"You've already checked that one."
Draco clenched his teeth, once again mentally repeating his list of reasons why strangling Pansy with his bare hands would be bad. The arguments were becoming less and less convincing.
"Draco."
"Pansy," his voice cracked as he mimicked her whining tone.
"I really don't like you using spells on my potion ingredients."
Reason number 12, if he lost this job the ministry would assign him one, and it would probably involve cleaning up after animals at the wizard zoo. "It's fine."
"But doesn't it..." she waved her hand in circles searchingly,"mess them up or something?"
Reason number 13, she was the only friend he had not currently in Azkaban.
"I'm not explaining this again," he mumbled."Reveal."
It was true for most spells, but not this one. The magic didn't lie in the wording of the spell. Any idiot could point their wand at something and say 'reveal'. No, for months Draco had studied about the gestural movements behind spells and how it effects them. He'd then spent an entire year perfecting the wrist movement with a precision swish and dip of the wand. Bottom line, it was a perfect spell.
Silence stretched out between them as he poured the nettles into his cauldron and started stirring. He listened to the various hisses of the potions, and the crackling of the small fires he'd lit underneath each active cauldron. These were the sounds of his life, a familiar ambiance in which he'd constantly been surrounded by for the past two years. Before Pansy had taken over this Apothecary, it had been her uncle's, but Draco had been here longer than her, therefore he should have more authority in the decision making.
She cleared her throat."After all this time, you still don't trust me?"
He spared her a frown."Let's not go through this again."
She huffed and crossed her arms, framing her magically enhanced chest. She had no practice in being subtitle, considering their ridiculous size. Anyone who looked at them and didnt think they were fake as hell was an idiot.
Before grabbing his stirring rod, he flicked his wrist and mumbled reveal again."If you want me to finish these potions before the next century, perhaps you should quit distracting me."
For a moment she paused, as if she wasn't quite ready to give up, but then as always he could see the resignation in her eyes. Yes, she probably believed that he was paranoid around her, and it probably hurt her in a way, but there was nothing he could do about it. He'd tried to explain it, but he couldn't flat out tell her everything.
"Fine. I'll be in the front," she huffed again.
The door was shut rather harshly. It was obvious shed been in a sour mood all day, no doubt since Blaise hadn't been by in a while. He could understand her loneliness.
"Reveal" he mumbled, flicking his wrist over the scurvy-grass before picking it up and adding it to the mix.
He started to reach for his stirring rod, but his fingers stopped short. He had just checked it, yes, but... he could already feel an uneasy itching in his throat. Casting the spell once more wouldn't hurt.
As his wand moved over the object, he clenched his teeth.
***
Three potions later, Draco was in the middle of checking over some of the long-brewing ones when he was once again interrupted by a very agitated looking Pansy. She tore through the door like a frightened cat and he barely had enough time to cast the revealing spell on her before she grabbed his upper arm.
"What is it?"
"Do me a favor," she said in what he recognized to be her' sweet' voice. It just sounded pitchy to him.
He raised his eyebrow questioningly, but when she continued to stand there with her hand on his arm and her bottom lip pouting, he prompted her with a"well?"
"There's a customer out there."
He waited for her to explain why the hell he should care, but she just stood there in silence.
"And?" he prompted.
"Go deal with him."
"No," he said glaring. It was an unspoken agreement that Draco would make the potions in the back while she dealt with the front. If she thought that was going to change now, she was so wrong. Draco didn't do crowds. Or people in general, it was too risky.
Biting her lip, she looked up from under her lashes in what was probably suppose to be a helpless looking plea, but really she just looked constipated. Blaise, it had to be Blaise. Maybe he had brought another girl in with him or something, the bastard. Who else would she run away from so scared?
Like he wanted to deal with the snob.
"Pansy, no."
"Please?"
"You're going to have to face him sooner or later."
Drawing her eyebrows together, she cocked her head, looking confused."Why would I ever have to face Potter?"
"Potter? As in Harry Savior of our arses Potter?"
When she nodded, he felt something... something nostalgic stirring in his chest. What the hell was Potter doing here? He gripped his wand tightly, feeling the grain of the wood pressing into his fingertips. Wouldn't he be married with a bunch of little ones running around by now?
He paused, meeting her pleading eyes briefly before sighing.
"Alright. I'll see what the git wants," he said, shaking off Pansy's attempted hug of gratitude along with her babbling of how she owes him one.
