Summary:
The War was more than the whisperings. It split the Wizarding World apart, resulting in the ones who had gathered together to fight the battle that The Ministry refused to acknowledge to be caught in between. Cast as Dark Half-Breeds by the Officials of The Ministry and despised by the the Death Eaters they fought against, they become a sub-group of the Wizarding World.
Drawn further and further into their own, the Ones who remember the First War and the ones who are awaiting when they’ll participate in the Second, are a-washed into their own secrets and mysteries. And none more than Bill, Charlie, Oliver, Percy, Amy and their Allies who are undoubtedly keeping the biggest secret of all.
Set through the eyes of Amy, the journey unfolds as their lives are hit with a test of their ability to…not break their Curse.
This is originally a Nano that was never finished. While I did make the 50k word mark, I didn’t manage to get to the conclusion by the end of November. I hope that I can continue, posting as I keep at it.
I apologise for what may be a slightly convulated story this is. While I do have a general idea of this story, it is unfolding quicker than I can write. I am hoping to get it finished through Fanfiction and then edit it properly to get it more read worthy.
Thank you for your time.
…………………………………………………………………………………………..
- I still think that if we were to add a little bit of mayonnaise we’d be able to really get that floor slippery- muttered the voice of Oli inside of Amy’s mind as she stepped off the Hogwarts train.
Once her foot rested onto the platform, the throngs of students pushing and shoving each other immediately moved away, leaving her with more than enough personal space. She didn’t even need to clear her throat anymore. Or shoot any pointed glares. All it took…
And it hadn’t taken the student body as a whole –that- long to figure it out.
Or, at least that’s what she had been assured by Oli. Anto, as always, kept out of it as he couldn’t find any humour in the fact that Amy managed to scare everyone from the age of eleven to eighteen so much that just her presence was enough for an invisible bubble to surround her as she walked through the masses.
-Decided to not do something as elementary as simple water and soap?- said Anto, giving Oli a mental nudge.
Amy already knew that the pair of them was several carriages over. They couldn’t risk being any closer (caused the Elders to frown and yell and there had been quite enough of that last summer thank Merlin very much) and as there wasn’t exactly a certain cubicle that was theirs…
They could communicate well enough any way through Silence. Plenty of practice and…
As long as none of them made it any way discernable that they were speaking through Silence to –each other-, then… Wasn’t something else that the Elders could give out to them about.
Or hand even more Detentions their way either.
Oli and Anto deciding to communicate through Silence… *shrug* completely plausible.
Oli, Anto and Amy being on friendly terms publically (or at least within the ranks of The Members of the Resistances)… not.
Too many questions would be raised. Too many feathers ruffled and the lies carefully woven by the Elders…shredded to pieces.
And the Elders had gone to great lengths to make sure that none of those un-truths would ever be discovered until the Elders were –ready- for them to be.
And that wouldn’t happen until many, many years from now.
-I’m not allowed to have grown up a bit since then?- said Oli, almost managing to perfectly carry off the wounded Tone if it hadn’t been for the snort of laughter just before he spoke.
Oli, just as it was in the case of the rest of Amy’s Brothers, stayed with what was tried and tested. What worked. It didn’t matter to them if it was something as childish as the bare bones of what make something work (and in most of those cases that was anything to do with pranks).
All that mattered was that it got the desired result.
Even if it did end up with the entire Kata up in front of the Elders.
-I hardly think enough years have passed for you to have actually grown up enough to expand your mind beyond the most stable diets of a prank- answered Anto, adding in his own cursory better-than-thou hint to his voice.
A mocking of his own Public Persona he was forced to adhere to. What he would be expected to sound like if he had stumbled (Oliver Wood, roommate he may be of Percy Weasley would not willingly tell Percy when he was –up- to something after all. Had to remember that) onto a trick Oli was planning to play.
And earned him the self-depressive laugh of Oli in reply.
The lengths Oli would go to in order to try and…
Amy snorted softly.
The Elders were more than aware of what Oli would do to try and make sure that Anto didn’t fall into the trap of what he was publically expected to be. Ignore Percy at all points when the two of them were under the eyes of the student body (and more importantly of older Resistance Members and the younger) but when they were alone…
Or when the Kata was joined together, then…
It had been Oli who had dragged Anto out of the Gryffindor Tower during their sixth year (despite all students, and in particular all Young Ones as there had been a bloody mythical [someone really needed to update exactly what Creatures were still alive and what ones He and His Servants had control/agreements with]) slithering through the pipes (of all places) of Hogwarts. The one who had –asked- (hardly needed as Amy had known exactly how bad Anto had to be –helped-) Amy to act as a Watcher to make sure that not only could the two safely navigate through Hogwarts but also successfully get a long flight of playful broom manoeuvrings out of it as well.
But in the end, Anto had gotten three hours of pure bliss. The amount of good simply flying could do had never been documented, but Amy saw the effects it had on the ones who mattered.
Her own Kata.
And at one time…
Angrily shaking her head, Amy risked a glance towards the retreating forms of Oli and Anto. As long as she didn’t make it look as though she was focusing on the two (unless she was prepared to throw in the entire act of raised eyebrows, a snarl on her lips and a wand slipped into her right hand), Amy could allow herself that moment to console herself with the knowledge that two of her Kata were nearby.
