Chapter One
“Potter, you fool.”
The man’s words slip from his lips in a hoarse whisper though Harry is sure Snape would be screaming right now if he could. Glaring down at the weak man Harry sniffs in disdain before settling back on his heels, his back resting against the wall, his emerald green eyes never leaving Severus’ own.
“For saving your life I thought I’d at least get a ‘thank you.’”
“You fool. You silly silly little fool.” There is a pool of blood around Snape from the wounds he’d received from Nagini and Harry can see his chest rising and falling rapidly as each breath into his injured body breaths a bit more life into his slender limbs.
“I just saved your life Snape, that bite from Nagini would have killed you.”
“I know bloody well what you did and what you think you did.”
Harry rolls his eyes before waving his wand in a large arc, the healing spell leaving his lips without thought as he’s cast the thing more than enough times by now. “That should keep you until Poppy can see you. Are you feeling well enough to leave the Shrinking Shack? I can help you get back to Hogwarts and then once you’re well we can cancel this spell.”
“I was more than well before you arrived Potter, and feeling quiet well until, as always, you decide to play the bloody hero.”
Harry jumps to his feet, and leaning down he yanks Snape up as well, ignoring the almost inaudible groan the man makes as he leads him towards the boarded up entrance. “Well, you sound as joyful as always, well enough to walk I presume.”
Severus’ snorts in disdain as Harry unceremoniously drags him across the rotting wood of the floor. “The tunnel is a much quicker route to Hogwarts.”
“Yes but I don’t think you’re much in shape to be crawling through tunnels on your hands and knees.”
Snape makes a small sound of displeasure in the back of his through as Harry jerks his wand in a sharp movement that, not a second later, has the boarded up front door of the place blasting apart in a thousand little pieces of worn out wood. With his left arm wrapped around Severus’ waist Harry leads the man as quickly as he can to Aberfort’s house, intent on using the floo as it was a much quicker means of transportation than attempting to walk all the way back to Hogwarts from the small village of Hogsmead.
It is nearly a quarter of an hour before Harry reaches Aberfort’s place due to the remoteness of the Shrieking Shack and the slowness of his and Snape’s walk. Harry can hear the injured man make a few more sounds of distress but when Harry asks if he’d wish to take a short break Snape speaks but a handful of words that makes it very clear to Harry that’s the exact opposite of what he wishes to do.
Harry raps his knuckles across the door, and after a few moments of silence a small slice of light is cast down to the street as the front door is pushed open.
“Ah Harry, I’ve been expecting you. Do come in.” Harry offers the man a gracious thanks before shuffling him and Snape inside the candle lit room. “I presume you need to use the floo.”
“Please. Severus is in need of a mediwitch or wizard.”
“Do not speak my name, Potter.” The words leave Snape’s thin lips in a gruff drawl as he glares from one person to the other, eager to be out of the room if only to make it to Hogwarts quickly so he’d be done with Potter’s insufferable presence.
Harry rolls his eyes though he does let out a sigh of relief as Aberfort gestures towards the pot of floo powder that was resting on the mantle. Taking but a small handful Harry tosses the powder into the fireplace, the brightly burning flames turning an almost sickly green color before, shuffling both himself and Snape inside, Harry as quickly and as clearly as possible speaks. “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding, Infirmary.”
Even though Harry has traveled by floo countless of times now the boy, to this day, is still not quite use to the insane swirling as he plunges through a multitude of fireplaces. Finally, after what surely was but a second or two but to Harry seemed a lot longer, both him and Severus are moreso spat out of the fireplace, almost as though they were trespassers on someone’s land and was now being unceremoniously removed.
It is do to more luck than skill that Harry manages to keep himself and Snape up on their feet, his emerald green eyes glancing around in search of Madam Pomfrey. His search isn’t a long one since the witch in question calls out his name in shocked surprise, the woman’s warm hands quickly taking ahold of Snape’s free arm as she helps Harry lead him to an empty bed in the back, one which would afford the man privacy.
“S-Severus? Severus!” Harry’s brows arch into his hairline as he watches a weak looking Malfoy collapse out of the bed he was in before shuffling over to Snape as quickly as his shaking legs would allow.
