The school year had just begun but much to Harry’s dismay he had already found himself with a scroll due in both Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Unsurprisingly, Hermione had finished both of her scrolls, and an extra one for Ancient Runes, days ago. Surprisingly, given his penchant for laziness, Ron had also finished his scrolls a few days ago, leaving Harry left to work on his alone in the library. Both Ron and Hermione had offered to keep him company, but he refused them, citing his desire to be alone as well as not wanting them to suffer for his procrastination.
Defense against the Dark Arts, once Harry’s favorite class, had been taken over by his least favorite teacher and Snape would not be content until he made the lives of his students, specifically Harry, as miserable as possible. Harry checked the time; it was already a quarter past midnight. He had been working for the past 5 hours and had barely finished one of the assignments.
Harry removed his glasses and sighed, leaning back in his chair as he rubbed his eyes. He stood up and stretched, his joints popping audibly as he did. A soft noise from a few bookcases down caught his attention, a muffled thud and a low mumbling. He had thought he was alone in the library, since he watched, what he assumed to be, the last of his fellow students leave earlier. As far as he could tell the sound had originated from the Muggle Studies section, which seemed even odder because no one ever took books from there. Making his way along the dimly lit bookshelves, not bothering to put his glasses back on, he made sure to be as quiet as possible to avoid alerting whoever had made the noise. His earlier encounter on the train with Draco had left him, understandably, a bit paranoid, and he reasoned that it was better to be safe than sorry.
The library was lit almost entirely by a few candles burning on various candle holders which didn’t make for the safest trip without his glasses on. Careful not to trip, he continued to make his way towards the origin of the noise until he found what he was looking for. He swore quietly under his breath as his foot hit the corner of a bookshelf, cursing the fact that he had left his glasses back with his books.
Someone was on one of the upper rungs of a ladder reaching for a book on the top shelf. He wasn’t sure but he felt like he recognized the petite girl. Her long blonde, almost white, hair seemed familiar but he just couldn’t place her without his glasses. He was so caught up in figuring out who she was that he only slightly registered when she stepped on the very top rung. It wasn’t until her foot slipped and she started to fall that he snapped out of his daze and in a flash he had his wand out.
“Wingardium Leviosa” he said, pointing the holly and phoenix feather wand at the falling girl.
She stopped in midair with her head only inches from the hard stone floor, causing her skirt to flip upside down giving Harry a glimpse of her powder blue panties before he looked away, his face hot. It wasn’t until he was able to put her right side up that he recognized the young Ravenclaw.
“Luna?!?!” Harry asked incredulously, squinting slightly to make out her face. “What were you doing up there?”
“Hello Harry” Luna said in her usual dreamy voice which extended and put odd emphasis on certain words and syllables. “I was just looking for a book. I don’t sleep much so I thought I might find a nice book to read tonight.”
She looked at him as though he were a bit dim; of course he realized she had been looking for a book. Overall she seemed unconcerned with the fact that Harry had just seen her panties, or that she would have certainly been killed if he had not been there to stop her fall. She made a point of straightening out her hair, although it only went from being really disheveled, to slightly less disheveled, her normal look. She, like Harry, was dressed in her school uniform, minus the cloak and tie. Harry’s own shirt was untucked from his slacks giving him a more casual look, the bottom peeking out from under the grey cardigan he wore.
“I didn’t realize anyone else was in here. You do know you could have just charmed the book down?” he asked, rather annoyed at her putting herself in danger needlessly.
“Well Harry, I like to feel the book before I choose, books have their own energy you see.” She said succinctly. “and I didn’t know you were here either.”
He was too tired to get caught in a conversation with Luna tonight, and he still had a lot of work to do. She bent down to pick up the book that had fallen, a huge leather-bound tome, but Harry was already headed back to his table by the time she straightened up. He sat down and put his glasses back on, blinking at the sudden clarity in his vision, he looked down at what was still left for him to do and sighed again.
Luna sat down next to him at the large table, placing her books in front of her and opening the largest one to a seemingly random page. Harry couldn’t help but glance over and look at her, not necessarily because she was pretty, although she certainly wasn’t ugly. He reasoned that she definitely had the capacity to be very pretty, as he had seen on the rare occasions that she dressed up. He was a bit stricken by how pale she looked even in the flickering candlelight. Her long hair was still messy, but that was hardly out of the ordinary for her.
