There was no hope for it – the freak had to go.
With his latest freakishness infecting their home, it would only be a month before he’d be the death of them, Vernon knew it. The boy was always trouble, he’d known from the instant he’d been dropped off at their doorstep – even his own freaky people didn’t want him! How much evidence did they need to prove his worthlessness and the ugly truth?
Harry Potter was a danger to them all, and those…those…wizards had wanted him far, far away from them until they couldn’t ignore him any longer. It was the same as what Vernon and Petunia had done. They’d locked him away until they couldn’t ignore him anymore, and they tried to press upon the freak that he needed to pretend he didn’t exist in order to survive – no tears, no whining, and no complaints. It would be easier on him, they told him, if he made himself as inconspicuous as possible.
But this was the end of his rope, he decided as he glanced in the backseat of the car to where the boy sat, staring up at the sky with empty eyes. He’d made Dudley give the freak one of his black, too small hoodies and the boy swam in it. The hood was up, hiding the scar and the unruly hair that went everywhere. But he could see the splatters of blood on the pale cheeks, and the eyes –those freaky empty eyes – were haunted. The boy had come home from one of his trips into the park this summer, a vicious scratch along the curve of the back of his thigh. He’d claimed a leopard had scratched him, a black leopard from the woods in the darkness. Petunia had slapped him and disciplined him with the broom while Vernon had sat down with a look of fear on his face and fury in his heart. Not only did the boy have the nerve to be a freak with freaky powers…he’d been scratched by a wereleopard??
He wasn’t as knowledgeable as Petunia about that…Wizarding world, but he paid attention to the news; it had become a huge controversy in the United States about werecreatures and vampires and the like coming out and mingling with pure, honest, good human beings. It had been all over the news that the freaks that lived in Europe and the UK were going to come out and begin mingling too! He’d heard a bit about this man that had come to the U.K. and was an expert on things like the boy now. While Petunia had been screaming at the boy about his unnaturalness and freakish ways, locking him in his cupboard as punishment rather than Dudley’s spare room as was usual, Vernon had picked up the phone and had called a colleague at work who had been talking about going to the man’s lecture.
Once he’d gotten the pertinent information, he’d contacted the man’s secretary and had arranged a meeting. The boy, quite simply, had to go. So now, they were driving to the hotel that the man was residing at, so that he could turn custody of the freak over to him. He was an expert, so he’d know the best way to deal with the boy. Petunia had asked about that Fumblemore person from that freaky school the boy went to, but Vernon reasoned that since the boy would be a deadly danger to the family, and the expert would know exactly how to handle him, that the freak would be safer with him. Which suited them all just fine. Pulling into the hotel parking lot, he stared at the boy in the review mirror. The freak had his eyes closed against the lights of the parking lot, with his head leaning against the window, leaving dirty smudges.
Briefly, he wondered if they should have cleaned the boy up, and then dismissed the idea. He wanted the boy out, now; waiting the four days in order to meet with this expert bloke was hard enough. He hadn’t let the boy wash, and hadn’t let the boy bandage the wound yet – he wanted that expert to examine the bite and the like so that he could get a clear reading on the boy and his freakish ways. He didn’t want to tamper with evidence. He’d seen those police shows on the telly; he wasn’t stupid. Looking up, he saw that just outside the back door stood two men.
One was easily six feet tall, with well built muscles and shoulder length, white hair that was easy to pick out under the dim light. He wore a pair of denims and a button down shirt under a leather jacket and boots. He looked older, much older than the man beside him. The bloke beside him was short, about 5’4’’, with chin length brown hair and sunglasses on. He too wore denims, but he wore a tee-shirt with it and well-worn sneakers. He stood with his arms crossed over his chest, while the elder man seemed to be speaking to him.
“Get out, boy.” Vernon said, as he opened his own door and managed to heft himself out of the vehicle – with much rocking and swaying.
When he was finally out of the car, he grabbed the boy by his elbow and marched him towards the two men. Both of them stood rigidly at attention now, and Vernon paused as he could almost hear the grinding of teeth. But then the boy shifted in his grip and he tightened it, dragging the freak in their direction.
“Are you with-“
“Vernon Dursley?” Asked the elder of the two.
“Yes. I’m here about the boy.” Vernon said after glowering at being interrupted. He hated rudeness; the boy was beyond rude, and now he was going to be dealing with rude people to get rid of him. Just bloody wonderful.
