The Deal
James Potter was an arrogant berk. He knew it and everyone who knew him knew it. But James couldn’t help it if his good looks, his athletic prowess, his brilliant prankster mind, and his family’s wealth made him one of the most popular blokes at Hogwarts. His ability to sweet talk nearly every adult in his life gave James much freedom to do as he pleased with little negative consequence. The only thing out of James’ reach was the one thing he coveted the most—the affection of one Lily Evans.
James had been pursuing Lily’s attention since the day he set eyes on the stunning redhead that first ride on the Hogwarts Express. Unfortunately, he was there too and had a big chunk of Lily’s attention. What Lily saw in that ugly, hooked nosed, greasy excuse for a human being, James could not suss out. But in retrospect, it wasn’t such a bright idea to pick on the git from the get-go.
Despite Snivellus’ unpleasant demeanor, Lily was loyal to the prat so attacking her ‘friend’ didn’t win James any points. Lily just didn’t understand that James and Sirius were trying to show her how unworthy of her time the bastard truly was. The bullying couldn’t be helped really. That was how males showed their superiority over pitiful blokes like Snape. James never liked the looks of Snape with his sallow skin and odd clothing. Any bloke who wanted to be sorted Slytherin was bad news in James’ eye.
But now they were sixteen and Lily still wouldn’t give James the time of day. She listed his pomposity and narcissism as leading factors even after she dropped her friendship with the Slytherin bat subsequent to Snape calling her a ‘Mudblood’ at the end of fifth year. James thought for sure with Snape out of the picture that Lily would cave, but she continued to rebuff every effort with which James tried to woo her. Sure, it was James tormenting the git that day after O.W.L.s for Sirius’ amusement, but James wasn’t the one to call Lily such a shameful name.
James smiled to himself as he straightened out his robes for the fifth time on his way to the North Tower battlement to meet with Lily Evans. He wasn’t sure what she wanted, only that she’d slipped him a note requesting his presence. Usually ‘private meetings’ between a bloke and his bird happened in the Astronomy Tower so James tried not to get his hopes up. Of course it could be an ambush too, but Lily didn’t seem the sort to set James up for such treatment. After all, it was the first day of the new term.
Running his hand through his hair to make sure it had the ‘fresh off the broom’ look the ladies so loved; James smiled to himself as he ascended the stairs leading to Lily Potter. Whatever she wanted, James was going to take advantage that he was alone with the girl of his dreams. She wouldn’t get away so easily this time. Not that James would force himself on her, no. But he deserved at least a little kiss for traipsing so far from Gryffindor Tower when they could have met in the common room. James’ smile turned into a smirk.
Lily was waiting for him when he got there so he quickly turned his smirk into his brightest smile upon seeing her.
“Evans” James nodded in greeting. “I was wondering when you’d come to your senses and try to get me alone.”
“You are so full of yourself Potter, it’s a miracle you don’t smell” came Lily’s cutting reply.
James’ smile faded a bit, but he worked at trying not to lose it completely. He’d been hoping for a little more light hearted reply. Something that told him Lily changed her mind about him, but obviously it wasn’t the case. She sounded more angry than annoyed.
“So,” James tried again, “why the clandestine meeting Lils, afraid to be seen alone with such a handsome bloke like me?”
James saw Lily sigh then roll her eyes before answering.
“You know Potter, you become a bigger prat every year and don’t call me ‘Lils’,” she huffed. “It’s a wonder anyone can stand to be around you for long. Black is just as bad if not worse, but I have no idea why Lupin even associates with you two. Pettigrew is just sad and I think you lot are just cruel enough to keep him around for your amusement and so you don’t have to go down to the kitchens yourselves!” Lily accused.
The smile completely faded from James’ face at Lily’s words. They were too close to the truth. No one could stand to be around James and Sirius for long. It wasn’t easy being good looking, clever and gifted in magic like he and Sirius were. Without much effort they outclassed their schoolmates, and they made enemies of them with the cruel but ingenious pranks they constantly pulled on everyone, professors included. They tried to say it was all in good fun and those who didn’t laugh at themselves were just too full of it, but it wasn’t an accident that their targets were most often those who James and Sirius didn’t like and who they wanted to show up.
But it was what Lily said about Peter that hit closest to home. Peter wasn’t a likeable lad. James and Sirius barely tolerated him, but they hid it well. They could spot a weakling from a stone’s throw away so they decided to have a bit of fun with the unsuspecting bloke. They gave Peter all kinds of pointless errands to keep him out of their hair and to see how far they could push him. There wasn’t anything Peter wouldn’t do to be accepted, including wanking off in front of them while orally servicing Sirius and James (James just that once) in the dorm room while Remus was in the library revising. To James and Sirius, Peter was just a useful but pathetic sycophant.
