Chapter 1
“My name is Ronald Weasley and ten years ago I died. Almost two months after what the papers dubbed ‘the final battle’, life as I knew it, ended. So much has changed since then, and I don’t just mean me dying. Don’t get me wrong, that was a huge change for me, but for the family and friends I left behind my death was just the beginning. Let me explain. At the end of the final battle, all of the Wizarding world celebrated Voldemort’s reign finally coming to an end. But for those of us on the front lines of the battle (members of the Order, the DA, the dozen or so Aurors the Ministry spared) there was nothing much to celebrate. Everyone was glad the war was finally over; this time Voldemort’s death was permanent, but so many good people lost their lives in the process of reaching that goal. As I said before, many lives changed that day, mine included, and not all of the changes were for the better. For one group in particular, nothing would ever be the same again. Let me start at the beginning of our tale.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ten years ago . . .
Looking out over the battle field, formally the quidditch pitch of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry, only one thought was running through Hermione Granger’s head, ‘It’s over, he’s finally dead. The war is finally over.’ All around her on the ground lay the bodies of friends, loved ones and even enemies. Some injured, some dead, some were merely stunned and tied up waiting for the Aurors to take away. So much hate and prejudice led to all this death and destruction.
“I hope that Ron and Harry made it through the battle,” mumbled Hermione, thinking about how they got separated, as a Healer shoved a portkey in her hand. There were dozens of Healers moving from person to person checking the wounded seeing if they needed to go to St Mungo’s or if their injuries were minor enough for Madame Pomfrey to handle. After getting herself reoriented, Hermione realized the Mediwizard had portkeyed her to the infirmary, where Madame Pomfrey was running around tending to those that were sent to her for care.
“We lost so many good people this past year with all the fighting,” Hermione murmured to herself, thinking of all the members of the Order and of the DA who had lost their lives since she graduated from Hogwarts a year ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On another spot on the pitch, similar thoughts were going through two other Order members heads as the brand of evil started to disappear from their left forearms. But the thoughts of the school’s Potions Master were a little different from the thoughts of his godson, Draco. After spending most of his adult life waiting for the end of this war to come, Professor Severus Snape stood in stunned silence. It took a minute for his usually quick mind to catch up with the life altering event that just took place.
Once the initial shock wore off, it was replaced with a great sense of relief washing over him. ‘I’m finally free. Free to live my life the way I want. No more getting summoned to the Dark Lords side in the middle of the night, or torture, or bowing and scraping. No more living with the fear of being discovered as a spy for the Order of Phoenix. No more dark revels, or Death Eater raids to attend, pretending I’m having a good time. He’s gone and I’m still alive. I never thought I would live to see the end of this war.’ Severus Snape looked over the battlefield, seeing the men and women that once called him a friend (till he showed where his true loyalties laid), seeing those who were his students, just this past school year, and quite a few from the year before. Severus grimaced at the sight of so many promising lives cut short, or destroyed, and wishing there could have been more he could have done to turn them away from the paths they had chosen to go down, without giving himself away as a spy.
“Uncle Severus, there’s something wrong with Weasley. The healers can’t Ennervate him, and he can’t be portkeyed. They say he’s in a magically induced coma,” yelled Draco over the shouts of the mediwizards from St. Mungo’s working around them to stabilize the wounded so they could safely be moved.
‘For Hermione’s sake I hope Mr. Weasley will be all right. I do not think she’ll be able to handle it if something were to happen to him right now’ Snape thought grimly. “There’s been too much death today,” he shouted back to Draco. “Come, let’s get him up to Poppy and see if she can be of some help to him.”
“Now that was the most unexpected thing ever, I mean, don’t get me wrong I’ve done quite a bit of growing up between the beginning of my seventh year and the final battle; to get and keep a woman like Hermione Granger I sort of had to. She worked very closely with Snape for two years, the whole two years we were together. For the sake of our relationship I had to accept the fact that she was friends with Professor greasy git and ferret boy. Harry on the other hand, was not at all happy with Hermione’s relationship with the two Slytherins. It was a very sore point between them, though he was happy to find out she was close to Remus, no problem at all with that friendship. Remus was like an older brother or uncle to her; when I wasn’t there for her Remus was.”
