Prologue: Evil on its Feet Again
November 19th,
2003
Lucius stretched his arms out and
then up over his head, enjoying the flex and ripple of his muscles. He closed his eyes and loosed a pleased
sigh. He continued stretching each limb,
counting the smooth steps he could take and curling and uncurling his fingers.
“How does it feel to have complete
control over you body again,” Bellatrix asked from beside him. Rodolphus and Rabastan were sitting behind her.
“Quite wonderful,” Lucius purred. “It took long enough for the worthless healer
to do his job.”
Rabastan
snorted from his chair. “You were
crushed, Lucius. What did you expect the
man to do, work a miracle? You’re lucky
that it only too this long.”
Lucius turned an icy glare on the
wizard and stalked towards him. “Easy
for you to say when you weren’t the one trapped in a bed for nearly six years
watching the rest of you do nothing to avenge our lord!”
“We’ve been rebuilding,” Bellatrix
hissed. “There were too few of us left
after the final battle to accomplish anything of worth. We’ve been working to find supporters, but we
have to be careful.”
“Careful,” Lucius chirruped mockingly. “When have you ever been careful, Bella? When have you ever been able to control
yourself enough to be subtle?”
“Leave her be,” Rodolphus
said coolly. “The four of us need to
keep our heads calm.”
Lucius sneered and turned
away. “I want that little bitch
found. I want her brought to me then I’m
going break her. I’m going to feel her
writhe and bleed beneath me. The last
words that ever come out of her mouth right before snap her pretty neck will
pleas for her life and the lives of her brother and lovers.”
The
others were silent behind him. He paced
about the room, relishing this new freedom of movement. Six years trapped in a bed made a person
quite thankful for functioning limbs. It
didn’t, however, do much for their state of mind. Lucius was focused on one thing these days:
finding Eris Potter. The others wanted
to focus their efforts on acquiring Harry Potter and using him to resurrect the
Dark Lord, but he knew that was impossible.
They were wasting their time now that the Horcruxes
were destroyed. There would be no Dark
Lord, but there would be vengeance. It
was only a matter of time.

Rabastan
stared at Lucius’ back for a few moments before standing up and stalking from
the room. The man became more unbearable
with every passing month. He’d hoped
that once Lucius was healed he’d calm down a bit. The head of the Malfoy family had always been
a composed man, cool and aloof, someone that Rabastan
had once looked up to, but things were falling apart now.
Even after six years there were
only eight fully fledged Death Eaters living together here in hiding and no
more than twenty supporters scattered about England, France, and various parts
of Eastern Europe. It was ridiculous and
pathetic. With the way all of them
bickered amongst themselves, Rabastan was beginning
to think that he’d be better off on his own.
He’d regret leaving his brother behind, but the man had made his bed
years ago when he’d married that crazy bitch of a Black.
It was
all just one big mess. They’d lost the
war and getting revenge against one young man wasn’t going to do them any
good. Besides, if Potter was strong
enough to defeat the Dark Lord could any one of them actually take him
down?
Rabastan
walked into his room and locked the door.
He walked over to his dresser and pulled out a small, leather notebook. It was a potions workbook he’d come across in
the aftermath of the final battle, a remnant of Eris Potter’s time serving the
Dark Lord. He didn’t really know why
he’d kept it a secret from the others.
Several of the potions were far beyond his abilities, but there were a
few that were within his grasp. He
recognized their use from the ingredients even though he had a hard time
reading the girl’s chicken scratches.
There was one in particular that he was quite interested in at this
point. It was marked with the title of Metamorph Base. He
wasn’t a genius at potions or life, but he knew enough to know that this potion
was his ticket out of the hell Lucius Malfoy was lighting up around him.

December 1st, 2003
Harry hurried towards the head
table in the Great Hall of Hogwarts. These days it was his responsibility, as the
Deputy Headmaster/Headmaster-in-training to set a good example for everyone in sight. It was more than a little stressful on the
best days. He took his usual seat
between Minerva and Draco, waved at Hermione, Roslyn, and Remus, and gave
Charlie a quick nod. It took him a
minute, but he soon realized that Ron had joined Hermione for breakfast today,
something that didn’t happen on a regular basis with his busy schedule with the
Cannons.
