A Decision to Make
The dust from the final battle settled and the Boy Who Lived stood victoriously in the mist of it all. Voldemort or Tom Riddle, as he was once was called, was finally gone and the wizardry world was finally at peace. Everyone wanted to shout to the heavens that it was all finally over, however it was rather difficult to do so when so many of their friends and foes had fallen in the final battle. For one wizard it had been really difficult considering that most of the wizard and witches that he fought against were once his best mates and apart of the Slytherin House.
He tried to remember if it really was that long ago that the only fighting they did was for the House Cup and Quidditch Cup. Their childhood fights had turned into a full blown out war by the time they had made it to their final year at Hogwarts. How he long for the days of childhood, instead of what he was faced with at this moment. Bodies stretched as far as the eyes could see and he along with others searched for one person in particular, the only girl among the Golden Trio, Hermione Granger.
Yes it was he, Draco Malfoy the Prince of Slytherin, who was searching for a Muggle-born believe it or not. Slowly he turned over each and every girl praying he would not see her face among the dead. He had only felt this kind of fear one time before and that had been when He Who Must No...no Voldemort his name was Voldermort had threatened to kill his family if he did not take the mark and find a way to kill Professor Dumbledore during his sixth year at Hogwarts. However, for some reason this fear was stronger than that of the death of his family. He did not know when his feeling for her had become so strong, but he was determined to find her one way or the other. Renewed with determination he made his way across the field. Slowly he turned over the closest witch beside him and prayed that the it did not belong to Hermione. The body turned out to be the one of Lavender Brown and she wasn't dead yet.
Draco could make out a large gash on herside, probably from a werewolf, as the moonlight flowed down from the sky. "I need some help over here, " he screamed over his shoulder to no one in particular. When no one answered he glanced up to holler again, when Weasley suddenly appeared at his side. When he saw who it was his face drained of all color and he shifted into high gear, "Quickly let's get her inside the castle." Draco did not want to stop his search for her, but the Brown girl needed his help now. Looking at Weasley, he could see the fear reflecting in his eyes and imagined that it must be what his own looked like.
A year ago if you had told him that He, Draco Lucius Malfoy, would be out on a battlefield helping Weasley save Brown he would have called you crazy. If someone would have told him that he would be deathly afraid that a muggle-born was missing in action, he would have called you insane. But he was here alive and free because of one stubborn witch who refuse to back down from a challenge and that challenge had been his stubborness. If Gran....no Hermione had not been there that night, had not been the one to find him where would he be now. If he had to guess he would probably be dead.
Six Months Earlier
The smell of rot and mildew filled his nostrils as a sound woke him from a restless sleep. More than likely it was Professor Snape returning with food, at least he hoped so. It has been 3 days, 6 hours, 28 minutes, and 56 seconds since his last decent meal, not that he was counting or anything. A couple of hours ago he almost came close to catching one of the many rats that roamed the rundown shack and eating it. However, a Malfoy he was and a Malfoy has neverand will never sink so low as to eat a rodent and he wasn't about to be the first. As he listened to the footsteps get closer and closer to the door. He noticed that the sound pattern was off not to mention they were not heavy enough to belong to the Professor.
Quickly Draco jumped off the bed an grab his wand. As quietly as possible he made his way to the door and planted his back against the wall beside it. Listening to the steps as they got closer and closer to where he was currently hidden. From the pattern of the steps he determined that the person of medium height, who approximately weighed a hundred and twenty to a hundred and thirty pounds. Even in his weakened state he knew he had a chance to take out the threat.
The person slowly entered the shack and Draco made his move. Quickly he tackled him to the ground and disarmed him. Draco pinned the struggling form beneath him and gripped his hand around his neck, "Who sent you?" The person struck back with his free arm and tried to throw him off. However, all the training he received as a Seeker paid off and he was able to keep the person pinned down. Tightening his grip on his neck almost to the point of cutting off his air Draco bellowed once more. "I SAID WHO SENT YOU?"