He looked back down at his work and found himself unable to continue, almost as if her presence were a distraction in and of itself. It didn’t help that he had just seen her panties either, not that he thought about her in that way, he told himself admonishingly. It was just getting a view of any girl’s private bits would elicit some sort of response, he reasoned.
“Luna…” He didn’t know how to broach the subject of wanting her to go away and leave him to his work in peace. “I’m working here.”
“Yes… I can see that Harry.” She said, moving closer to him and looking down at the half finished scroll, her eyes scanning the parchment. “This is quite good, but it could use a few corrections here and there. You don’t mind, do you Harry?”
He opened his mouth to protest but she had already picked up the quill and started to make small corrections to his work. Her hand moved with a deft confidence and intelligence, and he couldn’t help but notice that her modifications did improve the overall quality of the assignment. He supposed she was a Ravenclaw for a reason. He couldn’t help but notice how little she blinked as he stared, and found himself wondering absently if she were blinking at the exact time he was and he was just missing it.
“There you go Harry,” she said, handing him back his quill.
He took it in his hand, but found that he still lacked the motivation to continue working, so he turned back to Luna, who was still staring at him, her wide silvery grey eyes meeting his green ones. Against his better judgment he decided that he would engage her in conversation.
“So… er… what do you have there Luna?” he asked, attempting to make conversation with the eccentric girl. Harry had decided that that was what she was eccentric, not loony, just a bit out there. Making a mental note to admonish Ron next time he made fun of her.
“It is a wonderful little book Harry, it’s called The Histories, it’s by Herodotus. Would you like to see it?” She asked.
“Uh sure Luna, sounds interesting” he said, as she had already passed the book in front of him.
The book smelled of old leather and parchment, a stale, musty odor that he had come to know very well after his years of spending time with Hermione. Harry couldn’t make heads or tails out of what he was reading. It looked to be in some ancient language. He pretended to read for a few moments, even turned a few pages, in an attempt to find something in English, before sliding the heavy book back to her.
“I knew you would like it Harry, Herodotus is known as the ‘father of history’. He was a very smart man for his time” she said accepting the book back in front of her but keeping her attention on Harry.
“Oh really?” He responded, it was all a little bit over his head.
“Some people say he made his accounts up though, I think it is rather closed minded of them to only believe in the things they have seen themselves.” She said, her voice was still distant but he thought he could hear a little more emotion behind her words.
There was silence between them for a moment that he didn’t know how to break. Instead he opted to give writing another try and picked up his quill again, then sighed, putting it back down after only writing a few words.
“You seem a bit distracted Harry, do you think it could be Wrackspurts? They are known to make your head all fuzzy” she asked with a note a curiosity and, strangely, worry in her voice.
“No Luna.” He said in a monotone. “…It’s just been a long year.”
His feelings were a bit mixed up at the moment. It had been a long year for Harry, hell it had been a long couple of years for Harry. Since he had turned eleven he had not been able to get through an entire school year without someone making an attempt on his life, and this year was already shaping out to be the same way. So he was distracted, he had a right to be. Sirius was gone, gone for good and he had barely even gotten to know him. He could feel the pangs of heartache as he thought that last bit.
“Is it about your godfather Harry?” she asked, her voice lowered slightly, almost gingerly. He hadn’t known Luna to display much tact before, but supposed that was what she was trying to do now.
“Could we just drop it Luna?” he asked, he didn’t want to lose his temper with her especially since he felt that she was attempting to show some compassion.
She agreed and he was glad to not have to go into it again. The chair she sat in wasn’t completely pulled into the table and Harry could see her socks, light blue and covered in small birds, which he assumed were eagles. Harry couldn’t help but note that her panties and socks were almost the exact same shade of blue, and wondered if that was a coincidence before pushing the image from his head and reprimanding himself for even having the thought.
“Jeez Luna, are they still taking your shoes?” he asked, he felt a little anger rise in the back of his eyes. He was tired and it felt like his mind was just looking for something to focus on, that wasn’t his dead godfather or his unfinished homework, and anger was as good an alternative as any.