“What Potter? No colorful rejoinders or flowery explanations on how I’m wrong about you and Sirius Black?” Lily asked with narrowed eyes.
It was clear Lily had them pegged. There wasn’t anything to be said in response as anything James did say would sound insincere and untrue no matter how charmingly or jovially he said it. Lily seemed resistant to his charisma. James decided to change tack.
“So Evans, why did you call me up here then? I’m sure your lectures and accusations could have been made in the common room. It’s not as if you haven’t gone off on Sirius or me over the years. Why the secrecy then?” James asked with annoyance at being called out for his behavior.
Lily was silent for a moment. She examined James with a calculating eye before speaking.
“I’m surprised you didn’t deny it Potter,” Lily responded less harshly. James shrugged. Lily continued.
“I wanted to speak to you privately because I didn’t want anyone else over hearing our conversation. I have a favor to ask and I don’t want anyone else to know about it,” Lily explained.
“A favor?” James half asked. He hadn’t expected that. “What kind of favor and what do I get out of it?” James asked.
“I want you to stop tormenting Severus Snape for the rest of the year and I want you to get Black to do the same,“ Lily stated as she crossed her arms over her chest in determination as she waited for his response.
“You can’t be serious!” James shouted as he threw his arms up in the arm in disbelief. “The year has just started and you expect me to leave Snivellus alone! Are you daft woman?!” James exclaimed.
James saw Lily’s nostrils flare in temper before she answered. “Don’t you dare call me ‘woman’ you misogynistic blow hard! And quit calling him Snivellus! There are hundreds of other students in this school you and Black can torture, but leave Severus alone. I know you and Black were behind that prank on Severus when we got off the train in Hogsmeade! I don’t know why you pick on him so and have done so since day one. And you wonder why I can’t stand a prick like you!” Lily concluded her face red from anger and effort. Her fists were balled as if she was ready to strike.
“Now wait just a moment,” James said in equal anger although he smartly took a step out of the reach of her swing. “I have been nothing but a gentleman to you Evans, (he paid no heed to her snort of disbelief), but you ignore me in favor of that Slytherin git! Sni…Snape has done nothing to help his cause as he hexes us every chance he gets. He’s an unpleasant bloke and I don’t see what you see in him. I’m much better company than he ever could be but you won’t give me a chance. As far as I’m concerned, the bat deserves everything Sirius and I give him,” James finished weakly. He couldn’t believe he’d just admitted he was jealous of Snape even if James didn’t say it in so many words. Maybe Lily wouldn’t pick up on it.
“Ha! You’re jealous,” Lily accused. “This is about you being jealous?” Lily asked incredulously. “I don’t believe it, and for your information, Severus would leave you alone if you weren’t such an arrogant toerag that just has to bully him. He prefers to keep to himself James. He knows better than look for trouble. He promised me he wouldn’t start anything with you.”
“Promised you? You’ve got to be having me on. He’s a Slytherin for Merlin’s sake, Lily. He’d say anything to get what he wants….”
“Like you?” Lily interrupted. James ignored her.
“How can you trust him after he called you a …” James couldn’t say it so he gestured with his hands as both knew what he meant.
“He apologized, James. Severus was very sorry for what he said,” Lily explained with a touch of sadness.
“Again, how can you trust him? Maybe he apologized because he thought you wanted to hear it. And if you believed him, why aren’t you still friends with him?” James really wanted to know the answers. He didn’t understand why Lily always took Snape’s side.
“I trust Severus and that’s all I’m going to say on the matter. He and I are headed in different directions as we mature. I don’t like where he’s headed. I still trust him, but I don’t have to like the things he does or with whom he associates. I still care about him, and I want you and Sirius to leave him alone. Please,” Lily pleaded.
James thought about it for a bit. It wouldn’t hurt him to lay off the Slytherin bastard, but it was so entertaining to see Snape suffer. It didn’t slip James’ notice that Lily as much as said she thought James was a prick for picking on Snape and that was one of the reasons she so disliked James. He would agree to Lily’s demands but it would cost her.
“All right Evans,” James began as a plan formulated in his head on how to get what he wanted. “Say I decide to leave Sni…Snape alone, what do I get out of the deal?”
James watched as Lily tried to calculate what James was after.
“What do you want?” Lily asked cautiously.
“I think you know Evans. You aren’t that thick,” James said with his trademark smirk. “I want you to be my girl.”
