Where for art thou, Draco?
Full Summary:
The new muggle studies professor decides to teach her seventh year students about Shakespeare by putting on a show. What better play to perform than Romeo and Juliet? What could possibly happen when the Gryffindor golden girl is cast as Juliet or better still when the Slytherin sex god is cast as Romeo? With a bit of Shakespeare magic, could it be that the tragic ending is resolved, when it takes place with a different set of star crossed lovers?

Prologue
“This is stupid!” Hermione whined looking at the sheet of paper they lay lifelessly on the Gryffindor table.
Hermione looked up sharply when she heard Harry laughing, closely followed by Ron, Seamus and Neville.
“What’s so funny guys?” she asked, her brows furrowed at the boys.
Seamus shook his head “Mione, we all have to take muggle studies, its compulsory. You know that.” He said, smiling kindly.
Hermione rolled her eyes, she knew that muggle studies was compulsory, but frankly she couldn’t understand why she had to take it, or Harry for that matter. She was after all a Muggleborn witch. She had spent the best part of her life as a muggle, not knowing that magic existed. It seemed pointless to attend a class that she knew everything about, they were teaching her things she had already lived with, it seemed ridiculous. As far as she was aware the three hours of teaching time a week was wasted, she would rather be doing something more important, like studying in the library for her N.E.W.T.S exams.
The boys laughed again, this time Hermione knew they were laughing because she was pouting; they always did, when she sulked. Suddenly Ron spoke; he’d been too preoccupied shuffling food into his mouth.
"Geez Hermione, you should be pleased its just another thing that you can beat us all at, you'll pass the class with flying colours and you won't even have to try. You should be happy, not moaning and pouting." he said spooning another mouthful of cereal into his mouth.
Hermione looked up from the sheet of paper, her amber eyes wide in surprise, when had Ron started to make sense, because for some reason, his statement caused her to realise that it was just another thing that she could exceed in. maybe she might learn something, well she hoped she would.
“You’re right Ron.” She said finally.
The Gryffindor table went quiet, as each of the occupants stopped what they were doing at the unusual comment, Hermione glanced at Ron quickly to see that his face was flushed as red as his hair. Ginny who had been talking to Lavender Brown suddenly broke the silence that graced the table.
“Mione, did you actually just say that Ron was… right?” she asked dumbfounded. Hermione laughed to herself, she couldn’t understand why people were so shocked by her statement. She turned to face the pretty red head.
“Yes Gin, I did say that Ron was right, don’t look so shocked, Ron is quite wise when he wants to be.” She said honestly.
Ginny nodded her head, “You’re right he is, but you’ve got to admit, it’s something when Hermione Granger admits that someone else is right.” She teased. Hermione laughed, which in turn caused the rest of the table to giggle.

Fifth period found Hermione, Harry and Ron making their way to their muggle studies class, after her earlier outburst Hermione was actually looking forward to the class. She wasn’t sure if it was the fact that it was something else she could succeed in, or whether it was the opportunity to meet the newest Hogwarts professor.
As they made their way to the room, they encountered many of their friends and fellow housemates, Hermione found it interesting that this class was made up entirely of Gryffindor and Slytherin seventh years, which was unusual. Usually the classes were mixed ability and house. This information didn’t please her as Gryffindor and Slytherin had never seen eye to eye, even though the war had ended there was still no love lost even if there was a little less hostility.
The large oak door came into view as they rounded the corner on the second floor, just as the trio approached the door, another group of students pushed passed them, knocking Hermione into the wall. Hermione didn’t even need to see who pushed her to know that it was the self-proclaimed Prince of Slytherin, Draco Malfoy. She could hear Harry and Ron Growl as they crowd laughed.
“Geez Granger, you have serious balance issues falling into walls, or is that how you like it, against walls?” came the silky smooth voice that belonged to Draco.
Hermione didn’t have chance to respond, as she steadied herself, before she had chance to turn she could hear Ron’s angry protective voice. Even now he tried to fight her battles, did he really think her that defenceless?
“Don’t you dare talk to her like that Malfoy, how she likes it has nothing to do with your smug ass!” he cried, his wand pointing at Draco’s chest.
Draco laughed darkly “Whatever Weasel, it was merely an observation, if that’s what she’d into then I hardly think you’re the kind of guy to give her it, you’re too…soft.” He said with a smirk. Draco’s band of followers laughed along as well, though Hermione would have laughed at Crabbe and Goyle’s obvious confusion if it weren’t for the discussion surround how she liked ‘it’.
“Shove off Malfoy.” She said finally to the tall blonde boy, she rolled her eyes at the air of arrogance he emitted; she quickly pulled at Ron’s arm, pulling him away from the group of rival students. When Ron finally began to move willingly, she watched as he and Harry made their way into the class room, Harry looked back noticing that Hermione wasn’t following. Hermione held up two fingers indicating that she would be two minutes before she turned around to face Malfoy again.
“Seriously Malfoy, I don’t think you have any right to 1) assume what I like/ want and 2) who can give me it. So keep your filthy mind out of my personal business.” She said in a confidence voice, she was about to turn and leave when the Slytherin spoke again.
