Chapter One:
Bill Weasley looked around the rough terrain of the Mayan ruins. It was the wrong time of year for the place to be swarming with tourists, so he and his associate were able to explore the ruins undisturbed. After the war, and after his divorce from Fleur Delawhore, Bill picked up his life, moved out of Shell Cottage and back to Egypt. He left Gringotts and opened his own business. That was three years ago. Now he, along with his associate, track down lost or stolen magical objects. He is paid handsomely for his work. He has a working relationship with the Ministry, he has helped track down fugitives, rare dark objects, and anything magical that might have fallen into Muggle hands.
This job had taken him to Mexico to investigate a newly discovered ancient city that had just been uncovered by an Australian archeologist names David Humdrum. The Ministry of Magic became concerned when a picture, in a Muggle paper, showed the site of the dig, along with several artefacts, there was a picture of what looked like a wooden box with ancient magical symbols carved into it. The Ministry called upon the services of, Weasley's Recovery Service. Bill and his associate, Hermione Granger, went to Mexico immediately.
“Bill, look at these. I swear every time I look at these ruins I see something I have never seen before,” Hermione said in awe, as she examined carvings on the side of a pillar.
Bill smiled at Hermione. After the war, Hermione needed a change. Her parents decided to stay in Australia, she didn't blame them, but staying in Britain was not something she wanted to do. She almost moved to Australia with her parents, but Bill had come to her with a business proposal and she accepted. Now she lived in Egypt with him, she never would have imaged that her life would take an interesting turn after the war. They live in the same house and they enjoy each other's company and each other's bed on a regular basis, but they would never admit that they were in a relationship.
“These are beautiful, maybe you should take some pictures and we can try to translate them later,” Bill suggested when he took a look at them. He suddenly took off his shirt, it was really hot and humid and he was sweating through it. He didn't want to use magic because he would miss Hermione's reaction. He wasn't disappointed.
Hermione stood there and stared for a moment at Bill. He was beautiful. He had several tattoos on his back. Most were ancient Egyptian symbols, but there was also a dragon and a wolf howling at the moon. On his chest, he had a small joker's hat in memory of his brother Fred right above his heart. There was an Ankh tattoo around his navel that disappeared underneath his jeans.
Hermione snapped out of her daze. “I already did. At this rate I am going to use up all my memory cards before we get to the excavation site.” Hermione fell in love with photography since she moved to Egypt with Bill. She was becoming quite good. She even sold some pictures to a Muggle travel magazine.
“We should find a place close to the excavation site and make camp until sunset. It will be easier to examine the site once darkness sets in,” Bill said.
Hermione agreed and they made their way to find a secure location. They made their way on foot to the site. They didn't want to Apparate; they didn't want to disturb anyone in the area. They had a little bit of walking ahead of them, but they didn't mind. They quickly set up camp and had a quick dinner. They sat down and discussed their strategy for when they arrived at the excavation site. They expected the archeologist to be on the site. They usually camp near where they are digging. They needed to come up with a cover story in order to get close to the artefacts.
“How about university students on a semester a broad?” Hermione suggested.
“That might work. We could be anthropology majors, a minor in photography for you. That might allow you to take photographs of the artefacts,” Bill said.
“Hopefully. Maybe you can chat Mr. Humdrum up and I can get a closer look at what he uncovered,” Hermione suggested.
“Something tells me, he would rather talk to you,” Bill said suggestively.
“Why would you say that?” Hermione asked.
“From what I could find on Mr. Humdrum, he has been travelling abroad for years now. He has no wife and as you and I both know there isn't much room for socializing when you are constantly travelling.”
“I see. Should I wear my low-cut jumper?” Hermione smiled at Bill. Sometimes when they would have to come up with a cover story to get close to whatever they were trying recover, then they would continue role-playing when they got home. Hermione loved when they role-played.
“I don't think it would matter, but I would love to see you in that,” Bill said.
“You're so bad,” Hermione joked.
“Let's get going,” Bill said. They secured their camp site so nobody would see it. Hermione grabbed her camera and a backpack, to help back up their cover story.
*!*!*!
Hermione and Bill arrived at the site as the moon came up, but it was eerily quiet. There were work lights on around the area where they seemed to be concentrating the dig on, but there was no one around. Bill and Hermione looked at each other; this was not a good sign. There should be a least a few people around. There were some tents set up off in the distance. Hermione and Bill made their way towards them. Hoping that the dig team was there.
“Maybe they took a break for dinner?”
