AN: Hey guys. This is the start of my multi-chaptered epic! Its an odyssey adventure staring Hermione and Draco. Woot. DISREGARD BOOK 7! This does follow book six, I believe, but not seven. I use cannon in a funny way. I pick and choose what I want and then ignore the rest. So I tried to make it as accurate as possible but something might be a little off. I do use the Harry Potter Lexicon for reference, though, so just FYI. Just a reminder to please pay close attention to the couple, rating, and summary because I won’t be repeating it. Thanks so much. I really hope you all enjoy it and please, READ AND REVIEW!
Extended Summary: Follow Draco and Hermione on their great adventure as they struggle through the seven deadly sins on their journey to get home. It all started with detention in the forest, but it led to much, much more. Having to cope with each other is hard enough but on top of that they have to deal with their greatest sins as well! And what is happening back at Hogwarts now that our two protagonists are gone? Find out in…Temptations.

‘Sin from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again.’
-- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
“This is bloody ridiculous.”
He was doing it again. She’d been listening to him complain ever since they left the castle. It was frustrating beyond belief. Her jaw tightened as she ground her teeth together when she heard him sigh for the hundredth time.
She was not going to fight with him anymore though. That was what had gotten them into this mess in the first place. Fighting in the corridor sometime before dinner. It had been empty and Hermione stopped to dig through her bag and make sure she had gotten everything from her last class. Then he came along. It was stupid really. She couldn’t even remember what they had been fighting about. The normal things probably. But despite the little spat beginning like normal…it ended much differently.
A duel. In the middle of the hall where anyone could come have by. What had they been thinking? Whatever it had been, it hadn’t been rational. And someone did come along. A very important someone.
McGonagall. The Headmistress.
She, of course, had taken over for their seventh year, after the death of Dumbledore. And she was brutal. Unyielding. But it was necessary. Because there was a war brewing and everyone knew it. The entire wizarding world was walking on pins and needles just waiting for it. Any day now. But they had decided to keep the school open. For those student’s whose parent’s decided to let them come back anyway. It was an act of pure defiance. To prove that they were not scared and they were not going to run and hide just because of the threat that loomed over them. School, and life, would go on as it always did.
Except it wasn’t like it always had been.
But that didn’t matter now. It would never go back to the way it was. It was a fact they’d all eventually learned to accept.
“They’re crazy, you know? Sending us out here in the middle of the night, alone, with…whatever could be out here!”
She wanted to slap him and tell him to shut that annoying trap of his, but she couldn’t. Besides, he had a valid point. With all that was going on, she couldn’t believe that McGonagall would still give them detention in the Forbidden Forest. At night. Alone. Together. Without supervision.
Well, they had supervision. Hagrid. But he had bailed. For some reason. They weren’t exactly sure why, but it was all very suspicious. They’d gone to his cabin at eight o’clock, as instructed. And when he answered the door, he seemed…frightened. Frazzled. And very much distracted. He hadn’t even known he had detention duty to chaperone. But there was something else. He had cuts and scratches all over his face. It reminded Hermione of when he went to visit the giants in fourth year. He looked awful.
And apparently he was busy so he instructed them to go by themselves, gather the Gurdyroot that McGonagall told them to get, and come right back. He warned them not to go too far in and he sent Fang along with too. For protection they supposed. Though, Draco learned quite well from first year detention in the forest that Fang was a coward and absolutely no help.
Still, it was better than nothing.
If that wasn’t odd enough, the fact that they were searching for Gurdyroot was definitely making them curious. It wasn’t in many potions that Hermione knew of but according to Luna Lovegood, it was a great way to ward off Gulping Plimpies. Whatever those were. But still, none of that explained why they needed to go get it. At night. Alone. It wasn’t hard to find. It wasn’t hard to carry or extract. Just pick it and leave. They could have easily gone in the daylight. Or even better, they could have gone to the greenhouse. Hermione was sure that it wasn’t a rare plant and that Professor Sprout had plenty of it stored away.
