A/N: Hi all, me again! Now I’m not
expecting a lot of hits on this as it’s mainly tying up some loose ends from
what has turned into a Ron/Severus saga which you’ll need to read from the
beginning to understand it all (though, welcome and *waves* if you just want
some ‘we’re on holiday, yay!’ smut, of which there is plenty once you get past the first chapter). *EDIT: You may have seen a naughty message here saying my muses had dried up. That was a blatant lie inserted by Severus trying to make sure he never has to go to the beach again. Normal service will resume in the guise of smutty oneshots.* I’m open to
challenges and/or requests though, from you lovely fans of mine, if you want me
to have a go at anything!
A massive thank you to the following
people: Davinci, abbicee, talley, yaoi_addict and my one anon reviewer. Your
reviews and following really did mean the world to me. (Though I’m going to be
cheeky now and ask why you all neglected the pre-cursor, January… do you all
really like Ron and Severus that much you’re exclusive to them?! *grin*) I have tried to expand on things you've said you liked within the five other stories. I hope you like this one.
So here you go. And yes, if anyone
recognises it, Severus *is* quoting directly from Terence Stamp’s character in
‘Priscilla: Queen of the Desert’. ;-) And boy, have I had to fight with Severus in this story. He didn't want to do it. I made him. We had a bit of a to-do.
----------------------------
Severus was
sat reading the newspaper when the doorbell rang. Not expecting anyone, he
grumbled all the way to the door, hearing the strains of a guitar floating down
from the tiny loft.
They had
found themselves in early June before they’d really known where the year was
going. He and Ron had moved into their new house in February, Ron had turned
nineteen in March (the guitar had been Severus’ present), then April and May
had been a blur of Remus and Tonks’ baby being born, Harry and Ginny getting
engaged, his and Ron’s anniversary of getting together and then there they
were, in June.
He pulled
back the old stable style door and was surprised to see Remus standing there
holding his son. It was warm out, the sky was blue and the sun was still
burning away in the sky. Severus liked his early retirement much more than he
let on.
“What have
you done now?” Severus stood back to admit them and raised his eyebrows.
“I haven’t done anything,” Remus rolled his eyes. “She got called into work
again.”
“Ah, so you
fell out then.” Severus shut the door and reached out to take Teddy off Remus
so he could shrug out of his coat.
Severus
wasn’t sure at which point he’d made the jump into being able to stomach babies
near his person, or when he’d become more natural with them, but it had
obviously happened. He bought the two month old close to his chest and smiled
into his face. I still expect you to cry
every time I do that. “Christ what are you feeding him, he’s growing like
mad?”
Remus turned
and hung his coat up by the door and extended his arms for the baby back.
“I can hold
the baby for more than two seconds, Remus,” Severus narrowed his eyes. “I’m
getting quite good at this whole nurturing thing.”
Remus
grinned at him. “Where’s Ron?”
“In the
loft murdering more classic music,” Severus turned and led the way into their
kitchen, surprisingly big for the nature of the house.
And he
loved his new house more than he ever thought he could love another building
other than Hogwarts. Ron had certainly struck gold when he’d bought it when
Severus was stuck in Azkaban. It was a two-bedroom whitewashed cottage, with
tiled roof, original stable front and back doors, two bathrooms, a decent sized
living room and kitchen and a cellar. And a dirty great field as their garden.
“Where’s George?” Remus looked out of the open back door.
“Upstairs with Ron. I swear he never leaves his bloody side.”
“How’s he
going to handle you two going on holiday tomorrow?”
“Same as
me, I expect,” Severus shifted Teddy to his other hip. “Spend the whole time
brooding about normality.”
“I thought
going on holiday was your idea?” Remus turned with a smile.
“It was.
But… you know… my idea of a holiday isn’t really Ron’s.”
“And so
that was how you let yourself be talked into camping.”
“Yup.”
“You hate
camping.”
“I know.”
“Then why
are you doing it?”