Pausing for a moment at the door, he stared at the wood, almost wishing he could look through it without anyone being able to see him. But, as his luck usually went, if there was such a spell he didn't know it. Casting a quick reveal on the doorknob, he summoned up his best sneer and turned it. When he entered the room Potter had his back to him, examining the spinning rack of every-day potions. He had become quite familiar with that back over the years, as much as it irked him, he'd seen it numerous times during Quidditch. Now, despite the baggy coat, or perhaps because of it, Potter's back looked significantly slimmer than he remembered. Potter had been scrawny back then, he'd always been a scrawny little thing, but had he lost even more weight?
Clearing his throat triggered Potter's notice of him, green eyes snapping to Draco, still covered by the ugliest plastic-rimmed glasses in existence. A flood of emotions bubbled up inside, emotions he'd never been able to place a proper name to, although annoyance was always quite prominent. How long had it been since he last felt them? How long had it been since he'd last seen Potter? Years. Three or four years. He grit his teeth, feeling resentful that Potter still had power over him, an ability to wake something up in Draco that he'd long since forgotten.
"Malfoy?" Potter said, squinting his eyes like an idiot.
"Potter?" he said in mock disbelief. Potter knitted his eyebrows together and frowned.
"Is this your Apothecary?"
Draco could feel the pull of the muscles on his face as he smirked. It wasn't something he had done in quite a while, but seeing Potter's dumbstruck expression was just so amusing he did it without thought."I make the potions, yes, but Pansy owns the place. You just missed her, I'm afraid. Running away from you in fear."
He thought he could hear a muffled curse from the back room, which only led to his smirk widening. Potter opened his mouth as if to say something, but then apparently changed his mind as he shook his head and turned his attention back to the slowly rotating potions rack, eyes moving quickly over the labels. The easy dismissal was rude and it bothered him a great deal, although Draco couldn't say why. Actually, what was he thinking? He didn't care, why should he? It was just Potter.
"What do you want?" he said, practically spitting the words. Not even a glance was spared.
"Dreamless Sleep," Harry said, bending his head to look at the lower level of the rack.
This gave Draco pause. Now that he looked past the ugly glasses, it was quite hard to miss the dark shadows under Potter's eyes. And, because of his expertise, he was also quite aware what the spider web-like markings at the top his cheeks meant. Potter had been abusing sleep potions.
"What's the matter, Potty? Having problems sleeping?"
The brunet gave him an incredulous of course I am look, and Draco tried not to show the blush of embarrassment he felt. No one in their right mind would fault Potter if he had trouble sleeping. Draco frowned; he used to be a master at Potter-taunting, but now he was just rusty. Pathetic. It was something he'd have to work on. Not that he planned to see a great deal of Potter after this.
"Do you have the Dreamless Sleep potions or not?"
"Maybe," he said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. He could see the muscles in Potter's jaw working, and it took quite a bit of will power not to snicker. Perhaps he was still good at taunting the git after all.
Then his smile vanished as Potter reached out, grabbing his forearm and growling. There was a prickle in his throat as he felt the magic burning into his arm. His stomach dropped.
Potter was cursing him.
Jerking his arm away, he flew a few steps backwards, distancing himself from the threat.
"Reveal!" he shouted, aiming the spell at the spot on his arm Potter had touched.
Nothing. It couldn't be nothing. He aimed towards his chest and tried again."Reveal."
"What the hell are you doing?" Potter asked, as if he didn't know.
"Curse- you've cursed me! What the hell was it!? Reveal."
The brunet rolled his eyes and grumbled something that sounded a lot like 'drama queen.
"Relax, I didn't curse you."
"Like hell you didn't, I felt it!" The prickling in his throat grew worse, feeling as if he was swallowing a mouthful of needles. Reveal."
"It's my protection shield."
Again, Potter grabbed his forearm, fingers digging in firmly, and Draco cried out in fear as he felt the buzzing of magic against his skin. He raised his wand to Potter's chest, causing the other to jump back, alarm on his face while he reached behind him. Potter was half way to drawing his own wand when Draco landed his reveal spell. Magic crackled in the air, and curved gold squares started to appear around Potter, shimmering into a solid net-like shape around his entire body.
He'd been called the golden boy before, but this was ridiculous.
"What the hell?"
"Fuck Malfoy, do you think you could give not over-reacting a try sometime?"
"How are you doing that?" It wasn't like any shield he'd ever seen used before. Instead of looming out in front, it clung tightly to his body, covering every inch. The golden color reminded him of the Protego Horribilis, but the netting look to it meant it was either an alteration or another spell altogether.