But she wasn’t one to argue with the professors.
So here they were, picking their way through the trees in the dead of night with only their wands to light their way.
They weren’t deep into the forest but it was far enough that they could no longer see the end of the woods line. And that was slightly unnerving to both of them, though, they wouldn’t admit it.
But relief was soon found. Draco looked to his left and his eyes met with a beautiful sight. The Gurdyroot.
“Finally.” He groaned in frustration as he darted to the left. Hermione almost smiled as she saw the tiny plant and followed him over to it. They dug at it and easily pulled it from the earth. Gathering it into a pile, Hermione put it inside of her tiny bag and then shrunk it all down to put in her pocket.
“Lets get out of here.”
Easier said than done, as they soon found out. It had only taken them about a half an hour to find the root in the forest, but it was taking them far longer to try and get back out. Hours they walked. Draco was sure that it was close to midnight. That was a dangerous time to be out of the castle. Not to mention that he was tired and cold and hungry. Draco Malfoy was not used to suffering from such things. Not when he was at school anyway. His home life was a different story. But he wasn’t going to think about that. He was lucky. Blessed. Honored. Just like his father kept telling him.
“This is all your fault, Granger.” He was practically growling at her as he spoke.
“My fault? My fault?!” She’d kept her anger in long enough. “Excuse me but you were the one who attacked me in the hall today.” Her eyes were wide, her mouth formed into a scowl. She couldn’t believe that he was blaming it all on her. All she did was defend herself.
“Attacked you? You would say that. It isn’t my fault that you can’t seem to take a joke.” His rationale was completely ridiculous though. It hadn’t been just a joke. They both knew it. It was a rude insult delivered with the intent cause humiliation and pain. And that was exactly what it had done.
“You called me a mudblood!” It hurt her to even say the word. She’d only heard it a handful of times. Such an awful word. She couldn’t fathom why people even thought of such things. Just more ways to degrade. To hate. It was beyond her understanding.
Or maybe it wasn’t. After all, she hated too. Hated Death Eaters. Hated Voldemort. And she could think of many words that she’d like to call them. What made her any different? Nothing. If someone hated her, which she knew would inevitably happen, everyone had someone who hated them for some reason or anther, then they would think of ways to justify their hate and degrade her. With names. Words.
But just because it was realistic, did not mean it hurt any less.
“Oh, what, is almighty Granger afraid of a tiny little word? Does that hurt mudblood? Huh? Weren’t you the one who said names didn’t mean anything?” He was taunting her now; on purpose. He knew the word was nasty and that was why he said it. It had such an effect.
And she had such amusing reactions.
Hermione was nearly in tears now. Nearly, but not quite. Red blotches stained her cheeks. From rage. Pure rage.
“I never said they didn’t mean anything! I said fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself. I don’t fear the word mudblood. I hate it. Because it insinuates that your blood is better than mine. And that is ridiculous.” She turned then. Stopped walking and turned to him, blocking his path so that he had to face her and see her anger. It wasn’t like he could miss it though. It was radiating off her in waves. He could feel it. And it was suffocating him.
“You will never be better than me.” Her voice was frighteningly cold as she stared daggers at him. She didn’t need to qualify her statement. He understood perfectly well what she was saying.
And she was wrong. Very wrong.
Without hesitation, he took a step forward, closing the small gap between them. As expected, he towered over her, his shadow engulfing her tiny frame. Their eyes stayed locked, neither willing to stand down. It was a battle of wills. Of beliefs.
“Keep telling yourself that mudblood.”
And he was gone. Walking swiftly, furiously, through the forest. Away from her.
Well that was fine.
Turning, she walked away too. In the opposite direction. She could make her way back without him. And she sincerely hoped that he never found his way out. Ever.
Incidentally, neither of them were having much luck in that department. In getting out of the forest. Instead, they seemed to be getting more lost, if that was possible.