“I’m sure they’ll return them at some point” she said distractedly, and he could see her wiggling her toes through the material of the socks.
“That’s not the point. They shouldn’t be doing stuff like that.” His voice had gone up a little, but it did make him mad.
Luna had been braver in the time he had known her than a lot of other people he knew, even going off to the Ministry to fight Death Eaters last year, with little to no proof that he was right. It wasn’t right for them to treat her the way they did, it made him want to rip some of there heads off.
“It’s alright Harry, they are just having a bit of fun. Besides I don’t mind it much, it gives my feet a chance to breathe.” She reasoned, attempting to placate him. “I don’t really like shoes much anyway, too constricting. Daddy says it is better to allow energy to flow from the ground into your body.”
“I don’t understand how you deal with it, Luna” he began, a bit calmer after taking a deep breath “I mean they call you names, pick on you, take your things and you still act like everything is alright. How can you be so calm about everything?”
He didn’t mean it to come out like that, but he didn’t know how else to phrase it. He reasoned that it would be no surprise to her. She must hear what people say. It is not like they went out of their way not to say it when she was within earshot.
“Well I’m not sure it would be much use to you Harry” she broke eye contact for the first time looking towards a far wall, almost as if she could see through it.
“What? Does it have something to do with the Crumple-Horned Snorkack or Wuggles or something?” he said, he didn’t mean for it to come out as sarcastic as it did, and he instantly felt bad for saying it.
“No Harry, I just think about you.” She said, matter-of-factly.
“Me?” he asked a bit shocked.
“I mean, people make fun of you Harry, during the Triwizard Tournament, last year when you were trying to spread the news about You Know Who, but you just kept your head up and did what you had to do. You taught us all how to defend ourselves and even defended the people who called you crazy.” She said, the normal dreaminess gone from her voice, replaced with a passion he had never heard from her before. “When I get down, I just think about how brave you are and I realize it is not such a big deal. I mean they’re only shoes.”
“Oh…” he said, he hadn’t realized it before but Luna looked up to him. Harry had become so used to people thinking he was an attention seeker, or worse some insane teenager, that he had forgotten that some people actually looked up to him. Not because of his scar or his history, but because of his accomplishments as a wizard.
“Thank you Luna.” He added quickly, her little speech had snapped him out of his self imposed funk. “I didn’t mean for any of that stuff to sound hurtful.”
“It’s alright Harry, and you are very welcome.” Her voice’s dreamy, distracted quality had come back, “By the way Harry, what’s a Wuggle?”
He found himself laughing out loud at that, and she soon joined him, he had never heard it before but she had a nice laugh, it was hard to describe. It was sweet and sincere, like she put her whole self into that laugh. In a way it was a very Luna laugh, she seemed to put her whole being into everything she did and believed in. He realized that this is the longest he had talked to Luna for, the longest they had been alone together. He was glad to have her company, and felt rejuvenated by that bit of laughter.
Harry went back to work, and Luna read through her books. They talked a bit as he worked, Luna read him a few of her favorite passages from the books she had. She described some of them as comedies, most didn’t seem that funny to Harry, but he found himself laughing when she laughed as she described the plots of them to him. They were all written in that strange language so he just took her word for the content and pleasantly refused whenever she offered to let him read one of them. Halfway through she even tried to convince him to remove his shoes and join her in being shoeless. He had relented after awhile and found it not to be a completely horrible experience. The hard stone floors were cool against the bottoms of his feet, and he felt himself flexing his toes subconsciously. He wasn’t sure about the flow of natural energy, but his feet did feel less constricted and he enjoyed the cool night breeze even if he was still wearing his socks.
The rest of his assignment went by painlessly, and he accepted any suggestions Luna had for the content of his work, and let her read over the finished product. She made a few minor corrections but overall she gave it her approval.
“Thanks for your help Luna, I don’t know how I could have gotten through this without you.” He said truthfully.
“It was my pleasure Harry. It was almost like we’re friends” she responded dreamily. “Like when I was in Dumbledore’s Army.”
“Luna we are friends” he responded, he couldn’t understand why she was so quick to assume they weren’t.