"How?" he repeated, taking a step forward. The visibility of the shield was starting to wear off, shimmering out of sight.
Potter's jaw muscles were jumping again."Do you sell Dreamless Sleep potion or not?"
"Tell me how you're doing that."
For a moment, it looked as if Potter might throw a punch. The veins in his forearms were raised as he clenched his hand into a knuckle-white fist. Maybe he was thinking of it, but then he tilted his head in a pensive manner and crossed his arms. "I'll tell you after you sell me the potion."
Draco narrowed his eyes. Fuck no; Potter was not trying to play sneaky Slytherin all the sudden, was he? That was Draco's game."I'll sell it to you after you've told me."
Green eyes glared venomously."Never mind, I'll find someplace else."
"Potter," Draco said as the other started to turn. He took a few steps, doing his best to position himself between Potter and the door, but his elbow almost touched a shelf and in his attempt to avoid it he pressed himself against the brunet's side. There was a brief instance of magic buzzing where they touched, but Potter jumped back immediately, eyes narrowing.
Suddenly he found his lips felt extremely dry, and he licked them, trying to mentally shake off the sensation. Potter had been warm, and it had been a long time since he'd felt anyone pressed against his body like that. In fact, the last time, besides his parents, had been Potter, on that broom all those years ago.
Something knotted itself in his stomach, and he cringed at the feel.
"Let's just get this over with," he said, avoiding eye contact as he carefully made his way back behind the counter.
Potter followed him wordlessly, although his eyebrows remained in the permanent 'pissed off' expression, drawn together so that they wrinkled the skin in between.
The Apothecary's stock of dreamless sleep was actually quite extensive, Hogwarts demanded a large monthly supply which they were always more than prepared for, but considering Potter's apparent abuse of them Draco was hesitant to sell him much.
"How much do you want?"
"All that you have."
Words of a true addict. He cast a few quick reveals, ignoring the curious look he could see Potter shooting at him out of the corner of his eye, then pulled the two potions off the display shelf behind the counter. He paused before setting them down. How much did he want to sell Potter?"I'll see what we have in back."
Potter nodded, and Draco wanted to throw out an insult, because he didn't like the sudden change of behavior. They had been interacting a little too... companionably than his tastes preferred. Where was the fun in that?
In the stock room Pansy was sitting on a stool with her knee crossed over the other, foot shaking nervously in the air. She looked up when he entered, eyes wide and spine straight, but visibly relaxed when she saw who it was. Nodding his head once towards the door an indication that Potter was still out there he silently went over to the large box labeled D.S. He checked a number of them, then was careful not to let his fingers touch any others as he pulled them out. Five would be enough, in addition to the two in the front that would give Potter at minimum one week's worth. Potter really shouldn't take them every night, but Draco doubted he was going to persuade the idiot otherwise. Besides, what did he care if Potter poisoned himself?
Starting for the door, he heard Pansy squeak quietly. Glancing over, he saw her jump up, cringing as her high heel clicked against the concrete floor. She gestured towards the box while bouncing on the balls of her feet, but he shook his head no. He understood her thinking, the more they sold the annoying bastard, the less likely he would be back anytime soon, but she had dumped Potter on him, and he was going to deal with it how he wanted to.
Struggling momentarily with the door, he managed to check it and open it even with the potions in his hands. Potter had his elbows on the counter, palms rubbing his eyes as they simultaneously cradled his head. When he noticed Draco, he frowned and folded his arms underneath him, still leaning against the counter.
"Is that it?" He asked, jerking his head towards the pile.
Nodding, Draco glanced over to the register, but his throat prickled at the thought of having to touch all the keys, so he decided to ignore it."Fourteen galleons."
"Fourteen? That's ridiculous!"
"It's a complex potion, and its price respects that." Not to mention Draco was charging double a special price for annoying bastards.
Potter grasped at the counter for a moment, his knuckles white, and again Draco worried he might throw a punch, but again he didn't. Instead, Potter pulled a small leather sack out of his coat pocket and started counting, his hands shaking all the while, clinking the coins together. When he looked up, holding the currency in his out-stretched hand he was glaring, those dangerous green eyes focused completely on Draco.
The knot in his stomach tightened.
He looked down at Potter's outstretched hand and the large pile of coins barely contained within it, but his throat started to prickle. Part of him really wanted to reach out and take them, but the other part thought of the petrification curse, and how Potter's shield could easily shake it off him, but the moment Draco took it...
