Harry Potter was a wizard. Not just any wizard though, he
was “The Boy Who Lived”, a title he hated with a passion. At the moment
though he was a very confused 14 year old, who’d been locked in his room for
the last two days, with a rather limited selection of people he could turn to
for help. He’d actually been confused on this matter for the better part of a
year to be truthful. He’d had some light shed on the subject near the end of
the school year but it hadn’t been enough to convince him one way or another.
Harry Potter was pretty sure he was gay.
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It had happened about a third of the way through his third
year and it had happened fast. One minute he’d been looking for the golden
snitch in the match against Hufflepuff, and the next he’d realized that he’d
been admiring the opposing team’s seeker. He liked what he saw, and that
frightened him a little. It was just after that that the Dementors had
attacked him, causing him to fall off his broom. When Harry had woken up he
felt horrible for losing the game, especially when he heard how hard Oliver was
taking it.
Misplaced guilt washed over him, making him feel that he’d
lost due to his distraction, and as he was already unsure of what to think about
his sudden appreciation of the same sex he decided to cover it all up. Harry
made sure to act like a love struck idiot around Cho Chang, the Ravenclaw
seeker; making everyone think he was lusting over her so he could cover up his
true feelings. Cedric seemed to want to draw him out though, and tried to talk
to Harry more than once in the entrance hall. The 13 year old always managed
to get away though by stuttering something unintelligible and running off as
fast as he could.
The revelation that had him considering writing to someone
however came later in the form of his Quidditch team captain. Oliver had come
to see Harry at the end of the year and, after dragging him into an abandoned
classroom, explained to him that one of the main reasons he’d been upset after
that match was because he’d seen the way Harry had looked at Cedric. With that
one look the keeper had come to the realization that he no longer had a chance
with Harry. Stunned Harry had blurted out something that would make him blush whenever
he remembered the incident afterwards.
“Then it’s ok to like guys?!”
The resulting conversation was an eye opener to the raven
haired teen. Oliver had stared at him in amazement and shock for a solid minute
before answering finally.
“Of course it is Harry. Who would tell you that
it wasn’t? A person’s magic chooses its soul mate, be they of the same or
opposite sex. It’s not like we would die out from lack of children when it’s
just as easy for men to carry a child with the right potion. I’m not sayin’
that you can’t have fun before then, but unless it’s an arranged marriage most
Wizards and witches don’t marry anyone but their destined mate.”
Harry blinked a few times at this information. It made
sense he supposed, after all if there was a potion that could turn you into
someone else for an hour why not one that would allow a guy to get pregnant?
But something was still bothering him, a few things actually.
“Oliver, you said magic chooses the soul mate,
well what if you don’t like the person?”
“Hmm. I don’t think that happens. Magic
doesn’t just look for a match in strength, it also looks for the way it’s used
and what the wizard or witch’s best match would be. Of course people still
marry without the soul bond but most times that doesn’t last forever.”
“Does everyone just accept this? Isn’t there
bound to be some prejudices?” Harry blurted out thinking what the Dursleys
would say if they heard such a thing. Not that he thought their view to be
correct but he’d had to sit through enough of Vernon’s lectures on why “queers”
should be drawn and quartered to be afraid of the man.
“Mostly with muggle born, but some of them are
open minded.” Oliver answered as though he were dismissing it as unimportant.
“How do you know when you’ve found your soul
mate?” Harry asked trying to keep the conversation going so he could get more
information. Oliver was a pureblood and while he wasn’t against muggleborns he
had a tendency to assume they would see and understand things that he and other
purebloods had been taught growing up.
“Well, the two bonded people will realize it
just after their first kiss, and to any witch or wizard watching they’ll glow
white during that instance. Before that though, the two will be drawn towards
one another whether they fully realize it or not. My Mum was in the same year
as your parents and when she explained all this to me she told me that it was
obvious to everyone in Gryffindor that they were soul mates. Apparently your
Mum got angry at your father at least once a day, she was always yelling at him
and his friends, but she was still drawn to him. She always gave in and helped
him with his homework, always worried after him if he was in the hospital
wing. They were just meant to be.” Oliver seemed almost to be reciting the
story, as if he’d heard it so many times that he knew it by heart.
He went on to tell Harry about some of encounters between
the two that his mother had witnessed all of which Harry listened to eagerly.
He very rarely heard stories about his parents so even second hand accounts
were precious to him. When Oliver ran out of things to say there was an
awkward silence.
“So umm…” Harry didn’t know what to say as he
suddenly remembered exactly what topic had brought them here over an hour ago.
“Right. Harry who told you it wasn’t ok to like
guys?”
“My Aunt and Uncle. They’re muggles, really
horrible actually.” He hung his head a little as he spoke to avoid eye contact.
“Huh, well they’re wrong ok? You like who you
like and that’s all you can do. You shouldn’t hide it like I did though, but I
thought you were too young to possibly return my feelings. Now I’ve lost
before I even got to play.”