“To make
him happy,” Severus watched as Teddy’s hair changed a fetching shade of
bubblegum pink. “That skill is going to be so great when he’s a teenager, he’ll
be able to change how he looks all the time. Wish I’d had that.”
“There was
nothing wrong with you as a teenager,” Remus snorted, and finally tugged his
baby back off Severus to sit down at the kitchen table. “You’re a pretty
rubbish host as an adult, though. We came for tea and sympathy.”
Severus
rolled his eyes and turned to put the kettle on to boil.
“So do you want talk about your argument or are you just going to brood on it
like usual?”
“It’s the
same old same old… she’s working herself into the ground to bring money in and
she should be spending time with Teddy.”
Severus
summoned three mugs from the cupboard and replied, “Well… are you telling me
you’d be any different if you could go out and earn money?”
“No,” Remus
kissed the top of his son’s head. “I wouldn’t be.”
“Then stop
bloody blaming yourself for everything,” Severus looked out of the window. “I’m
not going to lecture you again, Remus, but you need to let it go.”
“Oh really?
Says the man who doesn’t even like his husband paying for
dinner once in a while.”
“That’s
different.”
“It bloody
is not.”
“Maybe it’s
just a generational thing, then.”
“Maybe it’s
just an ‘us’ thing, Sev,” Remus laughed, accepting his mug of tea.
“Possibly,”
Severus conceded, also sitting down.
He heard
scramble on the ceiling above him and then bounding paws in the hallway. Ron
had to levitate the dog up and down into the loft because there were no stairs
and as intelligent as George was for a seven and a half month old dog, a ladder
was never going to cut it.
“Crazy damn
animal,” he heard Ron mutter as he moved towards them in the kitchen. “Hey, Remus!”
Severus
watched in amusement as Teddy’s hair changed to match Ron’s own and he gurgled
and threw his arms out happily, narrowly missing Remus’ face by inches. With a
grin Ron picked him up with a slight groan. “Hey, Teddy!
Life treating you good?”
The baby
gave another gurgle and Ron smiled before walking to lean against the worktop,
jutting out his hip to rest Teddy on it. “Merlin he’s growing fast, Remus.”
“He got my
appetite,” Remus took a sip of tea.
“Is that
your backhanded way of saying you’d like feeding?” Ron raised an eyebrow with a
smile.
“You are so like your mother,” Remus shook his
head. “But yeah, if you’ve got food going I’m not going to say no.”
“I need to
eat before I go out anyway,” Ron shrugged. “You’re welcome to stay. Tonks at work again?” He asked sympathetically.
Remus
nodded but didn’t say anything.
“Ohhh Teddy
you need to grow up a bit,” Ron jiggled the baby and spoke into his face. “So
you can slap some sense into your dad. Yes. What I wouldn’t have given for a
stay at home dad over my mum. I predict life would have been a lot easier, yes,
yes I do.”
Severus
laughed and even Remus managed to crack a smile. “He’ll run rings around me,”
he yawned.
Ron grinned as he handed the baby back with another ‘oomph’ sound which made
Severus worry. It’s nearly a bloody year
since you were injured and you’re still in pain. But whenever he raised the
subject with Ron he got told to shut up. Ron’s face had grown up so much over the
last year it was incredible to see. He was still a teenager but no longer
looked young-faced. Severus realised he was staring and switched his gaze to
his tea.
“So are you
all packed up for your holiday?” Remus asked Ron interestedly.
Ron stared with a grin on his face. “Come on, Remus. You’ve come to know me
better than that, surely? I’ll do it in the morning.”
“Or I’ll do
it tonight,” Severus rolled his eyes and reached out a hand to pull Ron over to
him, hand sliding round the trim waist protectively.
“Yes, or, my personal organiser will do it this
evening,” Ron sank a hand into Severus’ hair.