Apparently Potter got tired of holding the coins, because he slammed them suddenly onto the counter, the metal clanking against the smooth wood and Draco jumped at the sound.
"You're such a fucking prick," Potter mumbled, gathering up his potions. Draco panicked as he turned, and stumbled around the counter, trying to avoid touching anything.
"Wait!" he shouted, annoyed."You haven't told me how you do the shield yet.
The other seemed content on ignoring him, pacing quickly towards the exit.
"We had a deal," he snarled, and Potter paused with his hand on the doorknob. He turned his head, eyes narrowed.
"Fine. This," he said, gesturing at the length of his body."I don't know why it's there."
Draco opened his mouth to protest that Potter wasn't playing fair, but the other went on."It's wandless magic that I can't control."
He blinked. Wandless magic? Uncontrolled wandless magic. A lot of bloody good that would do him.
Frustration burned in his chest, and his feet where already moving him towards Potter while his hand clenched in a fist. He wanted to slap him for, even if for a brief instance, getting Draco's hopes up. But before he got his chance Potter was out the door, outside with all those people, and he stood frozen in the doorway, unable to move forward.
Story of his life.
*******
Draco woke to the feel of magic buzzing in him. Heartbeat knocking against his ribcage, his hands searched white sheets in a desperate attempt to find his wand. His lungs were turning into iron while panic scratched at his throat. The crackle of magic surrounded him someone had cursed him. He'd been cursed and his wand was gone. Every brush of fabric underneath his fingers was another curse; he could feel them, like fire rushing up his arms. Someone had laced his whole bed with them.
Fuck. Fuck.
He was going to die, or be forced to live a hundred in pain, or his brain was going to turn to mush. What where they, what curses were running through him?
He needed his wand, and they'd hid it from him.
Throwing off the covers completely, he tried to sit up, but his head spun and his body collapsed. Squeezing his eyes shut, he realized for the first time just how quick his breathing had gotten. If he couldn't calm down soon, he'd pass out, and now was not the time to hyperventilate, not when he didn't have his wand.
He tried again, pushing himself up with his shaking arms. Black dots danced at the corner of his vision and his throat began to prickle. He was going blind.
Fuck, where was it?
Ripping his sheets away, he nearly tipped over the edge of his bed, but his grasp on the headboard saved him.
Burning, more burning, so he let go because it was riddled with hexes as well.
Shifting onto his knees, he grabbed his pillow and threw it and there-
His wand.
Snatching it he shot the first spell as fast as he could, aiming for his chest.
"Reveal!" he shouted.
Nothing. But it couldn't be nothing, he felt the magic surging through his body.
"Reveal!"
Nothing. Nothing?
He tried the sheets.
Nothing.
He tried the bed's headboard.
Nothing.
But they were here. He knew they were. It had to have been an individual thread in the sheet that had been cursed.
"Reveal, reveal, reveal..."
*********
Pansy's lips pursed in a way that would make McGonagall proud. "You're five hours late. We're closing soon!"
Despite the fact that Draco's hands were still shaking, he was proud of his ability to smooth his face and raise an eyebrow to express just how much he didn't care. Stepping out of the floo he checked briefly to make sure a bench wasn't cursed before tossing his robe on it and rolling up his sleeves in an obvious dismissal. She, of course, just couldnt let it go.
"Where the hell were you? I'd given up on you coming in at all." Her foot tapped impatiently.
"I slept in," he lied smoothly without missing a beat.
"Slept in for five hours?"
"Yes."
Crossing her arms under her ridiculously large breasts did she think they looked natural that big? she studied him, her eyes slowly moving up and down his frame. Ignoring her, he cast a quick reveal on an empty caldron before spelling a fire under it.
"Do you think I'm an idiot?"
Draco gave her a sidelong glance, choosing not to answer.
"Don't be late again. Potter came in and I spent twenty minutes hiding behind the counter as the thick-skulled idiot called for you. Repetitively."
"Potter was here?" Calling for him?
Pansy blinked, then narrowed her eyes."Isn't that just what I said?"
"Is he coming back?"
Her fingers patted against her forearm for a moment as her lips drew back into that McGonagall-worthy purse."Do you want him to?"
Draco, who had buried his noise in a caldron for most of their conversation made the mistake of looking up. Pansy had that I've just figured out everything there is to know about you look in her eyes, and she was so wrong. How could she think he wanted to see Potter? The only reason he'd ever want to was to be able to torment the bastard.
