Draco sat with his hands between his knees, his head tucked down against his chest, eyes lowered to the floor.
He was waiting. It felt like he’d waiting for ages. The Wizengamot had been debating for days – three to be exact – and Draco had spent all that time tucked into a back room with his lawyer. At night they sent him back to Azkaban to sleep, but during the day he remained in the tiny room.
His representation had been paid for by an anonymous donor, and was nearly as good as if Draco had chosen him personally. That was, of course, impossible as the Ministry had frozen his accounts the moment he’d been tossed into Azkaban. Supposing he was set free, he’d get his money back. If he wasn’t, they would take it – as they had the other Death Eaters’ – and donate it to the rebuilding of Hogwarts.
Draco’s trial was one of the last. They’d done them by age, oldest first. Lucius had been sentenced six months ago to ten years in Azkaban. Narcissa had been let off, for her protection of Boy-Wonder during the final battle.
Draco didn’t quite know where he’d be. He wanted to go home. He wanted his own bed, in his own room, and a real shower that actually left him feeling clean.
But that wasn’t likely.
He’d be sentenced for his crimes. Some of them he was guilty of, everything with the necklace and the poisoned mead, but several he hadn’t even been involve in. He couldn’t claim Imperious, though, and he’d refused to let his representation say he’d been Imperioused, he wasn’t going to lie on the stand.
What he wanted to tell them was that he didn’t want to do it. His father had pressured him in a way that no one else would ever understand. Voldemort had ways of controlling that weren’t Imperious. Draco had seen things that no one should ever see, and that was why he’d done the things that he knew he shouldn’t.
But those were things he didn’t like to think about. Those were things that were over and done, and if this was what he had to do to get over it, then this was what he would do.
He’d had several visitors in the last three days.
Narcissa was here every day. She spent hours sitting next to him, stroking his hand, and showing the affection that Lucius had prevented when Draco was younger. It had been nice, more than nice really, to have someone with him who wanted to take care of him.
Pansy had stopped by, too. She’d been acquitted of everything, they hadn’t had any proof. When she was there, she’d talked of nothing but the date night she had planned for the moment he was released. Draco didn’t have the heart to tell her that she most definitely wasn’t who he was interested in. She was missing a vital part of anatomy to be his significant other.
Blaise and Theo had been around – once each and then once together. It had been relaxing to talk to the boys about things that weren’t important. They’d told him about the plans to reopen Hogwarts, and the opportunity for their class to return and repeat their seventh year, something they were both planning on doing.
Draco wished that he’d have the same opportunity that they would, but that would be nearly impossible. He wanted to get his NEWTS and become a Healer. It would be a way to start making up for the wrongs he’d committed – but just a start.
“Mr. Malfoy?” The door opened, and a small witch in green Wizengamot robes stood in the doorway. “They’re ready for you.”
Narcissa squeezed Draco’s hand tightly, before standing behind her son and his lawyer. They followed the tiny witch into the courtroom, and Draco was directed to the seat in front. His mother stood in the doorway, and his attorney took his seat at Draco’s side.
“Draco Arabraxas Malfoy.” Kingsley Shackelbolt – the new Chief Warlock – looked at the blonde boy in front of him.
Draco nodded slightly.
“Based on all evidence presented and the discussion of the Wizengamot we have found you guilty of the following charges: one count of attempted murder with a Cursed Object; one count of attempted murder with a Poisoned Object; two counts of assault causing bodily harm. You have been cleared of all other charges.”
Draco froze. This couldn’t be right. He had been so sure – the evidence has seemed overwhelming against him, even if it wasn’t true.
“As for sentencing,” Kingsley continued, “Due to your willingness to cooperate, and your answers when questioned with Veritaserum – “ They had asked if he regretted his decisions; if he was truly sorry “ –and also two testimonies during deliberation, the sentencing is as follows. Time served thus far will cover you Azkaban time. You’re required to stay at Malfoy Manor until September 1st at which point you will return to Hogwarts to complete your seventh year. If it at any time you commit any crime, even a misdemeanor, you’re sentencing will be revoked, and you will serve out a five year sentence in Azkaban with no chance of parole. Do you understand?”
Draco stared blankly at the Wizengamot.
“Mr. Malfoy. Do you understand?”
Draco nodded numbly.
“That will be all, then, Mr. Malfoy. You will be escorted home by your attorney. We trust that you’ll head straight there.”
Draco nodded again, and couldn’t stop the tears of happiness that leaked out of his eyes. But who had testified on his behalf?
“I can’t believe you testified on his behalf.” Ron Weasley nearly shouted at his two best friends. “After everything he did – after he almost killed me?”
Hermione Granger laid a soothing hand on Ron’s arm, and he noticeably calmed
“Ron, he wasn’t guilty of the other charges.” Harry Potter explained, softly. “It wouldn’t be fair for him to be convicted of things that he didn’t do. Or that he was manipulated into doing because he feared for his life.”
“But he tried to kill me!” Ron said, again.
“Harry saved you though.” Hermione kissed his cheek. “And you’re fine now.”
“I’m not fine! I can never drink mulled mead again!”
“You didn’t even like it before, Ron.” Harry laughed. “Everything is going to be okay.”
“But now I’ll have to see his face every single day at Hogwarts.” Ron moaned. “His ferret-y, pointy, Albino face.”
“It’s not so pointy anymore.” Harry offered. “And definitely less ferret-y.”
“How do you even know that?” Ron demanded.
Harry blushed. “I saw him when we were there. It’s just not as pointy is all I’m saying.”
“Harry’s right.” Hermione jumped in. “It’s definitely not as pointy or as ferret-y as it was before. And he can’t cause trouble, Ron, because he’s on parole. And honestly, you didn’t see him. I really think he might have changed. He seemed genuinely sorry.”
Harry sent a grateful look to Hermione, who winked in return.
“I can’t believe this is actually going to happen. It’s like a nightmare. Next thing you know, Lucius will be teaching Potions and Voldemort will be teaching Defense.” Ron moaned, again, and Harry and Hermione both burst out laughing.