Despite the
history between the two older men at the table, Ron liked Remus’ company,
because he never had to hold back physically with Severus in front of him,
unlike with his family, or Eileen. Not that Eileen tended to bother them much;
she was the quietest ghost Ron thought might be in existence. But then hiding
for twenty years would probably do that to anyone. Ron sank down and sat on
Severus’ knees at the table causing Teddy to giggle.
“I still
don’t know what to think when he does that,” Ron laughed. “Laughing
at the two of us together. He’s what, three months old, should he even
have laughing down yet? Damn magical advancement…”
“Yeah, it
does happen alarmingly frequently,” Remus kissed his son’s head again with a
smile. “Maybe it’s taking him time to get used to it like it did the rest of
us.”
“Almost as
much time as it took me to get used to you being straight,” Severus countered
with a raised eyebrow.
“Well
miracles happen,” Remus grinned, watching as Teddy curled his fingers around
his little finger in a fist.
“Divine
intervention, more like,” Severus muttered into his mug and Ron laughed.
The moment
was interrupted by a loud squawking from the garden and Ron leapt up. “GEORGE!
If that’s you near the bloody chickens again I’m going to do my nut!”
He
disappeared out of the back door leaving Remus staring bemusedly at Severus.
“He is so very much like Molly.”
“I know,
it’s quite terrifying how much alike they are sometimes,” Severus shook his
head and blinked, as Ron came back in the door, herding a chastened looking
George in front of him.
Teddy
giggled at the loping dog, waving his fist lightly in the air.
“Don’t kiss
the dog,” Ron said sheepishly, throwing a dirty look at George. “Disgusting creature. Nooo don’t go in there and wipe your
face up the fucking sofa, come here!”
He stamped through into the living room, chasing the dog.
“You know I
have to say, right now, the baby’s looking easier,” Severus grinned.
“You two
have such a great life together,” Remus laughed and looked about their kitchen.
There was a
crash from the living room and Severus winced. “You say that but I’d say my
risk of injury is up by fifty percent and there’s a lot more arguing.”
“Being
clumsy is not an affliction I can rid myself of,” Ron re-appeared in the
kitchen holding a broken photo frame. “Sorry. We had a slight altercation
whilst I tried to save the sofa.”
“Well fix
it then,” Severus frowned at him.
“Nuh-uh.
You’re meant to be practising your magic with your left hand,” Ron thrust the
cracked glass frame at him.
As militant as your bloody mother
when you get your claws in something, too. “Fine.
I’ll do it later.”
“I’m glad
he’s looking after you,” Remus said quietly, finishing his tea as Ron turned
back into the living room. “Someone’s got to.”
“I can look
after myself just fine,” Severus said irritably, but internally, he was glad
Ron was there to look after him too.
Because the
magic in his wand hand had never completely been the same since Bellatrix
Lestrange had tried to chop his arm off, and as much as Severus hated to admit
it, he did need help around the house, and whilst he brewed. And it kept Ron in
such close proximity to him they were always with each other. He liked that
side of his injury very much. Since he’d been to Azkaban in January, they were
much, much closer, though neither of them had thought that possible beforehand.
As the object of his affection came back into the room again, the afternoon sunlight
catching his face and smile, Severus felt decidedly gooey inside.
Ron walked
to the sink and washed his hands, looking out over the field which was their
garden. He loved the house he’d bought. It instantly felt like home, the minute
he had stepped through the door with the Ministry housing agent. The fact that
it was a wizarding sale made everything so much easier for him, because the
house already had protection and magical appliances. It had belonged to a
little old witch who couldn’t live by herself any longer at 132 and sold the
house to move in with her daughter. It also helped that she’d seen his face in
the paper a few days before and was disgusted with the verdict that had sent
Severus to Azkaban. He’d been a bit surprised by that, considering her age and
how very unconventional he and Severus were, but she had told him with a smile
that at 132 there wasn’t much that could shock her any more. He looked dreamily
out towards the coast. He loved the view.
“Earth to Ron,” Severus jabbed him hard in the ribs.