"Right," he said sarcastically."You know how much I hate Harry I-have-a-hero-complex Potter."
He buried his noise back into the potion, stirring excessively slow, and therefore probably fucking it up, but he didn't want to face her, or her misguided conclusions right now.
Silence lasted for exactly forty-three extremely slow stirs, which turned the potion black instead of the copper color it was suppose to take. Yep he'd sure fucked that up. He could feel her eyes on him, boring into him, and she probably wanted to catch his gaze but he wasn't going to give her that satisfaction.
"If you say so," she said sweetly, and he could tell she was humoring him. Bitch.
"I'm thinking of leaving early," she went on, her voice taking its normal tone once again."It's been a while since I went over to Blaise's house and tried to hex him through the windows."
Draco turned his head away, refusing to find that humorous in any way. Blaise was absolute pants at warding his windows, and Pansy made sure to take advantage of that weakness whenever she saw fit.
"Do you think you could handle closing up?"
"Why can't you just close up early?"
She stretched her arms up above her head while breathing deeply, then pulled her wand from the loop on her skirt. He caught it too late that devious smile of hers, the brightness in her eyes. Then she said in the sweetest, singsong voice he'd ever heard."Because Potter's still out front. Ta!"
Before he could even curse, she was popping out of site. He remained quite, listening carefully for any noise from the other room, but none was forthcoming. Maybe Potter had already left.
What did he care? If the bastard was out there, then he could just stay out there until Draco was finished with his work. It was no skin off his back.
Damn, but he was curious now. He might try a detection spell, except he wasn't sure if it would bounce off Potter's shield or not, so that was rather pointless.
He could creak the door open a little, enough for a small peak. The chances that Potter would see him even if he was out there were slim, right? Unless he was just standing there, staring at the door like some creep. Draco whispered a reveal, checking the doorknob before quietly turning it.
Well fuck, there Potter was facing him, sitting on the blasted counter like the entitled git he was. He thought about slamming the door, but couldn't let Potter have the satisfaction of thinking him a coward, so instead he swung it wide open, acting as if that was his intention all along.
Potter hopped down with the grace of a walrus, catching his balance by grabbing the doorframe. This uncoordinated clod was the same git who beat him all those times in Quidditch? Hand still on the frame, Potter leaned in and all thoughts seemed to skid straight out of Draco's mind as he was forced into such close proximity. There was the familiar itching in his throat, but at the same time something else, something warm wriggled in his chest.
"What are you doing here?" he managed to say, wishing his voice had sounded snider.
"What do you think?"
Narrowing his eyes, he shifted a few inches back. Not a retreat, mind, his leg was just bothering him."You're here for more Dreamless sleep?"
"Yes."
He looked at Potter incredulously."Did you use it up already?"
Potter glared."Obviously."
"I gave you a weeks supply and it's hardly been three days." He'd suspected Potter was addicted to sleep potions, but he hadn't realized he was that addicted."Besides, we're out."
Potter moved to the left, looking over Draco's shoulder. He followed the line of sight, which of course was fixed on the damn box labeled D.S., not three feet from where they were standing. What the fuck, did Potter have hawk eyes or something?
"Look," Potter sighed."I don't want another lecture, I just want some more potion."
"Absolutely not," Draco growled."You're going to kill yourself."
"And why do you care?"
He felt a touch of heat to his cheeks, but covered it quickly with one of his iciest glares."Let's see, why wouldn't I want to be responsible for killing the Wizarding world's most lovable hero? That's a tough one."
"So you're not going to sell me any?" He glanced back at the box, and Draco rolled his eyes.
"Those are for Hogwarts. But by all means, if you feel selfish enough to deprive them, then why don't you take a few.
Potter's eyes narrowed minutely, and he looked as if he was actually debating on it. He turned away though, his mouth pouting just slightly, and he was reminded of a sulking child."You have plenty, I think you could sell me some," he mumbled.
"Is your plan to stay here and bug me until I do?" Draco moved into the workspace, Potter at his heels.
"Maybe it is."
For the briefest moment, he thought he could see something playful gleaming in Potter's eyes. That was ridiculous, of course, so he turned back to his work, casting a reveal spell before grabbing an empty vile.
"What's this?"
Draco finished carefully filling the small vile before looking over to see Potter bent over a cauldron."Don't touch that."
"Illegal potion?"
"Going to tattle? Run off to all your auror buddies?"
Potter rolled his eyes."Depends. How illegal?"
