Atop the hill stood Brian and the newest bachelor.
"Just take care of her for me, please," he pleaded.
Draco turned to look at him and saw his eyes were teary. "Hey, I'm not here to marry her. To tell you the truth Brian, I'm not looking to marry anyone. Understand?"
"I do." Brain replied, but he knew better. He knew more than Draco did.
Below them danced a black haired beauty around a tree, humming to herself as if it were perfectly normal.
"Brian, obviously you feel very much for her. If it's come to me, it's obvious her father is desperate to marry her off. I'm sure he would give her to you." Draco suggested.
Brain laughed an unhappy laugh. "Oh, I do love her, but it's not meant to be. Her father may not care for her happiness anymore, but I do." Brian did love her, but he could never love her fully, he knew that. He knew too well.
Draco did not completely understand what was going on around him. Even from the hill he could tell that she was beautiful. How had she chased away so many suitors? She was obviously a bit frivolous, he thought as she continued to slight with the wind. But that certainly was not enough of a reason for so many men to refuse her, especially with the fortune that would come in the form of a dowry. Draco turned to see that Brian was well on his way back to the castle.
He decided to descend the hill. He had come to the habit of refusing the women in person. He was not refusing them because of their faults, and they deserved his respect.
When he reached her she instantly stopped her swaying and held out her hand. He took it gingerly and kissed the back of it. "Miss. Potter."
She smiled and he let go of her hand. However, he hadn't been through the courting process in years and had taken to just going by the seat of his pants. 'I am Draco Malfoy, I am here-"
"You're here to sweep me off my feet, like all the other men." She had interrupted him. That had never happened before. Her expression had changed.
"Well, yes and no." She seemed confused. "I was sent here for a similar purpose, but I'm sorry to tell you that it was never my intended purpose."
"You're rejecting me already. I guess you win for quickest refusal."
"I- No- Yes-" he stammered, he was caught off guard again, she was ruining his speech. "It has nothing to do with you, Miss. The misunderstanding is between our parents, it seems. I am not looking for a wife."
She studied his face critically, and smiled. "Alright," she replied. Then she grabbed his hand, "Come on." She said as she pulled him along.
At this point Draco was thoroughly confused. He had just refused her, and now they were holding hands going only lord knows where. Draco didn't know what to say, so he didn't say anything.
Finally, they made it to the edge of a wood. She leaned against a tree and pointed him to one across from herself. When he stood by it, she seemed to change her mind and sat on a stump. She looked up to him. "I've always dreamed of something like this happening," she said.
"What?" he was starting to think she was insane.
"Well, usually they court and leave. But you've refused me so quickly and personally at that! No one knows yet."
"I told Brain I was going to-"
"Brain wouldn't tell anyone, he wants me happy." She had interrupted him again. "And well. we could make this fun, yes?"
"Fun?"
"Yes, fun. Well... maybe you already have fun but I'm always trapped here on the properties. And it's terribly lonely, I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't so terribly lonely." She was blushing and suddenly wasn't looking at him anymore, but at her elegant boots that somehow had managed to stay mostly clean.
"I don't understand you at all."
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I've just dreamt so much that I'm not completely sure this is even real. You said you weren't looking for a bride, and well nor am I. I mean I'm not looking to get married."
Draco stared at her, surely she was going mad. "A girl of your status would've been married ages ago."
"I know, but- Will you help me?" she was looking at him now, and he noticed the big green eyes staring at him. Beauty. "Help me live, before father marries me off to some poor drunkard."
For the first time in his existence Draco found himself being swayed by a woman's beauty, as he stared into those shimmering green eyes he couldn't refuse her. He nodded and promptly found his arms full of a young Harrietta Potter as she jumped into his arms and nearly knocked him over. Draco was sure he had just signed himself up for a heap of trouble, but wasn't too sure he disliked it as much as he should.
