NEED

.....run run dodge duck..swerve..TREE!..dodge..leaf litter skittering under racing paws.. the night flashes past in hues of silvered gray and drenched black..run damnit..RUN!! don't stop, don't look back!...

A long howl tears the night..breath builds in tight paniced bursts past gaping jaws....He's gaining..
Paws falter, the air too thick to gain a purchase in labored lungs..THERE! a scent.. find it follow..
the howling takes on a predatory snarl as the massive black dog burst through the heavy brush and into a clearing.

The night was dying, but still clung stubbornly on, refusing to allow the light of dawn to break free. As the shaggy creature burst through the screening, a tall form in black spun, his arm out thrust and with a snarling of his own..growled out.."Stupify!"

The canine missed, but the blast wasn't meant for him, only for the nightmarish creature that followed hot on the exhausted dogs tail..

A werewolf..in full pursuit.. the blast caught it full in the chest and knocked it back past the line of sight as the man in black approached the shuddering for of the ragged man rising from the canine form..

"Damn you Black, you knew better than to risk releasing him.I should leave you to be torn to ribbons and your death on the concious of your flea bitten paramour!"

Shuddering, Sirius Black rose to unsteady feet, exhausted past the limits of endurance, panting still as he made to grab for Snapes raised arm.."We can't leave him like this Severus..PLEASE, he is all I have left.."

"and this is important to ME in what way" the venom from the Potions Master voice could wither the smallest hopes that Black had harbored...

For a lifetime, Remus Lupin has suffered and fought. The beast within him growing stronger with each passing year, and only the Potions Masters abilities had kept his sanity intact.. but over time, the wolfsbane potion had to be strengthened and concentrated as the beast within and the frail body built up a resistance. Over time the quiet and almost apologetic man had grown..sharp and vicious, even foul in his personal views to the point that he had been abandoned by all, except the one man that could never walk away..and of course, by the potions Master himself. Why did Severus continue to work to find a cure? Perhaps it was out of his own need to prove he alone could truly bottle glory and stopper death.

A low growl spun both men from their conflict, just as the beastial form erupted from the trees.. As one they cast hews and curses, but the creature had a firm grip on the unwilling mind, and it KNEW.. it dodged and avoided, impossiably quick as it lunged and clawed at the pair. Years of acting as a double agent had given Snape the reflexes of a cat, but Black was exhausted and his own reaction time was dulled, with a snarled curse, the man in black threw himself into the wavering body of Sirius Black, and the beast pounced. Ripping at the heavy robes as Severus and Sirius tried to roll free of each other and part. all the better to attempt an advantage on the slavering creature..

"Just...hang ..on...dawn"..panting all but incoherant , Sirius ducked again as the werewolf slung a menacing clawed paw towards his belly.

But Severus was staggering , blood drenching the back of his ruined robes..clawed in the foolish attempt to shield Sirius from the beasts attack.."Kill him Black, let him free, he has begged for us to do so , he has reached the point where he cannot be trusted"

Rising to his full height his wand at the ready, Severus cut a glowing slash in the lightening air.."AVA!!..."

"NOOOO!!!!".. Black launched himself, spring past the beast to tackled the injured Snape and bring him to the ground.. just as the first fingers of dawn broke free of the night, and the beast HOWLED!! staggering,, shuddering, and shrunk, the hide peeling away, transforming and returning to the haunted man that stared in shock.."Why?.. Sirius.. why didnt you let him finish?"

Heartbroken as he watched his oldest friend waver.. then fall, crashing down over he and Snape on the bloodied forest floor, Sirius could hear the urgent cries and shouts from the Auror team that had been tracking them..and knew that it would be prison or death for Remus..There was no turning back, the beast had won..

Clutching Remus to him with one arm and grabbing Severus arm with the other, his mind reeling as he sought to apperate..but where?.."Somewhere..safe.. help.. we need..."

An explosive CRACK! and the three were gone..... but with no true destinaion in mind..only Merlin knew where they would be found.

Authors note, this is the beginning, something that has been fermenting in my mind for a month now, forgive me if it is not overly long, but I needed to set the stage, as this is but the prelude of what is to come, and please, as I am new to this, comments will be appreciated, I am used to being the comic relief, and this is tuned to be much deeper than a mere belly laugh