She hadn’t lost them.
They were back with her and would be…until the end of the school year.
-Until I figure out a way to have the more –expressive- and –fun- parts of –our- kind of pranks added to the repertoire of when I work alongside the twins and Lee- muttered Oli as he politely moved aside (successfully bumping into Anto in the process and therefore being able to give Anto the smallest of squeezes) to allow a fellow Young One to move ahead –then I’ll have to stick with the basics-
A very pointed snort from Anto as he gave the Young One Oli was being –kind- to a superior look, complete with narrowed eyes.
-I hardly would call anything those three get up to as basic- hissed Anto –You do remember the entire blowing up of The Great Hall?-
-That barely caused a blip- said Oli –The Elders only screamed at them and gave them Detention because they feared the three might get grand ideas. Might talk to one of their Maji and learn of how to really cause an explosion-
-Sirius and James would freely give that out- said Anto –The twins and Lee wouldn’t even have to ask-
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Amy only had what she had heard from the rest of her Kata. What they told her of the Elders that at one point had…
And yes, there were barriers. Partly due to the age difference but also due to the fact that those Elders were –trying- to be mature (though most of that was down to sheer perseverance of Remus Lupin.) And then of course there was…
At one point, Bill had mentioned that there was a Pack photo of all of them. One photo only, kept in the Kanzai’s bedroom.
That was it.
And that the Pups of The Marauders were aware that before the War had ended… Before That Fateful Night, there had been more adults…who had loved them.
But those ones…hadn’t survived.
And the remaining Elders wouldn’t speak of them.
-I was thinking of leaving a little…-present for them to find- murmured Oli –Allowing a few days of course for them to figure it all out. But once they do…-
-You are not –helping- them with any of our little gifts- said Anto.
-Bill wouldn’t argue- said Oli –Get his vote-
-But Charlie would- said Anto –and you know full well that Amy will make sure Charlie is completely aware of this…decision of yours-
-She wouldn’t-
The slightest of pauses.
The undeniable proof that Oli was weighing up exactly what he knew about Amy and how she would react if she was faced with such a… dilemma. And then…conclusion.
Not in his favour.
-Would you, Amy?-
So, here came his wheedling tone as if that would make her suddenly swing to his point of view and not pull up everyone she could to –not- give Fred, George and Lee more ammo in the prank war.
Not that the three really needed it. They were quite resourceful, adept in their thinking and sheer geniuses at using simply every-day items to cause utter and complete chaos. But…
There were enough pranksters puttering around Hogwarts and the various other places Hogwarts’ Resistance Members stayed. There didn’t need to be more.
And there certainly didn’t need to be more pranksters like The Marauders… or the Weasleys (Bill, Charlie and Oli).
But as Oli already knew what Amy’s answer was, then there really shouldn’t be any need for her to…
Amy rolled her eyes slightly (causing two Second Years to scuttle into a wall in an attempt to escape the Big Mean Slytherin –Bitch of Hogwarts-) as she settled back into her stride. Into the movement of her body that was recognised all over the school (subconsciously and with only one glance in her approaching direction) and made her way to the –supposed- Horseless Carriages.
-Amy?-
She snorted.
-Don’t bring me into this- Amy grumbled, watching through narrowed eyes as the Thestral attached to the closest carriage to her turned its head to stare back. Blank, nearly dead-looking eyes catching hers as Amy…shivered.
Another reminder.
Another sharp round of painful memories of what…used to be.
Of what she used to have.
-Well- cut in Oli’s voice from several feet as he stepped into the carriage –since we will undoubtedly need your key to get at this stuff…-
The pause was enough to draw Amy out of her past. Of their past.
To break the gaze with the Thestral and to decide on her own carriage to ride into Hogwarts. Unlike in the case of Oli and Anto (though it was more due to Oli being there that drew in the scurrying forms of the other students than Anto), hers remained empty except for her.
No one willing to ride with The Slytherin Bitch.
Just as Amy wanted it, though she would have preferred if one of Kata could at least be there with her.
But the Restrictions…
But the Silence could be enough of a glue, to keep the Kata from disintegrating into nothing over the Restrictions. Being able to at least talk to each other, to still be able to continue having their special private conversations, even with the rest of the World refusing to allow…
-When exactly did you plan on informing us that you needed a key?- muttered Anto –Before or after you had gone as far as to- For Fuck sake! If that stupid idiot says one more word I will kick his brain in!-
-Anto!- snapped Oli –He’s not an idiot! That’s reserved –only- for The Old Idiot! Or The New One!-
-I am perfectly aware of exactly what the requirements are for being regarded as an idiot- said Anto –and that stupid imbecile is quickly heading in that direction-
-Then he’s an imbecile- said Oli –and rightly so. But don’t call him a bloody idiot. That…-
The growl became more prominent.
More urgent.
Oli may not be a Wolf but he bloody well knew how to imitate the sound. He’d spent most of his life around Wolves.
And he was a Shifter.
But still…the entire attitude was understandable. There was a reason why The Minister was given the sole right to the title of Idiot. And it wasn’t something…lightly thrown around either.