"About as illegal as Sectumsempra," he said, fingering his collar where there was still a very faint trace of a scar. Potter's cheeks flushed as his eyes turned downward. He shoved his hands in his pocket and remained blessedly quiet.
For a whole thirty seconds.
"What's it do?"
Draco sighed and refrained himself from raising his hands to rub at his temples. That had been his father's habit, and he wasn't feel very keen on picking it up."It's a reverse veritaserum. The drinker can only lie when they speak."
Frowning, Potter drew his eyebrows together and once again leaned over the pot."What's the point in that?"
In some ways, it was nice Potter was acting so... well not exactly friendly since he was clearly suspicious, but he wasn't accusing Draco of being up to something while he threw around a few hexes either. He sat down on a stool, only to jump in panic as he realized he hadn't checked it for a curse yet. He shot the reveal spell at it, thankfully showing nothing, then quickly cast it on himself with the same results. He could feel his heartbeat rumbling in his ears, but he hid any signs of frenzy panic by sneering at Potter's questioning look."A good Slytherin would know what to do with it."
Out of all the people in the world he didn't want to see him like this, Potter was number one on the list.
He didn't know why he wasn't just telling Potter to leave and come back later, he really should be saying that, but he didn't hate Potter's presence as much as he could have.
That is, until Potter knocked over a vile and it rolled towards his hand, almost touching him. He jumped back, his throat prickling painfully as it came to a stop next to his potion.
"Reveal," he barked, first at the vile then, just in case, at his chest.
"What's your problem?" Potter asked, eyebrows knitted together.
He turned, stomping his foot in anger."It could have been cursed."
Potter squinted his eyes and tilted his head, looking like a confused monkey.
"Why are you so afraid of curses?"
Draco snarled and turned away. Damn Potter and his stupid curiosity.
"Fine, don't tell me." He heard, Potter's voice taking on an aloof quality. What, now he didn't care all of a sudden? Draco could make him care.
"If you must know, I was in a front row seat to witness quite a few of them."
Potter looked at him, unimpressed."A lot of people were."
"Not like me. Aunt Bella use to invent them."
The brunet stiffened at the mention of her name, looking away with a face full of disgust for a moment before returning his focus on Draco. He thought, maybe, out of everyone, Potter could probably understand the levels of her insanity."She'd fuck with muggles for the fun of it. Took me along, too."
Clenching and unclenching his hands for a moment, he took a deep breath, feeling oddly... talkative. He hadn't told anyone about this. In fact, he'd kept it a secret from his mother all these years, something buried deep inside that he couldn't let out.
Potter cleared his throat, and Draco thought he might have hard a sorry somewhere in the gesture. He felt compelled to make Potter really understand how sorry he should feel.
"There was this one woman. Aunt Bella gave her husband a curse designed to react only when he showed a gesture of love. When he kissed her, she dropped to the floor, screaming as her insides liquefied." And his aunt had laughed, petting his hair while repeating watch Draco, watch in his ear.
"I'd rather avoid getting cursed like that." Hints the anxiety disorder. He frowned over to Potter, who would never have to worry about that again, as long as that shield of his was up.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with being careful," Potter said after a while with a shrug of his shoulders.
Draco would have snorted if his upbringing hadn't taught him to act more dignified."Careful. Right. You don't have to sugar coat it, I'm fucked up in the head."
Again, Potter shrugged."War does that to people."
Draco opened his mouth, ready to snarl that Potter had no idea, he hadn't lived with the Dark Lord and his followers all those months, but he stopped himself at the last minute.
Potter had faced him.
"What about hexes and curses being flung at you directly?"
Draco shrugged, wishing he didn't feel so damn self-conscious all of the sudden. He could never word it so others would understand. It made sense in his head, though. He just felt like he stood a fighting chance against them. No one could seem to see the difference, even if he could.
"I don't expect you to understand, no one ever does. They didn't have to watch a fellow death eater's bones turn to dust after they sat in a cursed chair. Do you know what a body looks like without a skeletal structure? Slumped into an unnatural pile on the floor, still alive? He was still moving for a while, trying to sit up because his lungs were..."
Draco shuttered. He didn't want to put it into words, he didn't want to remember, because he could taste vile in his mouth. When he had retched then, Aunt Bella cackled.
Silence stretched between them, filled only with the familiar hissing sounds the brewing potions made. The more time past, the more he felt uneasy.
"Look, Potter, I meant it when I said you were going to kill yourself."
