It was the middle of May and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and their lunches, but none as much as Harry, Ron, and Hermione. They were further along in their mission to destroy the horcruxes, and ultimately Voldemort himself, than even they thought possible. The week before, they had found and destroyed the fifth horcrux, which only left Nagini and Voldemort. Professor McGonagall had convinced the trio to return to Hogwarts for their seventh year and Harry had agreed, but with several conditions. The first being that they could leave at anytime they needed and with no explanations. He also wanted to have the opportunity to leave for the weekends (including Ginny), stating that they would need the stress relief on occasion, whereas the other students that returned would not. They were only allowed to go to Grimmuald Place or the Burrow when they didn’t have “missions” to attend to and it was to be kept strictly quiet, but they were happy nonetheless.
The Burrow was recently targeted and almost destroyed, so it became safer for the Weasley’s to stay with Sirius at Grimmuald Place. He was very happy to have the company and Molly was gratefully helping to clean the place thoroughly. She knew Harry felt the attack was his fault, and she didn’t want him to worry about them. The “kids,” however, would be heading back to school tomorrow afternoon, to get ready for classes on Monday since their N.E.W.T. exams were coming up in a two weeks.
The trio had decided that, with the final battle approaching, they should tell everyone of the prophecy and what they had been doing all year. It was time they knew the truth, which is why some of the Order (well, those that Harry trusted without question anyway) were at the lunch/meeting at Grimmuald Place.
They were chatting with friends and family and everyone could tell they were more light hearted then usual. Ron and Emma (his sixth year Ravenclaw girlfriend and a good friend of Ginny‘s) were talking and secretly rubbing each others legs. This was the first time Emma was allowed to leave the school with the trio and she was thrilled. As her relationship and feelings for Ron had grown, she began getting upset by how secretive he was. It almost drove them apart until Harry, who was not going to allow love to be lost on the account of Voldemort again, told her that if she could say the name “Voldemort” he would tell her what she needed to know. She of course had to promise not to tell a soul what was going on and, after only two attempts, said the name unflinchingly! Her and Ron became closer then ever and, even with all the added stress, Ron was happier then anyone had seen him in a long time.
Around the table, Ginny, Harry, and Sirius were laughing at old tales of the Marauders, while Bill was looking lovingly and disgustedly at his wife, Fluer, as she was telling everyone about her latest cravings. She had just found out she was pregnant four months ago and had some of the strangest cravings anyone had ever heard of. Today happened to be potatoes on top of blueberry cobbler.
Farther down the table, Charlie, Fred, George, Arthur and a few Order members were discussing the newest inventions for WWW. Molly (as she was now called by all that were not her children) and Tonks were discussing the “house hold type spells” that Tonks absolutely hated to use. Tonks had been adopted into the family just like Sirius and was starting to have an obvious crush on Kingsley Shaklebolt. She used to fancy herself in love with Remus, but as they dated, they realized they had a definite friendship, but nothing more. Kingsley, on the other hand, could make her shiver just by being around. They had had a few Order missions together, but not many, and she was quite unsure how he felt about her.
Remus and Hermione were sitting beside each other talking and laughing together, which was becoming quite a common occurrence. She had decided that after graduation she really wanted to continue working with the discrimination of magical creatures, such as werewolves and house elves. While doing other research for their missions, Hermione had asked for Remus’ opinions and suggestions, and they began working closely on several ideas and plans. Hermione hadn’t even graduated yet, but in her true fashion, was already working well beyond what was expected of her. Their current conversation, however, was on books and authors.
“Oh please, Remus, you have got to be kidding me,” Hermione said exasperatedly. “You really think Edgar Allan Poe was NOT a vampire? It’s so obvious for crying out loud.”
“Hermione, you can’t always look at a person, or their writings, and immediately tell whether they are, or aren’t something. I would have expected better from you,” Remus replied, grinning over at her.
“Yea, if that was the case, then everyone would think Snape was a vampire as well,” said Harry, which got a chuckle out of Ron and Sirius.
The only Order members who knew about their “missions” were Remus, Sirius, Snape, and McGonagall and they were a huge help so far. Remus and Hermione would spend hours in the library of number 12 (and occasionally Hogwarts), while Harry, Ron, and Sirius would plan strategies and such. Ginny knew what was going on, but wasn’t allowed to help much due to her age. Harry however, made sure to keep her informed and happy, and she got to leave on weekends as well.