But Anto…
He couldn’t handle being surrounded by crowds for the most part, unless it was his own Kata and their Allies. And even then, he was…quiet.
Add in his Public Persona and…
Well, none of the students who had followed Oli into the carriage were exactly Anto’s cup of tea. They weren’t Oli’s either but due to Oli’s Public Persona (and his exceptional ability to be friendly with almost all of the Young Ones)… He could carry it off.
Other than a few curse words through Silence to the select few…
No one else would ever know.
-Fine then!- snarled Anto, his entire voice…nearly purring with venom –So shut him up so I don’t have to spend the next fifteen minutes listening to his asinine prattle-
A loud snort from Oli and then…
-Well, since you ruled out a simple Silencing Spell last time- drawled Oli, a clear indication of how silly he thought that refusal of such a decent problem solving idea –then how about one of those –songs- of yours-
The proverbial slap on the back of the head from Anto, unable to do anything more when there were other Young Ones (not of their own Kata or any of their Allies) around them. A burst of pain in Oli’s head…
And –poor- Oli unable to do anything more than shut his eyes for a moment. The only sign allowed as otherwise…
-I am not letting any of those so-called songs be given anything more than a nano-second of my time- said Anto –and after the last one he so kindly got stuck in your head…-
There were, after all, only so many times someone could have –The Ants Go Marching- running through their head (undoubtedly leading to it being murmured under their breath) before planning on not only their own suicide but the one who –gave- them such a gift as well. And the small point of the various inventive ways to rhyme the words with did not help matters.
As Anto had stated to Charlie when the older Male had laughingly told him so.
-You really think that would cause any damper on any of Oli’s plans?- cut in the cool voice of Penny, a slightly softer volume to her voice as she slunk into Half-Silence.
She was answered with a snort from Oli as the sounds of grumbles from another filled their heads.
-The last time you tried to challenge Oli, Penny- cut in the other voice of a Male, a warning tone held but not constructed to its fuller form due to Penny’s Higher Status within their Kata.
Though it wasn’t as if Cedric, just as any other Lower Ranking Member within a Kata/Group, wasn’t able to make his point completely clear when need be. Or enforce it when he wanted to. But… undoubtedly this time it was being withheld due to Penny’s current…temperament.
The closest thing to a visit between herself and Brian had ended all too quickly for her, and the distance between herself and her Mate…
-I won- replied Penny, the air of Female being thrust forward as if the entire logic would follow that there could have been no other outcome. She was Female.
Therefore, she had won.
And always would.
It was an argument, as of yet, that the rest of her Pack seemed more content to weather than actually argue, but one day…
One day Penny would learn that even this could not be assured.
Just like Amy had.
-The entire spare room had been reduced to near splinters, Penny- said Oli, who did not have such a conundrum as Penny wasn’t part of his Kata and therefore could be subjected to the –way things are- -and the only reason I backed down was due to the quick feet of McGonegall thundering down the corridor towards us-
An always nearly heart-wrenching shot, even though they had grown up with the Elders and therefore could usually time it so that their punishments could be lenient when the Kata wanted them to be. But knowing that this would cause trouble and experiencing it were too completely different kettles of fish, and as the Males, in general, lived in a world where they allowed themselves to be carried away…
The Males never realised the consequences until the Elders were already bearing down on them.
-You still gave in- said Penny.
And that would all be down to the lesser of evils. Harsh enough for the Katas to have a Detention thrown their way by the Elders for causing such a mess due to an –altercation-, but add in pissed off Female who hadn’t been warned beforehand that the Males didn’t have enough sense to see where this would lead (and considering how long the Males had known their Females, they should be able to spot the signs by now), then all Males were fair play.
And it was hardly as if any other Females would consider preventing their fellow Female from doing anything to said Males.
Add in the fact that there were only two Females between the Katas, and Oli’s chances of still breathing for not only being the reason for the two Groups being in Detention (the Female of course would refuse to recognise that she had any hand in it) but also for not backing down when he was clearly in the wrong (at least in the Female’s opinion anyway) and…
It had been the exact same dance Amy used to expertly play. When there were more Males surrounding her and herself and the other two Females could…
But now she could no longer indulge. The Kata was fragile enough as it was, and too many days it was almost as if it would only take one argument for the Kata to break apart.
There could be no chances of Amy inserting the superiority of her Female Status on her Males. Of blindly refusing to see anyone else’s point of view but her own.
She had to lead in order to make this Kata…survive.
Petty squabbles could not feature in it.
-Thank Merlin- broke in Anto, relief pouring in as for one moment, the conversation battering back and forth between Oli and the three other Young Ones who had followed them into the carriage slipped in. Hardly anything interesting, and hardly anything that would need to be constrained by Silence…
All five were Young Ones after all.
-Showing off- said Anto, somehow managing to catch that train of thought through the various threads of Silence –thinks it proves that they are mature if they’ve already conquered it… Instead of proving I should have kicked them out-
-You know full well that Percy Weasley would do no such thing- said Oli, as their voices became slightly more hurried and distracted (undoubtedly as the pair slipped out of the carriage) –He’d humph under his breath a lot and keep his nose stuck in the large textbook on his lap, exactly as you have just did-
A snort.