His friend waved at him. “Bit out of it today, Harry?”
Harry smiled. “Just busy, as usual. Did you get the day off from training then?”
“The boss gave everyone the day off while he
works on a special negotiation,” Ron said with a lopsided grin.
Harry frowned. “What’s going on?”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Oh, Ron, just spit it out! Harry, do you remember me telling you that
Viktor was retiring from the Bulgarian national team?”
Harry nodded. “Yeah, he finished up his last season this
past summer.”
“Yes,” Hermione said with a smile. “Well, he didn’t want to just sit around so
he went back to Durmstrang to teach.”
“Come on, ‘Mione,” Ron
said with roll of his eyes. “Harry
doesn’t care about all that! Listen,
Harry, Krum talked his old coach into agreeing to an exhibition match at Durmstrang. He also
arranged for the Cannons to be the second team.
We’re going to be playing them the last day before Christmas holiday
start.”
“That should be great for the kids at Durmstrang,” Harry said with a smile. “We should think about arranging something
like that for later in the year.”
“Anyway, Harry, I was wondering if you, Draco,
and James would like to come along,” Ron said excitedly. “Krum said he’d love for the two of you to
put on a Seeker exhibition before or after the match.”
Harry offered his friend an
apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, Ron, but Draco and I are going to be pretty busy with
getting the kids ready to head home.”
Draco piped up then. “It shouldn’t be a problem for James to go
along with you, mate. He’d behave
himself and I’m sure Viktor would keep an eye on him if we ask. Er…he’s not
actually going to be playing, right?”
Ron shook his head. “Nah, he said that the new Seeker needs this
chance at some practice. This will be
great though! I’m sure James will have a
good time.”
Hermione made a slight growling
sound. “The boy is only four years
old! He could be quite the handful for
poor Viktor.”
“Oh, ‘Mione, you
don’t need to worry about old Vicky,” Ron whined. “You know he can handle kids. He’s teaching now for Merlin’s sake!”
Harry considered all this for a
few moments. “Draco can firecall Viktor this evening and see if he’ll be okay with
James coming along. If he doesn’t think
he can handle him then I’ll ask Maggie, but she might be busy.”
Maggie Arlens
was the Cannons’ assistant coach and James was crazy about her.
Ron perked up. “That might be a plan, but she might not be
coming along. I still wish you could
come, Harry. You’d have a good time. I’ve heard that the staff is pretty young and
there’s going to be a little Christmas party after all the kids leave.”
“I’m sure you’ll have fun with Viktor,
Ronald,” Hermione said stiffly.
“Oh, ‘Mione, you
already turned me down,” Ron said with another roll of his eyes. “You don’t Quidditch
anyway.”
Hermione just sighed and left the
table. Harry shook his head and asked
quietly, “When are you just going to hurry up and marry the woman, Ron? She’s not going to wait around forever.”
Ron smiled sadly. “I know, mate, but I just need to make sure
that I’m well settled. I’m doing well
with the team now and this is looking to be a great season. If we place high enough in the finals the
whole team will get a pay raise. That’s
when I plan on asking her.”
“Forgive me for having my doubts, Ron,” Draco
said with a chuckle. “You’ve been
planning on it for a few years now.”
Ron laughed. “Yeah, but I’ve got the ring and
everything. That little cottage I got is
nearly fixed up and paid off. You just
wait and see.”
Harry took his last sip of tea and
stood. “Don’t worry, mate. I believe you.”
He walked off then to hunt down
his son and the school’s daycare center.
It was an addition that was made for the personal baby boom that Hogwarts had experienced over the past few years. It currently had four full time residents
with a fifth on the way. The oldest was
James, with Jacqueline Lupin being just a month younger than him. Jackie’s little brother Marcus was next in
line and Bianca, Ginny and Blaise’s
daughter was currently the youngest at age two.
Number five would be arriving before the month was out as Ginny and
Blaise were expecting another little girl.
Harry thought all the little ones were heaven and Minerva said that was
exactly what would make him a great headmaster. He hoped every day that Eris would arrive
with two more additions for Madam Hendrix, the school nanny, to care for.
He smiled when he came to the
entrance to the day care. He could only
imagine how excited James was going to be right up until he got to go to the
exhibition game. It would probably prove
to be quite the interesting day for his son.
