Accelero Temporis
Hermione put the finishing touches on
her Accelero Temporis potion with the additon of three dried
flobberworms and a counterclockwise stir. The unappealingly dark and
viscous potion slowly became a pale green as the class ended.
Hermione let a sigh of relief escape her tired lips. The Time-Turner
that made her aggressive schedule possible left her with little extra
energy. Though she had decided one year with the Time-Turner was enough
after her third year, she had forgotten how exhausting it had been by
the start of her seventh year and had asked Professor Dumbledore to
allow her another year of extra lessons. This would allow her the
time to take on a special project as well, and if she decided to make
it a potions project, she might need the extra time to convince
Professor Snape to help her with it.
“Your preparation time has come
to an end. Do begin cleaning up after yourselves and disposing of
your failed attempts.” Professor Snape spoke with his usual
severity, irritation with his students' shortcomings unconcealed.
Unable to control her indignation,
Hermione's arm shot up into the air. Beside her, Ron groaned and
looked helplessly at Harry. Sardonically, Snape's right eyebrow
rose, illustrating his annoyance (or could it possibly be amusement?)
at her unabated determination.
“Have you something to add, Miss
Granger?” His smooth voice toyed with her, not disguising the
dangerous current beneath his words.
“Sir, you did not say what to do
with successful potions; should I bottle some of mine to turn in?”
“No, Miss Granger, you should
not. But perhaps you would care to demonstrate the effects of your
potion for the rest of the class.”
“But Sir-”
“Where is your usual confidence
in your work, Miss Granger?” His voice purred.
“I know my potion is correct,
Sir, but...” Snape swept silently across the room to stand
imposingly over her chair. Dismissing the remainder of the class, he
took 25 points from Gryffindor and then requested-demanded- that
Hermione stay to talk with him.
“And what, Miss Granger, is the
meaning of your refusal to obey my instructions?”
“I- I can't tell you...”
Hermione's usually quick brain could think of nothing but the fact
that she was allowed to tell him nothing of the Time-Turner. She
experienced a momentary desire for Slytherin cunning before her
attention was once again diverted.
“As your teacher, I deserve an
explanation- so let us have it.”
“ But Professor Dumbledore
said-” Hermione broke off her sentence, wondering if she had
said too much.
Professor Snape arched his eyebrow.
“You will not refuse my request Ms. Granger.”
Quailing beneath the professor's acrid
gaze, Hermione carefully measured out a test tube of her potion and
downed it.
With a quick flick of his wand,
Professor Snape banished the remainder of her potion. “That
will be all, Ms. Granger.” As the potion spread throughout her
body, the sound of his voice dropped. Realizing that she would find
it hard to interact with those around her for the duration of the
time it took the potion to wear off, Hermione grabbed her books and
hurried out of the room. To say that she was angry would be an
understatement. As she spun around the corner, escaping his baleful
stare, she pulled the Time-Turner out of her robes and stopped to
think. What effect would the potion have if she tried to use the
Time-Turner? Could she go back to before she took it? Probably not.
Probably not safe to use it at all. After all, if she was operating
within a different perception of time, who was to say whether the
Turner would effect her own time perception or the perception of the
rest of the world. Even her sharp intellect grew confused when
trying to anticipate the possibilities. Arithmancy will just have to
wait until tomorrow, she decided, with only a small pang of guilt.
Did she want to just return to her rooms? Or perhaps Madame Pomfrey
could help her? Researching antidotes might prove useful. “Moste
Potent Potions it is,” she decided. Hermione set out for the
library.
*****
Hermione was glad to have
avoided meeting anyone on her way to the library. She was safely
secreted behind the stacks, books spread around her and the
Time-Turner held idly between two fingers as she thought. She was not
prepared for the low, silky voice demanding to know what she was
doing out after curfew. She had not been aware that so much time had
passed. When she didn't reply, the voice's owner stepped closer,
reaching out to wrap his fingers around the Time-Turner that peeked
out from between her fingers.
“Perhaps, Ms.
Granger, you are aware that possession of a Time-Turner by a minor is
strictly monitored and controlled. You would not have acquired one
illegally, I don't think. So tell me, what need could you possibly
have that would cause you to be entitled to its use?”
Hermione's startled gasp
did little to answer his question. She did not get a chance to answer
before a large book fell from a shelf high above them, knocking
Professor Snape from his feet and causing the Time-Turner to flip
over. A blurring of colors met their startled eyes and a strange
pull startled their stomachs. The sensations disappeared, leaving
the two on the floor of the Hogwarts library. The wall composed of
piles of books that had surrounded Hermione were gone.