-Should have that one little allowance- muttered Anto in reply.
-You’d still have to figure out a way of making it acceptable, especially in the case of the Elders- said Oli –and that is where you’ll run into the trouble-
Even Amy, all of those meters away from the pair, knew that Anto was barely able to hold back from rolling his eyes publically.
-A simple nudge against you- muttered Anto –followed by a quick fight and that will give me an opportunity to throw a book at you-
-Anto!- hissed Oli, though his note of derision was interrupted by the barely held back laughing tone at Anto…
Anto over-riding his own will of strength (his tendency was control and unless there was a good reason to allow a tide of anger to overwhelm him, then…), that was a note to put into a calendar. And undoubtedly, Oli would.
It was very rare when the unstoppable wave of Common Sense was put aside by Anto so that he could… rage against the unfairness and respond in kind. By being childish.
-Percy Weasley would not –throw- a book!- managed Oli as his sniggers got the better of him and it roared through their heads.
-And then if you were to –bump- against the imbecile- added Percy, lost in his own little world that definitely didn’t feature any small moments of Oli actually using what little Common Sense he had –that would shut him up and I wouldn’t have to resort to worse methods-
-Ooh- said Penny’s voice –does this involve pink paint by any chance?-
No. Not even close.
Despite the closeness between the two Katas, it had never returned to what it used to be. Before Back Then, when each Kata had spent their lives practically living in each other’s pockets, nearly every one of their secrets was passed back and forth like a stormy ocean. Details of worries, problems, potential futures and pranks…
All known nearly complete.
But once there was one difference in lives, distance in time and space and the two Katas… no longer had what they used to.
And so the pranks that were pulled during Back Then, were only known by the bare bones of the Weasley Kata’s Allies. The Black Rose Kata knew of an incident that involved pink paint and a bunny but not of…
None of the Allies were aware of the little additions that made it so…
Such as the little added benefit simply having a swinging pendulum added to each pink ear.
Or the extra spring in an un-mentionable spot that gave it added…movement.
But that was their Pack. Master-minds of complete mayhem.
Even the Females.
And they did protest about that.
The Males had dragged them kicking and screaming into playing a part with these pranks. None of the Females had willingly agreed to.
They had had to.
Otherwise the pranks the Males –created- would have been even worse.
-Quiet- said Anto –Don’t encourage him-
Soft laughter.
-Oh Sweetie- said Penny –if it in any way involves nefarious means then I want in. And if there –is- pink glitter paint…?-
-There is no bloody fucking pink paint!- growled Anto, and a sudden hiss erupted from the groups of students slowly making their way towards The Main Entrance into Hogwarts (who in Merlin’s name would scurry happily back into school?).
Giggles.
Oh, for the love of…
What had Anto done?
Amy closed her eyes.
And it didn’t bode well with Oli –losing- control like that.
Amy sighed.
-Should retract that, I believe- said Penny –It wasn’t a good idea to have either of those Young Ones in such close proximity-
-You think?- said Anto –The two of you had a carriage all to yourselves-
And there was no reply to that.
How could there be?
This went beyond the simple teasing of all of them finally being in close proximity to each other again. Summer months never gave the same –security- as only the ones with Public Friendships could be together.
And even then, they were restricted with the Public Relationships.
And for Anto to be falling apart within minutes of arriving at Hogwarts?
There was still so much to get through before Anto could retreat to the bedroom he shared with Oli (the only two Gryffindor Seventh Years). The long and –fun-filled- adventure as the students refused to just stop talking and settle down. The entire announcement by Dumbledore as McGonegall ushered in the new First Years.
And then the Sorting.
Merlin, if she had any –say- in all of this, she’d just follow what her natural instinct was. Grab a book, prop it up against the nearest goblet and read while the Sorting Hat figured out exactly where all the students were –housed- until they finally graduated.
Some were easy.
The corner of her lips snarled.
McNair’s offspring (an unfortunate decision for McNair in more ways than one) had barely had to have the Hat touch a strand of his hair to shout out:
‘Slytherin.’
But others…
She had been one of the more –difficult- ones. The Sorting Hat had dithered back and forth, when it wasn’t giving her sly little comments of exactly where her Brothers would prefer her to be Sorted, until Amy had lost her temper with it and…
It wasn’t as though the House she had been placed in was the best one. But it served several purposes: one being that at least she could –handle- being surrounded by these numbskulls. If her Brothers had gotten their way she would have had to…
And, though she despised the new orders handed down to her upon being Sorted into Slytherin, it did mean… There was a very definite way of making sure that she could protect her Brothers to the best of her ability.
Unsurprisingly, none of her Brothers saw this.
They’d still have preferred for her to be a Gryffindor Bitch (despised by all students) than a Slytherin One. Even if they couldn’t interact with her.
Closest they ever got was through carefully skilled Full Silence between them. It began as the only way for any of the Kata or their Allies to talk on the First Day of school to her, but when the Elders had constructed their first real plans for Anto…
It had been broadened out to include him as well.
