Chapter 1. Dogweed and Deathcap
Celes shivered violently as a fiercely cold wind blew past her, for what seemed like the millionth time since pulling on her thick winter coat she regretted her decision to walk to Hogsmeade.
She had made the decision early that Saturday morning that something had to be done about the intense pains she was feeling in her lower abdomen. She usually got her monthly potions from Poppy, however it being the holiday season the nurse as well as most of the student body was away spending time with family.
She considered pleading with Professor Snape for the ingredients, but the thought of not only having to speak with the man but also ask for ingredients for such an embarrassing reason caused her to decide that Hogsmeade was her best choice.
After what seemed like ages she finally trudged her way to the door of Dogweed and Deathcap, the best place to find any and all herbs and ingredients one could ever need for a potion. A little bell rang out in the empty store as she gratefully entered into the warmth, happy to have finally arrived and be out of the blizzard like winds.
After taking a moment to rub her icy cold hands together to generate some much needed circulation and warmth, she entered further into the store and scanned the shelves for the ingredients she would need.
The little shop’s walls were filled to the ceiling with glass jars full of odd herbs and plants, the strong aroma of them all (both alive and dried) made her feel a little light headed and as though she were going to violently sneeze at any moment.
“Let’s see…..Chinese motherwort….Szechuan lovage root….Lavender…” she muttered softly to herself as she walked from aisle to aisle picking up each individual ingredient and stowing them in the crook of her right arm.
Once she had finished getting each thing on her list she walked up to the counter and rung the bell to alert the shopkeeper that she was ready to purchase, after a long pause to wait she rung the bell again, this time a little harder.
Another long wait, was there even anyone manning the counter? She bent over the countertop to try and see into the back of the store, but could see nothing but boxes stacked up on top of one another haphazardly.
“I believe the shopkeeper is out back tending his greenhouse Ms. Warren…”
Celes jumped and let out a gasp at the sudden sound behind her, dropping her ingredients to the floor in the process. She knew at once who the voice belonged to and could already see his sneering face in the back of her mind, but she was still surprised that he was able to sneak up on her without making so much as a sound.
She turned around slowly to see the potions master looking down at her with his usual blank stare, she wondered if the man ever showed emotion, or even felt any for that matter. Celes was well aware that Snape didn’t hold a lot of respect for her as a teacher, he thought that Practical Magic was a useless class best left for future housewives and maids. In his mind Celes Warren was still that daft little blonde who turned her potions partner blue for a week during her fifth year.
He looked at her for a moment, smirking when her grey-blue eyes darted away from his and blinked furiously with nervous tension. The girl was eternally nervous and fearful when having to directly speak with him, and her eyes would always stray to anything else in the room to keep from having to make direct eye contact.
He glanced down at all the spilled herbs, noting the names of each one and going through the long lists of potions in his head to try and identify exactly what she was trying to make, no doubt it would either explode or turn into a goopy mess in her cauldron.
He cocked his eyebrow curiously as one potion came to mind, but surely she wasn’t planning on adding Lavender…
“Lavender, Mrs. Warren, will cause the effects of this particular potion to be severely diminished….I assume you’re buying it for something else?”, he asked her in a somewhat mocking tone, clearly seeking to make her feel both foolish and embarrassed.
“Oh!”, She exclaimed, bending down to gather the ingredients up into her arms again as though she had forgotten they dropped off the counter when Snape surprised her.
She glanced back up to the potions master, her cheeks flushing as it dawned on her that he knew her reasons for buying these particular ingredients. ‘How embarrassing!’ she thought to herself.
He at once noticed her embarrassed blush, sneering with impatience as she took her time to stand up and face him once again.
“I’m surprised you didn’t think to come to me with your……problem”, He punctuated the last part with a tone of distaste. “I know you’re well aware that not only can I make this potion, but I have all the correct ingredients in my supply closet…”
She wasn’t sure if it was from the embarrassment, the built up frustration with Professor Snape, or all the memories of his treatment of her when she was his student but something in her cracked. She lifted her face to his defiantly, her eyes narrowing angrily, her mouth twisting into a shape few had ever seen it in. She was enraged with this man standing before her, how dare he attempt to make her feel foolish, he knew nothing of the pains of being a woman and never would!
She considered punching him in the nose right there in the store, but settled instead for a low growl of frustration and stomping out of the store after tossing her unpaid for ingredients back on the counter.
He stood there for a long moment, feeling something Severus Snape never felt for his actions, a little guilty.
