ERA OF THE SUN: Death and Rebirth
Harry crumbled to the ground, blood roaring in his ears as his wand fell with a clank to the floor. A mixture of relief and sorrow swirled in his body as he gazed on the finally dead form of his enemy. He was dead. Finally dead. The Wizarding World was now safe.
Suddenly, a sharp pain hit his back and he fell to his side in agony. Lucius Malfoy’s face stared apathetically down at him before the blond fell under a green spell. Then everything went blurry as the teen coughed up thick globs of blood, the coppery taste filling every corner of his mouth with the disgusting taste. Somehow Harry knew he was dying. He could feel the damage to his organs and the way his own cells were screaming at him. So much for prophesy…A funny thing happens when you realize you’re dying, or at least in Harry’s case. He did not see his life flash before his eyes but he was full of regret. He’d never told the Dursleys that he cared for them despite their abuse. He’d never travelled outside Britain. He’d never asked Mrs. Weasley to adopt him officially. He should have joined Sirius in the veil… and he never had a loving family who wanted him…The last thing was the part he most regretted. He’d thought he’d be able to grow up and achieve that love with a wife and kids… but now…He felt someone’s hand in his and a call of his name in hysterical weeping. Who?... He tried to breath again but… His body flailed as he pointlessly fought for one last breath. Then, as he found himself in complete darkness, Harry made his final wish: ‘I hope wherever I am going, I’ll have a family.'Suddenly, the broken teenager felt his magic tingle and a feeling of vertigo overcame him. Then he was somewhere warm and dark, his movements restricted by some sort of barrier. It reminded him of his cupboard, but he felt a sensation of peace and safety he’d only experienced the beginning of his freshman year at Hogwarts.
“The Gods are speaking for themselves now!” Miguel shouted to the crowd, helping the rival ball players up and ignoring his lover’s concerned expression and the soft calls of warning. The people of El Dorado cheered. “There will be no sacrifices. Not now, not ever!” The High Priest, Tzekel-Kan, was taken back as Miguel advanced on him and shouted, “GET o…. OW…” Miguel suddenly felt his body collapse as a strange sensation ripped through him.
“Miguel!” Tulio shouted, rushing forward and was soon joined by Chief Tannabok just as they noticed the sand below Miguel turn a red color.
“FAKE!” Tzekel-Kan shouted, first in disbelief and then in anger. “The god Miguel is a fake!” Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the thief, Chel, trying to move backwards into the crowd in fear.
The citizens of El Dorado were meanwhile torn between disbelief and confusion, their gold and stone jewelry thumping against skin as they turned their heads side to side to observe the two fractions of the city. They were anxious to see what would happen next as the chief said, “We must remove his leg coverings.”
With disregard to their audience, Tulio yanked Miguel’s blood-stained pants down immediately, only worry for Miguel filling his mind. When he did, he was confronted with an opening on his lover’s body between the testicles and anus that had never been there before… and it was growing wider. Tulio's scream caught in his throat. Something was coming out and fast… Unconsciously, Tulio's limbs had begun shaking.
Recognition suddenly covered the faces of the women and several men in the crowd as Chel gasped, falling on her knees and frantically praying. “Is that…” one of the priest’s guards and occasional assistant began before his face drained of color. He let his weapons fall as he dropped to his knees as well, praying.
Miguel's head thrashed in the sand, tears streaming down his face. "Tulio... HELP!" Tulio opened his mouth but found he could not speak nor move as his eyes remained on the sight before him. "Tu...Tulio?!"
Tzekel-kan was rendered speechless. He’d read of Gods who were of both sexes but never before had he witnessed such a being. Was that truly what he was seeing?
Chief Tannabok reached around the bubble that emerged and guided it out. Miguel screamed as a head emerged in the chief’s pudgy hands, joined at an unheard-of speed by shoulders and then the rest of the tiny body. The crowd then watched in astonishment as the hole healed without any trace of having been there. The golden-haired man let out a sigh of relief, his breathing almost immediately back to normal.
The Chief laughed as he cradled the beautiful boy to him and whipped his face of the mucus, revealing not normal blue eyes but a startling green that rivaled Miguel’s and hair as dark as Tulio’s.
“I… I do not understand,” the Priest said, falling backwards onto the sand in astonishment. What exactly had he just witnessed? Gods did bleed? Had he made a pregnant God play a dangerous game?
“I think I do,” the chubby chief said with a wide smile as he held the bloody babe tenderly before handing the child to Miguel’s grasping arms. The blond man's entire being suddenly was focused on the little one he held, completely ignoring the chief as he gestured for a guard's cloak to wrap around Miguel's hips. “The Time is not one of destruction but of new life and new hope. A new era has begun and the Gods have led the way.”
“A new era of… life?” the priest exclaimed. This was impossible. All his years of study said the era of paradise and life known as the Era of the Sun was to take place one thousand years after the Age of the Jaguar. There… there truly were no sinners in El Dorado? No. That could not be true. Something else had to be at work here. For now, it would be best to play along. He brought himself to his knees and bowed before the new family. “I beg your forgiveness, my lords. I did not know Gods took on more human characteristics when they entered our world. I pledge myself as protector of you and your child until I join my ancestors in Shebalba.”
Tulio, still in shock, merely replied, “Uhhh… Thanks?”
Chief Tannabok rose placed a gentle hand on Tulio’s shoulder. “Perhaps we should get your husband and child to bed?”
Soft lips, framed by a scratchy blond goatee descended on the infant's tiny head as he shut his eyes in sleep. The Chief ordered a cushioned lift stretcher as transport for the ‘new family and child’ to be carried back to the temple.
Alone in the shade of the temple, the new parents were silent. The only sounds heard in the stone dwelling was that of Tulio pacing the length of the building and the occasional sleepy murmur of the newborn.
“Tulio…” Miguel began, cradling his baby closer to him, a sadness over taking him at the thought his lover did not share in his joy. He always wanted a child and had originally thought of adopting an orphan from the streets when they had lived in Spain if they acquired enough gold to support them. He’d probably still do that… after all he himself had lived on the streets since he was five… but now he had a child of his body as well to carry on his and his lover’s blood. And… maybe Tulio would now be more susceptible to staying in El Dorado where they were welcome rather than in Spain where Gypsies like themselves were looked down upon. “Are you upset?”
“UPSET DOESN’T EVEN…,” his voice dropped off as he observed Miguel’s face. “If… if this is not a dream… then no I am not upset. I’m just confused… how did this happen…”
A sly smile came over Miguel’s features. “Well when a man and a woman love each other very…”
“Exactly a woman! You’re not a woman… are you?” Tulio said, lifting up the blanket to observe his lover’s sex organs more closely. The opening was no longer there.
Miguel shook his head, not fazed by his lover’s inspection. “No and I’m just as confused as you are but our little Amado is a blessing.”
“Amado? You already named him?” Tulio said, his head in his hands.
“Why wouldn’t I?” Miguel asked as he cast a loving smile down on the naked boy in his arms.
Tulio just sighed. “This must be a dream. Maybe this will all make sense in the morning…” He then collapsed on the pile of cushions and proceeded to bury his face in a bright red cushion. Then suddenly he raised his head and stared at the bundle in Miguel’s arms and he made a move as though he wanted to reach out and touch the dark, wavy locks so like his own but hesitated and jerked his hand back. “No sense getting attached to a dream…” He then reburied his head in the cushion until his breathing evened out in sleep.
Miguel sighed, and held his baby closer to his heart. “Don’t worry, my sweet Amado. Your Padre will come around. Papa is sure of it.”
