Pansy’s eyes glanced about, catching the slightest of movements. Her ears could detect life. She heard heartbeats, blood flowing like rushing rivers. The sounds echoed in her ears loudly. ‘What’s going on?’ she thought, ’how can I possibly hear these things?’
Her head shot to the left. A threat? No. She sniffed the air slightly. Was it man or animal? She stayed her ground. Logic told her to leave but instinct wouldn’t let her.
Ron Weasley slowly came into view. He looked at her, watching her for a moment. “Here, take this.” He said, talking off his cloak.
She looked at her body and noticed she wasn’t wearing a stitch, not even her knickers. She simply stared at him during a moment that would have normally sent her cowering in embarrassment. What happened to her clothes?
When she made no move, Ron walked forward and draped his cloak around her body. She had a strong desire to inhale his scent, so she breathed in deeply. He didn’t appear to be wearing cologne. What she detected could only be described as male. She had no other way to classify it. It was a strong scent, but a safe one.
“Come on.” He turned and began walking. She followed. Ron Weasley was no threat. She kept her body trailing after him, but kept her eyes focused on the nature around her. The forest was alive. She could smell the blood of animals, even distinguish between the species. She could detect the sweat of predators engaged in hunting runs. The panic of those being hunted. The urine and scat marking territories. Even the female musks of those in heat, waiting to find the right mate.
She heard the rustles of leaves at the top of the highest trees. She heard the trickling of water from a brook over 40 feet away.
How was it possible? She searched her mind for an answer. Bits and pieces of the evening came to her mind. She stopped and stared into nothingness as her memories unfolded in her mind.
A few moments later she looked up at Ron. He was standing in front of her, watching her eyes. She leaned forward and inhaled again. She smelt it, the familiarity. She knew what he was. He was the same as her. She knew it. She could smell it. That male scent. It was his pheromones.
“Ron.” The statement she made of his name was understood clearly. He knew she wanted to know. She needed confirmation and he was able to give it to her.
“I know. Come on.” He took her hand and resumed walking. His hand was warm, his skin was rough but not coarse. He held her hand firmly, almost as a caress. She wanted to know how that hand felt caressing a soft and willing body. Why did she think that? What reason could she possibly have to think this way?
While she was lost in her thoughts, Ron was paying close attention to her. He may not have been looking at her, but he had spent the last year becoming more accustomed to the changes he had gone through. His awareness and instincts were highly sharpened. He knew what she was feeling. He heard her heart beating faster, he could smell the slight release of sweat from her pores. Most of all Ron could smell her arousal. A musky scent that inflamed his nostrils. Had she not been a novice to what had happened to her, he would already have her on the ground, rutting into her with a vengeance. But he was still a man and he considered himself still a gentleman. It was his responsibility to see her safe and explain what had happened to her. Instinct would have to wait. The animal would have to wait while the man took care of Pansy.
They walked up to a small cottage. It was tucked out of the way amongst the trees and the stone walls were covered with vines and plants of the forest. The frames were clearly visible, as Ron kept the foliage neatly trimmed, but it was obvious that his home was accepted by the forest.
She walked inside and looked around. As she expected, Ron’s home was lived in. Unlike the virtual mausoleum she had grown up in, Ron’s home had life. He had two massive bookshelves, semi full of books and accented with memorabilia from Hogwarts. She recognized Gryffindor colors. Several photos were scattered around the room. A small table was littered with parchments, ink bottles and quills. The fireplace sprang to life as they entered, and she was warmed immediately.
“This way.” Ron said. She followed him down a hallway. A huge four leg tub sat on the floor of the bathroom he had brought her to. With a flick of his wand it began to fill with water. “I’ll get you some clothes while you get in.”
She sank into the tub, not knowing how badly she wanted a bath but the hot water was all too tempting. She let the water relax her muscles.
Ron entered again with a set of folded clothes. “I charmed them so they would fit when you put them on.” He set the clothes on the counter next to the sink. “May I see?” He asked.
She knew without question what he was talking about without a moment’s thought, she stood up. He had seen her in the forest so it would be pointless to pretend shyness now. She presented her back as he knelt down and looked closer. On her right hip were the crescent marks of both upper and lower jaws of werewolf teeth. The evidence of her attack. There were no other marks on her body, so she hadn’t been beaten. The wounds were healing on their own.
“It’s taking care of itself so you won’t need a healing draught but do you need one for pain?” He asked. She shook her head and sat back in the tub. “I’ll make something to eat and meet you in front of the fire when you’re done.” She nodded and he left her alone to finish bathing.
*********
A short while later Pansy approached the fire bathed and dressed, although barefoot. Normally she didn’t go about without shoes, but Ron hadn’t given her any. A coffee table had been transfigured into a dinner table and two plates were set. “Please, sit down.” Ron said behind her as he walked in with a bottle of wine. She sat down and glanced at the rare steak before her. Pansy usually ate her meat well done, but the practically bloody steak presented to her was mouthwatering. Ron filled their glasses with a merlot and tucked in. Pansy did the same. When the meat hit her tongue, instinct once again took over. She devoured the cutlet, almost growling as she fed. She knew her table manners were atrocious but Ron didn’t seem to care. He calmly ate as she ripped into her food. The only thing that made her feel better about herself was the fact that she did not lean down and sink her teeth into the steak. She wanted to though. Badly. She mentally slapped herself to keep from doing just that.