There were less of them now. The Older Members of the Weasley and Black Rose Katas had Graduated from Hogwarts a few years before and been Sent Out into the World to take up their Posts. And despite the knowledge of the Older Ones of the significance of the 1st of September (the re-union of both of the Younger Members of the two Katas), it was rare when a Full Silence could be achieved between them on that day.
And they no longer had the companionship to make the time go faster. At one time…
Amy gave a slight shake of her head as she settled at her usual position on the Slytherin Table (the furthest point from the Elders’ and not solely for the nefarious purpose of causing trouble as the Elders seemed to believe she constantly did). It was, as always, empty, with two seats between her and the next Slytherin student.
More for the own physical well-being of the other Slytherin, than hers.
The Slytherins knew better than to –attack- her for the most part.
Every now and then, they forgot.
-Hmm- murmured Anto’s voice, the temper he had displayed before mellowed down to be tinged with… Worry? –Does anyone know why the Young Malfoy Brat is fainting to the amusement of his fellow…students?-
-So now we’re wasting our time watching Draco Malfoy?- said Cedric –I’ve got better ways to get through this entire ceremony than bother with anything to do with him-
Amy carefully craned her head to watch Draco Malfoy and two cronies (if he ever was to follow his father’s footsteps he would need some with more intelligence than Crabbe and Goyle) appeal to the crowd of fellow Slytherins around him. Or, Draco Malfoy playing to the crowd as Crabbe and Goyle appealed to Draco Malfoy’s ego by making sure that all attention was on him.
In that way, Draco Malfoy was perfectly falling his father’s path.
And unfortunately, Amy couldn’t…
With a screech, Malfoy parted the crowd as he made a very feminine faint (nearly seemed to be to be too perfect to not have been practiced or used beforehand), complete with a high-pitched secondary scream as he fell to the ground. The point to the opening of the circle of Slytherins came apparent once Amy followed their gaze.
Harry Potter.
Shit.
A very white, nearly trembling (though all the Training he had been put through over the years had at least made it harder to notice so point it of him) Harry Potter standing still as he stared back with narrowed green eyes. A slight clenching of the jaw (anger or embarrassment to whatever Draco Malfoy was portraying) but outwardly…
The perfect attitude and standing of any Resistance member.
Unless of course, knew what to look for.
Such as how Hermione Granger was slightly too close to Harry Potter. Her body was carefully slotted behind him, with her right hand gently resting on the back of Harry Potter.
Perfect stance to give Harry Potter her silent support, and to act in a more physical way if needed.
And then there was Ron Weasley.
Perfectly fitting into the role of the boiling hot tempered Gryffindor, with the more obvious fighting pose a few steps ahead of Harry Potter and his wand outstretched. The Young Male’s eyes flashing as a string of wholly inappropriate (in the Elders’ view of course) settled on his lips.
It would only take one –mistake- and the two Groups…
Amy’s eyes flickered over to Seamus Finnegan, Dean Thomas and Neville Longbottom.
Before sighing.
Yes.
All three were in various degrees of preparing themselves to attack, or defend as was the case of Neville Longbottom. Not so easily…angered.
-I do not recall there to be anything particularly dangerous during the train ride- muttered Penny, before quickly adding –and yes, I am including the entire slowing down of the train because of the supposed inspection-
-There were Dementors- whispered Anto as he visibly shivered.
With Amy following the motion a moment later.
Dementors.
Dementors meant…
Proof of exactly how weak she was.
-Exactly how far did the Dementors get before they were…escorted out?- said Cedric.
-You mean banished- said Penny –and it certainly wasn’t that far. They didn’t even manage to get anywhere close to our carriage-
-There was a change in plans?- said Oli as he allowed his own wand to slip into his hand should he be –forced- to interfere.
Not that it ever took much for Oli to cause the Slytherins pain and humiliation. And the years had only gifted him with even more ideas of what was possible.
-The Elders are looking particularly grim- said Anto, as he made a show of glancing up from his book (the Elders couldn’t argue against this too much other than the insist that he at least put it away during the Sorting as Percy Weasley followed –all- the rules), giving a disapproving snort at the sight of the Young Ones and Malfoy before muttering:
‘Grow up and stop taking the bait. They’ll never learn.’
It earned him unimpressed glare from Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas (the closest of the Gryffindor Pups to him) as they darted over the Gryffindor table to be able to give Harry Potter full support.
It was a bloody miracle that none of the Elders had noticed it yet, though when Amy gave them a quick glance…
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
-The Elders have been looking particularly grim ever since they supposedly agreed to allow the Hogsmeade Train be boarded by the Dementors for an inspection- said Penny –Merlin knows what the Idiot and his Lapdogs were hoping to accomplish or gain by doing so. Hardly as if any of our Kind who are in Hiding are travelling to Hogwarts-
Amy felt Penny’s gaze on her for a moment.
-Or at least- she added –anyone who they could shout about publically without ending up in a worse situation with The Resistances than they are already in-
-Anyone know of who was present in the carriages the Dementors did –inspect-?- said Anto.
The closest to a Silent shrug as possible was passed around.
-They only managed the last two carriages of the train- said Oli.