“With all the training she did with them Hermione was quick with her wand, which I did not want to be on the receiving end of. But then again, she was always quick the training just made her lethal. She got Snape to train her in basic hand to hand combat, wandless magic, Occlumency, advanced dark arts and their defense. Almost everything she learned from him she tried to teach me, Harry and our fellow DA members so we would be just as ready for battle as she was. With all we learned from Hermione and the experience we got in battle Harry and I would be ahead of our class when we start Auror training in September. With all Hermione was learning from Snape and even the prince of Slytherin, Draco Malfoy, she became a finely honed weapon. I have always said that she was brilliant, a bit scary but brilliant and that description fit even more while we were together. When I finally accepted the fact that Hermione, Snape and Malfoy were close friends I never thought those two would do something kind to help me, I wasn’t exactly on friendly terms with them myself. Cordial yeah I could do that, but friendly no I don’t think so. Now . . .
After having her broken arm taken care of Hermione jumped right in assisting Madame Pomfrey with the wounded being sent to the infirmary. She had to stay busy to keep her mind off the fact that no one had seen Ron yet.
“Madame Pomfrey, we have more incoming wounded. Where do you want me to put them?”
“There’s space on this side dear,” Poppy says quietly pointing to the side she was working on at the moment. “I’m glad you took that course Headmaster Dumbledore asked me to give the Order members on first aid Miss Granger.”
“Yes I am too, but I wish there was more I could do to help. Pettigrew really did a number on Remus with that silver hand of his,” declared Hermione administering medicinal potions, and applying burn salve to Remus before he could lose consciousness again. He finally managed to avenge his fellow Marauders by killing the one they once called friend. Remus faced Wormtail during the battle and killed him for Sirius, James, Lily, Harry, and for himself. The near silence of the infirmary was broken by the door being slammed open. Poppy and Hermione looked up to see Professor Snape and Draco bringing in an unconscious person with flaming red hair and a light dotting of freckles on his nose and cheeks, though they had faded somewhat in the past year.
“What is the meaning of all this?” snapped Madame Pomfrey.
“Oh gods, Ron ” cried Hermione. The red heads’ family, mourning the loss of their recently reconciled son Percy, turned towards her.
“Set him down on this bed here,” stated Madame Pomfrey recovering from her shock first. As soon as Ron’s body touches the pillow, she starts running diagnostic scans with her wand. “Hmm, this is strange -”
“What’s wrong with my baby boy Poppy? He will be alright won’t he? Why?” cried a near hysterical Molly. “I can’t lose another one Arthur. I just can’t,” she wailed into her husbands’ shoulder.
“What’s strange Madame Pomfrey? Is he going to be ok?” asked Bill from next to his mother after cutting Poppy off mid sentence.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with him yet. I’ve never seen a magically induced coma like this. Severus have you ever seen a diagnostic scan come out like this: blank? He still has a pulse, just barely, but that’s it.”
“What is the matter with young Mr. Weasley Poppy?” asked Dumbledore stepping out of the floo to check on the wounded on his way from the Ministry of Magic. After all of the unnecessary death he has seen in the last year he looks all of his one hundred fifty plus years.
“We do not know yet Headmaster. I just did a few diagnostic scans but nothing showed up. He’s alive and has a pulse but the scans show nothing, no outward signs of life or physical damage. I’m not picking up any signs of internal damage either. I just don’t know what is wrong with him, he is not dead but he’s not quite alive either, I’ve never seen a coma like this one.” Poppy said struggling to keep the worry out of her voice in front of Ron’s grieving family and friends, but the Headmaster, Professor Snape, Draco and Hermione heard it.
“Let me try something if I may, Poppy,” Snape said stepping in after a shared look passed between him and those who heard the worry in the frantic mediwitchs’ voice.
“Go right ahead Severus I need to check on my other patients. Excuse me Headmaster, everyone,” murmured Madame Pomfrey before rushing off to check on the others who were injured in battle.