“All of them?” Hermione questioned.
“I don't know how many of them there are,” Bill said. His voice sounded a little worried.
“Hello?” Hermione said, as they came to one of the tents. They didn't hear anything. They looked around and there was no movement anywhere, but they did see smoke coming from behind another tent. They made their way towards the smoke. They came upon a campfire, but nobody was around.
Hermione looked around, something wasn't right. She went into one of the tents and what she saw had her worried. “Bill! You need to see this!”
Bill rushed in and looked around at the mess. The cots were flipped over, belongings were scattered all over the place. Bill breathed in and immediately moved to the ground and moved aside what was a table. There was blood on the ground.
“Blood, not a lot, I think there was a struggle,” Bill said.
“Is there more?” Hermione asked. When Bill was bitten by Greyback, he did not get the full werewolf curse, but he did get some side effects of the curse, one of them was a heightened sense of smell. They left the tent and entered another one.
“I can't tell how many people were here, but there is a fair amount of blood in this tent and it's fresh.” Bill moved around and flipped over one of the cots, there was a fairly large amount on the ground along with shredded pieces of clothing and a broken mirror. “This happened maybe thirty minutes ago.”
Hermione looked at Bill and both of them were thinking the same thing. “I think our priorities just changed.”
Bill left the tent and he looked around, but he couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. They couldn't have gone far, but this place was unique. The site of the ancient city was in a clearing, surrounded by dense forest. Bill took a deep breath trying to find a scent.
Hermione came out after him. "Anything?"
"Not yet, they are too far away. We are going to have to explore the forest," Bill said, pointing in the distance.
"What the hell could have happened to them?" Hermione wondered out loud.
"I don't know, but at least two of them are injured," Bill said concerned.
They looked around a bit more, trying to find any evidence of who, or what, could have taken them.
"Why do I think this has to do with that box that was uncovered," Hermione said.
"I think you're right. The symbols were not clear enough in the picture in the paper to translate them, but I wonder..."
"If they opened it and unleashed something, or someone else is here that really wanted it." Hermione finished his thought. "Wait, where are the artefacts that they uncovered? Shouldn't they be here?"
"We need find these people," Bill said.
"I just hope we are not too late," Hermione said as she stripped off her backpack.
Bill and Hermione followed the scent of blood deep into the forest. "The scent stops there," Bill said as he pointed to a structure that was hidden in the greenery.
"What is that?" Hermione asked, looking at the hidden structure. She cautiously went up to it and started to examine it with the light from her wand. “I've never seen these markings before.”
Bill came up behind her. “I don't think this has ever been discovered before. Did you feel something when you came up to the structure?”
Hermione looked puzzled. “I didn't notice. Why?”
“I feel a little bit of heat coming from the structure.”
Hermione put her hand of the structure. “I don't feel anything,” she said with a shrug.
“I think it is my wolf senses kicking in, we might have crossed a magical ward.”
Hermione looked surprised. “Wouldn't I have felt something?”
“Not necessarily, you are used to crossing barriers, but with my heightened senses I think I was able to detect it. Just like I can detect it when we put up the wards on our campsite. I think this structure is hidden from Muggles.”
The structure wasn't that big. Hermione and Bill looked around it to see if there was an opening. They couldn't find one, but Bill did find something interesting.
“Someone was dragged through here,” Bill said as he pointed to a trail that led right into a solid wall of the structure.
“Wouldn't you be able to smell the blood?”
“Not if the wound started healing. Also, I am getting other scents that are drowning out the scent of blood.”
“There has to be a way to open this,” Hermione said. She took out her wand and started to try various spells to open the door. “Nothing is working,” she said to Bill.
“Here, let me try,” Bill said. He tried various spells also, and when none of them worked, he moved his hands along the edge of the wall until he found what he was looking for... a loose brick. He pushed it in and the wall slid open. “There we go,” he said.
“Do you know how sexy you look when you figure out something that I couldn't?” Hermione smiled.
Bill winked at her. “Not as sexy as you.”
Bill could pick up the scent of blood more when they entered the structure. The structure itself was more like a reverse pyramid. They walked into a huge room that had a bridge of stairs leading down deep into who knew where.
Hermione examined the wall. “Bill, you need to see these!”
Bill walked over to where Hermione was looking. The symbols on the wall were not ancient Mayan, they were magical symbols. “This isn't an ancient Mayan structure; this is magical.”