“Oh, that’s nice Harry” she said, her reply flat almost uninterested.
“Why would you think we aren’t?” he asked, “You’re one of the bravest people I know. I mean heck, we fought Death Eaters together.”
“I don’t know about that Harry. I don’t think I am very brave” she was still looking down at her book, “I just did what I thought you would do.”
“Well I appreciated it Luna, and you are brave, and bloody brilliant” he added smiling, he placed his hand on her shoulder in a friendly gesture.
Luna turned to look at him, her face was so pale, if hadn’t known better he would have thought she was one of the ghosts that roamed the halls of the school. Harry could sense a little bit of conflict in her face though. He didn’t know how he could tell, he figured her eyes were a little less wide then usual and there was a small blush in her cheeks.
“You think I’m brilliant Harry?” she asked, her voice was almost a whisper.
“Of course, I don’t know how we would have gotten to the Ministry if you hadn’t suggested the Thestral.” He was just trying to boost her confidence, but he found that he meant every word of it. “And you handled yourself brilliantly against the Death Eaters and the Inquisitorial Squad.”
“Harry I…” she began.
“It’s getting late, we’ve been talking for two hours, I really need to get some sleep before class.” He hadn’t meant to interrupt her, but he honestly hadn’t heard her talking, her voice had almost been inaudible. “Do you need me to walk you back to the Ravenclaw dorms?”
“No, Harry I…” she started.
“Well be careful when you are walking back,” he said, and then added “and don’t be so down on yourself. You’re a great witch and a good friend.”
He gave her shoulder a light squeeze, as if trying to emphasize the point. Harry wasn’t paying attention to her face or the rainbow of emotions that were playing across her features. He stood up to leave, grabbing his scrolls, but he felt a tug on the bottom of his shirt as he turned to go. He looked back and saw Luna standing up as well, it was her that was tugging on his shirt.
He opened his mouth to ask if she had changed her mind about walking back with him, when she closed the distance between them in an instant. Her lips pressing against his own, which were already slightly parted. He could feel the soft warmth of hers and found his mind going a little fuzzy, and wondered vaguely if that was what it felt like to have Wrackspurts in your head. The thought quickly faded as he could still feel Luna’s fingers playing at the bottom of his shirt. The kiss lasted for what felt like a few minutes but was more likely only a few seconds, and she pulled back. When he looked at her, her eyes were slightly closed; her cheeks flushed pink, and she was nibbling on her lower lip slightly.
Luna’s eyes widened, almost in shock at her own actions, or maybe that was just her normal expression Harry thought.
“Harry I… I didn’t mean to… I don’t want…” her voice was quivering a little, “Harry I’m sorry.”
She ran off without another word, leaving her books and Harry behind. When Harry regained his ability to form coherent thought back he found his mind racing. Several questions racing back and forth in his head.
“What was that about? Did Luna Just kiss me? And more importantly did I just enjoy it?” he thought out loud.
Harry wasn’t sure why she had run away. Had she been embarrassed, that wasn’t like Luna, especially when she had shown no sign of embarrassment when he had seen her underwear. Whatever the reason, had she stayed, he wasn’t sure he would have been able to continue the polite conversation so he figured it was best not to go after her until he thought this whole thing through.
Luna ran all the way back to the entrance of the Ravenclaw dormitory, finding herself slightly out of breath when she finally reached the statue outside of the common room. Leaning against the wall next to the marble eagle, she pressed her hand to her chest feeling her heartbeat thumping wildly. She knew it was only partially due to the running, and tried desperately to will herself to calm down.
“I can’t believe I just did that. What was I thinking?” she asked no one in particular as she paced back and forth near the entrance.
“You were thinking that you like him,” a little voice in her head responded.
And it was true she had liked him, she’d realized it during a meeting of Dumbledore’s army. Harry had come up next to her, pressing his body against hers and grabbing her by the wrist. He had just been attempting to show her the proper wand movements and stance for a particular spell, but she felt her heart racing, and a familiar feeling in the pit of her stomach. When he let her go to move on to the next person, she found herself missing his touch, the warmth of his body against hers. She watched him for the rest of that meeting and for the weeks that followed, it wasn’t hard to come to the conclusion that she was falling for the boy, but she knew nothing would come of it. Luna didn’t know if Harry had a particular ‘type’ but she knew she wasn’t it. Harry was smart, kind, brave, talented and, at least in Luna’s mind, absolutely gorgeous.