-That’s usually where the twins and Lee hang out- said Cedric –haven’t made it official or anything, but ever since their Second Year…-
-Always filled to the bursting point for the most part- added Penny –what with all their hanger-on’s and all-
Oli snorted.
-That’s very bad English for you, Ms. Penny- he muttered.
-Bugger off- snapped Penny.
-Well they have been in too much of a secretive mood the past couple of days to be really looking for lots of attention- said Anto –Would want privacy, other than-
Fuck.
It wasn’t a ton of bricks that hit her. It wasn’t pain she felt, but the feelings of every single one of her nerve endings seizing up. Of her body tensing at that thought.
But they should have figured it out upon the first murmur of Dementors. Trouble, just like it had with his parents, flocked to…
Harry Potter wouldn’t even have been looking for it. For once.
Just minding his own business (if it could be called that considering that the lot of them were planning yet another prank) and then…wham.
And it had to be Dementors.
Merlin, exactly what did Fate have against… all of them?
Again.
And why did it fucking well have to be against the Pups? There was enough drama without adding them to the equation.
If Amy ever –ever- came face to face with Fate, that so-called Higher Power was ending up with more than just a bruised lip.
There had to be a way to extinguish one of those irritating Gods.
Amy closed her eyes briefly as she heard the commanding voice of McGonegall step in as a Voice of Reason, not only of the near fiasco between Harry Potter and his Kata, and Malfoy but also of the slowly impeding urge of Amy, Oli, Anto and their Allies to…interfere.
And not in any way of their Public Personas would follow.
This was the –need- to protect the Young One.
Fuck the orders of the Elders.
‘Mr. Malfoy,’ McGonegall’s voice rang out (the acoustics of this Great Hall was perfect to –help- McGonegall or any of the other Elders, enforce their will with the way it bounced off every wall and seemed to ring through the ears), ‘if you are quite finished with your theatre antics, the Sorting can begin.’
Draco Malfoy hardly looked contrite.
He couldn’t allow himself to look as though he had been embarrassed in any way.
A Malfoy could –never- let anyone else know that they had been humiliated, especially publically. And when it reached the ears of –certain individuals- that it was an Elder…
Lucius Malfoy would –not- be happy.
And undoubtedly this would somehow earn Amy the –honour- of having to endure yet another talk with Lucius Malfoy.
Somehow it would involve her.
And be all her fault.
Despite the fact that Lucius Malfoy was determined that his son would not be influenced in any way by the low morals of a Traitor Pureblood. And that any –meetings- between the two were always carried out when Draco Malfoy was not in the vicinity.
She could hardly –visibly- be around Draco Malfoy.
But Draco Malfoy slipped back into his designated place on the Slytherin Table (fast becoming the new Head of Slytherin House once certain students of the Seventh Years graduated as the last remaining kid of the Servants of His Inner Circles), soon followed by Harry Potter and his friends a moment later. After a few glares had been exchanged of course.
And then McGonegall called out the first name of a new First Year, and Amy let her own thoughts return to the front of her mind as priority. The Sorting held not interest to her. No one she knew was being Sorted as the last time she had paid it any attention was when Ginny Weasley had joined the rank of Students.
The pressing issue of Harry Potter being hurt by Dementors needed to be…solved.
He was being cared for. The group that should have surrounded him may have been depleted down, but Harry Potter…
They made sure he had everything he could ever possibly need (physically and mentally). He had loving parents, with throngs of Males and Females to act as aunts and uncles there for him, whether he wanted them to or not.
He had…everything.
But none of them could keep Harry Potter from suffering the effects of…
-Where was Hermione Granger?- said Amy, scratching her nose as she heard Oli immediately respond with a laugh at her signal –And Ron Weasley? Neville Longbottom?-
They would have been there as well, and yet…
Why had it been only Harry Potter that had been affected? Those three had been under the same…stress.
-Should have been with him- muttered Penny –but as it seems that they were not… Then it will be up to some bugs-
-The last time we attempted to place any kind of listening devices they were discovered- said Anto, in a long suffering voice though this was undoubtedly more due to Anto’s remembrance of the actual attempt.
-Never figured out that it was us- said Oli.
-Not the point- replied Penny –They have stepped up their security so how do you expect to be able to successfully manage it?-
A very loud, decisive snort from Oli.
-We’re older- he said –and has had much more experience in this-
-Doesn’t mean anything- said Penny –Kerbaski is seven years older than us and he –still- can’t successfully keep a Full Silence going for longer than thirty minutes-
-His record was forty-two minutes- said Cedric.
-Doesn’t count- muttered Amy as she turned her attention to the books she’d need from Hogwarts’ library. If she remembered correctly, there had been a small journal left by one of The Resistances’ Healers many years before that had contained a potion that would be of help to Harry Potter with his symptoms.
It had unfortunately not been something she had copied down in her own book.
-He may have fainted- said Oli –but his Connection was still there-
And then another metaphysical shrug.
-Until the Healers gave him that potion of course to heal him of the strain- he added.
-Still doesn’t count- said Penny.
Had the Healer left it in the clay pot in the far corner of the Forbidden Section of the Hogwarts Library? Hell, why couldn’t she remember?
