It all
started during the summer of her sixth year, Hermione Granger had just finished
the ride home on the Hogwarts express. She waved goodbye to Harry Potter
ruffling his black hair before he stalked off to his relatives on the other
side of the platform. She watched as he left before turning her attention to
her boyfriend.
Hermione gave a kiss to the red
head that stood near her, before turning to head out into the muggle world,
through Platform 9 &3/4’s and to her awaiting parents, when a loud explosion
set her on her ass.
“What the
hell?” She shouted louder than she had intended,
wizards and witches racing towards the smoke filtering in from the muggle
realm.
“Mione? You ok?” Ron asked with fear in his eyes.
“I’m fine
Ron, what the hell was that?”
“I dunno let’s go find out.”
She suddenly wished that Ron wasn’t her only friend at her side, she
always felt safer with both Harry and Ron there with her.
As they
crossed the barrier they saw what was left of the muggle train station.. Not bloody much.
Smoke filled the area and she saw her mother’s purse, it was the same
purse she’d carried for close to fifteen years, how it stayed together this
long had to be a magic of it’s own making. Her mother was no where to be found, but a
bad feeling seeped it’s way into the pit of her
stomach.
“Ron… this is my mother’s hand
bag…” She then looked around more
closely and saw something even more disturbing, she saw a hand, a severed hand…
a left hand, and the wedding ring on the finger looked so much like her
father’s ring that she screamed.
She
screamed for what seemed like an eternity and then suddenly she stopped, it as
if she had no will left, she started to slump into a faint, but Ron caught her
at the last possible minute and held onto her, keeping her from hitting the
concrete. “Mione, we’ll figure this out,
ok. I promise you that,
come with me, Mum and dad will figure it out, we have to get you back into our
world now.” Ron acted on instinct
pulling her through the ward that separated the two worlds, and then a horrible
realization hit him… Harry.
Harry had
just disappeared through the barrier to his awful Aunt and Uncle,
he might be hurt as well. He could be.. He could be… No
he’d know, or at least someone would.
Professor Dumbledore would know.
Then the memory returned, Dumbledore doesn’t know anything anymore, he’s.. dead.
“Ron… Ron.. Son, we’ve got to get you both home..
and now. Tonks
here will designate a portkey out of this old
crumpled piece of advertisement, I’ll go to privet Drive and see if I can
locate Harry, I’m afraid that our time tables, and Voldemort’s have been sorely
driven apart. Get her home to the Burrow;
I’m hoping that her parent’s weren’t here.” Arthur Weasley told his son, but
Ron wouldn’t move.
“Dad, that’s
her mum’s handbag she’s clutching, and there’s a hand… and she started to
scream.. I think it might have been her father… Dad
Mione’s got no one left!” Ron started to panic.
“Ron snap out of it, she’s got us, and that’s more than I can say
for Harry at the moment, I have to locate him at all costs.”
…
Severus
Snape, snarky potion master, and spy extraordinaire, was currently in a bind
himself, being bound and gagged, and hung over a very angry Dark Lord. “You never said anything concerning this arrangement
to Dumbledore did you? Severus? No of
course you didn’t… But you didn’t aid in the matter either, no of course
not. Because of your insolence I only
managed to kill that mudblood Granger’s parents. I might have managed the potter brat’s family
too had I known a bit more about the workings of the platform now and not as it
was fifty some odd years ago. But no…
nothing of the sort Severus, this is all your fault! Legimens!”
The dark lord surfed through
Severus’ memories, and saw only Severus readily accepting information on the
order, never offering more than what Voldemort had him tell that muttering old
coot Dumbledore, He saw Severus cast the killing curse, thus ridding him of the
only wizard he’d ever fathomed to be afraid of.
He also saw the hate the man felt
for the potter brat. He shouldn’t
continue to torture
his valued servant, but he was so damn angry that his plans seemed to awry yet
again.
He stripped the potion master’s
flesh with a single flick of his wand, blood running down his back at an
alarming rate. “This will never do. Wormtail remove the gag.” Wormtail raced to the bound man and removed
his gag.
“Now Severus what do you have to
say for yourself? How will you make
yourself more indispensable...” Voldemort cast the curse
again stripping another line of flesh from his already beaten form.
“I am so
very sorry my lord, please forgive me, if I had any idea what would transpire,
I would have quickly acted to rectify the situation. I gave my life to you my lord, you may do
with it as you wish..” He bowed his head in shame,
knowing that the worst was yet to come.
“Severus,
you are still as of yet very valuable to me, and I must allow you to live,
otherwise I’d strip every ounce of flesh from your bones, but only because you
are the only potion master in the world that can do what I bid, I must allow
you a reprieve. However, if you ever
disappoint me again, especially of this magnitude I will be forced to render
you completely useless, aside from your very apt brain. Crucio.” He said the last word, the curse, with as
much venom as he could muster, before releasing the man a second later. He had only wanted to allow him to feel his
wrath in preparation for the next let down.
“You may
heal him now Wormtail, but not fully, I want him to remember what transpired
today. Then he can
apparate away from my sight. You will do
well to remember what you learned today Severus, I can suffer no more
disappointments from you. The next time
I call you better have more poignant information.” Wormtail poured a potion
over his form that gave him enough strength to apparate from Voldemort’s
stronghold.

“All right
Ron, what I need you to do is hold onto Hermione very, very tightly. Then with your free hand grasp the parchment
and take her to the burrow. This is very
important, ok?” Ron nodded numbly, his
life was in shambles, even with the girl of his dreams in his arms… suddenly he
felt sick, and promptly evacuated the contents of his stomach on Tonks’
shoes. “Oh, thanks... That’s much
better.” She muttered to herself as she
apparated to the burrow to wait for the teens.