“Mr. Malfoy!” Poppy exclaims in her usual reprimanding voice. “You are not yet well enough to be walking around nor is the Headmaster in any state to be receiving company.”
Draco ignores Madam Promfrey, his grey blue eyes focused on Snape as his stumbling feet finally make it to the man’s bed. “Severus?” Malfoy’s voice is a small whisper, his pale hands gently touching Snape’s equally pale face. “Oh!” The words leave Malfoy’s lips on a soft gasp of surprise as Snape takes ahold of his hand in one of his own, the man’s thin lips pressed to the warm palm in a soft, silky kiss. “I thought…I thought you were dead.”
Slowly, almost as though the man is fighting sleep, Snape opens his eyes, the dark onyx gaze nearly seeming to burn more than the roaring fireplace across the room. When Severus speaks his voice is husky, and Harry is sure it’s different from its usual silky drawl due to the man’s near death experience with Nagini. “I am well.”
“What happened?”
“N-Nagini.” Snape barely gets the words past his chapped lips before he passes out into blissful oblivion.
“Severus, Severus!” Upon watching the man lose consciousness Draco begins shaking Snape with renewed energy, his eyes wide and crazed as he screeches the man’s name repeatedly.
Madam Pmfrey simple tuts to herself, her own hands wrapping around Draco as she leads the boy back to his bed. “Do not fret Mr. Malfoy, Severus will be fine and dandy, he just needs some rest, as do you. Here.” Lying the boy down on the sheets Madam Pomfrey pulls a vial from her apron pocket, pulling the cork free as she holds the small vial to Draco’s lips. “Drink up, it’ll help with your healing.”
Reluctantly Draco drinks the potion, his eyelids becoming heavier and heavier as the seconds slip by before, not even a minute later, the boy drifts off to sleep. Tutting to herself once more Madam Pomfrey draws the blankets over Draco’s body before her gaze finally lands on Harry. “Thank you Mr. Potter. Dumbledore would be pleased.”
Harry simple inclines his head to the woman, his emerald green gaze momentarily flickering over to Draco curiously, before the glowing green orbs stray over to Snape. Shaking his head just a bit Harry runs a tired hand over his haggard face. It had been a long night.
***
“I’ll kill him. I’ll kill that bloody bastard.”
“You’ve already failed the first few times, Draco.” Snape’s voice is silky smooth as he speaks, his potion stained fingers gently rubbing over Draco’s hand as the boy keeps him propped up in bed. Even after a week Snape was still weak, his body recovering from what should have been a death blow from Nagini, if…if the Potter brat hadn’t interfered.
“I don’t care.”
Snape simply laughs at Draco’s petulant tone before using his free hand to wrap in the pale locks of Draco’s hair, bringing the boy down for a slow, languid kiss. Already Snape can feel Draco relaxing against him. Smirking into the kiss Snape draws back before resting his head once more against the soft feather pillow. “If I were you I’d speak more carefully about the boy whose just killed the greatest Dark Lord in more than a millennium.”
Draco groans to himself, his grey eyes closing briefly as the boy tries to reign in some of his despair over the situation he found himself in. Of course he was more than thrilled that Severus was still alive, but oh! How cruel fate seemed to be to them as the image of Harry flows through his mind. “Is there…is there really no other way?”
“None.”
“Of all the bloody bonding spells to use why did he have to go for the Carus Hostilis?”
“Carus Hostilis, or more commonly known as Beloved Enemies, is a bonding spell that went out of practice in the early 16th century.” Even though Draco has the urge to roll his eyes to the ceiling as Snape gets into Professor mode the platinum blond however is very grateful to the man, finding comfort in the unassuming routine. “This spell was designed as a way to end feuds between respective families, binding the heirs or heiresses of both houses together, thus ending the rift between the two warring families.”
“Can’t this spell be reversed?”
“Before the bonding is consummated aye, it can be.”
“Well? Let’s go find that bloody Harry Potter then.”
“No need for that, I am here.”
