Making pancakes
for breakfast, the Sunday morning before Hermione would be going back to
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Elizabeth Granger was singing
quietly to herself as she finished the pancakes and started the eggs. A cool
breeze came out of nowhere and then suddenly, she was surrounded by horrible
looking creatures that were as foul smelling as they were ugly.
When the
creatures parted slightly, she was able to see a horrid looking man with red
snake-like eyes and evil permeating his every pore. With one flick of his wand,
she was floating toward him at an alarming rate and she could no longer scream
due to the silencing spell he cast moments before.
Seeing that she
wasn't going to live through this ordeal, she threw her arm out at the last
second and knocked over a large vase at the entrance to the dining room.
Hearing the shattering glass, the evil being before her, glared menacingly at
her before chanting something she couldn't hear. Suddenly, she could no longer
breathe and as she breathed her last breath, she saw her husband Daniel, come
charging into the room with a pistol in hand, before everything went black.
Hermione lay in
her room reading, her favorite book, ‘Hogwarts, A History,’ when suddenly, she heard shouting and the sound of shattering
glass. She ran downstairs to find out
what all the fuss was about, only to see Voldemort and several Death Eaters in
her house. Voldemort had his wand pointed at her father, who was crouched
beside her mother’s body, pointing a gun at Voldemort. It was obvious that her mother had just been
killed. She looked at the evil wizard and saw a bullet wound in his wand arm
that had done nothing to slow him down, and then glanced back to her mother. “MUM!”
Hermione screamed. Her father turned to
see his daughter on the steps, crying.
“Good-bye. I love you,” he
whispered, before Voldemort yelled the words of the Unforgivable killing curse,
“Avada Kedavra,” killing
him instantly. Turning to find Hermione standing there, Voldemort grinned
evilly, and raised his wand to curse her as well, but instead of killing her,
he decided to curse her instead.
Starting at the
sound of people talking and laughing while they walked onto the property, he
yelled “Go back!” at his Death Eaters, and triggering a ring on his finger, Portkeyed away, leaving Hermione to cry over her parents’
motionless bodies. Remus Lupin and Kingsley Shacklebolt
entered the house, with their brooms in their hands, and wands at the ready, only
to see Hermione, between her parents’ lifeless bodies, crying pitifully on the
floor.
Remus ran to
Hermione and gathered her shaking form in his arms. Taking a cassette out of
the pocket of his robes, he turned it into a portkey
and immediately transported Hermione and himself
to Grimmauld Place,
where he yelled for Harry just after arriving at their destination, while Shacklebolt searched Hermione’s house, looking for more
intruders. Once convinced there were no others in the house, he bent toward
Hermione’s parents and turned on his own portkey (a
dead battery) to take them to St. Mungo’s, the local
hospital in the Wizarding World.
Jerking suddenly,
at hearing the sharp yell permeating the air, Harry jumped to his feet and
immediately started running down the long hall to get to the kitchen, where it
had come from. Coming to an abrupt stop at what lay before him, he cautiously
asked, “What happened?” panicking slightly, when his gaze fell upon Hermione's body,
trembling from the force of her sobs.
“Parents…Voldemort…attacked…dead…” Hermione whispered, drying her eyes
hiccupping and sniffing slightly.
Harry walked over
to Hermione and tried to console her.
“There, there…it’ll be ok…shhhh…Remus, what
happened? Obviously she’s upset, but I
couldn’t really understand what she was saying.
I caught something about Voldemort, but that was it.” He patted her on top of her head, the way you
would pat a dog’s, trying desperately to console her the only way he knew how. “Her parents are dead,” Remus said bluntly. “Kingsley and I went to her house as per your
request. When we arrived, Voldemort and
his Death Eaters were casting the Dark Mark over her house and running away. We found
Hermione in the common room, crying over her parents’ bodies.”
With a horrified
look on his face, Harry turned to Hermione and reached for her shaking body.
Turning towards the common room, and leaving Remus standing alone in the
kitchen, he gently carried Hermione toward the nearest chaise and sat down with
her in his lap. Rocking
her gently, he whispered comfortingly as she began to drift asleep just as Ron
entered the room.
“Bloody Hell, Harry!