She may have only heard it in passing (and had made a mental note to herself to get her hands on the journal so that she could write down the details), but she should still have enough of a memory to know where it was.
Damn it!
-Fine then- said Oli –Then how about this?-
-How about what?- said Penny, her superior Ravenclaw voice entering as she did everything but publically put her nose in the air.
-I’ll prove that he isn’t as much of a failure as you think- said Oli –Despite his failings, Kerbaski is capable and I’m going to use one of his methods to get those bugs into the Fifth and Third Year bedrooms-
The slightest of pauses, as Penny…
Well, Oli could hardly be serious. Only Amy knew Oli that this wasn’t something that Oli would joke about.
He took the entire ordeal of making everyone know exactly how capable he was as a Fighter of his age. And he wouldn’t ruin that by taking on an action that he –knew- would fail.
And that, of course, was completely different then failing due to what he wasn’t aware of.
Which seemed to be almost anything that Common Sense would have told him.
Just as it was in the case of all the rest of Amy’s Brothers.
Unfortunately.
Trying to get it into their stubborn brains that using a power cord, a candle, a bunch of roses and several lava lamps were not a sure-fire way of –proving- that a certain Lapdog was in love with his secretary just… completely passed over their heads. They’d actually thought that it would work.
And that the Detention the entire Pack had received as punishment was harsh for trying to expose true love. Even if it had been between Ministry Officials.
-You are willing to risk your near perfect record of pranking the Younger Ones?- said Penny –for that?-
The slightest of pauses.
-Anto- she said –I think you might need to bring him to Pomphrey-
-Oi!- said Oli –If you think I’m joking then give me a reasonable deadline?-
-Exactly how could I do that?- said Penny –There is no reasonable amount of time I could give you where it would be possible for you to successfully use one of Kerbaski’s methods-
-I disagree- said Oli.
A very loud sigh from Anto.
-Oli- said Anto –don’t get into another disagreement with Penny. You’ll lose-
-I can do this- said Oli, the Scottish accent trebling into his voice at his sheer indignation of Anto’s statement.
-I know- said Anto –but whenever you go head to head with Penny, you lose. Even if you are in the right-
A snort from Penny.
-He isn’t- Penny snapped.
-Penny- said Anto with a soft groan.
-I will not have Oli think that he can- said Penny as Dumbledore’s voice this time broke through.
The Silence was put on hold. Dumbledore taking control was the signal that the Sorting was –finally- over and after participating in Dumbledore’s idea of –jollying- up the first night back to school with his speech and the Hogwarts’ School Song, the two Groups could return to their conversation.
It would be an interesting night. None of them would be able to slink into any kind of…
‘Welcome everyone to yet another school year,’ said Dumbledore, spreading his arms as he stood at his podium, ‘whether you be returning student or a new one. Now, before we sink our teeth into this magnificent feast provided by the House Elves, I have a few matters to discuss with you; one of them serious.’
-Ministry- growled Oli.
-Could it be anyone else?- said Penny –Poking their noses back in just because the Elders refused to allow them to-
-Yes. Yes- muttered Anto, in an effort to prevent yet another rant.
All of them were more than capable of them, and over the years had even perfected the multiple ways that it could be extended to last longer than a lecture from the Elders back at them. But for the moment…
It wasn’t the time.
-The Idiot and his Lapdogs are once again throwing a hissy fit- said Cedric –nothing new about that-
With an added bite of course. His own anger over the entire Ministry as a whole.
‘As many of you are aware,’ continued on Dumbledore, ‘the Hogsmeade Train was subject to a search by Dementors.’
Ever so slightly, his blue eyes narrowed as the sparkle there slightly dimmed.
The entire…ordeal had caused several arguments among the Elders, most of them carefully played out away from anywhere Amy might have been lurking. But she knew of them. She didn’t have to hear it to be able to see the signs in the other occupants of Hogwarts distress.
And of course, there had been –discussions- at the houses of other Resistance Members. And those had been overheard by the Young Ones present.
It had all travelled back, allowing all the Pups to know –exactly- how much this was…angering the Elders.
And even Dumbledore couldn’t stop himself from slipping in public.
‘The Dementors will be temporarily remaining on the outskirts of the Hogwarts Grounds,’ said Dumbledore, ‘until further notice.’
The Elders had been very careful to make sure that none of the Younger Ones knew –why- The New Idiot and his Lapdogs were insisting on the Dementors around Hogwarts. Or, more importantly, the Weasley Kata.
With her close proximity to them (as Ryo had been unable to take her for the summer this year), Amy had done everything from directly asking the Elders to ambushing them. But other than a few little slips (she highly doubted that the Elders wanted her to know that The New Idiot and his Lapdogs were planning on passing yet another Bill that would restrict all Members of The Resistances even further on what they were –allowed- to do), the Elders had kept their lips tight.
And she hadn’t been the only one.
She had heard the rumours of exactly what Bill, Charlie, Brian and Josh had gotten up to through Smoke and Mirrors. Despite the inability to physically make their point, they were still more than capable of using their voice to inform the Elders of exactly what they wanted.
And of course, been subject to the growls and hisses of her Brothers when she was Contacted by them, or did the Contacting herself.