The brunet rolled his eyes."I know what I'm doing."
"You ever try other things?"
Potter glared."I never thought of that. Wow Draco, you sure are one smart bloke."
He ignored the way his stomach flopped when Potter used his first name, and smirked."You're just now realizing this?"
Rolling his eyes again, Potter crossed his arms and sighed.
"I do have some tricks up my sleeve for insomnia, though," he said, casting another reveal before picking up the bottle of Devil's Shoestrings.
"And I should trust you why?"
"If I can't get you to fall asleep naturally, I'll give you a months worth of sleepless drought. Which would probably only last Potter for a week with as fast as he seemed to down them.
What was he doing? He didn't know, but he wanted to try and get Potter to stop using the potion. He'd think of a good enough reason to justify it to himself later.
Potter looked doubtful, his eyes narrowing, but they flicked over towards the box of Dreamless Sleep. Draco smirked, ignoring the strange twist he felt in his stomach. He was confident he could convince Potter by the end of the night.
He was excited for the challenge.
*****
"Relax," Draco murmured, enjoying the feel of Potter's warmth even through the fabric of his shirt."Keep counting."
They'd been at this for what he guessed to be about twenty minutes. It was a trick his mother had used with him when he was younger, having him lay on his stomach while she massaged his shoulders and back, making him count slowly in his head. He was quite enjoying the angles and curves of Potter's body, tracing his fingers along the spine and up his sides. Who would have thought he could find a back so touchable.
Potter rolled suddenly, nearly causing him to tip forward and land face first into the bed. He supported himself on his arms and looked up, glaring. Green eyes met his, slightly wide and very alert looking. He tried to shake his fringe out of his own eyes for a clearer look, but they wouldn't cooperate.
"Let's stop," Potter said, sounding as if he was pleading while snatching up his glasses and putting them on before Draco got a decent look.
Feeling slightly foolish for leaning over the bed in his current position, Draco repositioned his body so he could sit sideways on the edge."Why?"
"It's not working."
Draco scooted closer, bringing himself within inches of the slightly worried looking brunet.
"You're not giving it a" He was interrupted by the press of lips over his. His eyes widened as his heart sped to dangerous levels.
Potter pulled back faster than Draco could blink, his eyes wide and mouth parted. That mouth had just been on Draco's.
"Sorry- I shouldn't have done that," Potter said, shaking his head. He shifted in his seat, starting to get up.
No. Potter was not going to take that back damnit.
Draco wasn't entirely sure how he ended up in Potter's lap, snogging the wits out of him, but he did know that Potter seemed to be a fine kisser.
Spreading his knees so he could straddle Potter's waist, he used the height advantage to grip black strands of hair and force the other to tilt his head up. He took control of the kiss, opening his mouth wider so their tongues slid together, exploring, teasing. His right hand kept its grip in soft locks while the other traced Potter's sharp jaw and the curve of his neck. His breath hitched as he felt Potter's fingers slipping into the waist of his trousers, skimming the skin of his lower back.
Moving his hands down to the hem of Potter's own shirt, he didn't hesitate to pull up, breaking their kiss as he tugged the long-sleeve shirt up and over those messy locks of black hair. Once the fabric was tossed aside, he found Potter's glasses must have been taken with it because he was suddenly faced with the purest green eyes, darkened by their blown pupils.
Potter had never directed such an intense expression towards Draco before, and that was saying something. It was a heady feeling, having those poison green eyes fixed on him, glossy and bright with arousal. His hips rolled forward of their own accord, and he moaned at the feel of the hard cock brushing against his own, maddeningly separated by layers of fabric.
Desperate hands tried to work the buttons of his own shirt, a few popping off completely as it was tugged open and roughly dragged down his shoulders. He moved into Potter, feeling the warm brush of his chest, skin to skin. Their mouths met again, and Potter drew in a sharp breath as Draco snuck his hands between them, pressing his palms against pert nipples. He smirked into the kiss as he pinched the flesh, rolling it between his fingers and loving the way Potter moaned and arched his body into his own.
Moving his mouth lower, he licked his way across a shapely jaw, nibbling once before continuing to suck at the neck. Potter's moans sounded in his ears while vibrations teased his lips. He sucked hard, leaving his mark, and Potter moaned louder, a hand appearing at the back of his head, encouraging him. With one last swipe of his tongue, he pulled back to admire the darkened spot of skin.
