjà vu, Pansy smirked. “Let me guess, you want to speak with Draco alone?” She
asked as she grabbed Draco’s back-pack and tugged it off his shoulder. “I’ll
save you a seat” she stated before turning and walking away.
That
woman!
Looking
back to Potter, Draco pulled his arm out of the other teens grip and turned and
faced him. “Right Potter, what is it?” he asked, his heart beating faster then
normal as Potter’s silent green eyes looked right at him.
“A
proposal” he stated suddenly, making the blonde blink in surprise.
“Proposal?”
he asked, tilting his head back to study the brunette’s face.
Potter
nodded. “I want to offer you a proposal” he stated simply.
Draco
smirked. “Aren’t you meant to be on one knee?”
A
small smile slipped onto Potter’s lips as he looked back at Draco. Although the
blonde seemed to be expecting him to drop to one knee, he continued while still
standing. “My proposal is that our fighting stops, and with it you stop picking
fights with Ron and Hermione” He stated, his voice steady.
His
eyebrows shooting up in shock, Draco looked at the brunette. “Are you
serious?!” Potter nodded. “We stop fighting? You can’t just request something
like that!” He stated, “Things don’t work like that”.
Potter
seemed undeterred. “Why not?” His answer seemed simple
enough, but it left Draco’s mouth opening and closing.
“Well
-- I – Because it just doesn’t!” He snapped finally. “I hope you didn’t offer
Voldemort this proposal…” he trailed off, eyeing the teen, looking for signs
that he’s lost it.
Once
again a small smile slipped over the brunettes lips. “Listen. I don’t want to
fight with you anymore. After everything we did for each other during the war
it seems off to fight” he clarified somewhat.
Draco
shook his head. “Maybe, but you can’t just approach me and suddenly say that we
won’t fight anymore. Maybe I hate you and want to fight with you” he stated.
Raising
a brow, Potter examined Draco for a while before shrugging. “Fine, if that’s what
you want. I just don’t see the point of it, we hardly fight that much anyway so
I thought it’d just be wise to grow up and offer a hand that I had rejected
seven years ago” he stated with a wave of his hand before making his way past
the stunned teen. “Forget I offered anything.”
The
nerve!!
“Potter!” Turning around and glaring at the teen that was
now once again facing him with a calm outeriour,
Draco studied him for a while, still glaring before he shook his head. “You’re
offering me what I had offered you seven years ago? In
hopes of what? Bringing calm and piece to the world?”
Shaking
his head, Potter hooked his thumbs into the pockets of his pants. “No, I’m
offering it in hopes of building a friendship with someone I know I can
possibly get along with, and stopping a meaningless fight that started because
of some words spoken seven years ago by eleven year old juveniles” He stated.
Draco
blinked, once, twice, three times before he shook his head. “Let me think this
over…” he stated. Potter nodded.
Giving
him one last look, Draco made his way past him and towards his classroom.
That
would have to be the most unexpected proposal he had even been offered.
Walking
into the classroom with less then a minute to spare, Draco sat numbly beside
Pansy, ignoring her curious glance in his direction and then towards the
doorway when Potter entered with Granger and Weasley at his side.
Wisely
she stayed quiet.
McGonagall
entered the room, her eyes doing a swift headcount of the class as she made her
way towards her desk. “I hope that you have all finished your report on the
safety procedures when involving yourself in Animagus transformations” she
stated as she walked around her desk and sat down. “Because
today we are to do a quiz on it”.
This
information was greeted with groans from all the class members.
“When
will we get to start actually transforming?” Seamus groaned as he hung his head
back in despair. “It’s been almost half a year with all this book work, not
once have we done any practice” he muttered.
“Mr
Fennigan, you should have read the outline for the course before you picked it”
McGonagall snapped with a stern glare. “This is a dangerous subject; if you
don’t know all the theory behind it then you have no chance of surviving the
practice. Years ago a student in my class thought that the theory was useless
and went ahead and tried to transform herself, and she ended up in hospital for
three weeks” She stated once again repeating the story that the students had
heard once every week since they had joined the class.
