Wrong, wrong, wrong! Harry’s conscience screamed as he watched Albus and Scorpius get off the train at King’s Cross. He’s seventeen, you daft old fool!
Yes, he argued with himself, and that makes him an adult, thank you. Harry glanced over at Ginny, who was standing with her arms crossed and lips pursed, and looking decidedly bitter. Not that he could blame her, really. The divorce had been anything but amicable. He’d cheated on her with his Auror partner and was caught. The fact that his partner at the time had been Maxwell Tierney only made things worse. The dissolution of his family was a high price to pay for a two-month fling, but in the end, Harry supposed it was all for the best. He felt lighter and freer, not that Ginny was baggage. He loved her. He just didn’t love her.
“Dad!” Albus yelled over the din of students and parents. “You made it!”
“I promised I would, didn’t I?” Harry smiled and nodded towards Scorpius. “Hello, Scorpius.”
“Mr Potter,” Scorpius replied. “It’s good to see you. Al was worried you wouldn’t be able to get the time off from work.”
“Yes, well. I have to go back the day after Christmas. Where’s Lil?”
“Chatting with her insane little friends,” Al said, rolling his eyes. “Me an’ Scorp still get to spend this week with you, right?” He looked over at Ginny, who hadn’t bothered to join the conversation. “Mum?”
“Of course. But Christmas, you’re with me.” She looked pointedly at Harry, as if daring him to fight her. He just sighed. The hardest thing about the divorce had been divvying up holidays. Christmas this year was Ginny’s.
“We’ve agreed on that,” Harry answered wearily. “There’s no need to bring it up here.”
“Bring what up he- Dad!” Lily cried, as she flung her arms around Harry. “You really did come!”
“I did. I don’t know why everyone’s so shocked.”
“You’re a busy man these days, Harry,” Ginny said shortly. “Always working. Breaking in new partners and such.”
“Not here, Gin. Please.”
Ginny started to say something back, but Albus cut her off. “Mum. Enough, okay? I’ll see you and Lil and everybody at Christmas. We should get going before it gets much later.”
“Fine.” She kissed Albus on the cheek, gave him a hug and helped Lily with her trunk. “See you at Christmas.”
“Well now. Are you boys hungry?”
--
“Got a new boyfriend yet?” Scorpius took a sip of his butter beer. Despite the fact that he and Albus were both of age, Harry wouldn’t let them order alcohol.
Harry nearly choked on his bite of sandwich. “Huh?”
“Have you got-”
“Knock it off,” Al said, laughing into his bottle. “You’re making my dad blush.”
“Only making conversation.”
“Kids these days,” Harry mock-chided. “No respect for the elderly.”
“You’re hardly elderly, Mr Potter.” Scorpius said. “And you look good for your age. Any age, really. I’m sure loads of men-”
“Scorp! That’s my dad!”
“Only making conversation,” he said again, smiling.
“Er, yes. Thank you, Scorpius,” Harry managed. This was going to be a long week.
--
Harry sat alone in front of the fire long after the boys had gone to bed. Seventeen, his conscience reminded him. He’s just a boy! You’re old enough to know better, and too old for him.
Seeing Scorpius get off the train had set something off. The school year had certainly been good to him, and he’d grown up rather nicely. Ah, but he isn’t grown up, is he, you sick bastard? Aren’t you past the age for school-boy infatuations?
I’m not infatuated, Harry argued, then shook his head. Having silent conversations with oneself was never a good sign. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger. It’s just aesthetics. He’s pleasing to the eye, is all.
You want to fuck him. Admit it, you nonce. He’s your son’s best mate, and you want to fuck him. How low can you get?
“Oh, piss off!” Harry said aloud.
“I only came down for some water, but if you’d like, I can get out of your hair.” Scorpius was standing at the foot of the stairs in only his pyjama bottoms, looking shocked.
“What?” Harry opened his eyes and suddenly wished he hadn’t. Just aesthetics, he told himself. “Not you, Scorpius. I was just, er, thinking about something. The kitchen’s all yours. Help yourself to whatever you want.”
“Do you always tell empty rooms to piss off?”
“Well, no. Not always.” Only when I’m trying to justify wanting to bend certain teenaged boys over my couch. “It must be senility setting in.”