“Lae ver ynak rad ciga mereh. Lae ver ynak rad ciga mereh,” Professor Snape chanted while waving his wand over the prone form of Ron Weasley. Halfway through the repetition of the chant a dark pulsing, pure black aura surrounded Ron. Which was followed by an anguished cry from Mrs Weasley and gasps from almost everyone else around the bed.
“I have never seen an aura look so dark and ominous,” Bill stated horrified and professionally intrigued all at once.
“Yes, you have, we all have, there was one like it today on the battle field,” breathed Hermione. All eyes snapped towards her, three sets looking intrigued a few confused, and two sets were enraged, one blue and one green behind wire rimmed glasses.
“What are you talking about Hermione?” hollered Ginny. “I won’t speak for any one else here but I saw nothing of the of the sort. Now stop wasting our time, you might be smart but you do not know everything. Get over yourself. This is about Ron not you.” By the time Ginny finished talking she was practically screaming and her face was appallingly red.
“That’s enough Miss Weasley,” Professor Dumbledore stated firmly. “If you can’t control yourself you will have to leave the infirmary. Everyone around you is just as worried as you are. There isn’t a person around this bed that does not care about young Mr Weasleys’ condition.”
“Yeah Ginny, ‘Mione is engaged to Ron, she loves him. She’s practically family already,” said Fred, softy.
“I agree, there’s no reason to talk to her that way. She has just as much reason to want to help him as any of us, she loves him just as much as we do. Look, even Snape and Malfoy care right now” said George trying to calm his little sister.
“Miss Granger is actually correct, we have all seen an aura like this. With all the dark magic Voldemort used he was always surrounded by an aura like the one around young Mr Weasley right now. Whatever curse hit him was a very strong one.” stated Dumbledore.
“This is my fault,” said Harry with his voice cracking at the end. When everyone looked at him he explained “During the battle when Hermione got separated from me and Ron, we fought Lucius . The hex was meant for me but Ron pushed me out of the way and it hit him. I’m the one that should be lying in this bed. This is all my fault, I shouldn’t be here. I’ve gotta get out of here,” he called over his shoulder on his way out of the infirmary.
“Harry wait. Where are you going? It’s not your fault.” yelled Ginny following behind him. “I’ll be right back. Harry??”
“Auther, why don’t you, Molly and the boys go get some rest, get cleaned up and have something to eat. If any thing changes with his condition I will have you notified. Everything that can be done to help bring young Mr Weasley back will be done. But right now your family needs to be together. The house elves have made up rooms for all of you. When the two of you are ready I will help with the arrangements for Percy,” Dumbledore said calmly to keep the situation from turning hostile again.
“Thank you Albus,” said Arthur struggling to pry Molly from Ron’s bed side. “Come on Molly, Albus is right we’re no good to Ron if we are exhausted. Fred, George don’t stay up too late alright.”
“It is I who should be thanking all of you. Without you and your family all of these years Auther we would be still fighting Voldemort,” said Dumbledore sincerely. “Charlie please get back to your bed so you don’t worry Poppy any more than she already is. Bill. Draco. When the two of you have eaten and gotten some rest please come to my office tomorrow around noon. The same to you Hermione. Severus, I know you don’t like to be fussed about but please let Poppy check those wounds. I also want you to eat and get some rest my friend you more than deserve it. It has been a long, hectic day and I need the four of you well rested and refreshed to tackle this mystery curse Malfoy Sr used. I want to start researching the cure as soon as possible. Now if you would all excuse me I’m going to go check on Minerva and then retire myself. Poppy will be keeping watch over young Mr Weasley. Good night all,” he said as he walked over to Professor McGonagall’s bed, his blue eyes completely devoid of their usual twinkle.
“I assure you I have no intention of letting Poppy get her hands on me I will retire to my rooms and treat myself,” stated Snape. “Draco there are rooms available for you near Slytherin house. Hermione. May I speak to you before you retire for the evening?”
“Um sure, give me a minute I’ll be right with you.” said Hermione turning back to Ron’s bed and placing a gentle kiss on his forehead. “Good night Ron. I promise I will do everything I can to help you get better,” she whispered softly in his ear. “Alright lead the way Professor.”