“What?” He
didn’t turn around.
“What time are you going out tonight?”
“Six,” Ron
glanced at the clock. “I’ll get dinner on.”
“I wasn’t
hinting,” Severus said gently. “Just wanted to know.”
“I won’t be
out long. Just Dean, Neville and Seamus are really looking forward to their
housewarming party now they’ve actually found someone stupid enough to rent to
three nineteen year olds.”
“I happen
to know that some nineteen year olds are incredibly responsible,” Severus
smirked at Remus.
“Yeah well,
Seamus Finnegan ain’t one of us,” Ron grinned, opening the fridge and tapping
his fingers on the door. “Two weeks, I give them, before Neville ups and leaves
with an anxiety disorder.”
“I think
Neville’ll just be glad to get out of the same house as his grandmother,” Remus
picked some fluff off Teddy’s onesie.
Ron snorted
as he did whenever Neville’s grandmother was mentioned, it reminded him of
boggarts, dresses and his husband.
“Shut up,” Severus scowled at his back.
Ron laughed properly then. “I’m sorry… but you were such a shit to Neville you
deserved it. I for one found it greatly amusing.”
“And I may
have had a giggle or two…” Remus said airily.
“This is
called ganging up on somebody,” Severus got to his feet, looking for a way to
change the conversation. “Remus, I’ve got something to show you, in the shed.”
Ron turned
and held his arms out for Teddy. “You’ll want your hands for this.”
“Severus,
I’m a married man, and so are you!” Remus grinned and Ron snorted again.
Severus led
the way outside to the hot garden, and pulled open the door to the magically
enlarged shed. Remus looked at him, obviously confused.
“I’ve been
working on this when I can, but I’ve not been going as fast as I could have
done with my arm. I don’t know… if you want it. Arthur had it at first, he
asked Dumbledore for it, but he was pulling it apart and,” Severus visibly
shuddered, “That was just an abomination to engineering.” He reached out and
tugged off the dust sheet.
“Oh my
God,” Remus’ mouth fell open as he saw the bike properly.
“I couldn’t
leave it with Arthur,” Severus ran his hand over the leather seat. “He was
butchering it. And it was always so beautiful.”
Remus
walked round to look at the bike from the front. “He’d be thrilled. He loved
this bike.”
Severus
didn’t miss the emotion in Remus’ tone.
“I’m nearly
done fixing it, I think,” Severus stood back and folded his arms over his
chest. “If you want it, it’s yours.”
“I have nowhere to keep it,” Remus shook his head sadly. “Do you mind if it
stays?”
“Only from
the point of view that Ron keeps threatening to learn how to drive it,” Severus
said worriedly. “And he can barely stay on his own two feet, let alone on two
bloody wheels.”
“He’d look
great on it, though,” Remus managed to smile. “I think I’ve still got Sirius’
old leather biker stuff for it somewhere.”
“Don’t
encourage him, please,” Severus hissed, though half-heartedly. The thought of him in leather trousers is
too good to pass up on.
“It might
as well go to good use,” Remus smirked. “Though what Sirius’d say about it
going to your husband, I don’t know.”
“I’d
imagine Sirius is spitting merrily about the way everything’s worked out,
Remus, wherever he is.”
“Probably,”
Remus smoothed his hand over the leather seat.
“Do you
want some time alone?” Severus edged towards the door.
Remus
didn’t answer, he didn’t have to.
Feeling
gloomy for his friend, Severus walked back into the house to find Ron cuddling
Teddy at the kitchen table. “Were there tears?” Ron asked.
“I think
there were when I left,” Severus sighed and walked over to lean down and wrap
his arms around Ron where he sat, placing a kiss on his hair. “I don’t know
whether I did the right thing or not.”
Ron leant
back into his embrace. “It was never going to be easy. But it’s done now. You
couldn’t hide it forever.”
They heard
a shout from the shed, calling for Ron. Raising his eyebrows with a shrug, Ron
handed Teddy over to Severus and stepped into the sun.