“Dear little Granger, you wouldn’t even know what you would like, you’re still the ever precious Virgin Gryffindor. I’ll be damned if you ever get laid.” He said laughing darkly.
Hermione had had enough.
“Dear slutty Malfoy, just because you hump everything that breathes doesn’t mean that everyone does. Some of us have standards…” she said looking over at Pansy Parkinson a dark haired girl who was draped over Draco’s arm. “Some of us aren’t looking for a quick fuck, and as I stated earlier my personal life has fuck all to do with you.”
Draco smirked again, “My, My Granger, what a filthy mouth you have, matches you’re blood. Such a shame you’re such a frigid bitch, I bet you’d be an amazing fuck.” Hermione felt her lunch rising from her stomach; his comment was so derogatory and disgusting.
“But Drakie poo, you wouldn’t would you?” Parkinson whined in her sickly sweet voice, Draco looked down at the girl, disgust obvious on his face, though Hermione didn’t know if it was aimed at her, or Parkinson who insisted on inching closer to him.
Before he had chance to answer, Hermione answered for him. “Don’t worry Parkinson I’d rather die than let you’re precious Drakie poo, touch me.” She said bitchily, she donned her own smirk, when she saw Malfoy recoil at the use of his nickname. Not giving him a chance to open his mouth with a retort Hermione left to follow her classmates into the room.

Professor Helen Monroe stood elegantly at the front of the large classroom, her large blue eye peered down as she watched her students file in and take seats. She smiled to herself watching as they sat themselves in their friendship groups. She may have been a new teacher, but she knew all her students as soon as she looked at them, she knew their names, their histories and their friends.
Whilst she had been doing her background research two students in particular had caught her eye, two people who on paper were so very similar and yet were completely worlds apart. She had spoken with the Headmistress about both of the students learning of the continuous feud between their houses and thus each other. It was there that she and Minerva McGonagall hatched a plan, a plan that could unite the two houses and teach the students all at the same time.
When the final student took their place Helen looked down at her students, with a flick of her wand the piece of chalk began to write.
“Good Afternoon students I am you’re new muggle studies professor, my name is Professor Monroe.” She waited as the students recited back a dreary good afternoon before she proceeded.
“I am more than aware that many of you are of a muggle background and therefore are already privy to most of the information that will be presented to you; however I aim to make these classes as exciting as possible, starting now.”
She looked down at the students whose faces were clouded with confusion.
“Our topic for this module is the muggle playwright Shakespeare…” several gasps could be heard from the room; whether it was excitement or moans she couldn’t tell.
“This module will be different; I have arranged with Headmistress McGonagall that your end of module assessment will not be an assigned piece of writing… but a play.”
Seamus raised his hand as the class murmured amongst themselves.
“Mr Finnegan, what is your question?” she asked looking at the brown haired Gryffindor boy.
Seamus looked instantly shock that she had addressed him by name, the shock subsided but he was hesitant in asking his question.
“P-professor Monroe, What do you mean by play?” he asked looking around at his classmates for reassurance. He was rewarded when other students also voiced their concern and questions as to what she meant by play. Helen smiled at Seamus; she raised her hands and waited as the noise began to subside.
“Very good question Mr Finnegan, 5 points to Gryffindor for asking a valid question.” Seamus beamed back up at the new professor.
“A play is when people portray characters in a theatrical production, for instance, a story. People act out the story to an audience on a stage. This is what you will be doing. For the next term you will learn about one of Shakespeare’s most famous pieces of work, before we depart for the Christmas holidays, you will act out the play to the rest of Hogwarts students and Faculty members.”
The murmurs began once again, as friends spoke amongst themselves, Harry and Ron instantly turned to Hermione whose face was wide with wonder, and fear all at the same time.
“What do you think Mione?” Harry said looking at the reasonably shell shocked girl.
“I don’t know Harry, something seems a bit off, I mean I’m excited I absolutely love Shakespeare, you both know I do, but I don’t like the idea of performing, being on a stage for everyone to see, you know what I mean?” she said glancing at them sideways.
Harry nodded. “Somehow it doesn’t feel right going back into the spotlight after spending so much time trying to get out of it.” He said quietly, Hermione and Ron nodded in unison. They knew what they meant, as the infamous golden trio they had spent most of their childhood in the spotlight, with the fall of Voldemort they were finally given the chance to reclaim their lives and start afresh and yet this project sounded like they would be pushed back into it again. Hermione squeezed Harry’s hand again.
“I’ve got to say, I’m interested to know what play she had chosen to re-enact, I mean Shakespeare wrote some fantastic pieces, of course I have my favourites.” She said with a wistful smile. Harry and Ron laughed gently, “You’re such a hopeless romantic, Mione.” Harry said with a playful nudge. They looked back to the front of the classroom as the noise faded once again.
“I realise that for those of you who know of Shakespeare, you will be wondering which of the plays I have chosen well, the play is…” she paused for effect looking at the hopeful faces of the students who had even a basic understanding of the project.