When she was through, she drained her wine and looked up at Ron. He had also finished and was waiting before refilling the glasses. They took their wine and moved to the big armchairs closer to the fire. A wave of his wand and their dishes floated off to the kitchen while the table set itself back as the coffee table.
She loved the heat from the flame. “I suppose you want to know what happened?” she asked him softly.
“Only if you want to tell me.” He responded.
“What if I’m not ready?” She asked.
“Then I will simply tell you what you should know and do my best to answer any questions.” She seemed deep in thought.
“Xavier.” she finally said.
“Who was he?”
“He was a liaison from Russia. He’s one of many who worked with the Floo Regulation Panel.” At his nod, she continued. “We had been working for several weeks, setting up the ministry to ministry floo network. On the night before he was to return to Russia he asked if we could have dinner. We went out and the evening passed as any other might have. It was a nice night so he walked me home and we passed the forest. All of a sudden he took my hand and apparated me into the forest near the brook. He kissed me, but when I felt his hand pulling my zipper down, I told him to stop. He became more aggressive and I heard my dress rip. I pushed him away and began to run. I didn’t know where I was I just ran away from him. I heard him yell out ‘Divesto’ and all my clothing was gone.”
Ron said nothing. She seemed lost in her memories.
“I don’t know how long I just stayed there. I was aware of things I shouldn’t have been able to hear.” She leaned forward. “Ron, he was a werewolf and he bit me. That’s what happened to me, isn’t it?”
Ron looked at the woman clad in his charmed jeans and skirt. She had grown into a beautiful woman from the girl he once knew. He wondered though if she could handle what life had now thrown at her.
“Yes. While I don’t know the man who did this to you, I know a bite when I see one.” He answered. Pansy leaned back in her chair again. The familiarity she had sensed earlier came back to her. Ron understood perfectly. Of course he would.
“Ron, your senses, are they more attuned then mine?” she asked. He nodded. She gave a small smile. “So you can smell the deer outside the door?” He smiled at her.
“Yes, it’s a doe. An adult.” She raised her eyebrows. “You’ll be able to separate those traits as well, in time.” Several moments passed in silence before she spoke.
“Ron, is the change painful?” Her voice was soft.
“The first one is, but once you know what it feels like, then you become accustomed to it quickly.”
“Ron, you said you would answer my questions?” He nodded. “I need you to tell me what to expect. I need to know everything.” She looked intently at him. Ron leaned forward.
“You’re right Pansy, you need to know. The Ministry considers you a deadly creature now. Employment options will change. Since you already work for the Ministry they will most likely advise you to take employment that won’t inconvenience them for three days out of the month.” Pansy merely nodded. It would be easier to find something that you could do out of your home, that way you don’t inconvenience yourself either.”
“Inconvenience myself?” Ron nodded.
“You shift when the moon is full and change back in the morning. Then you are tired and weak the next day, sleeping most of it away. The third day is spent replenishing energy.” She nodded.
“Replenishing huh?”
“Eating, a lot actually.”
“What should I have in my kitchen?” The thought of how she nearly devoured the nearly raw steak a moment ago filled her head.
“Meats high in protein but also have some steaks, you’ll crave the red meat, but try and have high healthy options as well, chickens, turkeys. Do you have a house elf.” She shook her head. “You might want to get one.”
“Why?” Pansy would have thought she would be dangerous to a house elf.
“When they bond with you, they can feel what you need. They also know when danger of any kind is near and stay out of the way. Anyone else and you would have to find a way to warn them. Elves just know. They even keep the bond when you shift. They make sure food is strategically placed so you can find it and won’t feel the urge to hunt. They will also make sure you stay in your home and no one else will enter your home. Their magic is strong and they will protect you and those around you.” She nodded her head.
“They will also cook for you when you shift back and you are too weak. They will help you get your strength back faster.”
She nodded again. The pros were numerous and since elf magic was as ancient as it was, she could see no cons. “I think I should get one immediately.”
Ron turned his head to the side and calmly said, “Basil?”
An elf popped in and looked at Ron. “Yes sir?”
“Basil, this is Pansy.”
“Hello Basil.”
“Hello Miss.” The elf gave her an odd look then stated, “Miss will need an elf.” Pansy looked at Ron and smiled. He gave her an I-told-you-so smirk.
“Yes, Basil, I will.”
“Basil, do you know of an elf who can serve her?”
Basil hopped up and down. “Yes sir, Basil knows of an elf at Hogwarts. She was an elf for a wolf and his mate until they dies. He asks Dumbledore to take her. She has been there ever since.”
“I’ll write to Dumbledore.” Pansy nodded. The house elf left, and they sat in silence for a few moments.
“Pansy?” She looked up at him, his face suddenly serious. “If it gets out about your condition, the Ministry will take note of it.”
“Let me guess, if there is an attack of any kind, they start off interrogating those deadly creatures first?” Ron nodded. She let out a disappointing sigh. “Anything else?”
“You’ll be able to recognize others. You’ll also be able to smell fear and danger in the people you come into contact with.” She looked at him.
“I think I know what you mean. When you found me in the forest I…..well, I knew it was safe to go with you.” Ron nodded. Again silence took over until Ron spoke. He looked at the clock, it was past 1 in the morning.
“Well it’s late, I have a guest room.”
“That would be great, thank you.” She stood up and followed him to the back. It was simple but like the rest of Ron’s house, welcoming.
“Do you work tomorrow?” He asked.
“No, I don’t.”
“Good then you can sleep as long as you like. No doubt you need it. Good night.”
“Good night Ron.”
