Oh this night is too long
Have no strength to go on
No more pain
I'm floating away
Through the mist
See the face
Of an angel who calls my name
I remember you're the reason I have to stay
Pale by Within Temptation
Draco couldn’t believe it. His fool of a husband had taken a job just before Christmas. So it was with a heavy heart that he paced back and forth in front of their large fireplace. Every so often silvery-blue eyes would cast a glance out the darkened, ice-frosted windows in the hopes of catching a glimpse of his panther, but to no avail. Harry had said that this was his last mission as an Auror, but the blonde man wasn’t sure just how long his love could stay away from that.
The twins had been tucked away, with the promise that they could open presents in the morning. Draco had heard their excited chatter for an hour after putting them to bed. It was now almost Christmas day, nearing midnight, and there was still no sign of his husband. As much as he had grown to love the Weasley’s, it wouldn’t feel right visiting them without Harry, for tomorrow’s dinner.
Giving up on pacing, Draco took up residence in one of the armchairs, his never-ending papers for work in front of him. By the light of the fire he set to work, the time lapsing unnoticed.

Harry looked around the fancy Muggle restaurant that his fiancée had invited him to. It seemed he was early, as he was led to a private table set for two. In the middle of the table were two silver candles, a gold dragon molded onto them. A single white rose adorned a clear vase, reminding Harry that this was his first romantic dinner with his soon-to-be husband. The one set up for the Halloween proposal had gone unnoticed, probably meant for before someone caught them, Draco on one knee, ring in hand, and Harry’s smile, and ran to announce it to the entire ballroom.
It was still unclear if the Halloween night was considered romantic, but Harry knew that those unsure moments had always filled their lives. He knew that it could never be any different, except with the passage of time. After accepting a glass of champagne, it was then that the permanently messy-haired man saw his fiancée’s blonde hair making his way over. Offering Draco a shy smile, he felt his heart flutter when the smile was returned.
“Good evening, Harry,” Draco said, sitting across from him.
“Good evening, Draco. Have a little trouble leaving work?” Harry asked, knowing that the blonde was preparing to become the Minister of Magic at the start of the new year.
The blonde sighed. “Someone forgot to fill out the paperwork on a faulty wand, so I had to track them down. Have you been here long?”
“Just a few minutes,” Harry said.
The waiter came to take their orders, and even though Draco hadn’t had time to look at the menu, he ordered a dish, asking for what Harry was drinking. With the orders place, the man scurried off to get them filled. A dark eyebrow rose at the blonde’s prompt answer.
“Come here a lot?” Harry asked, wondering if Draco had brought a lot of dates here.
“A few times, with mother. That’s not a hint of jealousy I detect in your voice, is it?” the blonde smiled softly.
Harry felt his face redden and decided to change the subject. “Will you be able to make it to the Weasley’s tomorrow? I still haven’t been able to tell them that we’re getting married.”
“I know that I said that I could come with you to tell them, but we’ve just simply not had the same time off. You could show some of that Gryffindor courage and tell them yourself,” Draco teased.
Frowning, Harry countered, “That means you won’t be able to make it, doesn’t it?”
“I’m not sure, if I do finish my work, it might be too late to stop by,” Draco sighed.
Harry felt his heart drop. Ever since Draco had proposed on the last day of October, they had not had a lot of time. It took weeks of scheduling to make this one dinner, and even then something might have come up for either of them. Perhaps it was just that this time of the year was hectic for the Ministry; dealing with odds and ends, preparing for another year. Green eyes looked up when he felt Draco’s cool fingers on his arm.
“All of this madness will be over soon; then we’ll have all the time in the world, I promise,” Draco said, smiling at him.
Giving what he thought was a hopeful smile, Harry was silent until the food came. When Draco had seen the ‘Hero of the Wizarding World’ to the doorstep of Grimmauld Place, they shared a tentative kiss in the cold. Pulling out a green wrapped present, Draco pressed it into Harry’s hands. Blinking down at it, Harry’s curiosity must have been showing on his face for the blonde spoke.