“I see,” Scorpius laughed, and stepped off the last stair. “But you’re not old enough to be senile.”
“I’m as old as your father,” Harry heard himself say.
“And he’s not senile either. Close, though.” Scorpius stretched, lifting his arms up over his head, and yawned. Harry did not look at the way his stomach muscles pulled taut or the way his pyjama bottoms slipped down half an inch. “Merlin, I’m tired! And thirsty.”
“Help yourself,” Harry said again. “Put out the light when you’re finished. I’m going up to bed.”
--
Harry took Albus and Scorpius to the cinema the next day, since both boys loved seeing films. The only time Scorpius ever got to go was when he stayed over with Al, because unlike Draco, Harry had introduced his children to the Muggle world. Their grandmother had been Muggle-born, after all.
“I’m always amazed,” Scorpius said quietly when Harry handed him his ticket. “Muggles find the most interesting ways to entertain themselves, don’t they? I bet your job would make a great film, Mr Potter.”
“I don’t know who would pay to see me sit at my desk and do paperwork all day,” Harry answered. “Unless it was a film to cure insomnia.”
“But you don’t do that every day, right?” It brought Harry joy to see his son still excited about his career. He smiled. “You’re out there catching criminals!”
“Yeah, Mr Potter. Don’t sell yourself short. I bet you’re an amazing Aur- cop. Freeze, put your hands up, and all that.”
“You watch too many films,” Harry said, secretly and disturbingly pleased at the compliment.
--
“Can we go to McDonalds?” Al asked as they were leaving the cinema. “Since it’s our Mug- er, Saturday?”
“Ooh, yeah! I want one of those macky things with the bread in the middle!” Scorpius was a bit loud, and a passing couple sniggered.
“Merlin, Scorp. It’s a Big Mac. Biiig Maaac. I swear, it’s not that hard to remember. And it’s not as exciting as all that.”
“Maybe not for you,” Scorpius mumbled.
“Scorpius doesn’t get to do this sort of thing very often,” Harry reminded Albus. “So, let’s go get a macky thing with the bread in the middle.”
--
The three found a table in the lower level of the restaurant, and Scorpius excused himself to the toilet. When he was well out of earshot, Al looked across the table Harry. “If I tell you something, no matter how weird it is, will you keep it secret?”
“Is it illegal?”
“Nope. Just sort of gross. No offence.”
“After a set-up like that, I don’t know if I want to hear it,” Harry said, poking his straw down through the lid of his drink. “But as long as it’s not illegal, and you’re not in some sort of trouble, I won’t tell a soul.”
“I’m not sure how to say this.” Al looked over at the door to the gents’. “But Scorpius fancies you.”
“Al,” Harry started, but he was cut off.
“I just wanted to warn you. I know you wouldn’t hurt his feelings on purpose, but if he said something stupid or something, you might be shocked and accidentally do it.”
Shocked didn’t begin to cover it. Harry slid his glasses up and rubbed the bridge of his nose. This was not good. Not good at all. “Scorpius is gay?”
“I don’t know if he is, or thinks he is, or whatever. But maybe you can talk to him about it, if he asks you or something. If he’s confused, you can help him out.” Al put a french fry into his mouth just as Scorpius emerged from the toilet. “But only if he asks you. Don’t say I said anything.”
“I promise.” Thinking of taking advantage of a terrified young man? You’re sick, mate. Harry ignored his thoughts and concentrated on his lunch.
--
Harry braced himself to let Scorpius down gently, but three days passed and nothing happened. Nothing more was said about Albus’ confession, but every now and then, Scorpius would compliment Harry and Al would make a face that said ‘I told you so!’
You’re a grown man, for fuck sake! Harry’s inner voice chided him as he lay in bed in his boxers. He’s a kid- yes, a kid- with a crush. He’s probably still a bloody virgin.
I know, Harry mentally countered. But he isn’t a kid at all. He’s old enough to make decisions, and if he wants me to show him what it can be like with a man, why shouldn’t I?
Because he’s innocent, you skeevy git!
Exactly! Better me than some weirdo in a club, right? At least I’d be gentle. And I wouldn’t do anything he wouldn’t want.