Draco could feel the days of no food taking a toll on his strength as he felt his grip weakening around the person's neck. Before he knew what was happening he was tossed across the room and into the wall. The wizard knew wandless magic, well so did he. Draco focused all of his remaining energy and threw a Stupify at the person. He saw as the figure jump out of the way and shot another spell in his direction. He quickly rolled to the side to avoid it as he tried to push away the dizziness that was slowly overcoming his mind.
Draco jumped to his feet and tackled him to the ground. Amidst their struggling and fighting they knocked the lone candle off of the table catching the tattered curtains on fire. The blaze caught them unaware as they stuggled to get the upper hand, each rolling the other person over trying to pin the other to the ground. However as they felt the heat from the fire they both stopped fighting and with the extra lighting Draco was able to make out the form of a female. The blackness was taking completely over his mind as the girls face blured in and out, however, before he completely lost consciousness he made out the face of the one and only Hermione Granger and heard her say some thing that sounded like his first name.
Draco didn't know how long he was out, but he was awaken by the sound of very serious, very loud bickering. "Hermione what the Fuck were you thinking? How could you bring that...that...that ferret" Through his half opened eyes he could see her raise her hand in the stop position to stop him from saying more, "Draco...his name is Draco, Ronald." Weasley face turned blood red, "You are already making use of his first name? Do you know who he is what he's done? What the bloody hell is wrong with you, Hermione"
Granger stubbornly crossed her arms, "What exactly did you expect me to do Ronald, leave him there to die?" Ron's face turned red with anger, "YES!!! One less deatheater to deal with." As their argument escaladed Draco started taking in his surroundings. He noticed that his arms and legs were bound to the bed and he was in a bright colored room which hurt his eyes to look at. As he tugged on the ropes, pain shot up from his side igniting a slight groan from his lips.
Their argument stopped abundantly and he saw Hermione's face appear in front of him, "Were the ropes really necessary, Ronald." He could feel Weasley glare down at him, "Hmmmm let me think." He raised his hand and started counting on his fingers, "He's a known deatheater, he let his fellow deatheaters into the castle last year, and in case you forgot he had a hand in the death of Professor Dumbledore. Need I say more?"
Draco didn't know what surprised him more. The fact that she didn't kill him on sight or that Weasley could count that high. But, nothing could have prepared him for what he heard next and that was Granger defending him. "Even Harry admitted that Draco lowered his wand that night. Everyone deserves a second chance, we haven't even heard his side of the story." Draco looked at her in disbelief, however old habits die hard and he could not stop the words that came tumbling out of his mouth, "No one has ever asked me for that and I'm not going to tell some no good Mudblood such as yourself." He knew that he deserved the punched to the face that Wesley delievered, but that would not change his way of thinking or so he thought.
Present Day
That was the first time Draco had ever felt a slight sense of respect for Hermione Granger. No matter what he threw at her whether it was calling her a Mudblood or as going as far as to call her a Bitch she never gave up on him. That was why he wanted to find her, because he would not give up on her, just like she had never given up on him. As quickly as possible Draco helped Weasley lay Brown on the cot and took off running back outside to the battle field.
Half way there he ran into Harry, "Draco have you seen Hermione." It took the first three months for Potter to call him by his given name even though Draco would never admit it it made him feel like everyone started to accept him even if he himself could not bring himself to call them by their given name. "No I was just on my way out to look again," Draco said quickly, "I was looking when I had to help Weasley carry Brown into the castle she looked badly hurt." He could tell Potter was stuck between a rock and a hard place. "Go help the others I will search for her."
Potter looked like he wanted to argue, but knew where his duty lied in helping with the wounded. "Don't come back unless you find her, you hear me Malfoy." Draco felt the emotion coming out of Potter and nodded his head. They parted ways and he ran from the protection of the castle. Some of the Deatheaters had escaped during the final battle and they were hunting to pick off a few of Potter's followers. He had to find Hermione before they did.