Hermione shivered. It was the middle of the night in the Forbidden Forest and all she had on was her school cloak. It was freezing, and bringing a winter cloak had never even occurred to her. She didn’t think she’d need it. They weren’t supposed to be out that long. Just an hour at the most. Grab the roots and leave.
So what happened? Her one hour trip turned into five hours. Five frustrating hours. But it wasn’t just that, that bothered her. It was the fact that she wasn’t sure how many more hours it would take her to escape. Because she was undeniably lost. And everyone was asleep in the castle. If she couldn’t find her own way out, no one would even think to come and look for her until at least late morning.
That scared her. No matter how much of a stubborn Gryffindor she was…the thought of spending the night alone in the forest with dark creatures moving about…that was enough to make her want to crawl in a hole and cry.
She wouldn’t. That would be childish. Hysterical even. But it still sounded like a lovely idea in her head.
She wondered if he was out yet. If he was back in the warm castle. In his warm bed. Did he even think to check and see if she was back? Would he report her missing in the morning? No. Of course not. He wouldn’t care. Her disappearance would be a good thing. Just one less muggle-born to deal with later.
Her thoughts stopped there. So did her heart. She heard something. Off to her right. Her head swiveled in the direction as her eyes roamed over the area. Her wand light didn’t help much at all. She could make out a few trees and bushes. But nothing else. No animal. No…nothing.
Taking a deep breath, she turned back in the direction she was heading. It was just her imagination. She was becoming paranoid. Whatever was out there wouldn’t hurt her. And if it tried to, she was a capable witch. She had helped Harry defeat Voldemort and the Death Eaters how many times? She could easily defend herself.
Yes, telling herself that lie made her feel much more comfortable.
There it was again.
The noise.
Her wand was in the air in an instant as she tired to look closer, to figure out what it was. But still…nothing.
Or something.
Red eyes. Barely even noticeable. But she saw them just for a second. And that was enough for her. Too much in fact. In an instant she was gone, running off in another direction, as fast as her legs could carry her.
A ways off, Draco was in a similar predicament. He could have sworn that he had headed back the same way they’d come into the woods. But he walked and walked and still, no castle in sight.
He was scared. There was no denying it anymore. He was by himself and he was scared shitless. The sounds of the forest seemed to be amplified in his ears and every few seconds he jumped, preparing for attack. It never came though, of course. He was just being paranoid and he knew that. But still, every time a the wind blew or a twig broke, he took notice.
“They can bet my father will hear about this.” The fact that his father was a known Death Eater who had escaped out of Azkaban, and wasn’t around to help him get his way, didn’t even register in his brain at that moment. It just made him feel better to complain. To concentrate his fear and turn it into cockiness and irritation. A defense mechanism that he tended to fall back on.
But sadly, it wasn’t working as well as he wanted it to. He picked up his pace a bit. But he wasn’t sure if that was going to help anything. If he was heading in the wrong direction, he’d just get even more lost, more quickly.
But thinking like that wouldn’t get him anywhere. He had to be positive. He was positive he was going to get out.
He was positive he was lying to himself.
An unfamiliar sound broke his thoughts and he froze mid-step. Slowly, he turned his head around. He wished he hadn’t. Standing only yards away from him, was a creature. He couldn’t tell what exactly because the wand light didn’t illuminate that far but he could clearly make out its huge shape and narrowed red eyes. They were narrowed onto him.
Without another thought, he sprang to life and ran.
It didn’t even occur to him that the creature wasn’t following. He was too consumed with the need to escape, his adrenaline kicking in overtime. His legs moved at full speed, his lungs burned as they tried to keep up.
He dared a glance behind him. It wasn’t there. But he still did not stop.
His swiftness only made the impact that much worse when he slammed right into something unexpectedly. Sharps pains shot through his jaw and he tumbled backwards. Reaching out he grabbed for anything to stop his fall. His fingers tightened around something soft…
And then all was black.