Whatever it takes to be able to look at yourself in the mirror.
Harry was beginning to question his sanity, or what was left of it, when there was a knock at his bedroom door. “Al?”
“No,” came the voice from the other side. “Scorp.”
This is a test. Pass it. “Give me a sec.” He got up and put a tee-shirt on before walking over and opening the door. “What did you need?”
“I just wanted to talk to you, if that’s all right.” Scorpius brushed his hair back and smiled a bit. He was wearing only his pyjama bottoms again. “Actually, I wanted to ask you something.”
Be the kind, caring counsellor, not the old pervert. “Sure. What is it?”
“May I come in? It’s sort of personal.”
No. “All right.” This will not end well for you. The paper will have a field day and Draco will skin you alive and wear your balls as a hat. “Not sure how that would work,” Harry muttered.
“Sorry?”
“Nothing. Come on in and close the door if you want.” Stupid bastard.
Scorpius did. “May I sit?”
“Er, yeah. Sure.” Scorpius sat on the corner of the bed and leant his head against the post. Harry stayed put.
“Did you know you were gay before, you know, the thing that happened?”
“My affair, you mean?” Scorpius nodded. “You can call it that, it’s all right.”
“So, did you know?”
“I think so. You have to remember what my life was like when I was your age. I had a crazy time of it, being expected to save the world, as it were. I married Al’s mum because, well, I did love her, but it was more of wanting to do something normal for a change.” Harry crossed his arms over his chest and smiled slightly. “Glad I did it though. I love my kids.”
“I’m glad you did too, else I wouldn’t have Al.” Scorpius’ eyes widened after he realised what he’d said. “I don’t mean like that! I mean, he’s my friend.”
“Even if you did mean it like that, it would be okay. Al’s a good kid.”
“Yeah, but, well, he likes girls and I like someone else.” Scorpius played with the drawstring on his pyjamas and looked at the floor.
“Someone who isn’t a girl, I take it.”
“Definitely not a girl.”
“It’s perfectly normal to be attracted to another boy. I think my life would have been a lot easier if I’d realised that when I was seventeen.”
“Not really a boy, either,” Scorpius said, taking a deep breath in. “He’s, well, he’s quite a bit older. Not old-old, but older than I am. And I’ve fancied him for awhile now, a couple of years I think.”
Oh shit. Shit, shit, shit. “One of your professors?”
“Merlin, no!” Scorpius laughed nervously. “It’s, er, you.” Harry felt his stomach drop into his knees.
WRONG! “I, erm, don’t quite know what to say.” Tell him you’re flattered, but you’re much too old for him! Send him back to his bed, nice and safe.
“And I’m of age now.”
I know, Gods, do I know. “You are that, yes. But,” Harry held his hand up, stopping short any protest Scorpius may have wanted to utter. “But, you’re still very young, and though it wouldn’t be against the law, certain people may think it’s inappropriate. Especially as you have one more term before you’re finished with school.” And because he’s your son’s friend, you idiot.
“So, there’s no chance then?” Scorpius was still fiddling with his drawstrings and not looking at Harry.
“Your father would eviscerate me.”
“If he wouldn’t?” The emotion in Scorpius’ voice was heartbreaking. Harry crossed the room and knelt in front of him. “Would you want me then?”
Merlin’s pickled balls, you’re well fucked now aren’t you? “Scorpius, you’re very, very attractive.” Don’t touch him, whatever you do. You can get out if this. Tell him no. “And I would be lying if I said the idea of being with you wasn’t appealing, but I can’t.” There. Not so bad.
“I understand. I do, really. I’m so embarrassed.” Scorpius started to cry. “Fuck. Sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry or embarrassed. If anyone should be sorry, it’s me.” Then, against his better judgement, Harry leant up and whispered into Scorpius’ ear, “Because if my son wasn’t sleeping in the next room, I’d have had you out of those pyjamas the moment you came through my door.” You’re courting disaster, old man. Send him on his way. Tell him to have a nice wank and forget about it.
“M-Mr Potter,” Scorpius breathed warm against Harry’s cheek.
“Go to bed, Scorpius,” Harry whispered. “We’ll talk about it again when you’ve left school.”