He wasn't sure when he started to have feelings for her, he just knew that they had appeared one day. When she talked to him he lost himself in her eyes. It mattered to him what she thought of him. Draco felt like a coward because he had yet to let his feelings be known to Hermione. At first he thought he would never stand a chance because he felt a certain chemistry between Weasley and her. He regained hope when Weasley started seeing Brown again and Hermione seemed fine with it. She had told him that her and Weasley were just friends, but he had seen the pain in her eyes and knew what she felt for him.
However, slowly he started to bring her around or so he wanted to believe. Lost in thought and the search for Hermione, he did not notice that he walk the entire field all the way to Hagrid's hut. Still no sign of her, he was starting to feel that he would never find her. Draco felt the tears wail up into his eyes and angrily swiped at them. If his father could see him now he would call him pathetic. He hadn't seen his father nor mother since he went into hiding with Professor Snape. He had no way of knowing if they were still alive or not.
Angrily he kicked at a pumpkin and was rewarded with a pained foot.He was about to turn and leave when he noticed a foot sticking out from behind it. Draco quickly jerked out his wand and circled around the pumpkin. What he discovered was not an enemy, but Hermione the sight of her made his breath stop. She was covered in blood, if it was hers or not he could not be sure. Draco was afraid to go to her, afraid there would be no pulse no breath coming out of her still form. Slowly he walked to her side and reach out with a shaking hand to checked for a pulse. His worse fears were confirmed when no pulse could be found. He laid his head on her chest, but could not hear the beat of her heart. Hermione Granger, the smartest witch of their generation was dead. The weight of it all made him wrap her in his arms around her still body and gather her into his arms.
Draco cried out in pain and anger as he held her close. He was going to hunt whoever did this to her and make them pay. He was going to make them know the same kind of pain he was feeling right now. He looked down at her peaceful face and gently kissed her lips. They were still warm, which means she hadn't been gone for long. He tried to gather his thoughts first he needed to get her back to the castle to Potter for a proper burial, then the asshole's life was his to take.
Draco slowly brushed a strand of hair from her face and slowly lifted her off the groung. Hermione felt so light in his arms and seem to fit perfectly against him. He would never know if she had had any feelings toward him nor if they could have made a go at it. He started to make his way to the castle when he heard voices coming his way. From the sound of the voices he couldn't make out whether it was friend or foe but he wasn't taking any chances. Deatheater were known for doing unnatural and horrifying thing to the dead and he was not about to let them do that to her. Quickly he made his way to Hagrid's hut and hid inside as they came into view. Gently he laid Hermione on the bed and walked to the window.
He saw the black robes and knew they were Deatheaters, "Are you sure you hid her over here?" Draco tightened his grip on his wand in anger about ready to rushed to the door only to be stopped by the voice of the other, "Yes I hid the Mudblood over here and remember the incantation to wake her up out of the dead sleep." He looked back at Hermione and sighed with relief. She was alive, his father had taught him about the Death Sleep Spell when he was a kid. It was a spell use to fake deaths during the Salem Witch trails.
"Where the fuck is the mudblood, Vincent?" came the gruffy voice of the deatheater Draco believed to be in charged. "I swear I left her right here." Draco stared at the two through the window as they continued to argue, "You Dumbass, we need that mudblood to bring back the Dark Lord or have you forgotten our mission. Vincent struggled for air, "I will use the polyjuice and search the bodies in the castle and sneak her out." He was released and flung to the ground, "For your sake you better hope she is there."
Draco watched as the deatheaters left, one going into the Forbidden Forest and the other heading toward the castle. He had to think fast. The Fuckers were after Hermione and what was with needing her to bring back the Dark Lord. He had to get her out of here and somewhere safe. The castle was off limits, with Vincent running around as Merlin knows who and he couldn't leave by the Forbidden Forest the other Deatheater was there.
He couldn't wake her up here cause you never knew how the victim would act while coming out of it. Some came out screaming and he couldn't have the Deatheaters coming down on him. Suddenly a memory from his childhood came to mind. The summer his father and mother took him to the lake house to spend two months. It was the first nonmagical vacation he had ever went on. His mother loved the place, she said it was the only time she truly felt free. He would take her there, no one but his family knew that it was there. Draco lifted Hermione into his arm and prayed that the wards had not been placed on grounds again. Closing his eyes he apariated both of them to the lake house.