“Now,
close your books and get out your ink wells and quills. This quiz will be
thirty minutes long, any cheating will be punished accordingly” she warned as
she stood and picked up a pile of parchments at the edge of her desk and began
to walk around the room placing the parchments face down on the tables in front
of the students.
“If
you have a question, put your hand up and wait silently for me to come to you”
She said as she placed the last parchment in front of Weasley.
Putting
his books back into his bag, Draco sighed. Another test.
So far this class was turning out to be the hardest of all his classes. He
wanted to learn how to be an Animagus before he left school, but he had no idea
it would be this difficult. Beside him Pansy huffed and looked at her
parchment, not at all looking eager to turn it over and begin.
“If
I had known I was going to be tested on that stupid report I would have taken
note of what I was actually writing” she snapped as she kicked her bag under
the table.
Draco
nodded in agreement although he did remember a fair bit on what he had written
in his report. Most of it was just conmen sense. “Well look at the bright side,
we’re allowed to re-sit our quizzes” he stated.
“Turn
your tests over and begin” McGonagall called.
There
was a rustle as everyone turned their papers over and then silence.
Looking
down at the questions, Draco scanned through each other. There were thirty
questions, some were questions that required a paragraph in answer and some
were just multiple questions which he personally found easier.
Resting
his head in his hand he began to answer them as best he could.
Minutes
past, and it was about twenty minutes later that Draco was finally satisfied
with his answers and put down his quill and turned his paper over. It wasn’t
too difficult, they were all questions that seemed to require a bit of common
sense than three days of study.
Sitting
back he scanned over the room. There were about five people that had finished,
leaving around fifteen with their heads still down and frowns on their faces.
Pansy was finished and had been for at least five minutes, Granger was finished
and had been for also about five minutes, Potter seemed to just finish as his
eyes swept over him, Cho
also seemed to have finished a few minutes ago as well as another Ravenclaw
that he wasn’t familiar with.
Turning
back to the front, Draco frowned.
Potter’s proposal. Obviously it seemed that the smartest and
most productive reply would be to accept his proposal and give things a go… But
then there was that small part of him that wanted to turn Potter down, the same
way he turned him down seven years ago, but he knew he was just being immature.
But
why did Potter want to suddenly patch things up?
Risking
another look over to the brunette, Draco saw that he had made himself
comfortable with his head resting on his folded arms. Granger was next to him,
looking over her paper… He wouldn’t put it past her to have been the one to
suggest the proposal to Potter; it wouldn’t surprise him at all.
Maybe
he should just accept the proposal and see how things went; he only had eight
months left of school, so what could the harm be of spending those eight months
studying and not worrying about throwing a nasty comment? The plus side would the that he’d finally get his childhood dream – to be
friends with the Great Harry Potter.
Though
that dream wasn’t really so vibrant anymore, it was still there… Potter was
someone he was interested in getting to know, and if all he had to do was take
the teens proposal… than where was the down side there…. Unless of course there
was some kind of catch that Potter wasn’t telling him.
“Quills down!”
oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
“I
think you should take it” Pansy stated with a nod at lunch.
Draco
sighed and looked down at his food. “I think I should too…” he murmured as he
pocked the food around on his plate.
“Then
why are you asking for my advice, go and tell him that you accept his proposal”
Pansy stated with a shake of her head as she forked more food into her mouth.
“He obviously wants to patch things up, and I know you would to, so it’s a
proposal that will benefit the both of you”.
Once
again Draco nodded as he looked up and over towards the Gryffindor idea of the
table, he was shocked when his gaze met forest green eyes. Potter was looking
at him. Draco quickly pulled his gaze away and looked back to his plate. “I’ll
take the proposal then… I’ll tell him when I bump into him next” he stated.