‘These Dementors are the reason for why a boundary is being placed around the Hogwarts Grounds,’ said Dumbledore, ‘one that will not be bended under any circumstances. This is indisputable due to the nature of the Dementors.’
Dumbledore’s eyes flashed as Amy’s body shivered.
Dementors.
Even the slightest mention of them pulled her too easily to the cold, bare walls of that cell. Of her attempts to hide from all that surrounded her, from the reality of it all, by pressing herself into a corner and wrapping her arms around herself.
It had never helped.
She was always still too aware of…
‘Dementors do not understand empathy,’ said Dumbledore. ‘They do not respond to cries of help or pleas. If you are caught in their path, then you will receive no second chances. Unless there are witches or wizards nearby who are there to protect you, you will be under their full influence .I am sure that I do not need to give anyone any further warning over the Dementors.’
As Dumbledore did a sweep over the various students in The Great Hall, Amy felt the slightest of tapping within her mind. An attempt from someone to Contact her.
And someone she knew.
Slightly cocking her head (she had a feeling that this was a –welcome back to Hogwarts- quick conversation from one of the older Members of her Kata or the Allies), she could feel the Silent Conversation being joined by Anto, Oli, Penny and Cedric as well.
-So?- said the Male voice with a derisive laugh –Anyone died yet?-
Anto snorted.
-No one is trying to break your record of giving an Other a near heart attack- he said.
-I did no such thing- said the Male –No matter what any of the Elders, Penny or Amy say. I was not trying to give the Other a death-like experience-
-I highly doubt that- said Penny –You have the restraint of an over-excitable terrier-
-Quiet you- said the Male –You know full well that I was simply informing the Other that he had the likelihood of managing to Curse me before I had his head rolling on the ground as an ant knowing that it was going to be trodden on-
-Ha!- said Penny.
-That would still be termed under the conditions of trying to give the Other a near heart attack, Josh- said Amy.
Not that he would ever realise that. He was stubborn, very close to what Amy had to face under the same kind of circumstances with Charlie and Bill.
Despite the gripping of Penny, Amy did have it worse. She had Four Males to her Kata. Penny only had three.
-Not when it was attempting to –help- the Other find his Common Sense- said Josh –or at least, what he would have available to him. Others are born with the bare minimum-
Oli’s snort of agreement.
-Which is why we have to use what we have to its full potential- said Penny –by not trying to cause an Other a reason to faint-
-Knocking his head and being unconscious for two hours- added Amy.
-None of it could be considered as my fault- said Josh.
-Oh, really?- said Anto –Exactly how?-
-Just doing my duty- said Josh –Not my fault that he took the warning the wrong way-
-But you know what Others are like!- said Penny.
-And you should have ignored him- added Amy.
Merlin, this was once again a point that was impossible for the older Males to understand. Both Amy and Penny had had the run-around of this exact same kind of conversation before, many times before, and yet…
Yet, they still tried to do the impossible and help the Males know when they had done wrong.
It was one thing that the two should really give up on.
They wouldn’t win it.
They couldn’t.
-He drew his wand- said Josh –Fair game-
-You know exactly how the Elders feel about that- said Penny –and how much trouble they are put under by the Idiot and his Lapdogs every time one of the Others go and complain to Their Ministry. Do you really want the Elders bearing down on us again because they’ve been forced to have a two-hour argument inside The Ministry again?-
A slight pause.
-No- said Josh after a quick conversation with himself over the pros and cons of trying to argue against Penny.
He shouldn’t have even had to think over it.
He knew that Penny had gotten him there.
Go Penny.
-Then don’t- said Penny before a hiss of:
-Wait! Dumbledore is up to something-
-Cedric-
-It’s obviously something we need to pay attention to- continued on Cedric –He’s giving all of us pointed looks. We need to hear this-
-But we already know about Dementors- muttered Oli –We’ve already had a –talk- with the Elders about our behaviour and exactly what we are not allowed to do with Dementors so close-
-You mean not to act like your usual roly-poly nutcase selves?- said Penny.
-Ha. Ha Penny- said Oli –Very funny-
‘And I am pleased to announce that we have a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher with us this year,’ said Dumbledore’s voice, though Amy could almost detect…
What was that?
It was almost as if Dumbledore was slightly…uneasy about the subject he was now going to broach.
‘May I introduce Professor Remus Lupin,’ continued on Dumbledore as Amy…
All of her breath left her.
She could feel her body fall upon itself as she slumped against the table, her two arms resting on the table top being the only prevention of her not banging her head against the wood.
It couldn’t be.
No.
The Elders couldn’t do this to her.
They couldn’t have-
‘Moony!’ shouted the voice of one of the Weasley twins from the direction of the Gryffindor table. ‘So that’s what you were hiding! You little so and so!’
-Lupin!- hissed Josh’s voice.
-Amy?- whispered Anto, as a warmth exuded from him to surround her –Amy?-
No.
This was just a dream. A nightmare. This wasn’t…happening.
The Elders couldn’t have agreed to have one of The Marauders here…in Hogwarts. This was her Safe Place. Her spot where she was protected from anything that could hurt her.
And that included the ones who reminded her of…what she used to have.