“If Muggles entered this place, someone magical came in with them. These symbols are from a very powerful cloaking spell. The symbols carved in this order would make this structure completely invisible. There is no way a Muggle could have seen it.”
“Then who brought them in here? As far as I know there are no magical communities in this area.”
Bill thought for a moment. “Well, they were uncovering an ancient city; maybe that has something to do with it.”
“Maybe but...” Hermione was cut off by a high pitched scream coming from below them. “What was that?” Hermione asked looking down.
“I don't know but we are going to find out,” Bill said as he pulled out his wand and started down the stairs. “Be careful, we have no idea what we are going to run into here.”
“Don't have to tell me twice,” Hermione said, as she kept looking around for anything unusual.
When they stepped on the bridge, they thought it would collapse underneath them, but they were surprised how solid it felt under their feet.
Bill picked up other scents as they descended deeper into the dark.
“If people weren't in danger, I would be enjoying myself right now,” Hermione said.
“I am. It is really exciting going into the unknown,” Bill said with an odd smile on his face.
It took them a while to reach the bottom, and what they saw amazed them. They were in a huge cavern, there was more writing on the walls. They could hear running water in the background. There was a small pool to the far right, and a stone slab anchored by tall pillars on each side. Bill looked at the carving briefly. “Now, these symbols are ancient Mayan.”
“How far did we come down?” Hermione asked aloud.
“Maybe three kilometres.” Bill guessed.
They walked to the other end of the cavern and came upon two big double doors. They were carved with more Mayan and magical symbols and dragons. When they walked through the doors there were four paths to take.
“Now which way do we go?” Hermione said, looking around for clues.
“I have no idea. Let's try...”
“Is someone there? Help us!” a voice screamed from the path to the left.
“I guess we know what path we are taking,” Hermione said as she darted towards the voice with Bill on her heels.
When they reached the end of the path there was a small room lit with only torches on the wall. There was a large enclosure in the corner with six people in it.
Bill and Hermione rushed to them. “Are you David Humdrum?” Bill asked the older gentleman.
David Humdrum took one look at Bill's scarred face and took a step back. “Y..yes, and this is my excavation team. Who are you?”
Bill was so used to people's reaction to his scars that it didn't even faze him anymore. “I'm Bill Weasley and this is my associate, Hermione Granger,” he said as he tried to open the door.
“Are you hurt?” Hermione asked, concerned when she saw the blood soaked shirt wrapped around his arm. Bill searched the room for a key to the cage.
“Lisa has a pretty nasty cut on her leg, and my arm has a huge gash on it, but other than that we are fine.” Mr. Humdrum said, holding up his bloody bandaged arm.
“How did you get here?” Hermione asked.
“We were settling down to eat dinner, when we were ambushed from behind and dragged here and then thrown into this cage.”
Hermione looked at Bill; he shook his head. There was no key around.
“We have to get you out of here,” Hermione said.
“Before they come back!” Mr. Humdrum exclaimed.
Hermione tried to pull on the cage door. It didn't budge; she didn't expect it to, but she had to try. “How many of them are there?” she asked Mr. Humdrum, as she stepped aside so Bill could try to open it.
“I think four of them; it all happened so fast.”
Bill leaned to Hermione and whispered very quietly, “I can't open it without using magic or my special abilities.”
“We can't leave them here,” Hermione whispered back.
Bill knew if he used magic in front of Muggles, the penalty from the Ministry would be dire. He could lose everything.
“Stand back. I am going to see if I can get this open,” Bill said.
The group huddled into the far corner as Bill tried to kick the door in. It would be less conspicuous if he tried to use his extra strength than if he used magic.
Hermione tried to distract the group from Bill. “Why did they take you?”
“We don't know, but I heard one of them mumble, something about meddling mugs?”
Hermione's eyes widened. She was sure that was meddling Muggles. “Do you remember anything else?”
“Well, they took the artefacts we uncovered. One of them had a British accent. Like yours,” he said suspiciously.
Hermione furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. Nothing about this was adding up. “Whatever happened to you has nothing to do with us,” she said trying to reassure him.
While Hermione was getting as much information as she could, Bill managed to damage the door enough to pry it open.
“Got it!” Bill said triumphantly as he pulled the door open.
The group hurried out of the cage and thanked Bill profusely.
“I have no idea how to thank you,” Mr. Humdrum said.
“Thank us later, right now we need to get out of here, before whoever it is come back,” Hermione said.
They started to leave when a voice came out of the path in front of them, “Hello, beautiful.”