“Remus?”
Ron peered into the shed.
“Come
here,” Remus was sat on the motorbike, face completely dry, Ron was relieved to
see. “I bet Severus hasn’t even shown you how to start this thing up?”
Ron looked
shiftily back to the house. “No, he hasn’t. But I sort of know.”
A grin
spread over Remus’ face. “Thought you might. It’s a
pig of a thing though, right?”
“I nearly
broke my hand trying to turn it in time,” Ron whispered, with another nervous
glance towards the house.
“I never
drove it much. Sirius did teach me but I was never any good at it. It was his
status symbol anyway, not mine,” Remus shrugged.
“Harry doesn’t want it,” Ron reached out a hand to caress the handles. “My dad
offered it when he first got hold of it but Harry said no. Severus rescued it.
But now if you don’t want it, it’s just going to sit here.”
“Not if you
learn to ride it,” Remus hopped off the bike with startling agility. “Hey,
don’t look so surprised. I was nineteen and on this bike for hours at a time
once, you know.”
Ron grinned
and swung his long leg over the seat Remus had just vacated.
“Show me
how you were doing it,” Remus patted the handlebar.
“I was sort
of doing it this way,” Ron angled his wrist and imitating his movement.
“Sirius broke his wrist that way the second day he had this,” Remus was smiling
at the memory. “Cried like a baby. James was beside himself laughing.”
“So how should
I do it then?”
“It takes
some force, but you’ve got to kick, and at the same time don’t angle your wrist
out at all, keep your hands straight on the bars and flick the throttle forward
in time with your kick using your wrist.”
“Like
this?” Ron did as he described.
“Exactly
like that. Don’t tell Severus, but seeing you sit on it you’re clearly a
natural.”
Ron
grinned, pulled out his wand, opened the larger doors at the opposite end of
the shed, and pocketed it again.
“No, Ron, you’re going to get me in the doghouse,” Remus protested.
“I’m the
one on the bike, let him yell at me,” Ron shrugged, and with much more ease
than the few other times he’d tried, he kicked the pedal with his foot, flicked
his wrist and the handle forward and laughed as the bike roared to life with a
huge vibration beneath him. And then he released his grip on the break and
gently trundled out of the shed into the sunshine.
He tested
the speed gently and sped up, turning gently to go in a circle round the
garden. He was very tempted to whack the button which would make it fly, but he
caught sight of Severus with a face like thunder on the back doorstep, holding
George by the collar, and thought better of it. He wheeled closer and eased on
the brakes before putting his feet down and cutting the power.
“Remus!”
Severus shouted at the shed.
“He’s not
here,” came a laughing voice and Ron snorted.
Severus
released George who bounded over to inspect the cause of the racket and Ron
leant forward as if to hug the bike. “I won’t let you take it away from me,” he
pouted, sticking his lower lip out and turning puppy eyes on Severus.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Severus turned his head away purposefully. “You
don’t know how to ride it.”
“Well, duh,
I just did,” Ron rolled his eyes. “Didn’t kill myself.”
“Shockingly,”
Severus growled back.
“Oh come on, Severus, it’s just a bike,” Ron shrugged and climbed off it
gracefully.
“What
next?” Severus threw his hands up in the air. “First smoking, now the bike,
what’s coming next? Tattoos and a piercing?!”
“Now you’re sounding like Molly,” Remus said
sheepishly.
“This is all your bloody fault,” Severus turned on him. “Go and play
with your son whilst I shout at my husband.”
“Sorry Ron,
I tried,” Remus shrugged with a grin, and called George back into the house
with him.
“Come on,”
Ron ran his hand over the leather seat enticingly, before climbing back on and
patting the space in front of him. “You know you want to.”
Fucking bastard. Groaning, Severus climbed over the
bike and seated himself in front of Ron.
“See,
that’s not so bad, is it?” Ron crept his hands around
his torso and put his head on Severus’ shoulder, kissing his ear.