“Just in case I don’t see you tomorrow, I wanted to give you you’re present,” Draco said.
After several seconds of staring, Harry finally spoke: “Wait here a minute.”
Disappearing into the house, the Auror fetched the silvery-blue metallic wrapped present from under his tree. Going back to his fiancée, Harry gave him the present. Draco returned the staring favor before laughing suddenly.
“What a coincidence. I picked green paper for your eyes, and I’ll assume you picked this because of mine,” Draco laughed.
Harry smiled, finding it all amusing. “Open it,” he urged.
The blonde was careful in removing the paper, folding it and tucking it inside his cloak. Underneath was a white box, which was opened. Inside was a photo album, inscribed with Malfoy-Potter in silver letters. Opening it, there on the first page was a picture of the two of them, taken on the night of the Halloween ball, Harry’s slightly shocked expression turned into one of happiness as Draco put his arm around his new fiancée. Just under the picture was Harry’s writing.
“’For the years of happiness to come’,” Draco read, smiling. “It’s perfect.”
The blonde leaned in and kissed him gently. “Now, open yours.”
Harry peeled back the wrapping to find an enchanted rose, encased in glass, as he watched, the rose changed from a pale blue to white, and every color under the rainbow.
“’Let me be the light in your darkest days, Draco’,” Harry saw the gold lettering. “It’s beautiful, Draco. I love it.”
It was Harry’s turn to give the blonde a kiss, blushing as he did so. With several more kisses and soft spoken words, the two parted ways.
******************
As Draco reached the last page of his now filled photo album, he smiled at the last picture. The four of them had taken a walk around an icy pond, just after the twins had been born, and Hermione had snapped a picture of them, all smiles and laughter. Tucked into the back of the book, there was the silvery-blue wrapping paper that he had saved from all those years ago, his first present from his love, and he fingered it briefly, enjoying the memories of it. Just as soon as he closed the book, he heard the door open. Leaving it on the chair, the blonde rushed to the front door. There he saw his panther, drenched in melting snow and covered in dried blood.
Quickly Draco took his panther in his arms, noticing when the smaller man winced. Releasing him, Draco noticed that there were tears streaming down his love’s face. Concern filled his silvery-blue eyes, as he thought that Harry might be hurt. In a flurry of movements, the blonde had banished the other’s cloak, dried him and checked him for injuries. The only one he found was a cut above his left green eye, and he healed it.
“I’m sorry, dragon. I didn’t mean to…” Harry’s voice was quiet, his long dark hair covering his face.
Swiftly Draco lifted the smaller man into his arms and brought him over to the couch, setting him on the plush cushions. “Harry, please love, talk to me,” Draco pleaded.
“I’ve done something unforgivable, Draco. I’ll lose you forever, I know it,” Harry’s voice quivered.
“Now, my love, there’s no way you could ever lose me forever. No matter what. Please tell me what happened,” Draco wrapped the shorter man in his arms.
“It was…it was your father,” Harry said.
The blonde tensed, but quickly relaxed when he realized that Harry had also tensed. Draco rubbed Harry’s back, urging him to continue.
“He was hiding out in some abandoned house. We went in and he struggled with another Auror on the top floor while the rest of us continued to search.
Lucius go a hold of his wand, killing the Auror in the process, the rest of us got up there before he could escape, but he was shooting off hexes everywhere. He…he aimed his wand at me, about to use the Killing Curse, and I…I…” Harry’s voice broke, his body shaking.
“It’s all right, panther, go on. Please,” Draco said, kissing him gently.
“I dodge it, barely getting out of the way, and I…I killed him,” Harry said, the tears coming in rivers now.
Draco held him close, rocking him. “Oh, my poor panther. I know it must have been hard on you.”
“You’re not mad with me?” Harry turned his tear laden eyes to look at his dragon.
“No, Harry. I came to terms long ago that he would eventually be sought out. I’m just glad you’re safe,” Draco kissed him passionately.
Silence passed between them before Harry spoke. “I broke it. It broke and I can’t fix it.”