“Do you have everything he asked for?” asked the younger bloke – he couldn’t have been older than 25, maybe 25 years old.
“I’ve got the papers right here; he said he knew people that could make this go away quickly?” Vernon asked, taking a fist full of rumpled papers out of his pocket.
“He does. Come in.” The white haired man said, and motioned ahead of them so he could walk with the boy.
“I hope your boss understands this all – I won’t have it in my house! It’s caused enough trouble as it is, and now with this!”
Throughout his muttered rant, he shook the boy’s arm roughly. So far into his ranting and raving, he didn’t hear the soft sounds of discomfort and didn’t feel the boy stumbling. He most certainly didn’t hear the soft, angered conversation behind him between the two men at his back. He just wanted to dump the freak and get on with his life. Then, they reached the door of this mysterious expert’s hotel room. 204 in metallic numbers on the off white door glinted in the dim hallway lights. The white haired man, whom Vernon realized hadn’t introduced himself or the bloke with him, knocked on the door and waited.
A soft command to enter reached his ears and the elder man opened the door to lead the way inside. Inside the spacious and well furnished hotel, sat a dark haired man who was eating a steal at the table provided by the hotel. The dark hair was still thick, but beginning to gray and lighten at the temples. When he looked up at the three men and one boy, Vernon almost took a step back. One eye was an almost yellow-green color, while the other was a light, almost gray color. With the motion of lifting his head, Vernon could see that he had claw marks on the side of his neck that looked much like the ones that the boy had on his back.
“Ah, Mr. Dursley.” Said the man, a strange sort of accent hitching on the vowels, making them sound rounder. “I must say I was surprised to receive your phone call. Are you quite certain that you wish to sign custody over to me of your nephew?”
“You’re the expert, here,” Vernon blustered, shaking the fist that held the papers clenched in his hand at the man. “I won’t have a vicious, mangy animal in my home to threaten my family.”
“And you’re certain he exhibited the symptoms we talked about.” The man asked, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms on his stomach.
Before he could open his mouth to reply, Vernon was interrupted by the white haired man.
“He’s a leopard. We can sense it.”
Glancing over his shoulder, Vernon noted that the younger man nodded emphatically to this statement. Frowning at that, and the statement the white haired man had made, he turned back towards the man of the hour. It was then that he noticed the way the boy was acting. He trembled in his grip, and acted as if he wanted to hit the ground on his knees. Vernon literally had to hold the boy up by his arm, which made the boy make soft sounds of pain and fear in his throat.
“Ahh…quite…” The dark haired man smiled, and Vernon noted that it didn’t look particularly friendly. “Well…we’ll just have to take him off of your hands now. Let us sing the papers and then move on with our lives then, shall we Mr. Dursley?”
“Q-quite…” Vernon said and finally dropped the boy’s arm.
The boy crumbled to the ground, huddling there and began to tremble as he hunched there. Frowning at the freak’s antics, he missed the pleased look on the dark haired man’s face, and the concerned looks on the other two blokes’ faces. Instead, the signing of custody of one Harry Potter went rather quickly and painlessly, and he watched as the white haired man literally picked the boy up and left the room once it was finalized.
“W…what did you say your name was, again?” Vernon asked, turning back to the man.
“My name? Oh yes. My name is Orlando King.”
One Month and Three Weeks Later
“----on Dursley was found deep within the woods outside of the local park near his home. The body was mutilated and torn apart with only the teeth left as identifying markers of the missing father of one Dudley Dursley, and husband of Petunia Dursley. He’d been missing for approximately two months before the body had been found. Mr. Dursley had been actively searching for his missing nephew after it had been brought to the attention of the family and local police that the boy had run away. The death has been ruled an accident, and the animals that were attributed to the murder have been put down. The Dursley family has declined to comment, and a memorial ceremony has been scheduled to be held within the week and the search for their nephew has been called off.
“In other news, the regulation of lycanthropes within certain fields of occupation is still under hot debate after the latest string of outbreaks among young adults and teenagers. It’s still undecided whether lycanthropes should be able to have positions of authority over young adults and children due to the risk of-“
With a click the television was turned off, and in the reflection of the glass, a pale faced Hermione Granger stared in horror at the news of the Dursleys…and the fate of her best friend Harry Potter.
And then the owls came…