“I suppose
not,” Severus sighed, leaning back into Ron’s arms. “I think I’d prefer staying
stationary like this forever, though.”
“I’m not
complaining either,” Ron smoothed his hand down onto Severus’ thigh and gave a
little murmur of content. “Let me keep the bike and learn to ride it.”
“It’s not
really a case of ‘letting you’, is it? You want the bike, you’ll have the bike.”
“Yes, since
I started going out with you I seem to have developed a beautiful knack for
getting everything I want.” Ron laughed. “And then I married you and the deal
was done…” He absent-mindedly fingered his wedding ring.
“Are you
looking forward to tomorrow?” Severus asked him quietly.
“Yeah,” Ron’s tone conveyed the grin on his face. “I can’t wait; it’s going to
be really relaxing.”
“Because we
have such busy lives these days,” Severus teased.
“You know
what I mean,” Ron dropped his chin again and squeezed Severus tightly. “I love
you.”
“I love you
too.”
“Your
husband really is a brilliant cook,” Remus put his fork down gently. “You lucky sod.”
“I know,
Severus grinned. “Don’t know how I landed so well, to be honest.”
“He’s
special,” Remus shrugged. “I don’t think there’s anything else you can say.”
“Mmm,”
Severus reached up and raked a hand through his hair. “I know. I’m worried
though.”
“Well
there’s a shocker,” Remus raised his eyebrows.
“He’s still
in pain, and it’ll be a year in three months. Surely that’s not right?”
“He was
badly cursed and hurt, Severus… he’s lucky he’s only in pain.”
“I know it
could have been so much worse,” Severus got up and put the plates in the sink,
then peered over into the temporary cot where Teddy was napping. “I know he was
lucky. But he’s still hurting. Especially when he picks up the kids, I’ve
noticed.”
“Well
that’s got to be emotional trauma, too,” Remus swallowed. “Look, I’ve got to
go. Dora’ll probably be back soon and she’ll be mad if she finds I spent the
afternoon here and not doing the washing and cleaning.”
“House-husband,”
Severus smirked.
“Retired-at-the-age-of-forty,”
Remus shot back, and bent to pick his son up gently, who didn’t even wake up.
“Thanks for this afternoon. I really, really needed the company.”
Severus
shrugged and smiled slightly.
“I’m going
to miss you for the next week,” Remus looked at him a little desperately.
“Surely you’ve got better company than me?” Severus raised an eyebrow.
“Oh I’ve
got plenty of company, but to be honest, you and Ron are the only ones who I
actually want to be around other than my wife, who’s continually locked up in
the Ministry working,” Severus saw the way Remus held Teddy to him a little
more tightly.
“Is everything… alright, Remus?” he asked carefully.
“No. I’m
not sure it is,” Remus replied in a choked voice. “But now isn’t the time, I
have to go home… and pretend it is.”
“If you
need me during the next week, you know where you can find me.”
“Severus,
I’m not going to interrupt your holiday with Ron,” Remus shook his head.
“You know
where you can find us,” Severus repeated firmly.
When he was
gone, Severus exhaled and fell down onto the sofa next to George. “Oh Merlin,
George… Is everything that much
easier when you’re a dog? All you do is follow Ron around, get fed, terrorise
the chickens and sleep.”
Severus was
in bed, half-asleep when Ron arrived home. He crawled into bed with the grace
of an elephant, tired and, from the smell of his breath, pissed. But he didn’t
sound it when he spoke.
“I’m sorry
I was gone so long,” he leant over and placed a lengthy kiss on Severus’ lips.
“I know I said I wouldn’t be.”
“Not to
worry,” Severus murmured sleepily.
“I need to
talk to you about something,” Ron stroked the side of his face.
“Mmm?”
Severus could barely get the groan out.
“I’m not
sure how you’re going to react.”
But the
only answer Ron got was a gentle snore. “Fuck it.”