The blonde was alarmed. Had his panther been more seriously injured than at a first thought. Instantly he began running his hands over his love. However, when he met confused green eyes, Draco stopped. Harry reached into his sweater, pulling out a shattered glass box, the rose inside no longer glowing with changing colors. The blonde sighed in relief.
“It’s fine, Harry. I didn’t know you even still had that,” Draco said, taking the remains.
“It’s not okay. I always take it on missions with me, to help remind me of you. It keeps away the darkness when you’re not there,” Harry said, panic rising his throat.
Draco pulled him into his arms. “From now on, I’ll always be here to keep away the darkness. You have nothing to fear.”
Harry allowed himself to be lead into the bedroom, but not before looking back at his beloved treasure. He smiled when he saw the light from the fire reflecting on it, making it seem like it was glowing, noticing that it had somehow ended up next to a familiar photo album. Even if he no longer had his treasure, Harry realized that he still had his dragon, the reason his darkness had fled in the first place.
******************
Sitting at the table with the large Weasley family, Harry smiled faintly at the prank George had played on Percy. It was almost time for the dessert to be served, and there was still no sign of Draco. With each passing minute, Harry felt his hope dwindle. Just as he was about to excuse himself from the dessert and take his leave, the door opened to reveal his blonde light.
After being fed several servings, they all moved to the living room, Draco looking full. They sat there for hours, telling stories and laughing. Green eyes caught passionate silver ones and he understood. Standing, Harry cleared his throat, effectively getting everyone’s attention.
“I have an announcement. I’m engaged to Draco, we’re getting married,” Harry said, feeling a cool hand catch his, squeezing it.
The stillness continued for a long moment before the room burst out into cheers. As the night progressed and they all incessantly toasted the new couple, Harry slipped out, his head a bit woozy from the first taste of alcohol in almost a year. Looking up at the stars, he remembered just how bad he used to be before his accident, before Draco. When Ron joined him, they stood there in comfortable silence for a while longer.
“I’m glad for you, mate,” Ron said, breaking the quiet first.
“Really?” Harry asked, turning to look at him.
“Yeah, mate. I can see how happy he makes you. That’s all that really matters. Besides, he’s not that bad once he drops that snobby attitude of his. Not that I’d ever go for him, no offence, but I’m not into blokes, you know?” Ron said.
Harry laughed. “I’m sure Hermione’s thankful for that.”
“So, I’m going to be your best man, right?” Ron asked.
“Of course, who else would I ask? No one but you could possibly be my best man,” Harry said.
“Just don’t let him get you in a dress,” Ron joked.
This time they both laughed.
“So, this is where you were. You’re not trying to talk him out of marrying, are you Weasley?” Draco’s voice came from behind them.
Harry turned to see the blonde, his pale cheeks were flushed, either from the alcohol or the cold, perhaps even both. When Draco nearly stumbled Harry figured it was more alcohol than anything.
“Come on, let’s get you home,” Harry said, giving him a big smile.
A quick trip inside for cloaks and goodbyes said; them with lots of leftovers in hand. Harry Apparated them outside the Malfoy gates; and a quick, (although shaky) walk saw them to the door. Once there, Draco grabbed the back of Harry’s cloak.
“You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to,” Draco said.
“You’re drunk, Draco. Get inside before you catch your death,” Harry smiled, only slightly buzzed having learned his lesson.
“You don’t have to go home alone. I don’t want the darkness to get you,” Draco said, pulling Harry closer.
“Ever since you came into my life, my world hasn’t been as dark. I haven’t been alone since the day you proposed to me. I’ll survive on my own for a little bit longer. Then once we’re married, I know everything will be all right,” Harry said, letting Draco kiss him.
Once Draco was in the capable hands of his house elf, Harry left for Grimmauld Place, relieved when he finally made it to his bed. Turning on his side, he watched the Christmas gift he received not more than twenty-four hours ago. With thoughts of Draco on his mind, Harry drifted off into a light filled dream, as a fresh blanket of snow fell from the sky.
