Hey guys! Had this idea and wasn't sure about it. After a bit of prodding I got the first chapter written and figured I would see what others think. Reviews are greatly appreciated. More tags will come as needed. Anyways, here is the first bit, enjoy! Luminari
Prologue
Leaves rustled softly as a gentle summer breeze made its way through the branches of a large oak tree, giving relief to the warm summer air. The surrounding area was otherwise still save for the soft sounds of birds and the occasional creek of the rope swing that hung from the branches that held a single occupant. The young girl rocked back and forth slowly, her red eyes trained on the grounds below, delicate hands holding onto the rope beside her head. From her place atop the hill, she could see everything, the surrounding country side and its vast fields, her father's manor and the lush gardens behind it, even the people as they milled about, tending to daily chores.
Her pupils dilated as she took a slow, deep breath before returning to their usual slits. Despite the forest that stood between her and the house, she could see everything clearly, could hear the babbling of the small creek hidden amongst the trees. Her father was in a meeting right now, as he often was these days. But that was all right. She didn't mind. She was content to spend most her days entertaining herself. She preferred it this way, not liking the attentions of others or large crowds, and he still made sure to have time for her. Her father had big plans, and although she did not agree with them, she could neither stop him nor raise any objections.
The sound of approaching wings caused her to pause in her rocking and tilt her head back, allowing the wind to push the dark locks from her eyes as they locked onto a large brown owl heading towards the tree she was under. A soft hiss caused her to smile faintly as one hand let go of the swing to gently stroke the small snake at her neck. An answering and his head lay down once more, content that his little mistress was safe.
As the owl came closer, it dropped from the sky, coming to rest on a low branch. Looking it over, the curious eye's settled on the envelope attached to its leg. As a small arm was offered, the owl swooped down to land gracefully, mindful of its talons and the delicate skin beneath, before offering the leg. After relieving the great bird of its small burden, the girl summoned a piece of granola from her back with a flick of her wrist and offered it.
With a grateful hoot, the owl delicately accepted the treat before taking off again in a whoosh of air and feathers, leaving the child to watch after it before looking down at the letter in her hands, her name clearly printed on the front. Turning it over revealed an elaborate wax seal. Calm fingers carefully peeled the flap open and removed the letter within, the only sign of her rising nervousness the increase in her heart beat. That nervousness soon turned into excitement as those crimson orbs rapidly took in the words inside, a wide smile forming.
Taking off suddenly, the child ran down the large hill and through the woods, the smile never leaving her face as she splashed through the shallow waters of the creek. Coming out on the other side and into the back gardens, her pace never slowed as her dress whipped around her legs, the red streaks in her waist length hair flying behind her like ribbons amongst the black that went with it.
Ignoring the many people and house elves she passed, she ran straight for the inner rooms, knowing that is where the man she sought resided, no longer caring if she interrupted as she threw the great double doors open, the strong wards letting her pass easily. Paying no mind to the reproachful looks she got from others, she made her way through the sea of black which parted quickly in front of her. As the last people moved from her path, she saw the man she was searching for.
“Papa!” she called excitedly, as he stood to great her. “Papa, it came! My letter!” She cried excitedly, squealing as strong arms swopped her up.
The man she called “Papa” smiled, as small arms wrapped around his neck, his irritation at the interruption quickly fading in the face of his daughters excitement and this proud moment. “Let me see, child,” he said softly.
Releasing her grip, the little girl leaned back in her fathers grip to look at him, holding up her letter proudly. “See Papa? I got my letter. I get to go to Hogwarts just like you!” she said, looking into the pale face and red eyes that mirrored her own, the only difference between them being that his own dark hair did not sport the red streaks like hers did.
Looking the letter over, he nodded and set her down, though kept a hand on her shoulder as he turned to address the others. “My friends,” he said, voice still soft, “today there is cause for celebration! This fall, my child will join the ranks of wizarding society. Taking her first steps towards truly becoming part of our world!”
This declaration was met with cheers and applause from those gathered. But while they cheered for this latest bit of news, the man inwardly seethed. His daughter's letter was late. It should have come much earlier in the summer as the other childrens' had. He knew this for what it was, a slight against him and his. She may have gotten an acceptance letter, but she was not all together welcome.
The child shifted faintly, her smile faltering as she moved closer to her father. She did not like all this attention on her and these men made her wary. As if sensing his daughters discomfort, her father looked at her once more and smiled.
“Rae,” he said, waiting for her to look at him. When she finally did, he gave her a reassuring smile. “Why don't you go wash up for dinner. We will be done here soon and then I will join you. Where is your bag?” He inquired, noting that her almost ever-present backpack was missing.
“I left it by the tree,” she said quietly.
Nodding, he nudged her towards the door gently. “Ask for someone to go fetch it then and run along. I will see you shortly.”
“Yes, Papa.” she replied, quickly making her way out of the room, letter clutched in her hands. As the doors closed behind her, Rae looked around before calling out. “Turnip?”
With a soft 'pop,' a house elf, in a blue towel appeared beside her, bowing low. “What can I do's for you, little miss?” Turnip asked, looking up at her lady.
“Could you please take me to my room and then go and get my bag? I left it under the big tree.” Rae asked quietly. Normally she would not ask others to take her too her room or fetch her things, but the manor was large and her rooms located on the other side. She wanted to get ready fast so as not to keep her father waiting.
“Of course, little miss! I's be more then happy to help.” The little elf bowed again before reaching out and taking her mistress' hand. With yet another soft 'pop,' they disappeared before re-appearing moments later in another room. Letting go, Turnip vanished once more to do the girl's bidding.
Looking around the room slowly, Rae nodded, seeing everything in its place. A large four post bed sat against one wall covered in lighter blue fabrics that complimented a cream carpet. The walls were painted in a dark shade of green, one of which had been dedicated to shelves that were covered in books. A small desk was squirreled away in a corner and held drawings and schoolwork. Two large french doors opened up onto a small balcony overlooking part of the back gardens and woods.
It was a lovely room but looked more like it belonged to an older teen then a young child. The only hint otherwise was a few toys placed on the bed.
After washing up in the attached bathroom, which was done in similar colors as her room, Rae quickly made her way downstairs to the informal dinning room. Sitting at the table, she was soon joined by her father. Dinner was a quiet affair and once done, he announced that tomorrow they would be going to Diagon Alley to retrieve her school things, new robes and, most importantly, her wand.
The thought of going to school where her father went made Rae very happy. But what excited her the most was the thought of getting a wand of her very own. Over the years, she had watched her father perform magic both with and without a wand. At times, he had let her use his, instructing her on the proper way to hold it and how to cast.
Rae was strong for her age, and very smart, but the spells never worked quite right. The result of using a wand not her own her father once explained to her. Accidental bursts of magic were not uncommon around the house. Especially when she was sick or upset. Fortunately, she had learned ways to control this, including meditation.
That evening was spent in her father's study, with Rae curled in his lap while he read to her. Feeling safe and happy, Rae smiled faintly, resting her head against his shoulder as she slowly drifted off to sleep, her breathing becoming slow and even.
Chuckling softly, her father set the book aside and gently lifted her, carrying her to her room. The elves had already turned the bed down, so he set her in it gently and with a flick of his wrist, changed her day clothes for night before tucking her in. He smiled down at the girl who he fondly called his own. She was growing up and would soon be in school.
Slowly, his smile turned into a scowl as he remembered the slight against him and his child. Someone would pay for that. He had no doubt that she had great things ahead of her. It was why he took her in the first place. Leaving the room, he returned to his study and began to plan for future ahead.