While she had been getting a lot of attention at school lately, everyone knew to stay away from Harry’s girl, and so they didn’t have many problems. Harry had finally wizened up during Christmas and begged Ginny to forgive him. He knew he didn’t stand a chance in life without her and now they were inseparable. It wasn’t such a shock to the Weasley’s, but Harry still endured endless teasing and threats from her brothers.
It seemed during their time of researching and such, Remus and Hermione had struck up a great friendship that no one else could understand. It was like they understood each other without words, or words that made no sense to others, made perfect sense to themselves. This conversation however, was making sense to everyone, but no one really cared about authors of certain books and such, the way those two did.
“Ha Ha very funny, Harry,” she said, returning her full attention back to Remus. “Remus, you know as well as I do, that I don’t judge based on looks. His works are very dark and there are inferences if you read closely. I don’t think he’s a muggle and a vampire does seem to fit.”
“Judgmental,” coughed Remus, grinning again. Hermione looked up at him sharply and replied, “arrogant,” in return.
“Bookworm,” Remus chuckled.
“Ouch Remus, that really hurt,” Hermione said, placing a hurt look on her face and holding her hand to her heart. Then she replied, “hypocrit.”
Remus looked at her very seriously and said, “insufferable know it all.” By this time they were starting to get a few looks from the very packed kitchen and a worried look from Harry.
Hermione glared at Remus’ use of Snape’s term, no matter how true, and said in a very calm, controlled voice, but louder then intended, “Werewolf.”
The entire kitchen came to a standstill. Forks stopped on their way to mouths, jaws dropped mid-sentence, and everyone gasped loudly, gaping at Hermione. No one else moved, they couldn’t understand why sweet, caring Hermione would dare say something like that to Remus, even if it were true, knowing how he felt about his “condition”. Then suddenly, Hermione, Remus, and Sirius were roaring in laughter.
Finally, as the laughter subsided, Remus wiped his eyes and said, “you got me there, you win.”
Hermione put a smug look on her face and said “as always. my dear!” and began to finish her dessert.
However, as they looked up, the three were shocked to see everyone staring at them. They were so absorbed in their own conversation that they never noticed the others, including Harry, were wearing looks of utmost horror, and staring straight at Hermione. She glanced around and said, “What?”
“Hermione,” Molly said slowly, “that was rather rude of you dear.”
Finally catching on, Remus grinned. “Not rude at all Molly, very funny actually. I happen to know that Hermione isn’t at all bothered by my condition, and feels comfortable enough with me to be able to say things like that without thinking I’ll become upset or offended. And after my last jab at her, it really was the perfect comeback.”
“Um, ok, sorry about that then,” she replied, still looking worried.
The table then turned back to normal, leaving only Harry to look between his best friend and his father’s best friends and wonder what else was going on as he heard Sirius say, “Excellent Hermione, even James couldn’t have done better!”
When dinner ended, everyone looked over at Harry expectantly. He knew the time had come to tell them what was going on, and what they could all look forward to in the very near future. He just didn’t know who would stand beside him and who would “tuck tail and run.”
He knew he would always have Ron and Hermione though. It really was amazing the way the three were connected. They were more then best friends, more then brothers and sister, it was like they were one person in three bodies. Harry had bravery beyond measure, but was quick to rush off with rash actions. Ron kept them all grounded, especially Harry, and could plan an attack or mission with astonishing precision. He had also, surprisingly, become the medial go to guy of the three. If any were injured, Ron would jump in and tend to them. He had saved both of their lives on occasion. Hermione was more then the brains of the operation however. She had the ability to see a problem, think it through, and tell the boys in such a way that they could plan and implement their ideas. Together, the three were inseparable and made the perfect team. There was no envy or competition, and they took saving each others lives in the same stride as doing homework and attending class.
Everyone looked at Harry expectantly, wondering why he would have asked them there. He slowly stood up and began. “Well, we asked everyone to come because we have something important to share with you. Hermione, Ron, and myself have been doing a lot this year and it’s time to let you in on the details. Well, at least the short version. The prophecy that we tried to save a couple years ago was given to Dumbledore so, he was able to tell me what it said. I know only a few of you know its contents, because it had to be that way, but let me run through it really quickly and then get to the good part,” Harry said, he hated being the center of everyone’s focus and just wished this was over with. As he relayed the entire prophecy, several people gasped, Molly and Ginny started to cry, and others looked to Harry in admiration, not just because of what he was going to face, but also for the way he was handling himself. They were all very proud of the young man to begin with, but that was steadily growing as he continued speaking.