Even if by some chance Harry did find her attractive, she still had to consider her best friend Ginny. She might not have admitted it to herself, but Luna could see the way the redhead looked at him whenever he was around. It wasn’t as if she was jealous of Ginny’s love for Harry, she thought they would make a great couple, she was just upset that she would not get to explore her feelings for him. She considered asking Ginny if she would be upset if she told Harry about her feelings for him, or even if she would be willing to share him with her, but she didn’t want to risk losing her best friend or for Harry to think she were nuts. This brought her mind back to what happened tonight, she had kissed Harry, just the thought of it made her heart race again. It also made her feel as if she was going to throw up, she had taken things too far, now he wouldn’t want to speak to her, would think she was a freak, and then he would tell Ginny and she would never speak to her again.
She was barely able to answer the question the statue posed, but she eventually made it inside and made her way up to her room. All of her roommates were already asleep so she stripped quietly, stopping once she was left in only the powder blue panties she had on. She couldn’t keep herself from smiling as she thought about how Harry had seen them. Wondering if Harry liked them, she played with the waistband, wishing she could have asked him. He already thinks you’re a loon, she chided herself, do you want him to think you’re a pervert as well? Luna didn’t consider herself a pervert, she realized she had urges just like everyone else, and maybe she did masturbate a bit, well quite a bit, and maybe even sometimes she imagined Harry was there. Not that it mattered, she remembered, he wouldn’t be talking to her again after what she did in the library.
She grabbed a sleeping gown and slipped it on over her head, before sliding into her bed for the night. Sleep came slow for Luna Lovegood, every time she thought she was dozing off she found herself thinking about the feeling of Harry’s lips pressed against hers, which, in turn, brought back the realization that he probably considered her an even bigger freak now. She touched her fingers to her lips imagining she could still feel the heat from his. She did manage to get to sleep using an old Muggle trick her mother had shown her of counting sheep in her head.
Harry didn’t really remember the walk back to his dorm room that night or changing into his pajamas, but he did recall lying awake on his back for a while. Thoughts swam through his head, he could never really figure out girls, and Luna was definitely the proof of that. It had been a nice kiss though, he thought, better than the one he shared with Cho, although it had ended almost exactly the same, with the girl running away almost in tears. He decided he wouldn’t tell Ron, lest he be the butt of his jokes for the rest of his life. After awhile spent thinking he reasoned that Luna must have had a good reason for doing it, well a good reason by Luna’s standards. Maybe it was an obscure remedy for Wrackspurts or a way to keep away some other type of creature he hadn’t heard of. He made a mental note, as he fell asleep, that he was going to have to clear it up with her in the morning. He didn’t want to have any weird tension between them.
The sky above him was filled with clouds of the whitest and fluffiest variety, and for a moment he just watched them float by while on his back, hands behind his head. He hadn’t noticed the presence of another person or even the pressure of their head on his upper arm until they spoke, pale hand pointed skywards.
“That one looks like an Acromantula, Harry.” The dreamy voice said, and he squinted up at the sky.
“I don’t see it, looks more like a cloud shaped blob to me Luna” he replied, pointing in the same direction.
He hadn’t needed to look to see who it was laying against him, he knew instinctively, well dream Harry knew instinctively that it was Luna. They were on the grounds of Hogwarts but they weren’t wearing their school uniforms. Harry was wearing a simple white t-shirt and a pair of khaki shorts and Luna wore a strange, bright pink and green striped sundress. It would have looked out of place to Harry if it hadn’t been a dream and if anyone else had been wearing it. The sun felt hot on his skin and it was Luna’s wistful voice that brought his attention back to the sky.
“You have to use your imagination Harry,” dream Luna chided him, “Now try again.”
“Alright, alright I’ll give it another go,” he looked around the sky until he found a suitable one, and pointing to it he said “That one looks like a mermaid.”
