Prelude
Two months into the new school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, potions Professor Severus Snape opened a letter from the Headmaster, Professor Dumbledore. He scanned through it quickly, then folded it and tucked it into his robe pocket.
Here we go again...
Dumbledore had ordered him to instruct yet another student in Occlumency. Only this time, it was a Slytherin girl, and he was supposed to teach her Ligilimency too. He was averse to being put in this situation yet again, for two years ago, he had been teaching Potter and Granger Occlumency. He had no desire to repeat the uncomfortable incidents that had ensued as a result.
Upon further reflection though, he considered several other factors. This girl was of his own house, and was quite unlike the other students of the school. She was a transfer student from a prestigious school in America, who had relocated to Hogwarts. Her chosen career path was that of a dragon rider, a dangerous task to undertake.
The girl herself, Viper Youngblood, was soon to be nineteen, a seventh year with ordinary waist-length mouse brown hair and long, layered bangs that hung in her bright, piercing blue eyes. She was tall and slender, and dressed in a way she called Gothic and Punk. She was something of an outcast in Slytherin, as she had refused to let house boundaries set limits to her choice of friends. It didn’t help that she seemed to prefer the company of other houses to that of her own.
Despite her differences, she was a true Slytherin, and demonstrated her cunning and intelligence by turning a trick to be played on her back on her would-be tormentors. Snape knew he would never forget the day he had walked into the Slytherin commons to find a group of tarred and feathered students. At first he had been livid, but once he heard the whole story, he was hard put to keep a straight face. From that point on, he couldn’t help but admire the girl a bit. Nonetheless, he had taken fifty points from Slytherin, and Viper was further alienated from her peers. She further impressed him by not letting it affect her. In all honesty, she seemed happier for it.
This girl obviously has intelligence, so perhaps it will not be as bad as I fear.

Isolated on the far side of her dorm, Viper finished reading a note from the headmaster. She placed it on her bedside table and went back to her homework.
Occlumency and Ligilimency huh . . . Sounds interesting. No doubt it’ll come in useful at some point.
As she finished her potions essay, she thought about Professor Snape, the one who was to give her the lessons. He seemed to favor her over most of the others, except Draco.
Heh, he didn’t look like it at first when all those stuck up pricks got caught in their own trap.
In fact, he had looked about ready to strangle her, until Draco stepped in and explained what happened. After that, she could tell he was trying hard not to smile. Even though he took house points, she had a feeling the punishment was directed at the pranksters and not at her.
She honestly didn’t care about all this, and it seemed to really piss of the other Slytherins. Of course, she didn’t care about that either, as it only meant they left her alone, which she was very happy for.
I can’t believe those spoiled brats think it hurts me to be isolated from them. Slytherins are such arrogant fools. Well . . . with the exception of Draco, and Snape.