Draco’s head whips around at the sound of Harry’s voice, the dark haired man just entering the Infirmary. “I would have been here days ago but Poppy only just let me in.”
Severus scoffs in disgust, his inky black gaze closing, his head still resting against the pillow as Harry draws closer to the pair. Not wishing to be here any longer than necessary Harry lifts his wand in the air, and speaking the words to counter the bond the boy directs his arm in the movements he’d been practicing all week, needing to get it just right. “Hostilis Iterum!”
The silence in the room lasts for all of three seconds before Draco frantically speaks. “Well? Did it work?”
“I…I don’t know.” Harry’s eyes are squinted in thought. There should have been a light, like when he first cast the bonding spell. Why wasn’t there a light? Shaking his head to himself Harry figures he’s not cast the spell properly so, squaring his shoulders, the boy once more brandishes his wand, giving it a sharp flick forward then to the left in a small arc as he speaks the words yet again. “Hostilis Iterum!” Enemies once more.
“Potter you little fool.” Severus voice is a harsh whisper, his dark gaze burning with loathing as he gazes at the exasperated teen.
“What’s going on, why isn’t it working.”
“No matter how the times change I see you’ll never change. Forever your Father’s child, foolhardily rushing into situations. Never reading between the lines!”
Harry glares at Snape angrily, his arms crossing over his chest. “This is the spell Dumbledore told me to use…”
“And as always,” Snape continues, his voice scathing. “As always, you blindly follow your precious Dumbledore’s orders. What is the name of a fool who follows the footsteps of an even greater fool?”
“Do not speak about the Headmaster that way!”
Snape laughs in dark humor, shaking his head from side to side. “Finally finally, after all these years. I was suppose to get some peace, one way or the other. But even death would have been better than stuck here with you, you silly little fool!”
“What are you talking about Snape?”
“Hostilis Iterum can only be cast before the bonding is consummated. However Potter, I assure that this bond has already been consummated.”
“W-what?” Both Harry and Draco speak the words at the same time, their eyes large in shock as they gaze at Severus incredulously.
“Did you even read into this bonding spell yourself Potter?”
“Well, Hermione…”
“Ah yes, the know it all.”
Harry glares darkly at Snape before continuing. “Hermione looked into it after I got the letter from Dumbledore to use it. She said it was a fool proof plan, the spell being able to bring someone back from the brink of death. It’s the most powerful bonding spell there is.”
“And therein lies our little problem Mr. Potter.”
“I do not understand, Sir.”
Even in the situation he found himself in Snape can’t help the twitching of his lips as they curl into a humorless smile. It seemed that, finding himself in over his head, Potter had easily converted back to the scared little boy he was in Snape’s classes, shuffling nervously from foot to foot, bright green eyes lowered to the floor dejectedly though, most telling, was the brat calling him Sir.
“Only the most powerful spell can bind to enemies together Potter.”
“Hermione said that’s why it’s so powerful, because it has to work even harder than all of the other bonding spells.”
“So powerful indeed Mr. Potter, that it overrides any previous bonding spells that exist between either party.”
“Yes, Hermione said that too.”
“It is very simple, is it not?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Wrong.”
Harry blinks, taking an unconscious step back at the venom in Snape’s voice, the man spitting the word out angrily, his dark eyes flashing.
“I do not understand.”
“Severus…Severus was bound to me.” Draco speaks the words softly, his grey blue eyes still wide as he glances from one person to the other. “The spell, the spell…”
“Yes, you can feel it to, can’t you Draco?” Snape’s silky voice is turned to Draco now, his pale fingers lowering as she wraps the slim digits around Draco’s thigh.
“It should have…it should have overridden our bond but…I still feel it, it’s still here. What is going on Severus?”
Quirking his lips into that same humorous smile Severus chuckles darkly, his pale fingers slowly rising from Draco’s thigh so that he can gently rub across the boy’s flat stomach. “You’re pregnant.”
“What!?”
“I knew I was to perish on the battlefield. I was selfish.”
“How can I possibly be pregnant? Potions are needed for…” Draco’s voice trails off, his gaze sharp as he glances into the inky blackness of Severus’ eyes.