“Are
you sure it’s not some kind of trap? Like a prank or something to make you look
like a fool?” Blaise suddenly asked sitting in front of Draco.
Looking
up from his food, the blonde shook his head. “It looked genuine enough… I don’t
think it’s a prank or anything, and if it is, Potter will regret pulling it.”
“Well
then, lets announce the good news to Potter” Pansy suddenly said as she stood
from the table and grabbed her back pack.
Looking
up and the Slytherin glanced towards the door and saw the trio leaving. “I am not going to chace him, Pansy. I’ll tell
him when we bump into each other” he stated as he also stood.
“Oh
come on, I’ll tell him if you want to” shaking her head she stalked towards the
doorway, Draco hot on her tale, his face heating up.
He
was not comfortable with this.
“Potter!” Pansy called, making Draco look up startled. In
front of them only a few feet away the trio stopped as well and looked over
their shoulders.
Draco
fought back a blush as Potter looked to him and then to Pansy. “Yes?” he asked
as he turned around to face her fully.
Pansy
smiled. “I’m here to deliver a message from Draco. He says that he’ll accept
your proposal, and if he finds out that it’s some kind of prank you’ll wish you
were never born” she stated making Draco fail in hiding his blush.
That
girl!
“I
could have said that myself” he snapped before turning his attention to a
smiling Potter. “I may be accepting your proposal Potter, but that does not
mean I’m about to be all buddy with you” he threatened as he glared at him and
then Pansy. Then with Blaise at his side he stalked past the three and made his
way down the corridor.
“I
can’t believe that girl sometimes, she really likes to poke her nose where she
isn’t wanted nor needed” he complained to his silent friend.
“Malfoy!”
Looking
over his shoulder, Draco held back a groan as he saw Potter approaching him. “What!?” He snapped.
His
rudeness didn’t seem to wipe the small smile off Potter’s lips. “I just wanted
to say thank you” he said.
“Whatever”
he went to turn away and leave but his upper arm was caught and he was forced
to look over his shoulder to the annoying Gryffindor.
“Also,
I wanted to ask you if you wanted to meet me in the library tomorrow?”
He asked.
Draco’s
brows raised. “Why?” he asked suspiciously.
Potter
chuckled. “Because I would like to follow through on my
proposal. You agreeing to it is just one step.
The idea wasn’t for you to just agree and that be the
end of it. I want to seriously get to know you, and so I want to ask you to
meet me in the library tomorrow for study” he stated simply.
Draco
rolled his eyes. “Trust a Gryffindor to want to become chums through studying”
he murmured before he tugged his arm free. “Fine Potter, Eleven O’clock, don’t
be late” and with that he turned on his heels once again and resumed walking
towards potions.
He
was safe in this class. Potter was in a lower Potions level then him, so he
didn’t have to worry about seeing the teen until said time the next day… unless
of course he saw the teen at breakfast or between classes the next day.
Entering
the classroom he made his way towards his seat and pulled out his books and
quills, getting ready for the class that wasn’t to start for another five
minutes or more.
When
he pulled out both his textbooks for the lesson he also pulled out his ‘find a
word’ deciding to spend some time on it until Snape arrived. Opening the book
to the find a word he was up to, he looked down the list and saw that the next
word on the list was ‘Proposal’.
Scanning
the page, Draco squinted his eyes, his quill moving with his gave, stopping on
every ‘P’ he came across, it took him less then ten seconds to spot the word
moving diagonally down the paper, circling it with a grin and crossing it off
the paper he sat back, that wasn’t so hard.
“Silence!” Snape demanded as he walked into the room, a
glare reserved for each student, “Begin taking notes…”
Draco
quickly tucked his find a word away and grabbed a spare parchment.
Tomorrow
was promising to be an interesting day. With Potter’s proposal for a study
get-together, Draco wasn’t sure what the day would bring him, but he was
interested to find out.
“Granger,
hand down! I haven’t even asked the question!!”