“Ok, I can
do this.. I can.. I know I
can.” Ron muttered to himself as he held onto the girl with all his might and
grasped the parchment tightly, letting go of the parchment just in time to land
softly on his arse, but keeping Hermione from getting hurt. “Do these landing ever get any easier?”
“Sure, but
once you can apparate, you won’t need to have them be easier...” Tonks said as
she helped the young boy carry, the still unconscious form of Hermione into the
burrow.
He watched
the witch incredulously, he knew that being an auror had hardened her against
attacks, but the purple spiky haired witch didn’t seem to mind that Hermione’s
parents, and possibly Harry as well had been blown up in some kind of insane
explosion. Suddenly all the venom and
bile that the afternoon had caused rose from the pit of his stomach and he
exploded.
“How can
you be so bloody calm Tonks? We just
lost the Granger’s, and we.. we
might have.. we might have lost HARRY!” She looked at him wide eyed.
“Ron calm
down sweet heart, I’m not calm, not calm at all. I just know that I have to get you home and
back out there once I know you’ll be ok, Or once your mum get’s
back here. It’s chaos out there, and
there is nothing we can do because it’s in the muggle realm. Your father will know if Harry is ok, I
promise.” She turned as the door to the
kitchen creaked opened. It was Severus.
“SNAPE!” Ron bellowed his wand out. “I’ll kill you, you ruddy turncoat, you
traitor!” Waves of anger could almost be
seen to ripple across the air; Ron’s face turned the color of his fiery red
hair.
“Ron! NO!”
Tonks said as she helped the broken wizard to a chair. “It’s not what you think. Go get me pig; I’ll have to make you
understand.”
“I’m not
going anywhere with the slimy git in my house!” Ron was livid, he was shaking
with the fear and indignity of having the very man who took the wizarding world
and set it on its ear, not even a month ago.
“Ron, I’m
going to be fine, he can’t hurt me at the moment; he can barely sit there
without passing out.” Ron finally gave
in to her request regardless that he wanted to do a killing curse on the
professor instead of letting him in the room with Tonks.
When he
returned to the kitchen he saw Snape being forced to drink a clear potion. Veritaserum. “Good,
now you will get the answers you need, first, I must write an owl to a special
person who will show up momentarily, he will be disillusioned so as not to
attract untoward attention, but Severus has decided it time to come clean with
you.” Tonks wrote a quick note and attached to the tiny bird’s leg before
whispering the name of the person it would fly to.
“Now, Mr.
Weasley, please sit down, so I can have the Professor begin to make you
understand.” Ron sat down, but not
happily, still worried about the fate of the wizarding world, now that the
estranged Professor of Death was seated in front of him. “Severus, can you please tell Mr. Weasley what
transpired the night of Albus’ demise?”
“I’d rather
not, but yes I can. Albus had come to me
earlier in the year and explained of his upcoming demise, he knew that during
one of the destructions of a horcrux he had taken what seemed at the time to be
irreversible damage, and unfortunately he was not able to handle the
ramifications of this action. In
laymen’s terms Mister Weasley, he did not want to live. I am a dealer of death by trade, I have been
forced to kill in many ways and at many times, and I have never liked doing
it. I still do not like doing it, but
when more resounding reasoning’s became clear, the Headmaster asked me to make
sure he did die by my hands and no one else’s.”
The door opened quietly and no one noticed that someone walked into the
room until a throat was cleared.
“But he
couldn’t even do that. He did, however,
an excellent job of making it seem as though I had died.” Albus Dumbledore’s voice cascaded around the
room, and he revealed himself for who he was.
His hand was even back to normal.
“I took a week’s long vacation and got myself some proper help for the
ailment that was troubling me, I still don’t have full use of the injured body
part, but I must say I feel much better.” He smiled at Ron. “I will inform Harry of this turn of events
as soon as he arrives, He is fine by the way, Your father sent me an owl only
moments ago, telling me that he had spent a few minutes at privet drive and
would be back here within the hour. Now
it seems someone needs to enervate Miss Granger, and allow the news of my
apparent ‘not death’ wash over her as well, at least I hope this will be a
welcome sight, where as her earlier experience was not.”
“But
Headmaster, how are you alive? Harry saw Snape—“
“Professor Snape, even though I
don’t see how he will be able to continue teaching as he is a wanted criminal…”
“Still Harry saw him kill you,
heard him say the words… How.. how…”
“I didn’t kill him.” Professor
Snape said as the world began to grow dark.
“I just…mimicked the…spell.” He
took another deep breath and slumped in his chair, the world growing black and
he slept.
“But why not tell us before
Headmaster?”
“Might want to call me Albus, I
won’t be your headmaster this year either, Minerva will be handling that
job. And I couldn’t tell anyone at the
time of the funeral, I had to for all intent and purposes be
dead. Voldemort must never know that I
am alive, and because of that you will be asked to learn to control your
thoughts from a legimens. Professor Snape will be doing that for both
you and Miss Granger this summer at Headquarters. Just in case Voldemort does happen to have
you in his throws, we must not show our hand until the moment that we deem it
necessary. You do understand?”
“Huh?” Ron asked, his mind a mass of
amazement and confusion.
“Ron, just go wake Miss Granger, when
she comes too, try to help her with her parental situation, and wait on Harry
to arrive. I must attend to Severus, and
then I will attend to the three of you…. I need to contact Poppy at once.” He threw a handful of floo powder into the
hearth in the kitchen and contacted the witch, who immediately apparated to the
Burrow. They spent the next two hours
healing the potions master.