Hermione's POV
Pain vibrated through her body as she came out of a dream like state. Slowly she opened her eyes and regretted it instantly as pain exploded in her head. Blurred visions dance before her eyes as she tried to focus on something, anything really in particular that will tell her where she was being held. At least she thinks she was being held. She couldn't think straight at the moment everything hurt like she had been in a fight or something.
The door off to the side opened and a boy with blond hair walked in, "Hermione you're finally awake." Fear shot through her and she jumped off the bed, "Who are you? What do you want?" Quickly she ran across the room, "You..you...you...whoever you are stay away from me." The boy stared at her, "Hermione it's me Draco. Calm down you've been hit with a spell...." Hermione picked up the closest object to her which turned out to be a lap and threw it at the boys head.
With incredible speed he moved out of the way and had her pinned against the wall before she could even blink. Hermione let out a high pitched scream and fought against the man that was holding her captive. He deflected every blow she tried to lay on him. Quickly he captured both of her hands above her head and pressed his body firmly into her's. "Hermione calm down I'm not going to hurt you," the sound of his soft voice made her look at into his eyes, "Please you have to trust me. "
"Why should I?" she fired back. The boy called Draco loosened his grip on her wrist, "Because I'm in love with you that why." The way he looked at her made her insides melt...wait a minute what the hell was she thinking she did not even know who this fucker her could be a killer or worse. However, the look in his eye compelled her to trust him so she slowly nodded. He release her and took a step back. "You really don't remember me." It wasn't a question as much as it was a statement.
She shook her head, "No I really don't and why should I what are you to me?" As soon as she said it she wished she could recall the words. The pain reflected in his eyes and pierced her heart. A part of her wanted to go to him and comfort him, however the other part was telling her to be cautions.
Draco's POV
Selective memory was a major side of the Death Sleep Spell, he just didn't want to believe the she really couldn't remember him. He couldn't say that it hurt cause it hurt more than he wanted to say. Draco had finally gotten the courage to tell her he loved her and she didn't even know who he was."Listen Hermion..." She interrupted him, "Why do you keep calling me Hermione." Total memory loss was another side affect of the spell, however it was not common. "Because that is your name"
Hermione shook her head, "No that's not my name...my name is...." he voice trailed off as she tried to recall. Draco took a step toward her, "You don't remember anything do you?" Suddenly a look of fear came over her face and she started to shake, "I can't remember....I can't remember." He gently took her into and made shhing sound to try and calm her, "It's going to be alright Hermione."
He felt her jerk out of his arms and distance herself from him. "How...Draco is it? How exactly is it going to be ok." She stared at him with tears in her eye, "Tell me how this is going to be ok. When I don't even know if I can trust you?" Draco had no idea when and where the idea came from it just suddenly popped into his head. It was the only way he could keep her completely safe. If her where about's ever became known then there was no telling what would become of her. He knew that Potter and Weasley would protect her with their lives, however would it be enough with Merlin knew how many deatheaters were out there looking for her.
Draco also did not know what they really needed her for. How was she apart of the rituial to bringing Voldemort back? He was curious but at the same time he did not want to know. Slowly he walked to stand in front of her and gently placed his hands on her shoulder, "Because I know exactly who you are?" Hermione looked into his eyes with the same trust he had seen before all of this had happened, "Who?"
If it became known that he had lied Potter and Weasley would stop at nothing to make him pay, but she was all that mattered right now and he was damn well going to do everything in his power to keep her alive. "You are the most brilliant witch of our generation.
You never back down even when the odds are stack against you." Tears filled her eyes and she gave a slight smile. "You're brave and kind hearted, when other claim that someone can't change you believe them."
Hermione looked him in the eyes, "What am I to you?" Draco lowered his hands to grab a hold of hers, "You are my life, my heart......" She gasped and stared at him wide eyed, "and you are my wife."