The sound in Oliver’s voice and the look in his eyes gave
Harry a strange feeling. So when Oliver got up to leave he took a chance and
grabbed his arm to make him stop. When his Quidditch Captain turned back to
him Harry stood up on his toes a little and kissed him before his courage ran
out. There was no magic glow and no sudden knowledge of love but Harry enjoyed
it just the same. When they broke apart they were both flushed but there was a
sad knowing look in Oliver’s eyes.
“I guess we’re not meant for it. No matter how
much you wish it you can’t change the choice of independent magic.” Oliver said
in a quiet, almost strangled voice as he turned to go again.
“Er. Oliver… umm… thanks.” The words seemed so
inadequate but it was all that Harry found he could say. Oliver must have
understood though because he managed to toss a smile back at Harry.
“Oh, and Harry. If he ever treats you badly,
I’ll set Fred and George on him with their beater bats and a couple of charmed
bludgers. They been wantin’ a shot at ya for as long as I have.”
Harry blushed as Oliver left and began to think about how
much more strange his life had just become.
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
So here he was, halfway through July, and he still hadn’t
felt comfortable enough to broach the subject directly with anyone else. He’d
written at least ten drafts of a letter to Sirius trying to figure out just how
to approach the subject. Harry had finally gotten up the courage to send his
last attempt; the others were charred piles of ash in the wastebasket, three
days ago and was anxiously dreading the response.
The reply shouldn’t have surprised him as much as it did,
though it did do much to set him at ease. Sirius had gotten Remus to send an
extremely long letter about different customs concerning the subject as well as
some toned down personal experiences including the fact that he had found one
of his soul mates already. One of the things mentioned in the letter was that
in certain circumstances it was possible to have more than one soul mate and
that in such cases all partners were bonded to each other, not just one
particular mate. The letter explained that much of what was taboo in the
muggle world was not so in the Wizarding world because all it would take to
prove it was consensual was a few drops of veritiserum and a pensieve. Some
common prohibited acts between the two worlds were rape, pedophilia (the legal
age between a child and adult was 14 in the Wizarding world which surprised
Harry a bit), and abuse among others.
Oliver must have spoken with the twins, and apparently Lee
Jordan as well, because all three began writing letters to him with tips on
getting someone to notice him as well as suggestions that made Harry go bright
red in the face. They started arriving a few days after his letter from Sirius
and Remus and he didn’t know which one was more embarrassing at first. That is
until one joint letter arrived from the three teenaged boys suggesting he join
any of the three, or all of them at once, for some fun whenever he wanted to.
He decided that that letter was hands down the most embarrassing. He’d written
back mortified telling them that he wasn’t sure if he was ready for anything
like that yet.
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Later when he’d gone to the Burrow to join Ron for the rest
of the summer and go with them to the Quidditch World Cup he was acutely
uncomfortable around the twins until they made it obvious that they weren’t
going to push him into anything. When they were looking for the portkey to the
camping grounds they had run into Cedric and his father. After one look at the
Hufflepuff Harry had to duck his head to hide his blush while Fred and George
were glaring nonstop at the older boy. The twins’ action was partly due to the
match from the last semester where Hufflepuff had beat Gryffindor and partly
due to them knowing about Harry’s crush on the boy. Cedric tried to get Harry
to one side to talk but they were called over to the portkey and parted soon
after landing.
The first real chance they had to talk was after the names
were chosen for the Triwizard Tournament Champions. They were walking out of
the great hall together.
“So.” Said Cedric, with a slight smile. “We’re
playing against each other again!”
“I s’pose so.” Harry said glumly. He was
completely dumbfounded right now from everything that had happened earlier. To
be truthful playing against Cedric was the last thing he wanted right
now.
“So… tell me… How did you get your name in?”
Cedric said loudly while miming something Harry didn’t quite catch.
“I didn’t. I didn’t put it in. I was telling
the truth.”
“Ah… Ok,” said Cedric before putting a finger to
his mouth for silence, then pointing to an empty classroom. “Well…
see you, then.”
Cedric seized Harry’s arm, walked into the room he had
pointed to, and cast a silencing spell on the classroom.
“Sorry about that. I spotted Fred and George
from your house, and Serene from mine. They were following us, I spotted them
when we went round the corner. Look Harry I believe you that you didn’t put
your name in the goblet.”
“Er… thanks Cedric. So… how come you had to
tell me this in here?”
“Well that’s no why I brought you in here.
Harry I’ve been trying to talk to you since last year but we keep getting
interrupted.”
“What did you want to talk about?” Harry asked
blushing as Cedric stepped quite close to him.
“About that. Harry I,”
“What are you two doing here?! We sent you back
to your dorms! Five points from Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. Now to bed, both
of you!” Professor McGonagall said as she burst into the room.
Harry and Cedric jumped apart guiltily though Harry didn’t
know what exactly he had to be guilty about. This did seem to prove what
Cedric had said earlier about how they kept getting interrupted.
Ok people. I desperately
need a beta for this fic and for one I tried to post a while back called
Underestimated. I have enough written, handwritten anyway, of this fic to post
several more chapters, but I’m still not sure what the pairings will be, other
than it being mainly Yaoi. Of course there will still be het pairings, such as
Lily and James and whatnot but other than that it’s up in the air still. So
vote on your favorite Harry/male ship and please, please somebody tell me
they’ll be my beta for this fic.