“Now, I’ve had a lot of time to get used to this fact, so let’s skip over most of it. Just know that my scar,” he said pointing to his forehead, “is where he marked me as his equal, which is why I’m a parselmouth and other such weird things. Dumbledore also believed that my unknown power was love. I still don’t understand that part or how it will work, but I’m sure it will come to me, or as usual, to Hermione. Now, the problem was, I couldn’t go off half-cocked the way I normally do and try to kill Voldemort. He took measures many years ago to ensure he would become immortal,” Harry paused at this as everyone’s eyes widened in understanding. How do you kill someone who is immortal?
Harry was talking in a hurry, “The trips that we’ve been taking this year were slowly leading us to this point. All we have left to do is kill the snake, Nagini, and then I can kill Voldemort. This is also the part where Snape comes in. If everything works out the way we expect it to, then Snape’s plan to kill Nagini will occur very soon. He’s using a poison to make it look like a natural death and allow the timing to coincide with our plans. That means he may have to be hidden and protected if something goes wrong,” he looked at Sirius and said, “at Grimmuald Place.” Looking back at the others he continued, “Sirius and Remus have been helping us and…”
He was angrily interrupted by a very perturbed looking Sirius. “YEA, BUT YOU NEVER TOLD US ABOUT THE PROPHECY! HOW COULD YOU KEEP THAT FROM US?!”
Hermione looked at Sirius and Remus and gently said, “Because the last thing Harry wanted was someone to worry over him and pity him. We had to do what we had to do without being coddled by everyone.”
“So, that’s why you were injured a couple of weeks ago Hermione?” Bill asked. “We all thought you were going to die taking a curse for Harry, but I guess you had to if he was going to save the world and all. Bloody mental if you ask me.”
Flashback~~~
“I honestly can’t believe it!” Hermione said, wincing as Ron cleaned her wound. “This was the last shirt I had that looked fairly decent and now, it’s ruined.”
“Hermione, I’ll buy you a new one tomorrow. I’ll buy you a whole new closet full of clothes tomorrow for what you just did!” Harry exclaimed looking at her in awe.
“Harry, be quiet already,” she said, glancing around to see if anyone had overheard. They had just returned to headquarters and everyone else was currently in an Order meeting. Harry wanted to get Hermione’s wound treated before they interrupted with the good news. They had just captured several Death Eaters in a hidden cavern and they needed to be turned into the Ministry. Hermione, however, had been badly wounded taking a hex from an unknown Death Eater that was meant for Harry.
“Look guys, this is still bleeding and it won’t stop,” said Ron, looking at them worriedly. He had honed his healing skills during the last year and was getting frustrated that this wound wouldn’t heal like it should. Hermione was laying on the couch with her ripped shirt pulled up and her abdomen exposed and bleeding. She also had a gash on her arm that was bleeding profusely.
“Um, guys,” said Hermione weakly, “I don’t feel so …” and with that, she passed out, cold to the touch and white as a sheet. When Harry looked at her wounds again, he gasped. “Ron, she looks just like Malfoy when I cursed him,” Harry said shakily.
“Harry, go get Snape!”
Harry, covered in Hermione’s blood and starting to panic, ran to the kitchen and threw open the door. Everyone looked up shocked at the intrusion and at his appearance. Remus was ready to speak when Harry yelled, “Where’s Snape? I need Snape!”
Out from a darkened corner came the tall figure of Severus Snape, known Death Eater and Order Member---a contradiction in his own right, but luckily for Hermione, the Order knew whose side he was really on. “What is it Potter and why are covered in blood?”
“It’s Hermione’s. We were attacked and she took a curse meant for me, it’s the same one I used on Malfoy---yours!” Harry quickly explained as he looked at Snape for understanding.
“Let's go!” Snape quipped and began following Harry as the rest of the Order followed in a panic.
End Flashback
“Yea, well, I still owe Harry a few actually,” she replied looking back to Harry. Again showing those that loved them most, that saving each other’s lives came second nature to the trio.
“So,” Harry continued, “we just wanted to let you know that the end was coming and although we should get prepared, this really is the best news the three of us have had in awhile! I feel certain, and Snape agrees, that he doesn‘t know he‘s almost mortal so we have time to wait a few weeks until N.E.W.T.s are over, or Hermione might kill me before Voldemort gets a chance,” he said smiling, as he glanced at his two best friends. At this comment Ron and Hermione chuckled.