“That’s an awful lot to ask of me Potter since I can barely stand to be in the same room with you,“ Lily bristled when she responded. “I’m not having sex with you either.”
“Nevertheless Evans, that is my price. In public you act like my loving girlfriend. We hold hands. We kiss. I drag you into a few broom cupboards for show. You ‘help’ me and Sirius with our homework. You let me paw you without objection no matter who’s around. In other words, you play the part of a fawning, pleasing girlfriend and I’ll ignore Snape for the rest of the year. However, if he attacks me in any way, I have the right to defend myself,” James bargained as he raised his brow and crossed his arms to indicate it was now up to Lily to decide.
“Why do you want someone who hates your guts to be your girlfriend Potter?” an exasperated Lily asked.
“That is for me to know Evans. So what will it be? Do you care enough about Snape to take the deal or was that just lip service you spouted?” James asked coolly. He could taste the victory now. Evans was anything but insincere, and her Gryffindor traits of honor and courage wouldn’t let her just leave someone to his fate at James’ hands.
“You swear you’ll leave Severus alone for the rest of the year?” Lily demanded.
“Yes,” James replied.
“And you will make sure Sirius and the rest of your little group leaves Severus alone as well?” Lily asked.
“Now see here, you only included Sirius in this, “James pointed out.
“You don’t think I’m that gullible, do you Potter?” Lily asked accusingly. “You’d just have your little toadies do your dirty work for you. Don’t think I don’t know that you send Pettigrew out to set up many of your pranks so he’ll take the blame if he gets caught. You insist ALL of your mates leave Severus alone or we have no deal, and if I find out that you’re behind some other house going after Snape because you can’t, it’s over. I don’t like you Potter, and I don’t trust you either. But I’ll do it for Severus; he doesn’t deserve the treatment he gets from you and your lot.”
“All right Evans, I’ll do my best. But I don’t control the rest of my mates. I can ask them to lay off, but I don’t see how I can stop them once their minds are made up,” James explained reasonably.
“Blimey Potter, Pettigrew couldn’t think for himself if his life depended on it.” James could see that Lily truly believed that as she continued. “Lupin doesn’t appear to enjoy the bullying like the rest of you so I’m sure he wouldn’t be hard to convince. It’s you and Black who are the worst. I just want to make sure you don’t pressure your followers to act in your stead. This is a good faith deal, but if you won’t put the effort in, then say so now and we can walk away like this never happened.” Lily’s body language brooked no argument.
“No need to get your wand in a knot Evans. Like I said, I’ll do my best. It won’t be easy since we’ve been pranking Sni…Snape since first year. Give me a few days to get things in order before you cancel our accord,” James requested. “In the meanwhile, we’ll act like we just got together, all right? It will look like we came up here to make it official if my mates ask.”
A large smirk flashed across James’ face as he thought of a capital idea.
“Let’s seal it with a kiss, Evans” James suggested. “After all, we have to start somewhere.”
Lily bit her lip nervously like she hadn’t expected it so soon. After a long pause, Lily finally nodded in agreement. It was a kiss James always knew he would win. Now he just had to win her heart.
~*~
The Hogwarts Express left the Hogsmeade Station headed for King’s Cross for the last time that school year. Tucked comfortably in their usual cabin, James was enjoying the motion of the train as Lily Evans sat crossways on his lap, one of the final acts of their agreement. Lily’s firm bottom massaged the painful erection James had as a result of both the train’s motion and Lily’s counter motion. James smiled to himself that Lily showed no sign that anything was amiss in James’ lap.
Sirius was out and about having excused himself to go to the loo. For some reason, Peter got up and followed. James didn’t want to know. Remus was sitting quietly reading a book as usual. Lily, for her part, sat quietly in James’ lap like a dutiful girlfriend. Her head lay on his shoulder as his arms were wrapped snuggly around her waist which helped increase the wonderful friction James was experiencing.
Sixth year was over way too fast for James after he got what he always wanted. Sure Lily was still his girlfriend in name only, but James felt he made much progress in winning Lily’s affections. Well, she didn’t completely hate him anymore. And she no longer fought him when he insisted on Lily not objecting to moments like this. A lad was bound to get a woody every now and then when he was around such beauty. It was the bird’s responsibility to make sure a bloke’s response wasn’t obvious.
It wasn’t easy to convince Sirius to forget about Snape for the year. Baiting and trapping Snape was one of their favorite pastimes. James was reluctant to tell Sirius why James wanted Snape left alone, but after much ‘debate’ James finally confessed. Sirius grudgingly agreed because it was for a bird, and not just any bird as James and Sirius easily had their choice, but a bird James lusted after for years. Sirius knew what Lily meant to James after all.