“I slipped it into your food a few days before the final battle. I wanted to leave you with a part of me.”
There are tears in Draco’s eyes now, his own hand resting atop Severus’ as he softly stutters out the word pregnant over and over. As uncomfortable as Harry was by Severus’ and Draco’s relationship, this new bit of news wasn’t helping his situation, and shifting slightly from one foot to the other Harry decides to break up the moment, wanting to get the conversation back on track.
“But Sir, what does this have to do with the Carus Hostilis, or it’s annulment? And earlier you said that the bond was consummated, but…” Here Harry’s face burns bright red at just the thought of laying with the brooding Professor, and fidgeting once more from foot to foot Harry gestures between the two of them in an exaggerated motion. “Well, you know that we have never.”
“Like he would ever want to sleep with you.” Draco tosses his head back irritably, his nose sticking in the air as he huffs in disdain. Harry growls lowly to himself, feeling slighted by Draco’s words yet not sure if he should defend himself. Really, it was not as though he wanted to sleep with Professor Snape but Draco always managed to get under his skin.
Harry’s gaze is however diverted to the Professor in question as Severus snorts in apparent agreement with Draco.
“Did you not hear what I said earlier, foolish child. Draco is pregnant.”
“Yes but what has that got to do with me?” Harry tilts his head to the side curiously, idly glancing at Draco’s flat stomach, hardly able to believe there was a child in there. If it wasn’t for Hermione informing him that males could get pregnant when she went about researching this spell then Harry would be in for more than just one shock.
“When one casts Carus Hostilis, if the recipient is already has a bond then it is usually removed. However, there is the rare case that the recipient of the spell already has a bond with another and that the partner is pregnant. Usually, if such a thing is in effect both parties would simply agree to stall the bonding spell until after the birth of the child, or of course, the couple could reverse their own bonding spell, thus ending all ties of the pregnant partner with the Carus Hostilis recipient.”
“Ok, I understand. But…I didn’t know you were already in a bond let alone that Draco was pregnant. I mean, he didn’t even know!”
“That is true, but as always Potter, your damnable luck pans out.”
“Sir?”
“If Carus Hostilis is cast and the recipient is in a bond with a pregnant mate then the spell will simply incorporate the other partner into the bond, thus making a triad.”
“Bloody freaking hell!” Draco is the first to speak after Snape finishes, his gaze matching Snape’s in intensity as he turns his blue grey eyes to Harry’s own emerald green ones. “There is no way I want to be bound with him! This is horrible! Severus, Severus…there has to be some way to reverse this spell. You say that, because I am now part of this bond, this triad that Carus Hostilis already registers as consummated, right?”
“Yes Draco, that is true.” Harry’s mouth is still wide open in shock as Severus begins speaking again. “Once the bond becomes a triad it cannot be reversed since, the only way for a triad to take place is if one of the partners is pregnant which, of course, entities sex.”
“But I’ve not slept with either you or Draco. Blood hell Professor, I’m not even gay!” Snape snorts at Harry’s exclamation, causing the green gaze to squint into a glare before the boy continues. “Besides, Hermione said that even if the bond is consummated there’s a way to remove it. It is a complex ritual, which is why the reversal is usually done before a coupling since it will take months and months of preparation after consummation.”
“Yes Potter. So even if we had slept together there still would have been a way out of this, but, as I mentioned earlier, you just simply have the most damnable luck.”
“What do you mean Sir?”
“Once a child is conceived the spell is irrevocable.”
“What!?”
“Given the nature of the spell, and as it is one between enemies, even heterosexual couples must use a potion to conceive. Indeed the only way to seal the spell permanently, so to speak, is with the conception of a child.”
“I…I don’t understand.”
“Don’t be silly Potter. You understand me perfectly well.”
Harry swallows thickly, his throat convulsing due to his nerves as he speaks the words out on a soft stutter. “Draco is pregnant. We are in a triad now and…and now and now…”
“And now Potter?”
Harry swallows again, his gaze moving between both Draco and Snape before he whispers the words out even softer than before. “Carus Hostilis is irreversible now.”
