Chapter One: Harry and Bill break a Curse
Africa was a heated land in the summer and Harry tried to cool himself with a charm that only seemed to stir the air around him. Finally, he pulled the scarf from his neck and dipped it into the little rivulet that the locals called the Niger stream. When it was saturated, he wrapped it back in place and sighed at the relief it brought.
Bill came up behind him and patted his back, indicating the mountain in front of them. It was their destination and the trek that had already taken two weeks would not be over until they reached it. They had four more days of travel, then they had two to break the curse before the Portkey in Bill's pack was activated and they would be yanked back home. Bill was missing his wife and their three children and Harry missed Ginny and the baby she had born for him, as well.
On this job, unlike his work with the Aurors, he spent a lot of time away, but it was not as dangerous, and the multitude of ex-death eaters had been captured and sentenced by now. So, he and Bill had taken the jobs that were paid for by the Goblins of Gringotts, or their patrons, to hunt down curses on ancient treasures and bring them back to the bank for those who laid claim to them.
They were very good at their jobs.
Thus far, in the two years that Harry had worked with Bill, they had recovered millions of galleons worth of stolen, lost or just plain recovered valuables, some with dark histories, others not so much, but many items of great power.
Two times they had returned with extras, a vase that was not among the items listed, that was awarded to Bill, and a clock that was from ancient Swartzwald manufacture and Harry now had hanging in his den. The vase had power that was undetermined, so Bill kept it in his personal vault, but the clock was able to determine when Harry was due to be sent on another case, and when he'd return, and it was a relief to Ginny as she waited for him.
This time, the item they searched was from a familiar family, and Harry was less enthusiastic about its recovery. It was a long missing piece of the Malfoy family treasure that had been stolen two centuries before, and had only recently been located in this remote area. It was to be returned to Lucius, as soon as the curse upon it had been lifted and it was safe once more. The job paid 300,000 galleons, and with that kind of payoff, both men could afford to spend the next year on holiday, and that was their plan.
The mountain drew closer over the next few days, and then the climb to its western plateau was their task. Half-way up, they had to rest, as the weight of their gear strained them. It was one of the hardships of the job, travel by non-magic means, but Bill had explained that the curses they sought to break, had special wards that were tuned to the use of magic, especially anything as strong as apparation or broom flight.
The trek was hard, but when they reached the foothills, they could see what they had searched for. Halfway to the cliffs, an archway opened up and its hazy look told them of its magic origins. Bill pointed at it, but Harry only followed, climbing carefully up the low slope until the going gets rougher. The crags and rocks become harder and he wished he had done more practice climbing before they left England. The archway was closing in on them and the edges blurred to the eye. Bill was ahead of him, his back to Harry as they made their way over stony outcroppings and crumbling rises.
When they should have been within sight of the door, it had all but vanished, whisping in and out of sight like a wil-o-wisp. Harry watched as Bill took out a bag and reached inside, drawing out a powder that he threw at the arch, solidifying everything it touched. The archway is soon very aparent, solid and smooth like no muggle-made item could every be.
Harry followed Bill through it, checking along with his brother-in-law for hexes, curses and lingering traps, as were often found in their work. It took four hours to reach the main chamber of the site, twenty small curses later.
Bill stared at the vase, settled on a podium in the middle of the vault, its past unclear other than its designs and makemanship. "Ming dinasty, porcelain with some eastern influence. This is a priceless piece, Harry." the eldest Weasley said.
"I'll say. It's gonna mean time off to spend on my family. That's all the priceless I need, right now." Harry answered him, indicating his partner should get started.
"Why would someone steal a priceless vase and hide it here? That's all I'm wondering. Why not keep it somewhere where you can enjoy it at least?" Bill had begun circling outside of the perimeter of the wards that surrounded the podium. "It doesn't make sense."
Harry tilted his head and stared at the vase, wondering now about these things. He had no answer, so just suggested. "Someone must have hated the Malfoys, alot."
Before they could begin, a voice called out from the ceiling, and the two cursebreakers stopped, looking around for anyone. "You must not interfere." the voice said and Harry stepped back. He was near the door, so he could move farther away. "Stay out." the voice continued and Bill motioned to him to come back. When he crossed the doorway again, the voice returned. "Do not interfere with this spell. It will affect all wizard kind." Once again, Harry stepped back and the voice bid him go. "Leave now, and do not return."
"It seems to notice you, but not me." Bill said from his side of the chamber. "I'll work on the wards, while you figure out the curse on the item. Timing is essential. When I get the wards down, you've got to break the curse. Are you ready?" Harry nodded and they began.
It had not been necessary for Bill to make his speech, for after all this time, they had begun to work well together, anticipating each other's needs and moves, like two parts of a machine. Bill was nearly finished breaking the wards when Harry found the key to the curse. Just as they both poised to strike the killing blow, the voice returned, but this time there was a face to go along with it. It was a familiar looking face, framed with familiar red hair. "How could you ruin the work of your family, young Weasley/Prewett?"
"Who are you?" Bill asked, stillholding his wand to speak the ward rending incantation.
"I am Castor Merlin Prewett, son of Margaret and William Prewett and father to Lionel and David. You are son of my son's son's son's daughter. I am you great-grandfather. I placed this spell, and those that protect it, to give my decendents a chance and to thwart the goals of my rival."
"You put the spell on the Malfoys?" Bill asked and the apparition nodded. "What does it do?" he asked.
"I can never speak of it again. Leave it be, or face the consequences." and Castor disappeared from view. "Do not break the spell. Do not interfere." the voice continued.
"Bill?" Harry said but his brother-in-law shook his head. He waved his wand, spoke the incantation and broke the wards. Harry quickly sent in the curse-breaking spell and the room lit up with sparks and smoke, fire burning the sparks away and leaving the air full of its incense like scent. Harry had dropped to the ground, avoiding the fires, but Bill stood his ground, watching the curse of his ancestors' burn out and fizzle to the ground. The vase sat pleasantly on its base, waiting patiently to be removed by its rescuers.
Bill stepped up, lifted it off the pedestal and wrapping it in a thick bag for transport home. Before he moved farther away, he noticed a sheet of parchment where the vase had been, he picked it up and began to read, as he walked back to the entrance. Harry followed, listening to the story that was recounted on the page.
So, how does it sound so far? Is it worth continuing?