Lily was correct though, it took no effort to convince Remus, and well, Peter always followed the crowd. With Peter it was always what James and Sirius wanted—especially Sirius. James often found himself leaving the sixth year dorm when Sirius directed Peter to humiliate himself for their enjoyment. James definitely drew the line at watching Peter bugger himself with his own wand. Besides James had more pleasant company to keep in the form of one Lily Evans.
The relationship was stormy at the start. Lily didn’t appreciate James’ aggressive pawing or his blatant attempts to rile Snape with his amorous actions toward Lily while in plain view of the git. James knew he was pushing it, and after Lily nearly separated James from his bits, James learned some discretion. It was slow going, but Lily turned out to be a wonderful actress and soon the whole school, including his mates, was convinced of their love for each other.
An advantageous side effect of his pact with Evans was his grades began to improve. Well, Lily did flat out refuse to do James’ or Sirius’ homework for them. And true, he and Sirius always performed admirably in class and on exams although they rarely lifted a text except to write a required essay. James was good at faking his way through an essay with better than average results. School required little effort from him. Sirius was the same way so they spent class time planning new pranks or checking out the ladies.
But with Lily insisting on spending much of her time in the library, James spent time there by default if he wanted to spend time with Lily at all. Lily didn’t like to be bothered while revising so with little else to do, James read his text books and revised his class materials. Although Lily refused to write his essays for him like a ‘good girlfriend’ would, she did proofread and edit them for him so his marks improved. His in-class behavior also benefited as sitting with Lily cut down on his shenanigans much to Sirius’ chagrin.
Overall, James’ sixth year was by far the best. With Lily sitting in the Quidditch stands, James set the Gryffindor single season record for goals scored. He was a definite shoe-in for Quidditch captain next term. James heard the professors discuss what a good influence Lily was on him as he rarely earned detention, and it was with much pride that James scored grades second only to Lily Evans for the year. It was the best deal James ever made.
Of course it wasn’t always easy, but James and Lily carefully navigated the tricky waters together. James was more convinced than ever that Lily was the girl for him. There wasn’t a mean bone in her body—if you didn’t provoke her, that is. James soon learned not to provoke her. Evans was a fiery one that’s for sure, but it was a beautiful sight to see.--If her anger or irritation was directed at someone else, of course. It seemed Sirius had a very long learning curve, or maybe he just enjoyed goading Lily. It was entertaining to see Sirius run from Lily’s wrath; the whole common room enjoyed the amusing sight of Lily chasing Sirius with her wand drawn.
James smiled at the memory. It wasn’t hard to smile at his memories of Lily. Heck, he was hard smiling at the memories of Lily, and it wasn’t because she was sitting on his lap. The snogging was great after the initial awkwardness and Lily’s reticence in engaging in such activity, but it was part of the deal and James made sure to do it up right…and do that often…with witnesses.
Lily balked at his body’s reaction to such activity at first, but he didn’t let her escape. It was part and parcel of being a ‘couple’, and Lily was expected to honor their agreement. She didn’t like James rutting against her to find some relief, but since it wasn’t intercourse, James convinced her it was an age appropriate activity. James was a healthy seventeen year old man now. He had his needs. He was more than willing to take care of Lily’s needs if she’d only let him. Of course she wouldn’t, but it didn’t stop him from trying much to Lily’s annoyance.
There were more serious events occurring during sixth year. The self proclaimed Lord Voldemort was gaining a foothold in the magical world and several of Hogwarts more questionable students were recruiting on school grounds. James, Sirius, Remus and Lily had become active—though junior—members of Headmaster Dumbledore’s organization to uphold the Light. Peter joined too, but he was much less enthusiastic and James often wondered how Peter got sorted into Gryffindor to begin with. There was a tension and hostility among the student population that simmered below the surface, but with Lily by his side, James was able to put it from his mind as Lily was a brilliant distraction.
And presently it was heaven for James to have Lily in his lap. By the time they got to King’s Cross, James visited heaven several times. Remus politely never looked or mentioned anything about James’ attempts to stifle his moaning. Even Lily said nothing. She was well practiced at discreet wand work as she banished away the evidence of James’ excitement. Upon Sirius’ and Peter’s return Sirius only quirked a knowing eyebrow or two at James while Peter looked on hungrily. James found that disturbing, but not enough to remove Lily from his lap. There was something exciting about getting off in plain sight of his mates. Perhaps next year James could strike a sweeter deal.
Yes, next year he would get a sweeter deal…and he had Snivellus to thank. How ironic, eh?
