Lily
Evans sat in silence on the ride home from the train station, trying to ignore
her sister’s various nonverbal taunts.
She was not looking forward to this summer. Both her parents worked for the Home
Secretary’s office, and they had already written her and told her that they
would not be in the country much for the duration of her summer vacation, and
that she would have to find her own way to King’s Cross for her fourth
year. She’d already had a cry knowing that
they’d miss her birthday in mid-July, and also knowing that her sister would be
using this opportunity to make her summer a living hell. As they entered their neighborhood, Privet Drive, Lily
cast her eyes around, searching for something different from the mind-numbing
sameness of it all. Her eyes widened
briefly, noting the “For Sale” sign in the yard of Number 2, their next-door
neighbor. The sign also had a “Sold”
sticker across it. Petunia noticed her
younger sister’s interest and decided to squash it. “It was sold in the middle of last week. Bought by a boy and his
mother. Mother’s a bit
pinched-looking, and has crazy eyes.
Boy’s got eyes kind of like yours, Lils, maybe
a little lighter. He’s also some sort of
strange freak.”
“Now,
Petunia . . .” their mother admonished while Lily perked up slightly in the
back. ‘Freak’ was what Petunia always
called her, maybe he would be someone she knew, and maybe he would be someone
who wasn’t scared of that idiot, James Potter.
“But
it’s true, mother! He doesn’t seem to
want to get to know anyone around here.
I’ve only ever seen him at the library and he’s always in a corner,
reading quietly and avoiding everyone else in the building. This boy started to sound more and more
interesting to Lily, but she wisely kept her mouth shut and her sister’s
attention off herself.

The
next day, Lily sat in her little spot in the park, sulking a bit. Her parents had left early in the morning,
and her sister had wasted no time to begin tormenting her. Petunia had woken her up at 5:00 in the morning to make
breakfast, knowing that Lily couldn’t do anything to retaliate without getting
in trouble in the magical world. So Lily
sat and sulked in the park, not needing to be home until after sunset. She sighed softly and stared at the small
creek running through the park. She
started slightly as she felt a presence in her little area. She turned abruptly and came face-to-face
with who could only be the “new boy” in town.
She quickly gave him a once-over, her alert
emerald green eyes missing nothing as she took in every aspect of his
appearance. He was a few inches taller
than her 5’2” frame, he was slender but not too
skinny. What she could see of his frame
looked built for speed and agility, in fact, he reminded her of the seekers
that played for the Quidditch teams at school. She noticed that he was cute, with dark
blonde hair that came down to just above his shoulders and piercing, sickly
green eyes that reminded her of something, she just didn’t know what. Abruptly, it came to her. In doing some reading ahead for Defense Against the Dark Arts, she had come across references to
what were termed “The Unforgivables.” They were three curses: the Imperius Curse, the Cruciatus
Curse, and the Killing Curse. The book
she read included pictures that depicted them being fired so the student would
know what they looked like so they could be avoided. The Imperius curse
was a sky-blue jet of light. The Cruciatus Curse looked like a twisty, blood-red
strand. The Killing Curse, though,
looked like a jet of sickly-green light, exactly the shade of the boy’s
eyes. She gasped softly when she made
the connection, then blushed and looked down, thinking that he’d heard her and
thinking that he’d think it was for something else. When she did that, she missed his slight
smirk and frank appraisal of her with his piercing gaze.
Sydney was bored. Because of his father, his mother and he had
moved to this little town called Little Whinging,
and, to be honest, it was boring. He’d
met what appeared to be the up-and-coming town gossip, a girl named Petunia
Evans, and she had regaled him with all these stories about her horrible
sister, but if Petunia was indicative of the standard inhabitants of Little Whinging, then he would suspect that this sister, Lily,
would be more interesting than the lot of them combined. Not two days after the move, he’d discovered
this little out-of-the-way place near the creek in the park, and he came here
when he needed to get away from the gossipy little snits in the town and away
from his mother. Today, however, he’d
entered the area only to find someone else already there. He stopped in surprise when the figure shot
up abruptly and whirled around so fast that he thought she’d been the victim of
one too many pranks. As she was there
first, he made a quick decision to appear as non-threatening as possible, so he
didn’t look anywhere but at her face.
But oh, what a face it was!
Framed by long, crimson hair, he noted pale skin, shining emerald green
eyes, a small nose, and full lips that seemed to naturally form an adorable
pout, she was the best-looking girl he’d ever seen, and he’d not even checked
out her body yet.
He
noticed her eyes roving over his frame, and he had to struggle to suppress both
a grin and a blush. After succeeding at both,
he heard her gasp and watched her blush and look down, and he felt safe
performing a quick once-over of her body.
He didn’t know how old she was, but he guessed she was around his age,
so nearly fourteen. For all that, she
was developing rather well. Her legs
looked slender, yet toned, though he could only see her lower legs because she
wore a skirt. Her shirt didn’t do much
to hide her chest, however, and she was at least a b-cup, and would probably
develop into a respectable C, if not a D.
Her hands were small and dainty, something he liked in a girl.