What happened? Is Hermione
ok? Why is she crying? If somebody hurt her, I swear to Merlin…” Glancing from Harry to Hermione, Ron
nervously started pacing the floor, waiting impatiently for an explanation,
slamming his fist into his other hand and muttering curses under his breath.
Once Harry had
carefully situated Hermione, so that she was comfortable and she would wake up
to see friendly faces, he turned to Ron, looking grim. “Ron! Calm down!
Hermione is fine, but something...bad happened. I think it would be best if she told you
herself when she wakes up.” Harry spoke softly,
as not to wake Hermione. “Ok, I’ll ask her when she’s awake, but can you at
least give me an idea of what happened?”
“Voldemort happened,” whispered Harry.
Looking
speechless, for the first time in his life, Ron’s face had gone white and he
looked extremely worried. Gnawing on his lower lip in frustration and anxiety,
he started tugging at his fire-red hair in agitation and worry over his
long-time friend. Pacing back and forth in the common room, he couldn’t help
growling in the back of his throat at the thought of Voldemort touching
Hermione in any way. Continuing his pacing, he couldn’t help glancing toward
Hermione. His sense of protection for the girl was overwhelming and he couldn’t
help it when he walked over to hold her hand and gently stroke her hair.
Ron was deep in
thought while absentmindedly stroking Hermione’s hair. He honestly didn’t know
what had happened, but he could only imagine it had been horrible; nothing
short of that would be the work of Voldemort and whatever it was, had left
Hermione terribly shaken. He silently hoped and prayed that the girl he had
loved for years would be alright.
Harry tried to
think of anything other than what had happened to her, but his mind would not
let him. Part of him hoped that she would wake up and be the constantly
cheerful girl that was so full of life, but the more rational part of him, knew
better. Minutes seemed to drag like hours as they waited, as patiently as
possible, for Hermione to wake, with Remus only coming in once to check on
them, and then leaving the kids to their own devices.
Hermione woke to
the feel of someone stroking her hair softly. Smiling gently, she turned
slightly on the chaise so that she could face whoever was sending delicious
shivers down her spine. Noticing it was Ron wasn't as unsettling as the
horrified expression on his face. Suddenly, flashbacks of everything that
happened assaulted her mind and she cried out from the shear force of it. “Hermione,
it's alright! You're safe now,” Harry
said, soothingly; as Ron forcefully wrapped her in his arms, lightly stroking
her back, desperately trying to take her pain away. “But...my
parents...and...Oh, Merlin! What am I
going to do now?” Hermione started
panicking. Rocking back and forth, Ron whispered soft comforting words into her
ear to try and soothe her enough that she could
speak to them. Now more than ever, he needed to know what happened, to shock
her to the core. Suddenly realizing what she had just said, and remembering
what Harry had told him earlier, his eyes grew
large and he couldn’t help the gasp that tore from his throat.
Seeing the
shocked look in his eyes and knowing what he just realized, Hermione couldn’t
take the pitying look he gave her moments later and ran up the stairs to get
away from those eyes, with all her might. Watching her go, Ron couldn’t help
feeling guilty about what he had done. He couldn’t help it though! He didn’t
know what he would do if he lost his entire family! He would go insane, or
worse! He couldn’t help but pity her, under the same circumstances, he would
expect the same. Accepting this as truth, he turned to Harry and spoke with a
conviction he rarely showed. “Harry, she has to stay with us. We are the only family she has left, even if
we aren't blood relatives.” Harry looked
at him quizzically. “But if we aren't
blood related, then we aren't family.”
“That is merely a
technicality, Harry. We are family in all but name.” At Harry’s stupefied look,
he took a breath. “Ok. You live with the Dursley's, who treat you
like shite, so I’m not surprised that you don’t know what a family is.” Harry sat down on the nearest chair and
waited for enlightenment. “A family is a
group of people who love you and take care of you, people who you can trust,
and people who will give their lives to protect you. You and I and my family are the only people
left to take care of her, and I know that my parents consider her to be their
second daughter, so we are her family now.”
Following Ron's speech, with him looking in Harry's eyes to make sure he
understood, and a very manly hug which "never happened," the two boys
went upstairs to try and comfort Hermione.