“…Romeo and Juliet.” She said with a final smile.
The room was suddenly overcome with girlish screams; even Hermione was guilty of a squeal of delight. Romeo and Juliet was by far her favourite play, she could hear girls around the room wishing out loud that she would be the one chosen to play Juliet. Hermione never had such a wish, she didn’t want to play the lead, she didn’t think she was nearly the type to play the heroine. She could hear Harry and Ron talking amongst themselves but she tuned them out to listen to other conversations. Over in the far corner Pansy Parkinson was making it known that she should be the one to play Juliet, Hermione snorted at that, she definitely wasn’t the type to play Juliet.
Juliet was an innocent girl, who fell in love with the wrong person, her naivety and love shone at times but they ultimately led to her tragic end. Pansy Parkinson was by no means innocent, she was the most corrupt young girl Hermione has ever had the displeasure of meeting.
Hermione was brought from her thoughts by Professor Monroe’s voice “As most of you are aware Romeo and Juliet is about an ancient grudge between two house, can anyone tell me those houses?” she said looking down at the students. Several hands shot up into the air.
“Mister Goyle, would you be so kind as to answer the question?” she said looking at the small dim-witted Slytherin, Goyle’s head shot up of the desk as he looked around wide eyed, not even registering the topic of the class let alone the question he had been asked. When it didn’t look like Goyle was going to answer the question, or pass out from trying to figure it out, Professor Monroe appointed another student to answer.
“Mister Malfoy, please could you tell me the two houses in Romeo and Juliet and which of the two do our leads belong to?” she said.
Hermione watched as Draco’s eye line lifted from inspecting his perfectly manicured nails to meet the professors, without so much as a blink he answered.
“The two houses are the Montague and the Capulet’s. Romeo, the male lead comes from the Montague household, Juliet the female lead is from the Capulet household.” He answered smoothly.
“Very good, Mister Malfoy, Five points to Slytherin. Right you are, the Montague’s and the Capulet’s were two very noble families in fair Verona, the place in which the play was set. Juliet is the daughter to Lord and Lady Capulet, Romeo is the son of Lord and Lady Montague. Both families are involved in a feud that has gone back through most of their generations which ultimately has claimed many lives. It is sad that the play never actually states the reason for their feud. But it is apparent that their rivalry is so many years old that they have lost insight as to why they are rivals. It is just a rivalry that has continued because it was easier. Who knows: it could have just been started over a drunk man calling the other man's wife a name and from there things escalated.” She said laughing briefly, the class laughed along too.
“As I see it the house rivalry in Romeo and Juliet is very similar to the rivalry between your own two houses. It is in this thought that I have based the roles. As it stands, Gryffindor you are to be the Capulet family and Slytherin are to be the Montague family. In a moment I will assign you the characters you are to play, we will then begin to read through the play.”
Professor Monroe walked behind her desk, he robes flowing behind her as the motion created a soft wind. She leaned over the desk to pick up a piece of parchment that contained the list of names.
“Right I want you to listen carefully as I reel of your name and character, I want you to make a mental note of it, okay, I shall begin with Slytherin, Zabini you are Mercutio, Crabbe you are Benvolio, Goyle – Sampson.” The list continued as Hermione listened intently to the casting, she knew who Romeo was to be, but she hoped that it wasn’t true, until Professor Monroe said his name.
“Malfoy you are to be Romeo.” Helen said with a smile, she watched as many of the girls swooned at the though, Draco for his part was more than happy to be given the lead.
“And finally Miss Parkinson, you are to be Rosaline, Romeo’s love interest for the first part of the play.” Pansy openly smiled at this; though her disappointment was made known that she coveted the part of Juliet. Her smile suddenly disappeared when she realised that her character was never actually seen in the play. “Professor, My character is never on stage, how can you assign a character to me, if they are never seen? It defeats the object!!” she screeched, Helen on her part nodded, before she answered coolly. “Indeed Miss Parkinson, I believe we can come to some arrangement.” The stern look instantly placated the girl. Once all the roles were assigned within Slytherin Professor Monroe moved onto the Gryffindor roles.
“Weasley you are Tybalt, Longbottom you are Friar Lawrence, Finnegan – Paris, Potter - Lord Capulet.” Hermione began to feel sick, as the list dwindled she knew it was coming, as the list got closer to the end the worse she felt, her stomach began to knot, her palms were sweating and she knew if she looked into the mirror all the colour in her face would have drained away. She didn’t want this, this had to be some dream, no, this definitely was a nightmare. But it wasn’t…
“Hermione Granger you are Juliet.” Helen said smiling fondly at the bright eyed witch.
The murmurs instantly engulfed the room, as the news sunk of the assigned characters; many looked over to Hermione or Malfoy whispering to their friends. Suddenly a loud crash rang though the room, the sound of metal scraping across concrete followed by a thud.
The students turned harshly to look in the direction of the noise, only to find a very unconscious Hermione Granger laid not so ceremoniously on the cold ground.