There were general comments and questions asked all around. While the trio, with Ginny and Sirius helping, tried to answer everyone without giving away the details about the horcruxes. Remus looked at Hermione, and was lost in deep thought. That incident really shook him and he still wasn’t sure why. He had known all along what they were doing and that it was dangerous, but he felt that his life wouldn’t be the same if something happened to her. He also didn’t like having those feelings since he was so much older then her, even more years separated them than him and Tonks. He knew she was ok with him being a werewolf and such, but he thought that was where it should end, great friendship and a lot of understanding, and they definitely had a great friendship.
He laughed as he remembered one of their conversations last week. He and Hermione were joking around when he said something she didn’t like. She turned to him and said “Oh just bite me.” Without skipping a beat he said, “see me in a week.” They both started laughing at this, but Bill became rather offended. It took awhile for Remus to explain that nothing was meant by either one of them and they apologized for the offense. Still, she was the only one, besides Sirius, that he could joke with like that. He and Sirius had both made the comment that she reminded them of someone they used to know, but they couldn’t remember who. He finally shook himself out of his thoughts and rejoined the conversation.
“Well, I’m not feeling so well, so I think I’ll go lie down. Full moon and all you know,” Bill said looking a little fuzzy headed.
An hour later, people began saying their goodbyes and leaving the Kitchen quietly so as not to awaken Mrs. Black‘s portrait. Tonks suddenly tripped over a chair and was caught by none other then Kingsley himself. He looked down at her and grinning, whispered very softly so only she could hear, “Falling for me now, Tonks?” As his breath brushed her cheek, she blushed furiously, giggled, and walked out the door. Only Hermione, Harry, and Emma would be staying the night with Sirius, Remus, and the Weasleys. They’d go back to Hogwarts in the morning, before classes started again Monday.
Tonight was indeed the full moon, so Remus and Bill would head over just before the sun set, to a special place that was built just for them right outside of the house. Bill’s transformations were never the same and they changed with every full moon. He had never fully transformed, but instead, changed to every variation in between. He did not, however, have complete control over himself at most times and thought it would be best to stay locked away. On his more docile nights, he would read or take naps, with only a small amount of hair here and there, or some other slight physical differences. But some nights, he would almost completely transform and would do nothing but sleep, thanks to Snape’s Wolfsbane potion. He and Remus had been getting the potion on a regular basis as Snape was spending a lot of time in Voldemort’s lair, brewing it for several other werewolves that tended to be harder to ‘contain.’ He would sneak some to someone in the Order, so that it could be delivered to Remus and Bill.
It was a relief to know that Snape was indeed on their side after all. Dumbledore finally told Harry, by means of a letter and the pensieve that Dumbledore left him, that he was dying. Apparently Marvolo’s ring that he had destroyed not only killed his arm, but was also slowing killing him as well. Knowing of Snape’s unbreakable vow, Dumbledore convinced Snape to kill him and retain his place in Voldemort’s ranks. They did, however, argue over it several times. One such time was overheard by Hagrid. Dumbledore won out in the end and Snape, though hating himself and very disgusted with his actions, was finally forced to end Dumbledore’s suffering.
They had been taking the potion all week and tonight would be the night for locking themselves away. Remus had fixed a room at Grimmuald Place to stay a few years ago, that was slightly away from the house and soundproof, where he curled up to sleep as harmless as could be. Bill would come over each morning before and stay with Remus since both were relatively harmless and seemed to enjoy the company.
Hermione noticed that Bill’s fresh goblet of potion was sitting on the counter and went to take it to him. She looked around the house and couldn’t find him. Finally she ran into Molly. “Have you seen Bill, he forgot his potion after the meeting,” Hermione inquired.
“He was feeling a bit off and went on to ‘the room’ dear. Maybe that potion will help him to calm down. Remus will be out shortly to join him.”
“OK, I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Hermione walked outside to the building and knocked. She heard a loud moan and began to get worried. The sun wasn’t close to fully setting yet, so she tried the handle. When the door opened she looked inside and screamed. There stood Bill, fully transformed, and growling loudly at her. She dropped the goblet, slammed to door closed, and took off to the house in a panic to warn the others. She was half way there when she heard a loud crash behind her.