“Very good Harry, now that wasn’t so hard.” In the dream, Luna’s voice was soothing and peaceful. “Now what do you want as your reward?”
“Reward?” Harry responded, rather dumbly. “Um… I’m not sure.”
“Well I guess I’ll have to pick again, now won’t I?” she said, before turning her head and giving him a chaste kiss on the cheek. “Now do another one.”
Harry could feel himself grinning as he looked around the sky for another cloud to use. As he found one he tried to figure out what it look like.
“Um that one looks like a Centaur” Harry responded triumphantly, and this time he was rewarded with a kiss on his nose.
Harry went on identifying shapes in the clouds and Luna kept rewarding him with kisses. Starting with his ears and neck, and ending with his eyes and forehead. Harry found that he was quickly running out of animals he could identify, having already gone from the obvious ones like unicorns and trolls to lesser known ones such as hippocampi and manticore. He thought he would take a stab in the dark and hope that it turned out to be correct, since he was really enjoying his rewards. He raised his hand and pointed to a large oddly shaped cloud, slowly making its way across the sky.
“That one looks like a Crumple-Horned Snorkack” he said with confidence.
“Nice try Harry, but I think you’re just trying to coax more rewards out of me.” She replied in mock accusation. “Everyone knows Crumple-Horned Snorkack have three horns, not four.”
“I suppose that means I don’t get anymore rewards” Harry replied, and found himself genuinely disappointed.
“Nope, I’m afraid you’ll just have to settle for the consolation prize” she said, her mouth was close to his ear and he could feel her breath tickling his earlobe.
“Consolation prize?” Harry asked, again clueless.
“Yes Harry, consolation prize” and with that Luna dropped all pretenses and kissed Harry full on the lips again.
Harry melted into the kiss as they began to snog openly on the field, his arm wrapped around her waist and her hands playing alternatively with his hair and the back of his neck. His hands moved lower, and they stroked up and down her smooth pale thighs, sliding them up her dress, causing it to rise higher as his hand did. Initially he just cupped her panty clad arse, squeezing it as they made out. Eventually he opted to slide his hand into her panties, massaging her bare skin before delving a little further. He could feel her moist heat as he cupped her sex, and in response she broke the kiss moaning his name breathily into his ear. He ran a finger along her wet slit before plunging it inside her. The reaction was instantaneous as her moans became lower, and she began grinding her sex against his hand, trying to push his finger deeper.
“Oh Harry, Harry…. Harry… HARRY. Blimey Harry wake up!!!” Luna’s deep dreamy, silky voice changed into the harsh voice of Ron, waking him with a slight start.
“Jeez Harry, you must have been having some dream. I’ve been trying to wake you for 15 minutes, and you just kept moaning. It was pretty creepy.” Ron added, as he continued to dress himself.
“Yea, um I was just dreaming about Quidditch, I had just won the World Cup, and I was celebrating” Harry lied, saying the first thing that came to mind. Still jarred from the face and voice of the girl he was snogging turning into Ron's
“Must have been celebrating with Fleur and a few of her friends, only way you would be making those sounds” Ron replied, cheekily “I remember I had a dream ‘celebrating’ like that a few nights ago, almost had to change my sheets.”
“Wow that was disgusting Ron” Harry said, trying to prevent that image from entering his head and scarring him for life.
“Well you better get up and dressed quick or you’ll miss breakfast” Ron called back as he made his way out the door.
Harry looked around his shared room and saw that he was the only one left, as everyone had already left to go down for breakfast. He shifted around in bed, instantly noticing a dull ache coming from his crotch. A morning erection was always embarrassing especially when you share a room with four other boys, but this morning Harry’s seemed especially needy. He could make out every detail of his dream vividly, and felt his face flush remembering the details that led to his particular predicament. He briefly considered taking care of the problem, but after checking the time, opted for a quick shower and breakfast instead. While in the shower he found his thoughts increasingly leading back to the dream and Luna. It is not as if he had never dreamed of a girl before or, even, multiple girls at once, he was a teenager after all, but it was the first time he had had a dream about Luna. He figured it was just a by product of the kiss still being on his mind, one of those Freudian things he heard about, like being in love with your own mum or something, so he dressed quickly and made his way down to breakfast.
