A/N: Another fic from the holiday rush. As I wrote
it a while ago, I may have forgotten a warning or two. If there is
anything that ought to be a warning and isn't, please let me know and
I will correct it – I am working from memory here.
Yes, I have a mailing list. To be added, email
ladyloire@yahoo.com. I will
not add blank emails – you must state (however briefly you see
fit and in whatever wording pleases you) that you would like to be
added. I will never spam you. You will only get updates about new
writing.

I.
Sunlight. He'd forgotten how bright it was. It had only been four
years, but the light reflecting off the mirror made Severus squint
and cast his gaze downward to the ends of his hair – grown well
past his shoulders now – and a stringy beard. “I would
like to shave,” he called out to the other side of a wispy
curtain as he pulled on aged black robes that also seemed to have
grown in the past years since the Battle of Hogwarts. 'Rather,
I've grown frail from four years of doing nothing,' he
thought.
He listened to the guard shuffling around outside the curtain and
some hushed whispers followed by a harsh, “Of course!”
that sounded like the man who was all but outright calling the guard
an idiot for questioning giving Snape his wand to make himself
presentable. He was a free man as of today, wasn't he? But Snape
couldn't help feel a little understanding. After years of rumors (and
no doubt very little actual fact), he would be hesitant to give him a
wand too.
His fingers curled around the aged wood, caressing the slight indent
that his thumb had worn into it over the past thirty years. Just
holding the wand almost made him feel like a wizard again, a feeling
that four years of Azkaban had all but beaten out of him. He wasn't
bitter about it. After all, he'd long since known that life wasn't
fair, and he had committed crimes which he had an obligation to pay
for.
But now that it was over, he didn't
know where the next chapter in his life ought to begin. He cast
several cutting charms to trim the bulk of the beard off before
carefully shaving the rest away. As to the spine-tickling length of
hair that dusted across the bottom of his shoulderblades, he would
have to do something about that later. 'After a few weeks
of full-course meals,' he
reminded himself. He'd always been thin, but this was overkill.
Actually, killing something to eat was not entirely out of the
question at the moment. It wasn't as if the prison had starved him,
but he would hardly call the meals appetizing. He knew there were
more important matters, but the first thing Severus planned to do
when he got home was order a large, hot meal. 'French
toast, bacon, eggs over easy, biscuits...anything Italian...'
The guard cleared his throat. “Uhm...Mr. Snape?”
Snape pushed back the curtain. A shower and shave almost made him
feel like a man again. It didn't, however, give him much confidence
in where his life would lead from here. He tucked his wand sharply
into his sleeve and enjoyed a mild satisfaction as the young guard
blinked owlishly at him. He arched his brow.
“Oh
uhm, yes. Here are the rest of your things, Mr. Snape.”
It was a modest showing – a sparse coin purse, a comb, and two
empty potion vials. He no longer remembered what had once been in
them but it didn't matter. Whatever it once was had long since
evaporated.
“Right,
well, your escort is waiting for you just outside. Er, Mr. Snape,
uhm...”
“An
Auror escort, I presume?” Snape interrupted. He didn't want to
hear the rest of the sentence. The idiot boy seemed ready to do
something pointless like apologize for things that weren't his fault,
when he knew nothing about the situation, or mention how heroic he'd
been in the Battle of Hogwarts, and really, all of that was utter
bullshit that Snape didn't want to hear. Four years was a long time,
but not nearly long enough to erase the past. There was still so much
he ought to be paying for, whether Harry Potter and his Mouseketeers
thought so or not. Someone
had
to pay for all that had come to pass. It was very nearly fate that it
ended up being him. It didn't even matter. 'It's
ironic, really. I've spent my entire life loathing my muggle half,
but Spinner's End is so far removed from the Wizarding World. That
will be a blessing now.'
