Despite what others on the outside thought they knew about the tumultuous relationship between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, there were rules. With each passing day, week, and month they had cultivated a fairly straightforward, if a bit morally bereft, set of codes by which they lived. There was a method to what appeared to be madness. Only those few in their inner circle were aware of this fact, and even they only knew bits of the Harry/Draco rulebook.
For instance, Draco handled the finances—he was better at it. Harry handled Draco—he was best at it. Harry always let Draco decide where they went to dinner. Draco always let Harry decide their lovemaking position. Draco handled and managed the public when it tried to make a spectacle of every little twitch Harry made. Harry made sure Draco only used minor hexes when the reporters got too brave. Draco made the lube—he had a preference. Nothing but what came out of his cauldron would do. Harry made breakfast on Sunday, always. They both had equal veto power when it came to their intimate liaisons, although neither exercised the option often. Neither was allowed to rim or swallow for any of their one-offs, and they both topped exclusively outside of their relationship. These barred acts were reserved for their private moments. These were the things they only offered to each other, tokens of their private bond. Gifts they saved solely for one another. They were reminders that no matter what happened in darkened alleys, Muggle bathhouses, or the bathroom stalls of dingy bars and backrooms of nightclubs they ultimately belonged to one another. It was this absolute truth that made each one come home at night no matter how late, how drunk, how reeking of some relative stranger’s cologne or perfume.
This is what those on the outside failed to recognize, and it often led young (and some old) witches and any number of gay or bi wizards into a false sense hope for their own futures with either ‘The Savior of the Wizarding World’ or the attentions and perhaps the surname of the wealthiest pureblood in Britain. There was also the contingent, albeit dwindling, of the wizarding population that still on general principle, scoffed in self-righteous indignation on behalf of the ‘Boy Who Lived’ and the ‘Despicable Little Malfoy heir/reformed Death Eater’ that was corrupting their beloved Harry Potter.
Draco found this last contingent amusing to no end. Weekly he could count on at least a few Howlers attempting to breach his wards to yell foulness at him regarding his no doubt nefarious plot to screw over their savior. Little did they know who really did the screwing in his and Harry’s bed. He knew that the whole of wizarding society might well try to hex him impotent if they had half a notion what he and Harry got up to. Despite this risk, he knew and Harry knew that they could no more separate from each other than Dumbledore (rest his soul) could have made Voldemort buy sugar quills for little Muggle children. You see, no matter how twisted their relationship appeared on the outside, the other truth that no one, probably not even those friends in their inner circle knew (although Hermione may suspect) they needed each other. Not the way children need their mothers, or even the way one needs a lover. No, this need could not be put into a simple sentence. It could not be explained. It could only be lived and that is what they did for each other.
They allowed one another to live, on their own terms, without the dogma of centuries worth of pureblood propaganda and without the demands of rescuing the world. They lived their own lives for their own pleasures, their own causes and their own ambitions. In each other they found a guilt-free existence, an existence where they mirrored each other’s soul. Draco allowed Harry to embrace in his dark side without fear of alienation and judgment, knowing that Draco would rein him in should it threaten to overtake him. With Draco, Harry could explore his baser instincts without fear of reprimand or abandonment. Harry allowed Draco to simply be Draco in all ways, without the burden of constant perfection. He was perfectly imperfect in Harry’s eyes. Harry accepted Draco’s dark desires, indulged him in his need to be near power and didn’t judge him for it. He knew that his power was like a drug for Draco, but he also knew that Draco saw in him more than just the magic, which is more than he could say for most anyone else. Draco never tried to undermine Harry’s power, never tried to subdue his magic, or make him fear being left alone should he embrace his whole self, the Slytherin and the Gryffindor. Draco encouraged Harry to no longer bury or deny a part of his magic, his skill, his need. With Draco Harry learned to accept both parts of himself, the light and the dark. They melded together to form a man no longer in conflict with himself, but instead a wizard of unsurpassed power—a man that belonged only to Draco.
This is what Ginny Weasley finally accepted, even if she did not fully understand, nearly a year ago after she found Harry mouth-fucking Draco in his office when she surprised him with lunch. Ginny always was a smart girl and she knew when to throw down her cards and leave the table. However, some could never accept what they could not understand.