Potter whimpered and twisted his body, trying to gain more contact. A shiver ran down his spine at the thought that Potter was underneath him, submitting to him, wanting him, aching for him. He rolled his hips, eliciting a gasp from Potter. His entire body was burning as he did it again, loving the feel of pleasurable sparks shooting in his groin at every slow thrust.
Potter's hands came up, fingers lacing in Draco's hair. He tilted his head, deepening their kiss and Potter responded by dragging his nails lightly across his scalp. It was only after he felt the chuckle against his lips that he realized he'd just groaned like a porn star. Feeling vindictive, he thrust his hips particularly hard, smirking as the chuckle turned into a moan.
"Malfoy," Potter said, voice husky. His hand reached between them and tugging at the front of Draco's trousers."We should take them off."
Rolling away, he couldn't agree more. There was a bit of desperation as he worked the fastenings, and Potter was probably feeling it as well. They both looked like fish flopping around out of the water as they bounced and wiggled on the bed, trying desperately to get out of their own trousers. Potter was free first, and he was ripping away the rest of Draco's before rolling over and straddling him in a reverse of their positions before. He narrowed his eyes a bit in displeasure, but forgot why he should care as he realized that a naked Harry Potter was currently on top of him. His gaze traveled over Potter's chest, scrawny but not without a small outline of muscles. He paused at the site of a pink nipple, wanting to sit up and lick it, but soon the path of dark hairs leading down to Potters very erect manhood distracted him.
His hands found their way onto Potter's hips, encouraging the other to scoot closer. Just a brush of their groins against each other was enough to make them moan in unison, and for Draco to decide that Potter had been on top of him long enough; it was time he took charge again. He rolled them, skillfully knocking Potter down while staking his claim as the straddler. When Potter looked up at him confused as if it was the biggest mystery in all the world as to how he ended up on his back, Draco chuckled and leaned in for another one of their slow kisses.
He began to move his hips again, this time at a faster pace. Potter's legs came up to lock around his, and suddenly the angle was incredible, causing their cocks to slide together in the most toe-curling way. Moaning, he moved his mouth down to suck at Potter's neck, tongue tracing his earlier mark.
Potter began to grunt, his hips thrusting up faster, messing up their rhythm."Close. Fuck so good."
Draco closed his eyes as their hips went wild, their slick cocks pressing together, dragging harden flesh against stomachs. Every muscle in his body stiffened, his abdomen clenching painfully, and then Potter's nails were digging into his back, and his whole body was blasted with intense pleasure as he felt hot liquid squirting between their stomachs. Potter arched his body, eyes rolling back in pleasure and Draco fought with all his might to keep his eyes open, to memorize that look of pure pleasure.
It seemed like the convulsing of their bodies would never end, but then Potter went slack under him, and Draco collapsed in a heap. Fuck, he'd never felt so good, so content, he almost wanted to sob. His arms wrapped around the body underneath his, clinging tightly, barely noticing the small buzzing from Potter's shield. He licked his lips, wanting to say something, something, but he didn't know what but then he heard a very quiet snore.
He was sleeping. After what had just happened, Potter was asleep.
Jerk.
Grumbling, he rolled to the side and frowned. He supposed he couldn't exactly blame Potter, but there was still that something inside his stomach, knotting itself tighter and tighter. The best thing to do was probably just leave and avoid any awkward morning moments. But...
Well, the way he saw it Potter owed him a re-do, one where he didn't pass out afterwards.
Yes, he decided that he could wait until morning. In the meantime, he'd let Potter sleep. He reached for his wand, intending to clean them up, when a jolt of fear spiked through his body. He didn't have his wand. He didn't even know where it was. The last time he'd remembered having it was long before he started massaging Potter earlier. His body shivered, and his throat prickled while thinking about everything he'd touched so carelessly.
But...
He managed to swallow, pushing back the panic. He was okay; he was with Potter after all. Looking at the edge of the bed, he saw the blanket folded there. Reaching out his hand, he swallowed again, forcing down that prickling in this throat as he grabbed it, fingers clutching tightly.
There. He was still okay. Still, he hurried to spread it out, laying it so it would rest on top of Potter and him, then pressed his body tightly against Potter's.
His heartbeat raced, but he squeezed his eyes shut and concentrated instead on the feel of Potter so intimately close to him. If he got up, he'd have to leave him. If he went to get his wand, he'd miss out on this, if even for a few moments. And Potter might wake, then it'd be Draco's fault that he couldn't sleep.
He pressed closer, concentrating on Potter's breathing.
